Dear both, We went to see Tristana last night. Invitees: Jean Gabin, Coco Chanel… and Salvador Dalí, who came in with his moustache, Gala, and a very pretty girl. Tout Paris was there. Silberman, Lary, Novais, and Jean-Claude too… The Barcelona copy was bad; you can see everything much better now and the sound is perfect. The dubbing we were concerned about was fine after the first five minutes. Rey was well dubbed. The audience laughed a lot, there was some frightened screaming at Rey’s head, and at the end (the death of Don Lope) there were a lot of ‘Oh, nos’.

Lots of applause at the end. Great excitement and lots of comments.

Gabin: ‘I liked it, but I would have cut the scene with the false leg on the bed’. Everyone says it’s a miracle Gabin came, because he never goes out.

Dalí. A journalist asked him: ‘What do you think of the film, Monsieur Dalí?’ Dalí: ‘Buñuel likes Toledo a lot.’

Jean-Claude and Novais were very happy. They liked it a lot. Everyone is saying it’s Deneuve’s best work. It’s true, she’s amazing. Novais says it’s better than The Milky Way.

Silberman, a bit envious. I liked it better the second time, except the scene with Tristana and Nero and her confession.

But I think the dubbing works well. And that’s what everyone was worried about. Once you get used to it…

In short, it was a success and there was much applause. Old Lotte Eisner from the Cinémathèque hugged me and told me that the film was ‘brilliant, as always’. I don’t think she understood a word.

Well, that’s all for now. I’ll write again from Cannes.

IN THE NAME OF MY DAUGHTER (L’HOMME QU’ON AMAIT TROP 🇫🇷) The true story of a late-seventies murder case, which is well-known in France, is a ready-made classic melodrama.

Catherine Deneuve is calmly ferocious as Renée Le Roux, the elegant widow of a casino owner in Nice who is struggling to keep the business afloat in the face of predatory competition from a mobster (Jean Corso). Her lonely and socially awkward daughter, Agnès (Adèle Haenel), returns home to ask for her inheritance, which is tied up in the casino. There, Agnès gets involved with Maurice Agnelet (Guillaume Canet), an ambitious but unappreciated—and married—local attorney who is her mother’s right-hand man. When Maurice’s drive for power puts him at odds with Renée, he influences Agnès to help him work some behind-the-scenes mischief—and to get hold of her money. When Agnès disappears, Maurice is accused of murder.

The director, André Téchiné, has a keen eye for the Balzacian furies behind the cold formalities of business and the stifling mores of the provincial bourgeoisie. 

The movie’s French title, “The Man They Loved Too Much,” suggests its true focus: Maurice, the Machiavellian outcast who pulls the strings. The story’s tension slackens when the action extends to later years, but by that time a dramatic feast has already been served. In French 🇫🇷.

Françoise Paulette Louise Dorléac was born on March 21, 1942. She was a French actress and model. She was the elder sister of Catherine Deneuve, with whom she starred in the 1967 musical, The Young Girls of Rochefort. Her other films include Philippe de Broca's movie L'homme de Rio, François Truffaut's La peau douce, Roman Polanski's Cul-de-sac and Val Guest's Where the Spies Are.

Dorléac was the daughter of screen actors Maurice Dorléac and Renée Simonot. Slim, fair and blonde, she made her film debut in The Wolves in the Sheepfold (1960), directed by Hervé Bromberger. She went on to appear in The Door Slams (1960) with Dany Saval and her sister Catherine Deneuve. Dorléac had a small role in Tonight or Never (1961) with Anna Karina for director Michel Deville, The Girl with the Golden Eyes (1961) with Marie Laforêt, All the Gold in the World (1961) with Bourvil, and Adorable Liar (1961) from director Deville.

Dorléac was Jean-Pierre Cassel's leading lady in The Dance (1962) and had one of the leads in a TV movie, Les trois chapeaux claques (1962), directed by Jean-Pierre Marchand.

She was reunited with Cassel in Arsène Lupin contre Arsène Lupin (1962) and was one of many names who appeared in Teuf-teuf (1963).

Dorléac leapt to international stardom with the female lead in That Man from Rio (1964) starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and directed by Philippe de Broca. She followed it with The Soft Skin (1964) directed by François Truffaut.

She was in The Gentle Art of Seduction (1964) with Belmondo and Jean-Paul Brialy, with her sister in a support part. Dorléac was one of several French stars in Circle of Love (1964) directed by Roger Vadim, and appeared in a TV show, Les petites demoiselles (1964), directed by Deville and starring De Broca. She also appeared in the comedy films, Arsène Lupin contre Arsène Lupin (1962) opposite Jean-Claude Brialy, and Male Hunt (1964), with Belmondo and her sister.

That Man from Rio and Soft Skin were seen widely internationally and Dorléac received an offer to play the female lead in an expensive Hollywood financed epic, Genghis Khan (1965). She was David Niven's love interest in a spy film at MGM, Where the Spies Are (1966).

Dorléac appeared as the adulterous wife in Roman Polanski's black comedy Cul-de-sac (1966), shot in Britain. She returned to France to star in a TV adaption of the Prosper Mérimée novel Julie de Chaverny ou la Double Méprise (1966) directed by Marchand. Then she joined Gene Kelly and her sister Catherine, who was a cinematic star by this time, in The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), an homage to Hollywood musicals.

Her final film role was the female lead in Billion Dollar Brain (1967) opposite Michael Caine, who played spy Harry Palmer.

Dorléac was on the brink of international stardom when she died on 26 June 1967 in a motor accident. She lost control of a rented Renault 10 and hit a signpost ten kilometres from Nice at the Villeneuve-Loubet exit of the autoroute La Provençale. The car flipped over, and burst into flames. She had been en route to Nice Airport and was afraid of missing her flight. She was seen struggling to get out of the car, but was unable to open the door. Police later identified her body only from the fragment of a cheque book, a diary and her driver's licence.

Catherine Fabienne Dorléac (born 22 October 1943), known professionally as Catherine Deneuve , is a French actress as well as an occasional singer, model and producer, considered one of the best European actresses and the greatest French actress of all time.. She gained recognition for her portrayal of icy, aloof and mysterious beauties for various directors, including Luis Buñuel, François Truffaut and Roman Polanski. In 1985, she succeeded Mireille Mathieu as the official face of Marianne, France's national symbol of liberty. A 14-time César Award nominee, she won for her performances in Truffaut's The Last Metro (1980), for which she also won the David di Donatello for Best Foreign Actress, and Régis Wargnier's Indochine (1992).

Deneuve made her film debut in 1957 and first came to prominence in Jacques Demy's 1964 musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. She went on to star in such films as Repulsion (1965), Donkey Skin (1970), Belle de Jour (1967), Tristana (1970) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967) opposite her sister, the actress Françoise Dorléac. Deneuve was born Catherine Fabienne Dorléac in Paris, the daughter of French stage actors Maurice Dorléac (1901–1979) and Renée Simonot (b. 1911). Deneuve has two sisters, Françoise Dorléac (1942–1967) and Sylvie Dorléac (born 14 December 1946), as well as a maternal half-sister, Danielle, whom their mother had out of wedlock in 1937 with Aimé Clariond, but who was later adopted by Maurice and took his surname. Deneuve was her mother's maiden name, which she chose for her stage name, in order to differentiate herself from her sisters. Deneuve attended Catholic schools .

Deneuve appeared nude in two Playboy pictorials in 1963 and 1965. Her image was used to represent Marianne, the national symbol of France, from 1985 to 1989.[citation needed] As the face of Chanel No. 5 in the late 1970s, she caused sales of the perfume to soar in the United States – so much so that the American press, captivated by her charm, nominated her as the world's most elegant woman. In 1983, American Home Products retained her to represent their cosmetics line and hired world-renowned photographer Richard Avedon to promote its line of Youth Garde cosmetics, for which she famously proclaimed, "Look closely. On 6 November 2019, BBC News reported that Deneuve suffered a mild stroke and was recuperating in a Paris hospital. Despite the health scare, there was no damage to her motor functions. Five weeks later, she was released from the hospital and spent the remainder of 2019 recuperating at her Paris home.
