Dabka or Dapka is a detailed type of needlework from Rajasthan in India. It is usually done at the final stage of the production process to add finishing touch embellishments.
At least three to four worker workers are required for a detailed and fine work at the same time on the same piece. First a thick cotton cord is stitched on the pattern to be embroidered. Then on this cord prefabricated metal thread is looped on with an ordinary stitching needle. The patterns mostly made are of flowers, leaves, or birds. Skilled embroiders can even do french knots with the smallest size.

It can take a lot of work to combine new and old. Which is exactly what one French-Indian fashion designer has done, blending 17th-century Mughal designs with a modern twist.

Collection: Sunshine by Yard
Handmade block printed table mats with napkins. Set of 6.
On Handblock Print:
Indians possessed unparalleled expertise in the secrets of natural plant dyes, particularly with mordants (metallic salts that both create color and allow it to adhere to fabric). A kind of mud resist-printing, called dabu, which allows areas of a design to be reserved from dye, also flourished here. A series of combinations of mordant and resist stamping and dyeing enabled Indian printers to create uniquely complex designs, coveted from Southeast Asia and palaces of Mughal emperors to the far-flung capitals of Western Europe. Between outside influences and the diversity of the subcontinent’s own indigenous communities and tribes, India has yielded one of the most magnificent pattern vocabularies ever. And yet for the past 200 years the industry has been on the precipice of extinction, doomed in part by the popularity that helped create it. - Excerpt from Deborah Needleman's piece for the New York Times.

Moti bharat is a form of bead embroidery from Jalor district of Rajasthan in India, practiced by the women of certain pastoral tribes. The opaque white beads form the base on which the transparent beads are worked by stringing them together in various shapes and forms of birds, animals, human figures and other articles of day to day life. Traditionally blue, green, yellow, red and other primary colored beads were commonly used. Stylized human figures, geometrical designs, glimpses of daily life, horse and camel riders, elephant with haudha, horse with carriage, the famous love legend of local hero Dhola and his lover Maru are the designs repeatedly used.
