Santillana del Mar, Spain (No. 4)
This village has its origin in the High Middle Ages, around the abbey of Santa Juliana. Medieval human bones have been recovered in the necropolis of this town. The date of foundation of the monastery is not known. Legendarily it is attributed to monks of the eighth or ninth century who took the relics of St. Juliana of Bithynia, martyred in Turkey, to this place, raising a monastery in a place called Planes.Currently the foundation of the monastery is associated with the repopulating current promoted by the successors of Alfonso I. From the year 980 the monastery was consolidated, thanks to the continuous donations of the faithful and to be a place of passage of a branch of the Camino de Santiago. It was establishing a territorial and jurisdictional domain, especially in the area known as Merindad de las Asturias de Santillana, of which it was almost certainly the capital. This merindad was one of the thirteen that then formed the kingdom of Castile. A document from that time says of the village that:
... it governs by it all this country from the Aya de Oton, to the Corba de Nogales, at a distance of two leagues from Aguilar acia Castilla, and on the west to Puerto de Santiuste in the confines of the Asturias of Oviedo, term that comprises 23 leagues of longitude and 18 of latitude, and in it the town of Santander and places adjacent to it.
