This is after reading the most recent chapter today but im noticing a recurring theme in onk…dependency in a way. Hikaru was dependent on Ai and Ai was kinda dependent on it too in some way because she was just as starved for affection. Ruby/Sarina depending on Aqua/Gorou, Gorou was once depending on Ai to cope with Sarina's death, Aqua was depending on Akane at some point to "escape" from his revenge that had plot holes he didn't want to see (thinking Uehara was the father and he died but it wasn't him), well, calling it depending might be wrong since he genuinely wanted to be with her…Akane is depending on Aqua because the latter saved his life and wants to save him in return, Kana is kind of dependent on Aqua too, she always or most of the time, thinks about him…maybe depending is the wrong word for all of this, maybe im wrong, but I keep thinking about "my Oshi" and everyone oshi-ing each other, please feel free to correct me, this is just a bigger picture i understood with likely many holes in it

I NEED to fuckin find the interview I keep thinking of but Akasaka once identified relationships between people as the key motif of Oshi no Ko and specifically, the ways they can be warped and distorted by the entertainment industry. Dependency and co-dependency are naturally emergent topics of discussion under this theming and I think the way Aka ties it in with the concept of 'oshi'-ing someone is really interesting.
推し ('oshi') as it's used in JP fandoms does literally just mean 'support' and OnK explores relationships of support of all kinds - friendship, familial, romantic and even in the workplace. It posits that the key to a happy and emotionally healthy life is to cultivate a wide support network, to feather your nest and love as many people as you can, to give and receive support as and when it's needed. Humans can't live alone and everyone in Oshi no Ko is human, however hard they try not to be.
But of course, the other side of the coin to support is dependency. And that isn't always bad! Children depend on their caregivers before they can look after themselves. People depend on family and friends in times of needs. In an ideal world, everyone should be able to give and receive as much support and dependency as is healthy for them.
But of course, taken too far, dependency can be unhealthy - if it becomes the single point of failure in someone's existence the that reliance, that 'support,' can become stifling and even potentially toxic to both the one providing support and the one receiving it. Ch153 shows a really good microcosm of this in HKAI, just based on how he describes their relationship:

To Hikaru, his and Ai's relationship is a world comprised of two broken people, only able to understand and love each other and nobody else. He projects onto her, as someone equally starved and unable to exist independently as he is; the relationship is, by design and intent, co-dependent. It's no wonder he describes its ending as 'the world collapsing'.

The Art of Falling: 'The Fall Guy' Balances Action and Heart
The Fall Guy is a movie that has everything trending in the right direction before you even view it. Likable actors on full display. Explosions in full force, action that looks amazing. The big question, though, is how does that all come together as a final movie?
Let's jump right into that. There is a lot to unpack here. This movie has a lot of moving parts and a lot of commetary on the film industry. Some parts of it work, and some feel like a grandiose message that may not come across as the film intended.
What immediately works is the chemistry between Blunt and Gosling. Absolutely, without a doubt, they seemed to be having a blast with this film. Without this working on the level it does, this film never stood a chance. It is remarkable the way they played off another to keep the tension of the romance throughout the movie. It elevates the crazy stunts that surround the narrative.

The story of this movie is rather simple. Lead actor missing on set. Man, in love with a woman, he thinks he blew his only shot with and now he wants to make up for the past mistakes. That is a story we have seen countless times but never set against the backdrop of a Hollywood style production. The subplot itself of the missing lead actor (played by Aaron Taylor Johnson) becomes its own thriller within the larger movie. At times, they try and do too much with that, and it leads to some predictable troupes being used to propel the story into the third act.
This movie works as a means to highlight the people who are often overlooked the most on a films production. While this movie does highlight that, the over reliance on predictable fight sequences and action sequences may have hindered that message. Most of the stunts in this movie we have seen before. For a movie that tries to show how much these performers are willing to do, they probably should have pushed that envelope a little more.
The love story is what works the best. Colt wanting to prove his love for Jody was what kept the film grounded and fun. It is really comedic at times, and that works as well to keep you invested in the plot. I just expected a little less predictability in terms of the action sequences and set pieces to elevate it above the genre norm.
While not shocking at all, the best part about this movie is the cast. That is fully what was expected going in. This movie made me laugh far more than I expected to and made me believe in the love between the two characters. Overall, the movie does its job at being solidly entertaining and a fun time while soaking it all in. Definitely worth the watch.

Unexpectedly hard question that I've been thinking about for days now, thanks Rifle! Done my best to answer with things I don't see on tumblr all the time.
tl;dr: Book (fiction): The Wizard of Earthsea. Book (nonfiction): Worn: a People's History of Clothing. Movie: The Secret of Roan Inish. TV: skipped in favor of explaining why you should go watch speedrunning to learn how computers work. Fic: The Edge by jplus (link below).
The in depth summaries/rec:
Book (fiction): the Wizard of Earthsea series by Ursula K le Guin. A bunch of short novels investigating what it means to be a person and grow into yourself as seen through the eyes of a number of different characters from different walks of life. Set against the backdrop of some of the most breathtaking worldbuilding I have ever read.
Book (nonfiction): Worn: a people's history of clothing by Sofi Thanhauser. An in depth look into the social history of clothing and cloth, and with a heavy focus on the global commerce's reliance on the fast fashion industry. If you want to know why the clothing market is Like That and exactly how deeply western economies/foreign policies revolve around cheap and exploitive labor, this book is for you. Heads up: it is a very heavy read.
Movie: The Secret of Roan Inish (1994). A story about family and growing up and industrialization taking over nature/the old ways and the sea. And also about selkies. You know that post that goes around about "that one weird movie your parents happened to have (on vhs) that absolutely no one else has heard of and also that changed your life?" Yeah. This one's my very favorite childhood movie.
TV show (but not really): I...really just don't watch any shows anymore, so I'll pivot and answer something that was not asked instead! Which is:
If you want to learn how computers work on a practical level (hardware, software, programming) but it's always been so abstract or confusing or you just can't visualize what is going on and it refuses to stick in your head (...this is me), I cannot recommend watching in-depth technical explanations of video game speedrunning enough. They tend to be an excellent demonstration of the intricacies and delicate balance of programming and exactly what it means to break/screw with that balance, in a way that is a very visual and memorable and often funny. Seriously. 10 university classes on programming don't hold a candle to what I got out of a few well-commentated GDQ speedruns. DM me for specific video recs.
Fanfic: The Edge (series), by jplus. An epic that explores the Star Wars plot from Rogue One onward through the end of the Sequels, the stories of which are all twisted (in excellent directions) to fit into this AU. Mostly follows the separate but interwoven stories of Bodhi (who survived to fight in the Rebellion) and Jyn/Cassian (who are stranded on a planet with only the barest ability to communicate back and yet manage to contribute to the rebellion anyway). Deals with survivor's guilt, ptsd, trauma, healing, growing, and moving on. AMAZING worldbuilding. Told in a non-linear fashion that helps break up what would otherwise be unbearable building plot tension.
This is ultimately a rebelcaptain kid-fic (way down the line) and one of the only one's I've read where I can see "yeah in this specific world they might have kids". Also, since it's my unofficial RO fic litmus test: some of the best characterization of Davits Draven I've ever seen.

OMG thank you for this trust? I highly rec the traitor baru cormorant!!! its very deftly written, devastating in the emotional tone it sets and one of the best fictional explorations of the ways imperialism warps everyone in its orbit. it doesn't fetishise pre industrial societies and is committed to exploring the psychology of a very wide variety of characters. i have criticisms! its over reliance on the competence of the empire to move the plot forward can get annoying and undercut some of the positions it takes on history but this is a minor note on an otherwise excellent book. fair warning that this is very much in the vein of fantasy that loves worldbuilding, so you will have a lot of pages dedicated to how economic inflation works. this is something i enjoy but ymmv.
i cannot speak for the sequels tyrant and monster because i haven't read them.

just a rant about bl series and fanservice
while i agree that humans can't "queerbait", i don't see how the "dating"/"coming out" jokes made on aprils fool day are funny or harmless at all. there's already so much stigma against thai bl series, especially with the excessive koojin fanservice accompanied to promote their works, i feel like these 'harmless" jokes and fanservice only reinforce this stereotype esp with those actors who can’t act..
funnily enough, on the same day bright rapheephong was answering an interview today about his new series and he was asked about starring in bl series and i love how he reiterate AGAIN the point that he's an actor first and foremost so the works he choose are just dependent on the genres, plots, stories that interest or challenge him, doesn't want to limit himself to just bl series or differentiate between bl/non bl actor.
idk i just wish thai bl industry had enough faith that sometimes strong script and great performances can carry a series without reliance on the pseudo dating koojin fanservice... i mean i love seeing my fave actors having their cute little friendly moments too but i've literally never seen the excessive pseudo dating act go well for these koojins and their delulu sao y fans 🥲

Also alas Imogen can’t use Mage Hand to get things off high shelves at work because some customer would complain. Probably Esther Hayes.
In Ye Olden Times when the theory of humors in disease was still prevalent (debunked with the advent of germ theory in the 1850s but the practices based on it remained in common use until the late 19th century* ) the first treatment given to a patient would be to rid them of “excess” humors by bloodletting and inducing vomiting, doubtless rendering an already miserable person even moreso. Leeches, fire cupping, or a lancet were used for the former, and mustardseed or antimonials (made with the toxic metal antimony :[ ) were used for the latter. Mustardseed was also used to make poultices for sore throats and respiratory ailments. Licorice was used for sore throats and itchy skin. Baths from epsom salts or oatmeal were (and are) used to relieve the itchiness from rash-causing diseases like the one the town is currently experiencing.** Quinine was actually mostly used for malaria so one person is confused about what’s going around. Belladonna (aka deadly nightshade), although toxic, actually had some effectiveness as a preventative for scarlet fever if taken early after exposure. And laudanum, as I have mentioned before, was used for everything. So there’s some context for all the assorted shopping lists bombarding Imogen over the first three panels.
(* which I mention because Exandria’s technological level as of C3 seems to be early Industrial Era, although my Gelvaan aesthetic also has some 1880s and 1930s elements. And magical healing seems to be reserved for the privileged, given the high cost of healing potions, how many strings the relatively-anonymous Bells Hells had to pull to get help for Laudna, and the number of people who seem genuinely surprised when FCG offers them healing out of kindness. Most people probably rely on home remedies.)
** which hasn’t been made obvious yet but it will on the next page. You can see some suggestion of the eponymous scarlet on Imogen’s neck in the bottom left panel though.
So a long time and several fandoms ago a friend used to give me a hard time about my over-reliance on melodramatic Victorian novel disease as a plot device (specifically, targeting the heroine — or her best beloved — with it) so I imposed a rule on myself that I could only deploy it once per fandom (with the assumption that I’d have a different audience every time) and it had to drive the story forward. And friends, the time has come.
But I mean, come on. I couldn’t hang that gun on the wall and not have it go off and hit one of them.
This fandom’s enthusiasm for sickfics and whump in general has relaxed my stance a bit though. Before coming here I didn’t realize it was an entire genre and moreover, one that seems to target Imogen almost exclusively. If I had I might have leaned towards the alternative I also considered where Imogen tries futilely to convince an angry mob that obviously Laudna didn’t curse the town with a plague if she has it too. But then they’d be on the run before she had a chance to recover (you know, like after she got resurrected no I’m not still salty about it*** ) which isn’t a very satisfying chapter end. But fear not, this is all reciprocated in a later chapter.
A common thread I’ve noticed in sick Imogen fics though is that Laudna always seems to be much more calm and reassuring about it than she should be, haha. Imogen is the only thing in the world she genuinely cares about and she’s already half convinced that she’s always just a few missteps away from losing her forever. She’d be panicking.
(*** this is a lie. Also you know what else I’m still mad about? That she didn’t get that lil gryphon toy!! She clearly wanted it, she went in looking for a toy because she was feeling vulnerable and childlike and wanted the comfort of something simple intended to make a child happy. (Which is even more clear now since she was in the same regressive emotional state then as she has been recently after Ashton ate the lava shard, which she coped with by making another doll.) Fearne bought it and totally forgot about it. :( We could have had another meat-named doll character this entire time!!!

WIP Wednesday: The Coal Wars Pt. 1
Good WIP Wednesday to all. Today I plan to talk a bit about an important bit of lore from the setting of The Clockwork Boy. I generally don't talk much about worldbuilding for my writing unless prompted because it's not something I spend a lot of time on by itself. I'm usually more comfortable with having whatever happened to make the world and the characters the way that they are be explained together with the plot or the characters themselves.
This one bit though is quite pivotal to explain the status quo of the setting, which I will admit is rather unusual. Hopefully the thing will be fine and comprehensible when reading the whole thing, but for my out of context pals here on tumblr dot com, it may be useful to have some info about The Coal Wars.
Note: This turned out considerably longer than I had thought it would, so I won't even get around to the part that's the most relevant for our story this time around. Stay tuned for the conclusion of this particular bit next week!
The city in which our story takes place used to be part of The Imelian Empire, an expansive maritime empire headed by a hereditary bloodline of emperors and empresses, although it was more uncles and third cousins once removed carrying the line as of late as a problem with infertility had plagued the dynasty for some time.
The City was known as Imil in those days, and as the capital of the imperial core regions, it was in many ways the grandest city mankind had ever seen. At the start of what would be the nation's steam era, industry flourished thanks to bountiful ore and coal deposits in the hills and mountains in the north, while the bountiful plains between the city and the sea fed the city's explosively expanding population.
The invention of steam-powered machinery made the then-Kingdom of Imelia enter what could be constituted a golden age, as the increased efficiency of industry freed up sufficient manpower that Imelia was able to wrest much-contested land along its borders away from its neighbors. By the time those neighbors had become part of Imelia proper, the nation was a kingdom no longer but had proudly proclaimed itself as The Imelian Empire. Satirists of the time liked to make hay about how this was because "there was hardly a drop of kingly blood left in our so-called royals" due to a string of rather opaque successions, but the line of Emperors and Empresses nonetheless enjoyed wide popular support in the imperial core all the same.
The source of Imelia's power as an empire was its breadth of steampowered technology that facilitated production and logistic on a level hitherto thought impossible. Fast, durable ships allowed the empire to subjugate and keep tabs on smaller nations across the vast seas, as well as shipping the riches of the imperial periphery back to the core with unmatched efficiency.
The Coal Wars, one could argue, started long before any military conflict. If one were to define the start of a war as the point at which it became an inevitability rather than a possibility, the Coal Wars started once the last coal mine in the Imelian hills was closed due to a tunnel collapse in the last yielding tunnel making retrieving what little coal unprofitable. In the public eye, this piece of news registered as little less than a curious piece of trivia, as the vast coal mines of Pelia, the empire's biggest colony had outproduced Imlish mines for about a decade and showed no sign of slowing down.
In the halls of government, though, worry was brewing as Imelian reliance on colonial goods and resources was already at worrying levels as industrial pollution had rendered many farms and logging operations in the imperial core unviable. To further add to these anxieties, the political landscape in Pelia had grown unstable as the sheer number of native-born Pelians in the colony made whispers of emancipation all but inevitable.
Fearing the loss of Pelian coal functionally crippling the empire, Imelia cracked down hard on the Pelian Independence Movement. Unfortunately, this had the effect of further radicalizing the group, leading to an armed mob delivering an ultimatum to then-viceroy Aron Loams demanding a formal declaration of self-emancipation. Loams complied, giving him the sobriquet of "The Traitor Viceroy" in Imelian media and culture.
Voices in the Imelian government called for a swift and immediate war to chastise the wayward colony, but one very notable voice opposed this. Empress Laiane of Imelia had seen her power wane in favor of the Imperial Council over the last decades, but a firm no from her was still enough to silence the voices of all but the most insistent Warhawks. The empress's solution was to send an elite squad from the 3rd Imelian Steampowered Brigade to apprehend Loams for treason and install a loyal viceroy.
Unfortunately, it matters little whether the empress wished to avoid war for ideological or practical reasons, as her actions hastened war all the same. The attempted apprehending of Loams was thwarted by loyalist forces who drove out the Imelian invaders in the first military action of the cascade of wars that were to be named The Coal Wars. In the heat of the fight, Loams and his wife were both killed, but this cold comfort turned out to be anything but.
In their efforts to removing Loams from power, the Imelians had made him into a martyr, and their attempt at installing a loyal viceroy had failed. The people of Pelia, on the urging of the independence faction, elected its first government, whose platform, nicknamed "The Loams Plan," called for mobilization and a sustained war against their former imperial masters.
This, alone, would prove a sizable headache for Imelia as the rocky coasts and well-guarded harbors of Pelia were a tough nut to crack even under ideal circumstances. Unfortunately, Pelia was not the only colony to rise up. Emboldened by the relative weakness of Imelia and the apparent success of Pelian independence, several of Imelia's smaller and less powerful colonies also seized upon the chance. Not all demanded independence, but the vast majority sent either demands for freedom or strongly worded suggestions for more favorable trade and taxation.
Driven into a fervor by their own war propaganda, the Imelian Imperial council formulated a plan to send its armies on a world tour of subjugation, using apropriated resources from the defeated colonies to reinforce supplies, while Imelia's superior navies would blockade Pelia to "soften them up" for a large-scale invasion.
Fortunately for Imelia's former colonies, this plan did not work as intended, as the technologically superior Imelian troops found themselves stuck in quagmire after quagmire as resistance in even minor colonies turned out difficult to entirely uproot thanks to an emphasis on guerilla tactics and exploiting Imelia's poor standing among colonists to sabotage supply lines. Several of the intended "easy targets" dragged on for so long that even the more prosperous colonies ended up as net losses for the invaders.
Growing frustration with the lack of clear victories was only compounded by the news that the Pelian blockade had very little impact on both morale and logistics of the young nation. Granted, there was not a force in the world that could break the blockade by the top-of-the-line Imelian navy, but Pelia had produced more than it used for decades, and the lack of certain Imelian luxuries did little to dampen the fervor of the Pelian people.
As Imelian coal reserves grew perilously low and the smoke of charcoal burners contributed to Imils already considerable smog problems, the decision to invade Pelia despite both logistical and strategic challenges came up in the Imelian Council. Unlike the last time the topic of war with Pelia came up, no strong voices rose to oppose the motion.
During the prosecution of the war, Empress Laiane had died without an heir, which left the Council as an interim ruling body until a sufficiently relevant member of her dynasty could be located. As the Council called for a full-scale invasion of Pelia, it was with a cold certainty that the age of Emperors and Empresses in Imelia was over.

Honestly, White Sky has a stupidly high lore-and-backstory-to-actual-plot ratio: there's pages upon pages of stuff that'll never exist as more than the odd reference or infodump. There's a lot we could go into - the depths of White Sky's alternate world history, the evolution of spacecraft and human habitation in space, the plans for colonization of the outer planets... for now though, we'll focus on the Moon, as it's a major location in the plot and forms much of the setting.
The Moon, or Luna as it's commonly known politics-wise, was first landed on by humans on July 20th, 1969, when the American lunar mission Apollo 11 touched down on the lunar surface. Commander James A. Lovell Jr. left the Lunar Module the following day, and became the first human to set foot on another world. Not wanting to be outdone, the USSR landed General Alexei Leonov on the Moon in February of the following year aboard Soyuz-9L. Thus began the world powers' feverish race to the Moon, a race which saw its fair share of fatalities and casualties. Nevertheless, by 1980, both countries had their first lunar outposts on the Moon - the Soviets had Zvezda, and the US had Moonlab. Gradually, these meagre outposts morphed into fully equipped and inhabited bases: by 1995, at least twelve people permanently occupied the lunar surface at any given time. After the Thermospheric Wars ended in 2002 with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Earth-Luna Treaty Organisation (ELTO) was established to oversee and regulate access to space. This coincided with the rise of other governments and nations as emerging space powers, such as the European Union (ESA), Japan (JAXA) and China (CNSA). Gradually, the Moon's population grew as nations staked their claims to lunar territory. The first precursors to the present-day domed cities were basic cities developed in the late-2010s and early-2020s: distinct from the myriad research complex, these habitats were designed purely for human habitation and tourism. Supported by the forebears of modern mega-corporations, Earth's ultra-wealthy began to invest, travel and build. During times of turmoil on Earth in the mid-21st century, Luna was a growing refuge; a home away from home for thousands of tourists, researchers and workers. Earth's reliance on lunar helium-3 after the oil wars only accelerated this process, and the end result is what we see in the current setting of White Sky: pinpricks of light and warmth covering our satellite in Earth's night sky.
Luna is, of course, heavily regulated. Several cities with a combined population of almost 150,000 would be trivial on Earth. On a world 240,000 miles away and naturally inhospitable to mankind, it's an absolute necessity. A tentative lunar democracy has formed between the lunar city-states, presided over by ELTO, who hold supreme overriding power over all lunar affairs. However, Luna is not without flaws. Tourism is a major draw to the lunar cities, whether it's a billionaire visiting their 'holiday apartment' or a middle-class family's once-in-a-lifetime lunar trip. Critics point to the increasing wealth disparity between Luna's uber-rich, consumerism-centered tourism industry and the struggles the thousands of workers and permanent residents propping it up - some say this is the number one factor in the cities' consistently high crime and corruption rates, while others point to ELTO's increasingly draconian restrictions and defensive measures as the impetus for the Moon's growing underground terrorist network. Whatever the case, it's clear that the Moon is a flashpoint for the future of humanity: will it gain independence from Earth and become the first foothold to an interplanetary civilization? Or will intergovernmental and corporate meddling sink humanity's aspirations while they're still in their infancy?

every day i think about horizon zero dawn and wish i could play it for the first time again. it’s so beautiful and aloy is SO… and the plot is so unhinged but still sensical and lives in my brain constantly like the idea that humanity was completely destroyed by american capitalism and the military industrial complex but it was saved with love and determination PLUS the themes of legacy and inheritance, what we owe to those who came before us, but also aloy’s strength and self-reliance, and also how that’s both her best quality and her fatal flaw, and god have i even talked about the worldbuilding yet it is so fucking cool!!! robot dinosaurs!!! bow and arrows spears cannon launchers face paint !!! now you might look at this giant run on sentence and say “just play it again dork.” and see i would, except i’ve played it so many times that it’s losing meaning. i’m so scared to diminish what this game means to me. anyway i have no idea how to conclude this i’m just having a moment here

Okay so after about 16 pages, I'm finally starting to run down on the Ringposting, so let's go ahead and wrap it all up
The problem I have with The Ring, like most other American horror movies, is that the strength of the idea behind it is weakened by the industry's heavy reliance on gore, shock, and mindless action. It's technically well executed, with good cinematography, passable lighting (i'm still irritated by the blue-green filter over everything), and a decent budget, but I can't help but see the same problems I've had with every other headline horror film in the last twenty years.
The problem is that these movies need to sell, and especially as horror is a smaller, more niche genre, they need to appeal to the widest spread audience they can. Which means, really, they have to balance the dread and the psychological build with the shock and awe of cheap gore shots. Ringu wouldn't sell in the US, because even I found it meandering and slow, and the big payoffs of the film (at least to me) aren't the sort that you'd get pumped up in your seat about, it's the moments that you get to chew over on the drive home.
And it's not like there isn't an audience for that, it's not like US audiences are all brainless and unable to process nuance, but it's that... it doesn't sell as much. The Thing is a classic horror movie, still constantly referenced, and it failed so badly that John Carpenter career nearly blew up. And the problem isn't that it FAILED, but that when a movie costs 15 million dollars and makes 20 million, that's a failure.
Hell, Morbius cost 75 million and made twice that, and it's been universally panned as a bomb.
If you're going to make a movie, it doesn't matter how good it is, how much it endures as a legacy, how seminal or influential, only how much it sells.
Avatar made three fuckin' billion, and it was a cultural blip.
And I'm getting a little far afield complaining about capitalism, but that's the root issue I see about The Ring. And I'm not saying that the Japanese film industry is some sort of paradise where the only standard is whether a movie is good, to be clear. It's just that when I watched the Ring, I felt like it was made by committee. Like they said 'well, we're remaking Ringu, so it needs to be like that, but we need three gore scenes, a romance subplot, the creepy child factor...' and things like that.
And I don't know much about the original novel (and what I do know, I'm not sure I like) but it's not like the Ring draws additional inspiration or scenes from the source material, either.
They cut the psychic stuff basically entirely, which meant they had to rewrite a big chunk of the plot because Ryuji's psychic abilities drove the big reveal, and it also meant that all the stuff with Rachel's kid fell flat. They added a few shock scenes like Rachel pulling the electrode out of her mouth, and-
AND!
The fucking old man!
Sadako's uncle in Ringu felt so good to me because I could feel the guilt and shame radiating off him. He agrees to take Ryuji and Reiko back to the mainland, in the middle of a fuckin' typhoon, because if Sadako wants him dead, he'll make it easy on her. There's a level of pathos around that never gets paid off, and I like that, because it leaves it ambiguous. Does Sadako want him dead? Is she still even able to act in that way, or is the VHS tape the only way she can reach into the world of the living?
And, more importantly, is Sadako even ACTING throughout the movie? Or is the VHS some snapshot of Sadako frozen in time, an imprint of her power without any intention or agency? Is that why despite finding Sadako's body and putting her to rest properly, the curse lives on? Or is it just not enough? Is her death in the well even RELATED to the video? Because most of the video has nothing to do with her death, it's having to do with the suicide of her mother.
And before we even get into the character of Richard, Samara's father, it's important to note that The Ring implies that Samara's doing all this because she's a fucked up evil kid who likes killing.
But Richard! Oh, fuck, Richard, what a poorly used character. I'm not honestly even sure what he does in the movie! He's not even a source of information! I guess he does have that one good line, "What is it with reporters? You take one person's tragedy and force the world to experience it, spread it like sickness" but he's-
He's not even the one who kills Samara
I don't know why they chose to make ANNA the one who kills Samara. In Ringu, it's the doctor she was having an affair with, who's also implied to be Sadako's father.
Here, Richard is directly responsible for a lot of the abuse, but they backed away from having him be the one to do it? I could easily see the decision being to have Anna jump and kill herself, and have Richard kill Samara as some sort of 'you drove your mother to death and I'm going to end this before you do the same to me' plot, even without calling it the grief of losing his wife (because again, no one in this movie likes each other, and if you told me he killed Samara because of how much he loved his wife I'd laugh in your fuckin' face).
And I'm not saying that he SHOULD have, but that it really would make much more sense for him to exist if he DID.
As it is, he's mostly just another cheap thrill of attacking Rachel (but also why does he do that? he's not interested in stopping her, or killing her, he just brains her with a power strip for shits and giggles?) and then goes upstairs and fries himself in the bath.
And like, why does he kill himself? He knows about the tape! He should know that he's safe! But he kills himself as some sort of escape, but I have no idea from what.
And again, I know why they put it in the movie, it's because they needed a shock moment and something to raise the tension by going 'see? the little girl is eeeeevil' but it doesn't work!
And again again, by this point in the movie there's SUPPOSED TO be tension around the nearing deadline for Rachel's death, but it's just not used at all, so they need something else to frighten you!
Anyway.
The well scene.
In Ringu it's so deliberate. It's so important, that they've come here with the intention and purpose of going in and getting Sadako. It's important, that they spend hours and hours working to try and drain the well enough to find her remains. It's so important, that as the time begins to run down and Reiko is hauling bucket after bucket of water up, that she's beginning to despair and her strength is failing.
And it's so, so important that when she goes down into the water and Ryuji is the one hauling the buckets up, that she finds Sadako's corpse and lifts it gently from the water, and cradles it to her.
I'll never stop being mad about the way the Ring handles it.
When Samara's body rises out of the water, it's a normal looking human child. That's important. She's not decayed, she's not bloated, she doesn't look like any of her victims, or even how she looks at the end of the movie. She looks like she could be sleeping. And when Rachel lifts her out of the water, the really bad special effect plays out where her flesh melts away to show a skeleton...
and Rachel drops her.
And partially what makes me so mad is that in Ringu, as Reiko lifts Sadako's body out, it's just her head out of the water, with the long stringy black hair, and as Reiko touches it, the hair slides away to show the skull flooded with green brackish water, draining away through the empty eye sockets.
And then she holds it close.
I will die fucking mad about this.
And part of the reason why I'm furious about it is that it's boring. It's uninteresting, especially with the unintentional way Rachel enters the well, but it's also like... there's no compassion. There's no sympathy for the monster. It's the chalice scene from Indiana jones but everyone is too tired to react.
And like, that compassion is so important, and there's just none of it in the Ring. There's no compassion, no love, no respect between ANY of the characters in the Ring. Rachel is kind of explicitly shown to be a bad mom.
Yeah, we need to talk about that.
In Ringu, Reiko's relationship with her son is strained because she's a single mother, but she's not a bad mother. She cooks dinner for her son when she's going to be gone. She relies on him to be a certain level of self-sufficient, but it wasn't like he was forced to do everything himself. She's distant and she relies on her father to help take care of him, but it's clear that she's still present in his life as much as possible.
Fuckin' Rachel is introduced being late to picking up her son, and kind of explicitly is called out as being a bad parent a lot through the movie. She sits in her room with the door closed while her son makes himself lunch and goes to school. She ignores the teacher's concerns about her son, and the way her son appears to be expressing his grief. She keeps basically going 'yeah Aidan takes care of himself, isn't that great' and not putting the pieces together that he's so self-sufficient because she's entirely unreliable. And like, the way she acts around him... it's so weird and off-putting and not in the way they intend. They make him a strange little kid, with this intense stare and weird way of speaking, but it doesn't read as like, an autistic kid, or a psychic kid. It reads like a stranger.
Throughout the movie, he never calls her mom. He always calls her Rachel. And like, yeah, again, it's supposed to be a weird-kid-thing, but it doesn't feel that way, especially given how self-sufficient he has to be, and how little the two of them interact. It feels like she's not his mom. It feels like a kid you just adopted, who doesn't feel comfortable around you yet. It feels like he says 'Rachel' and not 'mom' or 'mother' or anything, because he doesn't know who she is.
And with the choice to make Samara a little girl and not a grown woman, it just hits so much harder because we see Samara being abused, and the way she's treated, and I don't think we're supposed to draw comparisons between her and Rachel's son, at least not in the way I did.
Rachel neglects her son. She doesn't make him sleep in a barn or whatever, but it's hard not to be like, damn, the only thing you praise your son for is NOT BEING A KID. You like him because he's not a burden on you, and if he was, I wouldn't be fuckin' surprised if you also started putting him in mental health hospitals or hell, even just getting rid of him.
And like, Noah in the Ring, as Rachel's ex-boyfriend, explicitly says that he ran out on the two of them because he thought he'd be a shitty father. He ALSO has a line about how he doesn't want anyone else to be the kid's father, either, in some weird sort of possessive jealousy about Rachel. And like, I said it before, but you could see him as a foil to Anna as someone who didn't want a child and fled when he ended up with one, as opposed to Anna who so desperately wanted one and worked so hard between fertility treatments and miscarriages and eventually adoption.
I think a lot of parallels I'm drawing between characters in the Ring aren't intentional.
Anyway, I don't think I can say things like 'the Ring doesn't understand what made Ringu so good' because I'm not sure I understand what makes Ringu so good. I'm not sure that there's some deep overarching theme that the entire story is working towards. I know it differs pretty significantly from the novel, and so there's always going to be a level of disconnect between the plot and the beats. Like, Reiko's character was a guy (and thus, not divorced from Ryuji) in the novel. The way people die in the novel is from some mutated smallpox virus that makes a tumor grow in your heart over seven days exactly. There's a lot of stuff where I'm like... I don't think I'm going to waste my time reading the book.
But whatever the director and scriptwriter did with Ringu, it worked, and it worked well. There's a lot to chew on in ways that feel good, and that don't feel like there's an obvious answer. I saw someone talking about the ending of Ringu as heroic and I was like 'what the fuuuuuuuuck' before I realized that they interpreted the final phone call as Reiko explaining everything to her father
And thus, her father had agreed to watch the video to save her son, to sacrifice himself for his family.
Which is like! Yeah, that's a possible read! And I like the fact that you could read it that way! I don't think I believe it, but that's okay.
And that level of ambiguity hits, where the Ring's 'who are we going to show the video to' ambiguity falls flat because whoever Rachel gives it to, they're not anyone we care about. She's going to be murdering some rando, and it's not some major shift in who she's been the entire movie to decide to murder some rando. I'm perfectly willing to believe that Rachel from the beginning of the movie would condemn someone else to die if it was convenient for her. She's too selfish and isolated.
I said Ringu was unpolished, and I think it's true, because there's a lot I could suggest to clean up, but at the end of the day, the movie feels good to watch. I was drawn in by the plot and the characters and the suspense and the payoff. Even the parts where I think it started to drag, no it didn't, because the experience I had thinking about the movie brought me back around to argue in favor of it. Yeah, the well sequence in Ringu is too long, and it's too slow, and it could have been cut down and tightened up, and I'm glad they didn't because it's perfect.
The more I think about the Ring, the more irritated I get with it.
I think we should stop remaking foreign movies.
