Copenhagen 2001 - The interval act and other performances

Only two musical extras this year - first last year's winners, The Olsen Brothers kick things off with a reprise of 2000's winning song Fly on the Wings of Love, segueing neatly into their new song Walk Right Back accompanied by four be-tartaned female pipers.

The opening song by last year's winner has been done before, but in 2001 it feels as if this performance establishes it firmly in the schedule. It gets the crowd on their feet and cheering right from the off. The Danes' warmth and genuine enthusiasm for their winners is palpable, and the Olsen's seem to be one the only bands of the evening who actually enjoyed the experience of standing in front of all those people. They may not have had the nervousness of competing for their country this year, but it is a homecoming to celebrate.

Befitting a stadium, the interval has a big name. Possibly Denmark's hottest pop export up to 2001, Aqua. They perform a medley of their biggest hits in hyperactive, irreverent style and do truly light up those moments while the EBU get to work verifying the votes. They have all the pyro, all the effects and their stage gear does actually fill the stage.

Far from static, singers Lene Nystrøm and René Dif are everywhere around the stage, bouncing upstage, downstage, left and right. Lene does kick off Barbie Girl with a heartfelt 'fuck off Ken' and finishes by telling him he's a 'dirty bastard', and she's not wrong. The band and record label were still in legal dispute with Mattel over the song at the time.

That's not only the swearing of the evening as in one of the short ad breaks during the main competition sequence, the hosts perform a short skit (with rhyming of course) in which Søren fumbles the 'trophy' dropping it and smashing it into pieces. 'Shit' he says, understandably. Luckily it's only a prop and Natasja is keeping the real one safe.

All this swearing led to the BBC in the UK having to make two apologies. One to the public for swearing going out on live TV and one to host broadcaster DR for Terry Wogan repeatedly insulting the hosts for their looks and rhyming. Not an enlightening evening.

I have actually made a weird mix of musicians in my discussions on those that are bad at their albums. I mean, I'm basically making a club of old crooner, old rockers and many Eurodancers. However, the latter could give the other two a piece of advice, i.e. they released a lot of singles and strung them together for their LPs. Thus, they did what I joked in my previous post – the best-ofs with some bonus tracks. Aqua, for instance, recorded the tune on the link for their debut, but the piece does veer too much into a fake exotica vibe without noticing why the original genre works. Then again, where else could they go? They set a strange identity as a group and they did try to confront with one of their hits, yet the prominence of their biggest hits caused them to become a punchline.

Car Herrera de Kuri reconoce tradiciones, gastronomía y artesanías de Amealco

En la Casa del Adulto Mayor  se realizó una muestra gastronómica y artesanal, con la finalidad de dar a conocer, difundir y gestionar a los pequeños emprendedores. Con el objetivo de promover las tradiciones mexicanas y de cada región de Querétaro, la Presidenta del Patronato del Sistema Estatal DIF, Sra. Car Herrera de Kuri, acompañó a la Presidenta del Sistema Municipal DIF de Amealco, Anel López Ruiz, en la inauguración del Taller de Catrinas; así como también recorrieron la Muestra Gastronómica y Artesanal, organizada por mujeres de esta demarcación. Previo a este encuentro, la Sra. Car Herrera de Kuri y las autoridades municipales efectuaron un recorrido para conocer las instalaciones que alberga el Sistema Municipal DIF y los espacios donde se atiende directamente a la población vulnerable.

Posteriormente, en la Casa de Día del Adulto Mayor, durante el evento de inauguración,  la Presidenta del SEDIF señaló que Amealco es uno de los lugares donde se mantienen vivas las costumbres que ponen a nuestro estado en el foco nacional, como la conocida muñeca Lele que ha sido definida como un pedacito de Querétaro en el mundo. “Aquí nacen gran parte de nuestras raíces. Amealco se ha convertido en la fuerza del estado en cuanto a tradiciones y referentes que nos recuerdan a diario de dónde venimos; espero disfruten este evento que está hecho para preservar parte de las tradiciones mexicanas y que nutren los sabores, colores y la historia detrás de cada artesanía que producen nuestras manos queretanas”, dijo la Sra. Car Herrera de Kuri.

Destacó además que se tiene una lengua materna muy importante que debemos resguardar como un tesoro muy preciado. “Recuerden que sus tradiciones se pueden convertir en el sustento de sus familias, ahí el valor y la importancia de resguardarlas y aprender de ellas, porque pueden ser la forma en la que salgan adelante”, aseguró. En su oportunidad, la Sra. Anel López Ruiz, Presidenta del Patronato del Sistema Municipal DIF, enfatizó que en esta muestra gastronómica y artesanal está plasmado el trabajo de mujeres líderes, ejemplo de fortaleza y emprendimiento. “Gracias por estar aquí de todo corazón, por su disposición, compromiso, y muestra de  calidad humana para conocer la gran riqueza cultural de la cual nos sentimos muy orgullosos los amealcenses. Esperemos que esta muestra sea solo el inicio de nuevos lazos de amistad, proyectos de trabajo y unión entre los emprendedores de Amealco y la entidad”, refirió. 

Finalmente, se escuchó el testimonio de la artesana Silvia Pascual quien agradeció el esfuerzo para dar a conocer lo que las mujeres otomíes de Amealco producen con las manos, como muñecas, ropa y gastronomía. Al final del evento protocolario, se llevó a cabo el saludo a los cuatro puntos cardinales con humo de copal, como muestra de agradecimiento y permiso para poder ser parte de sus tradiciones y artesanías. Cabe mencionar que esta actividad también tuvo la finalidad de dar a conocer, difundir y gestionar que los pequeños emprendedores crezcan en tan dedicada labor como lo son las artesanías. En esta visita estuvieron presentes el Presidente Municipal de Amealco, René Mejía Montoya, la Coordinadora Estatal de Desarrollo Municipal de Amealco, Gabriela Castro Jasso; así como familiares de las autoridades, adultos mayores y artesanos de la localidad.
