Keep Portland Weird
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve visited Portland before, on a road trip with my family & close family friends. But unfortunately, can’t really remember too much about those trips. So when Ced relocated to Washington for work & extended an open invitation to visit him, Hagel and I decided to go together. It was kind of a last minute trip; squeezed in between my work days. I got off work on Tuesday morning, showered & went straight to the airport for an early morning flight.

Tried to sleep on the plane, but barely did. Landed in Portland & grabbed some coffee while waiting for Ced & Hagel to pick me up. I had literally gotten off a 3-in-a row, barely got any sleep after my last shift & Ced had the brilliant idea of going hiking for our first activity. GG me haha. He message some other friends who lived nearby, and we waited at a coffeeshop for them.

Our first hike was Multnomah Falls. It hadn’t rained recently, so the waterfalls weren’t as strong and I was a little… underwhelmed haha. It was still a great hike though, especially since we arrived around golden hour. We attempted to make it to the top of the waterfalls, huffing & puffing along… until we realised that a) the sun would set before we reached the top, b) none of us had any flashlights and c) we were freezing.

Grabbed dinner at one of Portland’s hole-in-the-walls: Pok Pok. Pok Pok is a Thai restaurant known for their famous chicken wings: pok pok chicken (no surprise there lol). The restaurant reminded me of a carenderia you’d find in the Philippines, and surrounded by fellow AUP alumni and their FOB English and jokes, it kinda felt a little bit like home. Grabbed dessert at Blue Star Donuts, but unfortunately, a lot of their flavours had already sold out for the day. I’ll definitely need to come back again so I can try the ones I’ve been eying from their menu online. The night was still young, so after many failed attempts to find an escape room, we settled for a bowling alley & an arcade.

The next day, Ced, Hagel & I woke up early to cross the border into Washington, to visit Panther Creek Falls. Sabi ni Ced “Madali lang ung hike! Malapit lang sa parking lot.” Note to self: never listen to Ced when he says a hike is “easy.” He led us away from the trail, making his own through the muddy ground & tall trees. We slipped and slid, trying to follow his tracks and finally ended up at the base of the waterfall. It was gorgeous and well worth the trek it took to get there.

We didn’t even eat lunch, just stopped by a gas station to grab snacks before driving to our next destination: Rowena Crest Viewpoint. From an outlook, the road below us formed a “U” shape. When we crossed the road to the opposite outlook, we were rewarded with views of mountains, water, and land blending seamlessly. We drove back to the city afterwards, singing along at the top of our lungs to Moira and Ben&Ben, exchanging hugots and spiritual insights in between. It was a weird mix of conversation, but one that flowed effortlessly.

Dinner was at Luc Lac, a Vietnamese kitchen. The food there was really good, also. Stopped by Voodoo Donut for dessert, another one of the “Must See” dessert shops in Portland. But honestly, I was a little underwhelmed; the flavours didn’t seem to be anything I hadn’t tasted before.

We walked downtown for a bit and stopped by a little jazz bar. There was a live band on the stage, and couples dancing. I’ve always wanted to experience a jazz bar like the one from La La Land, and this is the closest I’ve gotten. The air was energetic, the music lively, the passion evident on the musicians playing. We ended up taking an Uber back to where Ced had parked & our drive told us na sayang it’s not Friday coz on Fridays, he dresses up as a drag queen. #KeepPortlandWeird amiright hahaha.

The next day, we kinda slept in a little before heading out for brunch. Stopped by Powell’s City of Books, the largest bookstore in Portland. Hung out at Ace Hotel, mostly because of their vintage photo booth.

Then Ced took us to take a tram to the Oregon Health & Science University, one of the best hospitals in the state that boasted great views.

Stopped by Muji (a must for me, because there’s no Muji near me hehe) and got ice cream before going back to Ced’s apartment. I packed my things & they took me to the airport soon afterward. Ced was going back to work that night, I was flying out because I had work the next day & Hagel was taking a bus to Seattle in the morning. It was a quick & very busy getaway, but well worth the laughter and company.
Note:
Since all travel is pretty much cancelled for 2020, I have time to catch up on all my travel posts from last year hehe. 2019 was a pretty busy travel year for me, so it’s nice to be able to finally document it all.

“Rowena Crest, Columbia Gorge, Oregon, Infrared, July 2022” ©2022 Gary L. Quay I was a bit surprised by how prominent the grain is. It's a rather crunchy picutre, and highly vignetted. The efect is a bit disturbing, but that's infrared for you.
