Pavement Revisit Their Catalog on the First Night at Brooklyn Steel
Tumblr media
Pavement – Brooklyn Steel – September 11, 2023
Like a special deal at the department store, Pavement are back, for a limited time only, returning to Brooklyn for four nights at Brooklyn Steel this week. The run opened on Monday, the band taking the stage to “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” by the Georgia Satellites, which seemed to make sense, the packed crowd giddy with excitement as Pavement kicked into the instrumental “Heckler Spray” and then “Feed ’Em to the (Linden) Lions.” Each song more than 30 years old but felt as fresh as ever, the band — six members strong — bathed in red light, double guitars and double drums causing spastic energy as frenetic projections flickered on the screen behind them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The tone was set for the night as Pavement wandered up and down the proverbial aisles of their catalog, relaying messages from the past and reminding the present that the reason their material is so relevant is because it remains so influential to many current artists. “Starlings of the Slipstream” was an early highlight, a symphony of electric guitars, heavy and light at the same time, thrilling the old-guard fans. Frontman Stephen Malkmus was vibrant in his singing and his guitar playing, characteristically drawing out some syllables here, shortening others there, creating rhythms in his vocals on classic Pavement songs like “Gold Soundz,” psychedelic meeting indie meeting punk, guitar chords going longer or shorter to match.
The set mimicked the variety and nonlinearity, some tunes feeling too short, finished before they could get going, others, like “Folk Jam,” stretched into extended off-kilter screeches of guitar to match Malkmus’s surrealistic imagery. The evolution of Pavement’s sound suffused the set decades after the fact: The raging energy of “Serpentine Pad,” the woozy rhythms of “The Hexx,” the fractured blues of “Fight This Generation.” The show’s energy waxed and waned, building to a nifty extended noodle section in “Type Slowly,” and then fading out with the set-closing “Major Leagues.” The band returned for a three-song encore, punctuated by the punchy, melancholy slow-burn of “Stop Breathin.” But wait, there’s more: Three additional chances to catch Pavement in Brooklyn before they’re gone again. —A. After all these years, ‘I Remember You’ is still one of the great highlights of Adventure Time Storytelling. And not just in the basic ‘what???? Silly children’s cartoon does something SAD??? HOLY SHIT MIND BLOWN’ way. But with the execution of that Something Sad. How it manages to pack so many Complex Emotions into just 11-minutes of television. And especially the way it utilizes the basic Adventure Time format for that purpose.
So Adventure Time is a Board-based show. Each episode has an outline pitched and written down by the writer’s room, and then this outline goes to a team of (usually) two Storyboard Artists who develop that simple outline into a full story. And with the show’s art-style deliberately eschewing staying perfectly ‘on-model’ in favor of having the animators take direct reference from how the different storyboarders draw the characters
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the show being generally extremely versatile in terms of themes and tone - AT has allowed a lot of their Storyboarders to really express themselves and their unique artistic vision as part of the Big Collaborative Narrative that is Adventure Time.
Now, the Boarders who worked on ‘I Remember You’ are Cole Sanchez and Rebecca Sugar. These two were a Storyboarding Duo from the start of S4 and until Sugar left the AT Crew during S5, and they always struck me as a curious combination. I think really from all of the individual boarders working on AT during that time, these two really are the closest to having like… Totally Opposite Artistic Sensibilities as boarders.
With Sugar favoring a style that is very loose and sketchy and also very rounded. Focusing on expressions and subtle body language and lighting. And being famous for going deep in depth into Big Moments of Emotional Catharsis
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Sanchez having a very clear art style that emphasizes strong silhouettes and clear lines that suggest flatness. Focusing more on major poses and the character’s positions in the space. And having just a really great eye for AT’s brand of silly humor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, I almost kinda suspect these two were paired together so they can each cover for the other’s “weakspots” in writing ‘Adventure Time’.
And there were a few episodes that did some really interesting stuff with this very contrasting pair - ‘Jake the Dog’ is another example. Giving most of the Farmworld scenes to Sugar and most of the Time Room scenes to Sanchez both plays to their personal strengths as storyboarders and helps to emphasize the strong emotional contrast between these two scenarios.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And ‘I Remember You’ is actually kinda unique among Adventure Time episodes cause… Most episodes will have the two boarders alternate between working on the episode throughout it. Like you’d have Boarder A draw a bit and then Boarder B and then Boarder A again… But “I Remember You” is divided between Sanchez and Sugar… basically perfectly in the middle.
So the entirety of the first half of the episode was boarded by Sanchez
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Until Ice King pushes Marceline and then leaves the room in shame.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, Sugar takes over.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, like, even if you don’t know anything about the Behind the Scenes of Adventure Time or who Cole Sanchez and Rebecca Sugar even are - the Shift is noticeable. The shift in tone, in narrative focus, in the subtleties in which the characters are drawn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The entire first half of the episode has this thin veneer of just being a Silly Goofy Ice King Episode. Sanchez’s talent for Adventure Time’s brand of comedy is on full display… but there is also this underlying feeling that Something is Happening just under the surface. And these hints of the Big Emotions of ‘IRY’ expressed via Sanchez’s kinda goofy style really create this balance between putting the audience into a false sense of security that this is just a Very Normal Episode about two characters hanging out and the Tension constantly brewing in the subtext.
And then it all comes to a blow.
Tumblr media
And then the Shift happens. And now we are in Sugar’s court.
Tumblr media
And this subtle shift in the artstyle and storytelling also coincide with Marceline finally openly expressing her feelings and the Reveal of Simon and Marcy's shared past. The episode changes focus from Ice King's silly antics to Marceline's feelings. Everything changes, everything in the first part of the episode gets recontextualized and... even on the most basic level, the episode is now Noticeably Different.
I would almost say that Sanchez’s half of the episode has Ice King define the tone, while Sugar’s half of the episode has Marceline define the tone. But more than anything it’s the catharsis. The reveal and release of those emotions that were building up so expertly through the Sanchez half of the episode. All of the Sugar-boarded scenes in this episode are really heartbreaking on their own, just through the tragedy of the story and Sugar’s expert knowledge of howto convey emotion in the visual medium - but it’s so enchanted by what came before it.
“I Remember You” is truly a great testament to how ‘Adventure Time’ could use every aspect of its medium to tell a great story in such a short time.

Doll house photos under the read more
Alright so I haven’t had time to buy contact paper for the flooring, or figure out wallpaper, or even finish decorating some of these rooms but here’s the current progress!
Tumblr media
First up, Kits room! Kit, Ruthie and Sterling (played by Eli) are plotting their next adventure!
Tumblr media
Below that we have Samantha’s room, where Rebecca is also hanging out! I got Samantha’s bed, nightstand and Clara (plus the dress that Nellie is in) from a really great Facebook marketplace find! Also I wanted Rebecca’s menorah to be on display until I have the space for a room specifically for Rebecca!
Tumblr media
Next up we have the parlor! At the moment it’s Elizabeth and Felicity taking tea in there (with Lydia serving tea) but I plan to switch between it being for Elizabeth and Felicity, Caroline and Lydia, & Cecile and Marie-Grace! So my goal is to try and get the back walls looking similar to Caroline’s parlor! Also I don’t know if I’ve properly introduced Lydia because I got her in the same week as Lindsey and Emily (I didn’t intend to buy 3 dolls that week lol), but this is my gorgeous truly me #21 that I found for pretty cheap on Mercari about a month or 2 ago.
Tumblr media
Then on the other bookcase we have Courtney’s bedroom! I plan to move the shelf above this up to give it a higher ceiling and set out more of Courtney’s sleepover stuff but for now her and Abby are enjoying just hanging out!
Tumblr media
Above that we have the game room, which currently only has my GOTY’s on display. Joss and Corrine are in a heated game of air hockey, while Kailey and Lindsey are on the computer. I was shocked to see the twin’s computer at the benefit sale this past year and I’m soooo glad I picked it up!
Tumblr media
Here’s a better look at Kailey and Lindsey on the computer.
Tumblr media
Then finally we have the room that I plan to change out for different scenes. Right now it’s a camping scene. Originally it just had Nicki, Mia and Sprocket, but my mom was like “you should add Luciana and her telescope!” So now Luci is third wheeling Mia and Nicki’s camping date 😂 (did I mention my Nicki and Mia are dating? Bc they’re dating)
I can’t wait to figure out wallpaper and flooring but that’ll probably take a few weeks since I know I’m traveling next weekend, and then pride is the weekend after that. (Yes I know it’s October but they wait til it’s cooler out where I live bc it’s unsafe to hold pride in the middle of summer bc of the heat). But hopefully I’ll have some wallpaper and flooring done by Halloween!

using the tiermakers made by @americangirlstar and coming up with some interesting metrics for how the girls' collections are distributed. Samantha has the biggest one, despite currently being cubed (T_T), with Molly as a close second, partially due to all the reprints and re-releases she's had. Poor Claudie has the smallest collection by far.
even MORE info/observations under the cut:
i accidentally put caroline's cow under outfits instead of accessories, o o p s
Rebecca's last category is supposed to say "Somehow both clothes and furniture/accessories" - Rebecca's Costume Chest and Rebecca's School Play Set were both available at one point or another with the furniture/accessories as separate components and at a different point bundled together like in the pictures, and her Seashore Set always came with the chair.
NOT adjusted for reprints, re-releases, revamps that change the accessories (i.e. Addy's Kite-Flying Outfit/Flower-Picking Outfit aka Dress and Bouquet/Blue Dress, which are all the same dress but with different accessories) or adjustments under the same name (i.e. the four variations of Molly's dog Bennett)
best friends and their collections are grouped with the main historicals
some of these were kind of hard to determine what was "furniture" vs "accessories", so my general rule of thumb was:
Dolls: if what you purchased would include the doll itself, as well as mini dolls
Outfits: clothes for the doll - had to be composed of at least either a full body outfit OR shirt/pants - shoes/socks/hats/ribbons/etc that came with them are included
Accessories: shoes/socks/hats/ribbons/etc that needed to be purchased SEPARATELY from the doll or an outfit (i.e. Samantha's Elegant Hat and Muff was sold separately from her Plaid Cape and Gaiters despite always being pictured together) OR small handheld items, such as dolls for the dolls and other toys OR pets, as they're clearly meant to compliment the collection.
Furniture: obviously things like tables and chairs, but also big items like trunks or playsets, and small items, like table settings. basically if it could qualify as a household furnishing, it would go here.
Girls + Misc: Clothes or other accessories, life-sized edition.
Books + Misc: books, puzzles, games, you name it, as long as it's printed and for humans to use
??????: stuff that didn't fit anywhere OR i couldn't tell what it was
I couldn't decide where some items belonged - the horses are big and expensive enough that they should qualify as furniture, but theyre yknow. animals. which were all going in accessories otherwise, since they're clearly part of a collection complementing the doll and not just a standalone item.
The funniest case of this is probably Felicty's sister Polly, who could reasonably be categorized as either of those (comes with cradle, which is household furnishings; is clearly meant to compliment Felicity's collection, like the pets) OR a doll (cause she. is one.)

how sweet it is (to be loved by you)
5.5k | chapter 1/2 | teen and up | for @trippedandfell <333333
“Hello?” The groggy voice on the other end greets him.
“Why are there so many types of flour?” Eddie blurts, eyebrows creasing together. “I mean, they all come from the same plant, right?”
It’s silent for a few seconds, save for the rustling of what Eddie assumes is bedsheets. “Hey, Buck. How’s your day off going? Oh, it’s going great, Eddie. Thanks for asking!”
“Buck,” Eddie definitely doesn’t whine, because he’s a thirty four year old man, thanks. “Help.”
Buck sighs dramatically, and the line goes quiet for a few seconds before it beeps, signalling an incoming facetime call which Eddie immediately accepts. He tries not to get immediately distracted by Buck's sleep mussed hair, his half lidded eyes and his pouty lips. He really has it all under control.
(or Chris has a bake sale coming up. Eddie's freaking out. Buck just wants to help.)

the tvd fandom does realise that Mikael’s last name isn’t Mikaelson, right? We don’t know his last name bc we don’t know his father’s name and the Norsemen had patronymic names.

[From Rebecca Solnit]
I collect quotes, starting a new document every year I paste them into as I encounter them. The collections go back several years. Here's a few from 2023's album.
“We are all here to serve each other. At some point we have to understand that we do not need to carry a story that is unbearable. We can observe the story, which is mental; feel the story, which is physical; let the story go, which is emotional; then forgive the story, which is spiritual, after which we use the materials of it to build a house of knowledge.”
— Joy Harjo
"American racism has many moving parts, and has had enough centuries in which to evolve an impressive camouflage. It can hoard its malice in great stillness for a long time, all the while pretending to look the other way. Like misogyny, it is atmospheric. You don’t see it at first. But understanding comes."
-Teju Cole
"Being queer saved my life. Often we see queerness as deprivation. But when I look at my life, I saw that queerness demanded an alternative innovation from me. I had to make alternative routes, it made me curious, it made me ask this is not enough for me.”
– Ocean Vuong
Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own: "It was strange to think that all the great women of fiction were, until Jane Austen's day, not only seen by the other sex, but seen only in relation to the other sex."
+
Masha Gessen interviewing Judith Butler in 2020:
MG: You begin with a critique of individualism “as the basis of ethics and politics alike.” Why is that the starting point?
JB: In my experience, the most powerful argument against violence has been grounded in the notion that, when I do violence to another human being, I also do violence to myself, because my life is bound up with this other life. Most people who are formed within the liberal individualist tradition really understand themselves as bounded creatures who are radically separate from other lives. There are relational perspectives that would challenge that point of departure, and ecological perspectives as well. Our interdependency serves as the basis of our ethical obligations to one another. When we strike at one another, we strike at that very bond.

I've thought of another faux fic title! How about..."Can't Think Straight"? ❤️
Hmm. This vexes me...
Oh wait I got it!
Jake held his head in his hands, his thumbs rubbing at his temples as he groaned. It had been a long week and it was only lunch on Tuesday.
"What's up, Hangman?" Coyote chirped as he sat down across from him in the mess hall.
"I can't think straight," Jake grumbled in response, not lifting his head.
"You're bi, of course you can't think straight, dumbass," Coyote chucked.
Jake's head snapped up and he hissed at Coyote to keep quiet. "Man, no one here knows."
"Man, everyone here knows." Coyote shrugged as he turned back to his food, leaving Jake stunned at the revelation.
