Leader Maynard points to three theories commonly used to explain mass killings and war atrocities. But all three can be debunked.

The first explanation is what I call the Broken Brains hypothesis. This is the notion that the sadism of torturing innocents or committing genocide makes sense only if the perpetrators have abnormal brains, or even are psychopaths. Experts turned to the Broken Brains theory when trying to understand the Nazis. An array of psychiatrists closely examined and interviewed the Nuremberg war criminals. After one of the top Nazi perpetrators, Robert Ley, hanged himself while awaiting trial, his brain was preserved, shipped by air mail to the United States, and studied by neuropathologists, who found that he had brain damage, “a longstanding degenerative process of the frontal lobes.”

But as research continued, it became clear that Ley was an outlier, that the architects of the Holocaust likely did not have brain pathologies, and that the Nazis’ genocidal machine had so many people pulling various levers that most of them had to be neurologically normal. This was not a case of a few psychopaths, but rather of millions engaged in what Hannah Arendt famously called “the banality of evil.”

It’s possible that Russia’s Vladimir Putin is an undiagnosed psychopath, but that can’t explain the widespread barbarism throughout the war in Ukraine, especially as the Russian military fills with conscripts, ordinary Russians who have been forced into combat. There might be psychopaths within the world’s military ranks, and psychopaths might be overrepresented in positions of power. But Leader Maynard says researchers agree that those carrying out horrific violence do not, by and large, have different brains from the rest of us.

The second common explanation is what I call the Lord of the Flies hypothesis—the idea that we are all killers by nature, with an innate capacity for cruelty, and that we commit atrocities when we are on war-zone “islands” that are free from constraints and consequences. Once placed into a conflict, any of us could engage in torture.

Yet research from experts such as Rebecca Littman and Elizabeth Levy Paluck shows that most people have a hard time killing other people. Other scholars have argued that in many of the great battles of history, such as Gettysburg, an astonishing number of guns were left loaded and unused—because it’s so psychologically difficult for untrained killers to shoot human beings, even when their own life is at risk. If most people find it difficult to fire a gun at someone else, how could they electrocute them in a hole in the ground, as apparently occurred in the city of Kherson last month?

A third common explanation for mass killings and wartime atrocities is what I call the theory of Coerced Killers—the idea that evil emerges at gunpoint, that we are capable of atrocities when we feel we have no other choice. Some people do engage in horrific violence only in such circumstances, or because they fear retribution against themselves or their families. But the most rigorous analysis of historical mass violence suggests that these cases make up a tiny minority of the overall picture.

If these three explanations don’t explain mass killings generally—or help make sense of what’s happening in Ukraine—then what does? The answer, according to Leader Maynard’s extensive analysis of atrocities, is ideology. By this he does not necessarily mean the grand isms of 20th-century history, but instead simply a set of political beliefs about how the world works, or should work. Mass killings become more likely when a society engaged in warfare produces a coherent narrative about why extreme violence is desirable or at least justified for a grander strategic purpose. Ideology acts as a social glue, ensuring that the architects of the violence, the rank-and-file soldiers who carry it out, and the broader public all tolerate, or even applaud, atrocities.

Crucially, Leader Maynard finds evidence that perpetrators need not be “true believers” or hard-liners who buy into a regime’s ideological mythmaking. Instead, the existence of the ideology and its widespread acceptance in society can provide a sufficient justification for their violence.

Some notes: Noirvember, and as usual I never go full Noir but I did watch mostly Noirs. Some good Noirs, some not so good Noirs, and a few “hmmm, I’m not really convinced these are Noirs” too. Today, July 22nd 2021, marks ten years since the domestic terrorist attacks in Norway that made not only the whole country stand still, but sent shock waves all over Europe. Eight people died as a result of a bombing in central Oslo, and 69 people were murdered on Utøya, an island west of the capital. The attacks have been considered the most terrible in modern Scandinavian history.

Anders Behring Breivik, a Norwegian right-wing extremist fuelled by the anti-immigration and white supremacist conspiracy theories he had read online, decided to take matters into his own hands and put a stop to what he saw as an Islamic takeover of European society (“Eurabia”) and the promotion of “Cultural Marxism”. The enemy in his eyes were the ruling party, who he believed were enabling this change through immigration and multiculturalism as well as the disestablishment of a strong patriarchy. Before carrying out his deeds he had compiled a manifesto, spanning over a thousand pages, of mostly stuff he’d found online but also by well-established right-wing authors. This was e-mailed to many people in power some hour before the bomb, hidden inside a car parked near government buildings in Oslo, went off, alarming many citizens and injuring hundreds.

A bit after five in the afternoon, Breivik arrived at Utøya disguised as a police officer. Utøya is a small island owned and utilised by AUF, the youth offshoot of the Social Democratic Worker’s Party, who were holding their yearly summer camp at the time. Armed with a rifle, Breivik went on a massacre for over an hour before real policemen arrived to arrest him (delayed due to a lack of ways to get to the island), forcing all the summer camp participants to run and hide as their comrades were injured and killed. At least a hundred were physically injured, far more were mentally traumatised by the event. Many of those who died were young, the majority still in their teens.

It’s easy to paint Breivik as a lone madman, an unstable individual who is now safely behind bars at a maximum sentence. But through his manifesto we see his many connections to people and movements all over the world. He describes himself as a conservative nationalist, a fascist and a “counter-jihadist”, and cites authors Bat Ye’or (Gisèle Littman) and Robert B. Spencer, the American Tea Party movement, and blogger Fjordman among others as inspirations. He approves of the Hindu nationalist efforts to expel muslims from India, Geert Wilders of the Dutch right-wing Party for Freedom, and Israel waging war on Palestine. How can he be a sole extremist when are many people sharing his views? How can his massacre be an incident, an anomaly, when he himself claims to have been inspired and radicalised by the writing of others? The attacks cannot be separated from the politics that created them. At the time, the Norwegian political discourse was very centred around immigration, with far-right parties gaining more sympathy and other parties pandering to this by also starting to discuss immigration as a “problem”. When nationalism, xenophobia and islamophobia become ever more widespread and legitimised as a “point of view” in society, the more rampant the extreme utterances become. Many right-wing conspiracy theorists speak of genocide as a last step, where government takeovers in order to stop immigration and deporting those of unwanted ethnicities are first on the agenda. Breivik intended to help this cause by murdering members of the ruling party who he believed were bringing on the downfall of Western society. This should have been a warning, but ten years later fascism is still on the rise all over Europe (and the world!). Some places are close to, if not already at the last, horrific step. One terrorist being locked up does not put an end to this development. But it might not be too late to learn from it.

Scott Caan To Headline & EP ‘Topangaland’ PI Drama From Benjamin Cavell & Jerry Bruckheimer TV In Works At CBS

EXCLUSIVE: Former Hawaii-Five-0 co-lead Scott Caan is returning to CBS with a new hourlong starring vehicle, which he also is co-writing and executive producing. The network is in development on Topangaland, a drama co-written by Caan and SEAL Team creator Benjamin Cavell, with Caan intended to star. The project hails from Jerry Bruckheimer Television and CBS Studios, where the company is based.

In Topangaland, a laid-back ex-cop (Caan) works for his legendary father’s private detective agency, solving cases that take him from Malibu mansions to Topanga hippie communes to Venice back alleys and everywhere in between — all while navigating a thorny relationship with his dad and the rest of his unconventional family.

The project stems from conversations Caan had with JBTV about developing a show together. The company connected him with Cavell through Cavell’s overall deal at CBS Studios, and the two came up with the characters at the center of the ensemble PI drama. (The father character is not being developed for Caan’s real-life father, James Caan.) The project was taken off the market and bought pre-emptively by CBS as the network — and its sister studio — had been looking to bring Caan back on the air following his Golden Globe-nominated run as Danno in CBS/CBS Studios’ Hawaii-Five-0.

Caan and Cavell — who is intended to serve as showrunner — executive produce with Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed for Jerry Bruckheimer Television.

Cavell is the creator and executive producer of CBS Studios’ SEAL Team, which is moving from CBS to Paramount+ for its upcoming fifth season. He also co-created the CBS Studios-produced Stephen King limited series adaptation The Stand, served as an executive producer on Justified, and co-executive producer on Homeland and Sneaky Pete. He is repped by CAA and The Shuman Company.

Caan, who is coming off a 10-season stint on Hawaii Five-0, is repped by ICM Partners, Stacy O’Neil at Linden Entertainment and attorneys Robert Offer & Shelby Weiser.

I really enjoy his photographic collages. His ability to give an image a completely different impression by cutting it up and piecing it back together is admirable.
