My final stories for Vue Weekly

On Nov. 29, 2018 beloved Edmonton alt-weekly Vue Weekly published its final edition. Prior to that Iâd neglected to share links to my clips from recent months, so hereâs a list of my final seven stories in Vue Weekly after two years of freelancing for the paper.

(ID: A picture of an Alstroemeria Fox from Flight Rising, a pink and white fox-like creature with pink alstroemerias on its neck and body. Next to it is a digital drawing of a red and white cat with an alstroemeria on its tail. End ID.)

(ID: A picture of an Animated Armor from Flight rising, a gold and red dragon-shaped suit of armor. Next to it is a digital drawing of a yellow cat with large red patches, and thick fur around itâs neck and forehead, mimicking a breastplate and visor. End ID.)

(ID: A picture of an Armored Colony from Flight Rising, a white armadillo with large yellow and red mushrooms on its back. Next to it is a digital drawing of a short white cat with gray, yellow, and red spots. End ID.)

(ID: A picture of a Blooming Strangler from Flight Rising, a large green and red snake. Next to it is a digital drawing of a green-ish grey cat with red patches. End ID.)
As a little art exercise, I thought Iâd try drawing some Flight Rising familiars are warrior cats. It was fun, I might do it again. I even gave them warrior names and little personalities.
The first one is Foxflower, sheâs the Skyclan med cat. Young, chipper, and loves pranks and mischief.
Next is Redpatch, a Thunderclan warrior. Heâs prickly and stubborn, but not a bad cat.
Then thereâs my favorite, Mushroomspot. Side note, more warrior names should include mushroom. Heâs old and a bit grumpy, but has a soft spot for the young cats in the clan. He used to be the Riverclan med cat, but is now retired.
Finally, Snakebloom, the Shadowclan deputy. Sheâs sharp tempered, but unerringly loyal.

The Art of War and the Killing Joke - The Comedy Company

(The PPCLI Comedy Company circa 1917-1919 - photo, public domain)
From 1914-1918, more than 600,000 Canadians packed up their troubles and merrily marched, flags waving, into the trenches and foxholes of Flanders and France. By the time the Armistice was signed at 11:00 am on November 11, 1918, more than 59,000 were dead, over 172,000 wounded. Globally, more than 10 million soldiers died, resulting in a âlost generation.â White crosses row on row, cenotaphs, literature, and visual art are some of The Great Warâs tangible legacies. The lingering wounds of bereaved families and communities as well as the true extent of the conflictâs effects on the nationâs psyche are sepia-toned intangibles.
The development of Canadian sketch comedy is one of the Great Warâs unexpected legacies. When playwright and history buff Neil Grahn was sorting through the archives of a Canadian regiment â Princess Patriciaâs Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) â for another project, he discovered the fascinating story of the PPCLI Comedy Company. The tiny band of soldiers entertained their comrades; they fought, Ross rifles in hand, in some of the warâs bloodiest theatres.
Their story is the subject of Grahnâs script, The Comedy Company Or: Whatâs So Funny about Death, Mud, and Machine Guns? A Fictional Recounting of an Absolutely True Story. It traces the companyâs journey through the Ypres Salient, juxtaposing their original comedy sketches and songs with the grinding realities of war â its sounds, smells, textures, and shell shock.

(Battle scene, The Comedy Company - photo Marc J. Chalifoux)
âOur involvement in World War One was immersive,â says Grahn âIt nearly drowned us.â
The real Comedy Company was the brainchild of Major, later Lieutenant Colonel, Agar Adamson. His rationale was simple and a bit chilling. Lift the troopsâ morale through humour, let them escape the horrors, inspire them to fight through the meat grinder of trench warfare.
LILLEY: Okay, Iâm looking at it like this. If we can come up with a show that makes the rest of our boys forget, even for minute, what a stinking, butcherâs shop weâre all stuck in - then maybe weâll be doing some good.
FENWICK: Yeah, I guess if we can get the boys to relax and have a laugh, they might be a little sharper next time theyâre in the front trenches.
CUNNINGHAM: Exactly. Itâs a simple formula. We boost morale - make troops more happy. Troops feel better - they kill more Germans.
MCLAREN: Yes! And when we kill enough Fritzies, they give up, the war ends, and we get to go home! Our little showâs ultimate mission is to help our boys with their killing. Weâre going to create comedy for killing!
CUNNINGHAM: You know what McLaren? Thatâs the first thing youâve said today Iâve liked. âComedy for killingâ â Letâs hear it on three boys! One, two threeâŠ
ALL: Comedy for killing!
(The Comedy Company, Act I, Scene 7)

(Sheldon Elter and Andrew MacDonald Smith - photo Marc J. Chalifoux)
âThis company was absolutely used as a tool by high command,â says Grahn, âbut its execution brought the men together. Yes, it was designed for esprit de corps, but it was good on a human scale because it allowed an escape for the men. What fascinated me, what forms the heart of the show is the story of humans finding morale and sanity in a situation that dwarfs anything anyoneâs experienced in terms of horror and discomfort. That attitude of âI hate the bastards that started this thing. I joke so that I may liveâ.â
Moreover, the troupe laid the foundation of a uniquely Canadian brand of sketch comedy.
âThese guys were the granddaddies of sketch as we know it in Canada,â Grahn says. âIâm part of that legacy through things like The Irrelevant Show and Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie. They looked at life around them and made fun of that; the rifles, webbing, bully beef, and mud in boots. It was authentic, Canadian, not the usual British thing of singing Gilbert and Sullivan. The form came back to Canada â which at the time was trapped in the pincers of America and Britain. It is part of our national character. Wow.â

(Sheldon Elter, Jesse Gervais, Steven Greenfield, and Andrew MacDonald Smith dance a cancan in The Comedy Company - photo Marc J. Chalifoux)
The play joins a canon of scripts by Alberta playwrights that take on different aspects of the Canadian experience of WW1 â Vern Thiessenâs Vimy and Stephen Massicotteâs Maryâs Wedding. Although The Comedy Company examines a different aspect of the conflict, it too is an act of remembrance.
âOne hundred years isnât really such a long time ago,â says Shadow Theatre artistic director John Hudson, who also directs the show. âMy Great Uncle was one of the many underage soldiers who enlisted under a false name. He never came home. I choke up when I think of him and how it destroyed the family. They were wrecked, and my story is just one of millions. Go to Newfoundland and on July 1, they remember the Newfoundland Regiment, which was slaughtered on July 1, 1916 at Beau Hamel.â
Both Hudson and Grahn agree that the men of The Comedy Company were âcomedian warriorsâ who helped their comrades through the worst, and probably allowed many to survive in the face of despair.

(Nathan Cuckow, Sheldon Elter, and Steven Greenfield hunker down in a trench - image Marc J. Chalifoux)
Several of the men were wounded, and the first commanding officer, Lieutenant Cunningham, was so badly injured in the attack on Vimy Ridge he never returned to active duty. Lieutenant Colonel Adamson was seriously wounded at Passchendaele â but The Comedy Company marched on into memory and applause. The conclusion of their story is beautifully summed up by Edmontonâs Colin Maclean in his Gig City review:
âLater, the comedy troupe joined with another collection of players to form the famous âDumbells.â They performed before the King and even had a run on Broadway.
But, mostly, they continued to entertain the troops.
More full disclosure: I grew up with stories about the âDumbellsâ because one evening, in the audience, among hundreds of his fellows, was my own father. He never forgot that night.â
Shadow Theatreâs production of The Comedy Company runs at the Varscona Theatre until November 11. Tickets are available here.
There are many events in Edmonton commemorating Remembrance Day and the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. Here are a few

PROLOGUE
I looked out of the cool, damp cave I stood in, and wondered where I was. I saw a faint, glittering shape rising from the mist. In fact, she looked like she was the mist. She spoke to me, warning me about the dark evil approaching. The living cats are already being swallowed up by the demon warriors lodging their slimy, rank bodies inside the earth. She introduced herself as Moongrass, one of the ancient cats that once roamed the territory of the clans. She had died long ago, and she tried to tell me the secret of the demons. But it was too lateâŠ
CHAPTER ONE
I woke up, breathing heavily. It felt like the entire world was pressed down against my chest. My mother looked at me worriedly, and asked if I was okay. I said I was fine, and curled up in the nest and tried to forget the horrifying image that seemed to be permanently burned into the back of my eyelids. The wind howled in my ears, and I tried to grasp what Moongrass had said before the demons appeared and- wait, I really donât want to say it. It was too much for my three moon old brain to understand.Â
I yawned, and reached my outstretched paw out of the nursery, as our nest is closest to the door. There are other nests, but they are all empty because Flowersorrow and her kits Plantpaw, Creampaw ,and Featherpaw all left the nursery a moon ago. I cautiously, slowly stood up, and tripped over my own tail. Brownkit, as always, slept through the heavy thud of my body falling on the floor. Woodcrow, however, pricked her ears and said âShallowkit, what are you doing? Get into the nest now.â I looked at her, alarmed, sheepishly hung my head, and crawled back into the nest feeling a bit embarrassed.Â
CHAPTER TWO
Soon it was dawn, and the warriors slipped out of their dens effortlessly, like paws sliding around on wet leaves on the forest floor. My mother allowed my brother and I to explore camp, but that was all, we weren't allowed out of camp because there werenât any warriors to look after us. We had seen some apprentices leave camp through a hole in the gorse wall surrounding the hollow, on our first day out of the nursery. I took a sneaky glance at the hole in the wall, and made sure my mother wasn't looking. I stealthily padded away, making as little noise as I could. On my way through the gorse wall, my fur brushed against the thorns, alerting the Clan of my departure. I huddled down into a dip in the barrier, hiding myself as well as possible. My blue-grey fur stood out against the bush, but I was so absorbed in my task of hiding that I didnât give a second thought about my fur. Woodcrow came up behind me, startling me out of my hole. She grabbed my scruff and dragged me back to the nursery, scolding me with her muffled voice, telling me that I was foolish and that if I had left camp it couldâve been dangerous. Â
CHAPTER THREE
I was confined to the nursery for a quarter-moon, only allowed out if there was a warrior with me. It was embarrassing, making dirt with older cats staring at me, but I was forced to live with it until my punishment was over. Every day, I pretended I was asleep for as long as I could, so the warriors werenât forced to look after me when they could be hunting or patrolling. When my punishment ended, however, the Clan was looking at me warily, wondering if I was going to plan a âdaringâ escape again. Whenever a cat came to scold me about trying to leave, I would glare at them until they walked away. I obviously wasnât intimidating at all, but I liked to think I scared off the big, powerful warriors by myself.
CHAPTER FOUR
Sometimes I think my mother, Woodcrow, named me because my brain seemingly couldnât grasp the concept of âyou canât do this, but you can do thatâ. I mean, of course I understood! I was nearly four moons, after all!
