Dark Tales of Whimsy follows the pattern of 4 short stories around a theme, this time with twists on fairy tales and myths. Reimaginings can be a rough genre, because it’s so saturated with generations…

Hi hi, recently finished Vixen & The Fox. Loved it! Favorite kolvina fic by far. I was wondering, who is everyone in the skulk? By my count, it's:

Kol & Davina (obviously), Freya & Vincent (Elders), Monique, Abby & Monique (other Harvest girls), Bonnie, Kaleb, Kai, Nora, Beau, Jo, Stephanie, Amy, Jessica, Anna-Marie (The new Harvest Girls who Hope befriended/were being inducted into the Skulk last we heard of them), Lizzie, Josie, Apollo, Ophelia, Rameses, Radzim, Reto, Regulus, Hope, Constance, Faith, Amity, Grace, Nik, Fionna, Alizee, Verene, Ragnar, Cole, Etienne, Remy, Louis, Armel, Bertrand, Isak, Nathanael, Fernand, Daniele, Davina, Kolby, Briar, Palash (assuming they join Vincent's coven and not Ivy's), of course Kol and Davina have four children but I don't know if they count (they do to me because they would've been accepted had they been raised with them), which brings the number to fifty three including the Kits

Also: Would the Skulk have accepted any new members after the 'deaths' of Kol and Davina?

So, yes, all of the Skulk does include those particular children through familial connections. But there are a few extras who I don't think would occur to anyone to count.

When Vincent and Ivy married, Ivy joined Vincent's coven; we're going to go with the old tradition of a more familial structure where the women go with their husband's families here given the Skulk is founded on Old Traditions. So, Vincent's marriage did bring Ivy into the fold.

When Eitenne married Naltalka, Naltalka joined the Skulk too. Which is sort of an indication for how the Skulk was going to work, but I don't have a lot of the female characters married at this time to other witches, so I can't really show that.

When Hope married/mated Theo, because he's not a witch her children; Verity and Felicity; are a part of the Skulk, but also, given Theo's not really part of the Beacon Hill's Pack, he just sort of joined the Crescent Moon Pack, and they stayed in the Mikaelson sphere of control.

Now, when Grace marries, part of why her wedding is to be made a big deal, is because Rafael is a part of the Beacon Hill's Pack, and her wolf side will go to the Beacon Hill's Pack with Rafael, however, because she isn't leaving the Skulk or her coven, when/if she has children, they'll join the Skulk to learn.

The Skulk also took in the other Harvest Girls, later in their lives. Stephanie, Jessica, Anna-Marie and Amy all had a claim to be in the Skulk given the Skulk had already served as a safe haven for Monique, Cassie and Abigail.

Now, if one of the girls marries a witch, then more than likely she'll go to her husband's coven, whereas when one of the boys marries a witch, they'll more than likely bring a wife into the Skulk. It's a little bit different for the wolves of the Skulk, or marrying a 'mortal' but that's the basic gist given the Skulk is founded on Old Magic. It's not to say the girls are cut off entirely from the Skulk if they leave when they get married, it's just saying, in theory, that's how it's going to work.

As for Kol and Davina and their children, they technically are still a part of the Skulk, but they are effectively severed, magically, from the Skulk due to being in the Armillary Sphere. Runa does not connect with the Skulk with any sort of ease, and can't recognize the bonds as part of her coven, though she knows that's her coven. The magic she's grown up using and the world she's grown up in is drastically different from the Skulk's, and thus, her magic doesn't work how normal witch's magic would normally work.

365 Day Movie Challenge (2019) - #56: It Happened at the Inn (aka Goupi mains rouges) (1943) - dir. Jacques Becker

I am always intrigued by French films made during the Nazi occupation of World War II, and It Happened at Inn, one of the earliest features by Jacques Becker, has many thought-provoking qualities to offer its viewers. Becker, who would later go on to direct such titles as Casque d’Or (1952), Touchez Pas au Grisbi (1954) and Le Trou (1960), combines crime and comedy in Inn (originally titled Goupi Mains Rouges, or “Goupi Red-Hands”) to tell the story of the Goupis, a close-knit clan that is rocked by a series of inexplicable events, including theft, murder and attempted murder. Fernand Ledoux plays Red-Hands, the “black sheep” uncle who vows to get to the bottom of the mysteries plaguing his family. Cinematographer Jean Bourgoin, who later photographed the back-to-back Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winners Mon Oncle (1958) and Black Orpheus (1959), displays a keen eye with his black-and-white images in Becker’s film, while the performances by Ledoux, Robert Le Vigan (a notorious collaborator and anti-Semite), Albert Rémy (perhaps best remembered as Antoine Doinel’s father in Truffaut’s The 400 Blows), Maurice Schutz and Germaine Kerjean are strong as well. Because New York’s Museum of Modern Art goes out of its way to screen films like It Happened at the Inn, I am better able to enrich my knowledge of world cinema.

Pour le contexte, avant qu'Edmond ne débute sa vengeance, il s'est fait passé pour un banquier anglais et à aider la famille Morrel à rembourser ses dettes quand ils étaient encore à Marseille. Morrel étant le nom de l'armateur du Pharaon, le bateau sur lequel travaillait Dantès et duquel il allait devenir le capitaine.

Après quelques temps, ils s'en sont bien remis et le comte viens leur rendre visite (en tant que comte cette fois) comme il l'avait promis à Maximilien lors du déjeuner chez le Vicomte Albert de Morcerf (fils de Fernand Mondego/De Morcerf) quelques semaines plus tôt.

Julie et Maximilien Morrel, les enfants de l'armateur expriment leur reconnaissance envers cet anglais qui a changé leur vie sans savoir que c'est en fait le comte/Edmond lui-même qui en est à l'origine.

Le comte tente de cacher ses émotions de joie et de bonheur devant tant de reconnaissance, en essayant evidemment de ne pas se faire démasquer.

If only one thing has brought me joy in the last few weeks, it began when the matriarchs at Unist’ot’en burned the Canadian flag and declared reconciliation is dead. Like wildfire, it swept through the hearts of youth across the territories. Reconciliation was a distraction, a way for them to dangle a carrot in front of us and trick us into behaving. Do we not have a right to the land stolen from our ancestors? It’s time to shut everything the fuck down!

Tawinikay (aka Southern Wind Woman)

The toxic cargo carried in Canadian pipelines, whether it be tar sands oil or fracked liquid natural gas (LNG), is, according to all serious climate scientists, a major, perhaps even decisive contribution to global warming, i.e. ecological catastrophe.   Meant to fuel industrial expansion, the pipelines have themselves become fuel for revolt. Designed to move these dirty fossil fuels from one location to another, they are a crucial element in normalizing the dubious paradise of unlimited growth in awe of which all obedient consumer/citizens are supposed to genuflect. In what the colonial mapmakers have called British Columbia (BC), resource extraction has always been the name of the game. However, the emergence in February of this year of a widespread oppositional network ranging from “land back” Indigenous warriors to elder traditionalists and from Extinction Rebellion activists to anarchist insurrectionaries was heartening. Railways, highways and ferries were blockaded, provincial legislatures, government administrative offices, banks and corporate headquarters were occupied. The catalyst for this rebellion was a widespread Indigenous uprising that refused the illusory promises of reconciliation. Together, these rebel forces disrupted business as usual in solidarity with the Unist’ot’en Big Frog clan of the Wet’suwet’en tribal house.

       ​As objective chance would have it, the primary Indigenous land defense camp is situated not far from the same Hazelton, B.C. area to which surrealist Kurt Seligmann and his wife Arlette had journeyed in 1938. During that time, they visited Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en villages, marveled at the imaginative power of the totem poles and ceremonial objects, made field notes, shot 16mm film, collected stories and recorded mythic histories. Now, in 2020, growing numbers of these same Indigenous peoples have been threatening to bring the Canadian economy to a grinding halt. Unwilling to be bought off by corporate petrodollars or mollified by a legal system that has never done anything but pacify, brutalize, or betray them in the process of stealing their land, Indigenous peoples passionately fought back against the forces of colonial law and order in a radical whirlwind of willful disobedience and social disruption. One action built upon another in creating a rolling momentum that seemed unstoppable. When one railroad blockade would be busted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), another would spring up in its place elsewhere extending the frontlines of the battle all across the continent. Then the debilitating Covid-19 virus arrived to compound the damage that had previously been done to the capitalist economy by the incendiary virus of revolt. The resistance of these Indigenous communities against the pipelines concerns all of us, worldwide, since they are on the front lines of the struggle to prevent cataclysmic climate change.

       ​In the future, a key question will be whether Canadian authorities can successfully put the genie of Indigenous rebellion back in the colonial bottle of “reconciliation”. As surrealists, we hope they will not, and we stand in solidarity with the unreconciled insurgent spirit of defiant Indigenous resistance. A new reality is to be invented and lived instead of the one that today as yesterday imposes its environmental miserabilism and its colonialist and racist hierarchies.  As surrealists, we honor our historical affinity with the Kwakwaka’wakw Peace Dance headdress that for so long had occupied a place of reverence in André Breton’s study during his lifetime before being ceremoniously returned in 2003 to Alert Bay on Cormorant Island by his daughter, Aube Elléouet, in keeping with her father’s wishes.
