Lokesh Kumar Jangid: Early Life & Family Details
Lokesh's grandparents and parents originally lived in a village in Nagaur district of Rajasthan. For livelihood, grandfather Madanlal ji Jangid migrated to Maharashtra in 1952 and his family migrated to Maharashtra in 1986 when Lokesh was just four months old. His grandfather was a carpenter by profession and used to go to hamlets in Jintur taluka in Parbhani district in Maharashtra to make wooden doors, wooden ceilings, other furniture.
Lokesh's father Late Ramchandra was contributing to the family work but he unfortunately died in an accident in 1993 and the Jangid family faced a great crisis. Lokesh was seven years old at that time. After that, Lokesh and his siblings were brought up by their grandfather and paternal uncle, his mother being a homemaker.
By dint of his hard work, his grandfather then settled in the district headquarters Parbhani and started his own saw mill there. Lokesh's uncle Ashok Kumar and his younger brother run a plywood business today at the same place.
Lokesh Kumar Jangid: Educational Journey
Lokesh studied till 10th at Model English School, Parbhani and did his 11th and 12th at Bal Vidya Mandir Junior College in Parbhani. Lokesh imbibed the habit of reading newspapers from his grandfather in his childhood.  As an English medium student, when he was learning Barahkhadi at school, Lokesh used to read Hindi newspaper fluently because his grandfather had already taught him ‘Devanagari’ at home before Hindi and Marathi were introduced in the school.
Lokesh used to be good at academics and extra-curricular activities right from his school life.  He stood third in Maharashtra in the state level science fair in class 9 and represented the state at the national level twice in science fairs. Also, he used to actively participate in essay competitions and oratory competitions. On the birthday and death anniversaries of national heroes and great leaders, he used to deliver speeches in every programme in the school. Overall, the foundation was laid in the school life itself. While studying engineering, too, he used to actively participate in extra-curricular events.  He was President of college’s National Service Scheme (NSS) Chapter. Many programs such as digital literacy campaign, rural technology transfer etc were carried out in the village adjacent to the college.
Fascinated with Sociology during civils preparation, he joined full-time Masters programme in Sociology at JNU Delhi. He says he enjoyed Sociology much more than his engineering subjects, and he had not got selected for UPSC, would have possibly continued with a career in academics with Sociology discipline.
Lokesh Kumar Jangid: Inspiration to Become IAS Officer
Lokesh gives all the credit to his grandfather who is his inspiration. Lokesh's grandfather used to read newspapers from his youth despite being a carpenter.  From the first election to the Parliament since 1952 till his last, he keenly followed the political affairs of all the states. He used to give money to Lokesh to buy magazines from Rly station outlet since the time Lokesh was in 7th class.
Lokesh used to watch Doordarshan news, debates of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha on television along with his grandfather. This is how he started following current affairs and politics, and the interest in civil service general studies was kindled.
Based on this, he felt he could make a difference in the system by joining IAS. Though he was fascinated by politics, he knew he couldn’t make it there because of various constraints. So he thought of civil services as the next best option to impact things on a larger scale.

Lokesh Kumar Jangid: Preparing for UPSC Exam
Having started reading newspaper keenly from his early school years, and then magazines like CSR, India Today, Outlook, preparation had already taken off unknowingly. Thereafter, in the library of his engineering college, he regularly read more magazines, including ones like ‘Yojana’ and ‘Kurukshetra’. He got selected for Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) during campus placement when he was in his third year of engineering. But he chose not to join TCS as he felt his calling was something different than a corporate job. So, after completing engineering in 2008, he headed straight to Delhi to prepare for UPSC full-time.
Lokesh's uncle Ashok Jangid fully funded Lokesh's education including the hefty fee for the UPSC coaching in Delhi. “Don't you worry about financials or the TCS job, I am with you, just focus on UPSC if you feel that is your dream”, supported him and never let him feel the absence of his father , moral support wise or financially.
Lokesh Kumar Jangid: Succeeding in UPSC at the First Attempt
Lokesh got All India Rank 910 in UPSC first attempt in 2009 exam based on reserve list. He got his first posting in Lakshadweep islands under DANICS (Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands Civil Service).
Lokesh Kumar Jangid: Continuing His Dream of Achieving IAS Officer Rank
He continued his UPSC preparation by working in the remote islands of Lakshadweep. In his second and third attempts, he couldn’t make it. By the time the fourth attempt was underway, the pattern of the civil services exam had changed completely, with introduction of more subjects and papers in general studies in the Mains exam. In Lakshadweep, newspapers came only once in a fortnight by ship from Kochi but basic internet facility was available. So without any coaching, test series or new material, he continued the preparation by using the material available online and went to Delhi only to write the UPSC main exam. Prepared for interview at Lakshadweep and secured 68th rank in country in CSE 2014.
Lokesh Kumar Jangid: Journey as an IAS Officer
Got MP cadre in the IAS and after one-year training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, joined as Assistant Collector at Sehore in Madhya Pradesh.
After completion of training at LBSNAA, he was then posted as Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Panchayat Raj, Govt of India, for three months to familiarise himself with the policy processes of the Government of India. Furthermore, Roof water harvesting was done on a large scale in all govt buildings in the district due to which the groundwater level increased. The central Government of India declared three ordinances ( or temporary laws in the first week of June 2020, which dealt with agricultural produce, their sale, agriculture marketing, and contract farming improve among other things. The effect of the meetings was three laws, which were passed by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and gained the consent of the President of India. This converted laws into acts on 28th September 2019
The Three Laws
1)Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act:2020

Demand
Immediate demand
Initially, farmers operated APMC (Agriculture Produce Market Committee) mandis for farmers. According to the new law, electronic trading is allowed. The state governments gather from outside the APMC market i.e market fee, cess, the levy for outside the APMC market. This might power the government to see no benefits in preserving the mandi system. Henceforth, the government might do away with it all together giving corporates the businessman.
The repealing of the acts tops the notes with other important demands being: providing security that the state will acquire their farm produce by application of the older buying systems; application of the Minimum Sale Price (MSP) which will help the farmers to make minimum profits even if the open market allows a low price than the cost expenses. decreasing the price of diesel by 50% for agricultural determinations. repealing the fines for stubble burning, and freeing the imprisoned comrades of Punjab—who had been arrested for burning paddy. Reopening places of worship not anyone’s win or defeat: Raut
Tumblr media
MUMBAI: Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday said the Maharashtra government’s decision to reopen places of religious worship in the state was neither a victory nor defeat of anybody. Talking to reporters here, Raut said there was no question of taking credit for reopening the places of worship. Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday announced that places of religious worship in Maharashtra, which have been shut since the Covid-19 lockdown in March, will reopen from Monday. As per the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) released by the state government, religious places located out of Covid-19 containment zones will be allowed to remain open as per the timings decided by authorities, and devotees will be allowed inside in a staggered manner. “The SOPs drafted by the government need to be followed strictly. There is no need to take credit. It was God’s will that people stay at home, and now it is God’s will that places of worship reopen with precautions,” Raut said. To a question on the BJP saying that reopening of temples was a victory of Hindutva, he said not just temples, all places of worship will open. “This is not a victory or defeat of anybody,” Raut said. They were closed on Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s instructions, the Shiv Sena’s chief spokesperson said. Asked about his 60th birthday on Sunday, the Rajya Sabha member said, “I have spent half of my life in ‘Saamana’ (Sena’s mouthpiece), the strength of the Shiv Sena, and will continue to do so.” Raut is currently the executive editor of ‘Saamana’. Earlier, on Saturday, when asked about Barack Obama‘s comments on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the former US president’s new book, Raut told reporters that “foreign leaderscannot comment on politicians of our country”.

Narendra Modi turns 69 today. In itself, the number ’69’ is not ‘abhut purva‘ as the alliterator-in-chief himself might say, except for its more popular connotation. Turning 69 is not any different from turning 67 or 68, and certainly not as significant as turning 70.
The pradhan sevak is still a sexagenarian (wink, wink).
At best, one could truthfully say, in the lazy language of daily journalism, that he has reached an “unprecedented” age—an age he had never reached before. Undoubtedly an age he has reached for the first time since 2014.
Yet, looking at the editorial pages of a dozen newspapers in seven languages today, in fact just looking at the unctuous headlines, it would appear as if readers are being introduced to somebody Indians had not heard of before.
And doing the introductions are honourable members of his ministry, some of whom now seem to have blossomed, at the hands of friendly owners, uncritical editors and other toadies, into full-fledged op-ed columnists churning out hundreds of inches of drivel each month.
***
Leading the pack up-front today is Amit Shah, the arrested, jailed, bailed and externed Gujarati politician who is now Union home minister, who can barely utter a full sentence in English.
Following in the wake of his monumental pieces in The Times of India last month (headlines: “Modi, great reformer” and “A strong-willed PM“), Shah today has a piece in the Hindustan Times, whose headline is even more revealing.
Hopefully, this completes the long-awaited trilogy.
***
Shah’s unputdownable “column” finds its way into Sandesh in Gujarat, the Assam Tribune in the Northeast, the Telugu newspaper Eenadu in Andhra Pradesh, and the Kannada daily Vijaya Vani in the South.
The first three newspapers show due deference to the “real No.1”, as many are calling Shah, by placing his piece on their edit pages.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
***
Vijaya Vani—owned by former BJP MP and MLA, the transport baron Vijay Sankeshwar—takes the mass email a little too seriously, calling it an “exclusive” and using it as an eight-column front-page flyer that jumps into the turn page, which carries a picture of Anand Sankeshwar meeting and greeting Modi during an “exclusive” poll-eve interview.
***
The star of the day, however, is the brilliant Prakash Javdekar, the Union minister for information and broadcasting, whose email to edit page writers probably ended with the kind words, “in favour of publication, or else”.
For, newspaper after newspaper—from the Indian Express in Delhi, to the Orissa Post and Dharithri in Bhubaneshwar, to Pratidin in Bengal—prints the same garbage.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
***
In this ocean of conformism, thankfully, there are still a couple of outliers.
The Times of India is one, using its in-house spiritual fountainhead, Jaggi Vasudev alias Sadhuguru.
And, Prabhat Khabar, the Hindi daily previously edited by Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh, is another, which has a panegyric by Bhupendra Yadav.
***
The effusive praise suggest that despite all the thousands of crores spent on publicity and promotion in the last 64 months, Narendra Modi’s thirst has not been sated.
And the profusion of political bylines once again show that the editorial and op-ed pages have been reduced to little more propaganda pages for the party in power.
To mark Narendra Modi’s “unprecedented” 69th birthday, 11 newspapers in 7 languages respectfully open their editorial pages for the perfect “bow job” by his party colleagues Narendra Modi turns 69 today. In itself, the number '69' is not 'abhut purva' as the alliterator-in-chief himself might say, except for its more popular connotation.

#THEINCIDENCE @Nightingale of Bollywood Turns 89: 11 Little Known Stories About Lata Mangeshkar!
On her 89th birthday, we document some of the lesser-known stories about the legend’s life.
The Nightingale of Bollywood turned 89 today. She has recorded over 27,000 songs in 36 regional and foreign languages.
This is none other than legendary playback singer, Lata Mangeshkar. With melodious and soulful hits like Dafli Wale, Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya, Dil To Pagal Hai, Luka Chupi, the woman who has earned herself the fond moniker of Lata Didi, enraptured the country with her ability to sing in the rare third octave.
But did you know Lata Didi’s original name is Hema? She was renamed Lata based on a character ‘Latika’ from her father’s play, BhaawBandhan.
And so, on her 89th birthday, we document some of the lesser-known stories about the legend’s life:
1. How her father discovered her singing talent at a tender age
A young Lata Mangeshkar.
Lata didi was born into a family of artists where her father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, a classical singer and theatre actor discovered her singing talent.
Deenanath ran a theatre company that produced musical plays where Lata started acting by the age of five.
Lata’s ability to sing Raag Puriya Dhanashree helped him discover her singing talent. Speaking to Stardust, she recalls, “It so happened that once my father asked his shagird (disciple) to practise a raag while he finished some work. I was playing nearby and suddenly a note of the raag that shagird was rendering, jarred. And the next minute, I was correcting him. When my father returned, he discovered a shagird in his own daughter.”
Lata’s father said to her mother, “We have a singer at home. We never knew it.”
2. A legend around why she left school
Lata & Asha – The Mangeshkar Sisters.
At five, Lata started working as an actress in her father’s Marathi musical plays, also known as ‘Sangeet Natak’.
On her first day at school, when she started teaching songs to other children, the teacher stopped her. While some believed that she stopped going to school because she was so angry, others said she left because they would not allow her to bring Asha.
3. Did you know that she made her singing debut in a studio at the age of 13?
Lataji learned music from stalwarts like Aman Ali Khan Sahib and Amanat Khan, apart from her father. She recorded her first song in 1942 for the Marathi film, Kiti Hasaal; but it never saw the light of day, as it was edited from the film. The song was called Naachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani. Although Natali Chaitraachi Navalaai is known as her Marathi song debut.
3. Did you know that she tried her hand at professional acting too?
After he father’s death in 1942, she tried her hand at acting until 1948 and acted in eight films. The oldest of five siblings–Meena, Asha, Usha and Hridaynath, Lata then shouldered the financial responsibility of the family.
Even though her acting career did not take off, she debuted with playback singing for Kiti Hasaal (1942).
4. She was told her voice was ‘too thin’ when she first started out in the industry
When she first entered the film industry as a playback singer, she was rejected. At the time, singers like Noor Jehan and Shamshad Begum ruled the roost. She was told her voice was ‘too thin’ for the time, in comparison to the heavy-nasal voices that belted hits.
Her major break came in 1949, with the song Aayega Aanewala from the film Mahal. She turned a sensation overnight with the song that not many can muster the courage to croon.
5. The time she moved Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to tears
The year was 1962. India had lost the war against China. When Lata Didi sang Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon to salute the martyrs of war, PM Nehru told her she had moved him to tears.
6. She was poisoned in 1962.
Naushad, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi and Majrooh Sultanpuri.
In 1962, when Didi fell extremely ill, her medical investigation revealed that she was given slow poison. She battled death for three days. Even though her life was saved, recovery was a long journey where she remained bedridden for three months.
It was later found that her cook had vanished from her home without taking his wages. For precautionary measures, late Bollywood lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri would regularly visit her, taste her food first and only then allow her to eat.
7. Didi’s love for Cricket, Madan Mohan and Saira Banu
With Madan Mohanji.
Her favourite game is cricket. Didi is reported to have a permanent gallery reserved for her at the Lord’s Stadium from where she enjoys watching her favourite game.
Of all the spectacular music directors she has worked with, Madan Mohan was closest to her heart.
“I shared a special relationship with Madan Mohan, which was much more than what a singer and a music composer share. This was a relationship of a brother and a sister. He trusted me to sing his best compositions,” she said in a 2011 collector’s item calendar.
Didi reportedly thinks her voice suits actress Saira Banu’s the best!
8. A global star!
The legendary singer’s fame goes far beyond the shores. In 1974, Didi became the first Indian to perform in the Royal Albert Hall, London. She has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by six universities, including the New York University.
France conferred its highest civilian award (Officer of the Legion of Honour) on Didi in 2007.
9. She served as an MP without charging a penny!
Didi was also nominated as a Member of Parliament. But her health restricted her from attending the sessions in the Rajya Sabha, which drew the ire of a few.
But according to a TOI report, it is said that she did not take a single penny or a salary or a house in Delhi for her services as an MP.
10. Her designs for a diamond company raked £105,000!
In 1999, the perfume Lata Eau de Parfum was launched in her honour. Didi also designed a collection called Swaranjali for an Indian diamond export company, Adora. Five pieces from this collection, when auctioned at Christie’s, earned £105,000 which Didi generously donated to the relief fund for the Kashmir earthquake in 2005.
11. Her last recorded song was in 2015
It was for an Indo-Pak gay love story. This means that from 1942 to 2015, she worked as a playback singer for 73 years!
In a career spanning seven decades, Didi has been bestowed several prestigious awards including the Bharat Ratna, India’s Highest Civilian Award. Didi became the second vocalist to ever receive it after M S Subbulakshmi!

How Madhya Pradesh Was Central To Atal Bihari Vajpayee's Political Life
BHOPAL: Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s home state Madhya Pradesh played a huge role in shaping his political career as he was elected to the Lok Sabha two times from the state and was also declared the BJP’s prime ministerial face for the first time at a rally 22 years ago.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was born in Gwalior, was elected from the city famous for its palaces and forts to the Lok Sabha in 1971 as the Jan Sangh candidate.
It was at a rally at Manawar, in tribal-dominated Dhar district, that Atal Bihari Vajpayee was first projected as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, a party leader
“Yes, I stand witness to the historic meeting attended by a large number of tribals in Dhar district. At the meeting, BJP patriarch L K Advaniji, for the first time in 1996, announced that Vajpayee will be prime minister in the event of the BJP coming to power at the Centre,” BJP national vice- president Prabhat Jha told PTI.
“That news was flashed across the country. That Vajpayee eventually became prime minister (in the same year) proved that Advani ji was a visionary leader,” said Jha, the then media in-charge of the state BJP.
“Advani ji sprang a surprise by choosing to make that announcement from a remote tribal area, Manawar in Dhar district, but it was carried well the next day in the media across the country,” Mr Jha, a Rajya Sabha MP, said.
LK Advani’s words proved to be correct as Atal Bihari Vajpayee first served as prime minister for a period of 13 days in 1996, second time for 13 months and then for a full five-year term (1999-2004), state BJP
Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born in Gwalior on December 25, 1924 to Krishna Devi and Krishna Bihari Vajpayee in the Shinde Ki Chawni area.
The initial education of the poet-politician took place at Sheopur, then part of the Gwalior region. He later came to Gwalior, where he took admission in the Government Gorkhi Higher Secondary School, a party leader said.
Moved by Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s love for Hindi, his admirer Vijay Singh Chouhan, an advocate, built a temple in 1995 in Satya Narain Ki Tekri area of Gwalior as a tribute to the former prime minister.
Mr Chouhan said, “I was highly impressed with Vajpayee ji for his chaste Hindi address at the United Nations to promote the language. I used to perform his ‘aarti’ daily by keeping a photo of Vajpayee inside the temple.”
“Besides celebrating the Hindi Day every year on September 14, I also celebrate Vajpayee’s birthday on December 25,” he said.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee lost from Gwalior in 1984 to Congress leader Madhavrao Scindia.
In 1991, he contested from Vidisha and Lucknow, and won from both the places. However, he retained Lucknow and vacated Vidisha.

NEW DELHI –  Former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a Hindu nationalist who set off a nuclear arms race with rival Pakistan but later reached across the border to begin a groundbreaking peace process, died on Thursday after a prolonged illness. He was 93.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where Vajpayee had been hospitalized for more than two months for treatment of a kidney infection and chest congestion, announced his death.
Vajpayee, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, suffered a stroke in 2009.
A onetime journalist, Vajpayee was in many ways a political contradiction: He was the moderate leader of an often-strident Hindu nationalist movement. He was a lifelong poet who revered nature but who oversaw India’s growth into a swaggering regional economic power. He was the prime minister who ordered nuclear tests in 1998, stoking fears of atomic war between India and Pakistan. Then, a few years later, it was Vajpayee who made the first moves toward peace.
Vajpayee’s supporters saw him as a skilled politician who managed to avoid fanaticism, a man who refused to see the world in black and white.
But his critics considered him the leader of a fanatic movement — a movement partially rooted in European fascism — that sought power by stoking public fears of India’s large Muslim minority.
The one thing both sides could agree on was his honesty. Vajpayee was that rare thing in Indian politics: a man untainted by corruption scandals.
One of seven children of a schoolteacher in central India, Vajpayee joined India’s Hindu revivalist political movement in his late 20s. Elected to Parliament in 1957, he became the best-known figure in its moderate wing, and helped the Bharatiya Janata Party become one of India’s few national political parties.
One of India’s longest-serving lawmakers, Vajpayee was elected nine times to the powerful Lok Sabha, or lower house of Parliament. He also served two terms in the Rajya Sabha, or upper house.
He led the party to its first national electoral victory in 1996, but lasted just 13 days as prime minister before he resigned in the face of a no-confidence motion. He returned to power in 1998 for 11 months after forging an alliance of 22 parties, mostly regional power brokers with disparate local appeal. He again served as India’s prime minister from 1999 to 2004.
It was in India’s relations with Pakistan where Vajpayee’s influence may last the longest.
While India’s nuclear weapons program is believed to date to the 1980s, New Delhi had long insisted its atomic program was purely for peaceful purposes. That changed within a month of Vajpayee returning to the prime minister’s post in 1998, when he approved a series of nuclear weapons tests that shocked the world and pushed Islamabad to launch its own tests.
But the next year, when Islamabad sent fighters across the cease-fire line that divides the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir between the nations, Vajpayee resisted military pressure to launch a broad counter-attack of Indian forces.
After 11 weeks and more than 1,000 deaths, Pakistan ordered the fighters to withdraw. India earned international praise for its caution.
His peace efforts began with a groundbreaking bus ride to Lahore, Pakistan, in February 1999, where he met with then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The diplomatic journey inaugurated the first regular bus service between the two nations.
Then, just before leaving office in 2004, he launched a peace process that, while often rocky, remains the basis of ongoing negotiations.
Vajpayee avoided bedrock nationalist issues, like plans to build a Hindu temple at the site of a demolished north Indian mosque. But critics excoriated him for failing to quickly quell anti-Muslim riots that shook the state of Gujarat in 2002. More than 1,100 people, almost all of them Muslim, were killed in the riots, which began after a train fire killed 60 Hindu pilgrims. Muslims were accused of setting the fire, though the true cause was never known.
Vajpayee’s public response to the riots reflected his many contradictions.
In the days after the pogrom, Vajpayee said he could not understand how Hindus could burn women and children alive, sadly asking a group of Muslim survivors: “Have we lost our way so much that we cease to be humans?”
Just a year later, though, he told a mostly Hindu audience, “Wherever there are Muslims in large numbers, they do not want to live in peace.”
While known for his poetry and gifted with a politician’s common touch — as a parliamentarian he would take his dogs for walks in public — he was not known for public introspection. Few people could claim to understand what drove him. He never married, but lived with his adopted daughter, her husband and their daughter.
Vajpayee quickly dropped from sight after the BJP lost power to the long-dominant Congress party in 2004 elections. As his health failed, Vajpayee stayed out of the limelight even when the BJP returned to power a decade later and Narendra Modi became prime minister.
Modi’s government presented Vajpayee as an icon, seeking inspiration from his political career and cashing in on his stature and popularity as a statesman acceptable across political divides.
In 2015, the government honored him with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, while his Dec. 25 birthday was declared “Good Governance Day” in a tribute to his leadership.
