Sometimes I randomly remember my favourite Royal Road comment on Curse Words, in which this guy reads chapter 1 of book 1 and is incensed beyond all reason that the protagonist happens to be slightly below average male height.

I realize I could have chosen a simpler idea only today lmao.
Anyway- Kirbytober Day 7: Headcanon
In my lil headcanon, I like to think that after King Dedede shot Kirby out of the castles vines to go fight Queen Sectonia, Dedede DOES still fight Shadow Dedede while Kirby deals with the first phase of Dreamstalk Sectonia.
This is all assuming that Kirby doesn't beat it in like 2 minutes and Sectonia puts up a decent fight.
Cos in that time Dedede has to fight Shadow Dedede- smash the mirror (This is mostly a story thing for me lmao), escape the castle and also find Taranza and persuade him to help deal with Sectonia once and for all...
I read a story on AO3 where the focus was Dedede talking to Taranza after he got blasted off the balcony. I'll try to link it later if I find it, but I head canon that happening here too.
As for Dark Meta Knight... I let him fester in the mirror still, but with the mirror smashed, he's stuck there. The Mirror shards get scattered so this can't happen again, but it would be such a shame for someone to try and piece back the mirror, or even find ONE mirror shard for it to corrupt them next... terrifying!
Only thing that confuses me is the whole... mirror in the mirror stuff.
...My alternate headcanon I could have gone with is simply Sectonia is still clinging onto life in limbo where Morpho Knight calls home. Yeah that would have been 10x easier than this lmao.

It is done.
My psychological sci-fi horror comedy novella is done. Psychopunk: The Jellyfish Exorcist is ready for you to devour.
Please do consider leaving a comment, a favorite, a follow, and a rating on Royal Road! It helps me immensely as an author, and quite frankly, I deserve to succeed, because my writing is both good and rad.
So if you're the kind of person who enjoys aquatic cyberpunk with Dark Crystal vibes, give this one a shot. You won't be disappointed.

Adversarial Reading
I think my least favorite type of reader is the reader who thinks I'm trying to get something over on them. They're watching out for my tricks, and they want to call me on my bullshit.
I think it would be more tolerable if they weren't wrong so often. The comments they leave make assumptions about where the plot is going or what my writing process is, and because adversarial readers cannot read my mind, they often just totally blow it.
"The author only had X happen so that Y could happen"
No, I had X happen because that's my understanding of the character, or because it was thematically appropriate, or because there are things going on in the background that you're ignorant of. And you know what, Y isn't going to happen! It's just not that kind of story! So you're wrong on both counts.
"Character X is acting really ooc right now to move the plot along"
No, she's acting different from how she normally acts because a character is not a monolith with a single personality trait. She's acting like that because she had a chance to rest for the first time in the entire novel, because this is the first time someone has treated her like she's not a piece on a chess board, because she's hit her breaking point.
"Character X really should have done Y, is he stupid?"
First, Y is impossible per the rules the story has set up. It's explicitly called out in a line you missed three chapters back. Second, X does not have access to all the same information that you have, and he does not think like you. His priorities are different from the priorities that you have.
~~~
I try, as a general rule, to be empathic.
I think a lot of adversarial readers have read a lot of shitfic, and when you're reading something from an author who doesn't know what they're doing, it's often correct to come to the conclusion that things are Weird Like That because the author was inexpertly stitching together scenes they had in their head, or because they forgot a detail from earlier, or because something obvious just didn't occur to them. Maybe it's not nice, but I've spoken to a lot of starting authors, and asked questions that have gotten me answers that are ... basically that.
I think it goes beyond brainrot pattern-matching though. I think it's partly a desire to feel smugly superior and treat reading as a game that can be won. There are so few options these days for people to feel powerful and validated, and maybe (wrongly or rightly) explaining that you know all the author's tricks and have fallen for none of them helps with what the Unabomber called the "power process" (briefly, a desire of humans to formulate goals and attain them through non-trivial effort).
Reading isn't like that, or shouldn't be. I'm writing this story and you're reading it, and we're in collaboration with each other. I'm attempting to plant a garden in your mind, and it's not going to work if you're not watering it.
Sometimes, if a reader doesn't understand why a character did something, or complains about something that happened which was explained in the text, I do think this is my fault. As a writer it's my job to make sure that things are explained and foreshadowed and that the subtext is readable. This is very difficult to do when writing for an audience of very different assumptions and levels of reading skill. Sometimes as a writer I have to say "mea culpa, this was not written well enough for you to understand character motivations, the rules of the world, or the subtext that underpins this moment".
If you think that "adversarial reader" might describe you, there are a few things that I ask:
Don't make assumptions about the authorial process.
Don't make assumptions about the author.
It's always better to coach things as questions that are open for comment, rather than statements, e.g. "I don't understand why she would do that" instead of "acting real ooc rn".
It's always better to cite text, which will also help keep you from getting things wrong. ctrl+f is one of the best inventions of the last 100 years.
It's always better to assume the author knows what they're doing, at least at first. Sometimes this is a recipe for getting burned, but is it really so bad to get burned?
Read this book if you like:
Superheroes
Manhwa with regression-style plots, but that try to make it unique.
Snarky protagonists who're actually funny instead of #relatable
Authors who want to tell good stories and respect their audiences
It doesn't matter if you're not into webnovels. I hadn't read a single one before I found this one two weeks ago, and now I'm a convert. This book speedran me through the process, and even if it doesn't for you, you're denying yourself a truly amazing story if you pass it up.
SHE'S SO BACK!
October 2021, I started writing about a bratty necromancer and her dungeon core "husband" as a joke… It's not a joke anymore. So much so, we're giving it the rerelease it deserves!
Cryptmother: Bride of the Dungeon Core
Level seven is a perfectly respectable level for a necromancer, but Graverra Greame wants more.  After a lifetime of being horribly misunderstood by her peers—like it's her fault mage armor looks like that—Graverra glitches into an undiscovered and under-leveled dungeon and is finally presented with a marvelous opportunity to advance; all she has to do is make a pact with the enigmatic and infuriating dungeon core and spend her days in wedded dungeon mistress bliss… But running a dungeon isn’t always easy, between an emotionally stunted dungeon core husband who still won’t swap out his avatar for a human body and some celestial entity for a mother-in-law breathing down their necks, on top of all the usual worries of running your own dungeon… What’s a girl to do? What To Expect - Atypical romance 🖤🤍💜 (still some cringey innuendo though, sorry!) - Girliepop Necromancer FMC - Nonhuman MMC - Dungeon building and domestic spats
Read on Royal Road, Tapas, or Ream
Writeblr Introduction
Just learned what a writeblr intro is so I'm gonna make one before I go to bed lol
I've already done something like this a few days ago but that was when I had no clue what I was doing lmao, so might as well make a more in depth one
About me:
19, she/her, bi
American
I write mostly fantasy and urban fantasy, and honestly i dont think i've ever written a story that was non-fantasy lol
Started writing when I was 10, but it was mostly Warrior Cats fanfiction on Wattpad lol. I went through a writing slump for most of highschool but last year I decided to get back into it since I'm not doing anything else lol
I like to read fantasy and classic lit, also anything with vampires. I also have a soft spot for slowburn romances where the main characters dont kiss until, like, the 4th book heehee
In love with anything gothic, vampire, and wlw 👩‍❤‍💋‍👩
I think one of my more niche interests is any early 2000s fantasy/sci-fi movie with a nu-metal/rock/alternative soundtrack like Queen of the Damned and The Crow. They are just...*chefs kiss*
My current stories:
A Chant for Blood (Formerly known as Account of Calamity)
Account of Calamity is a gothic victorian fantasy about a Grand Marshal, Karliah Helisende, and a blood-drinking fiend, Yorick Gwynplaine, who work together to investigate the mysterious portals that spawn dangerous creatures into the city of Isarnan, all the while Karliah is being haunted by the mysterious ancient temple that watches over her every move.
I'm currently working on the second draft, and I may start looking for beta readers once I'm finished, although I know I'm not far from finished with this novel. I also plan to make it a 4 or 5 book series, and slowly add a slowburn romance.
12/30/24 - Second draft has been finished!!
Looking for beta readers! Look here!
Our Demonic Hearts - The Craven Pact Series #1
Our Demonic Hearts is a urban fantasy about a cambion woman, Ana Kravens, haunted by her past. Taking place in a small Mississippi town, a man she went through a traumatic incident with, Beau Motloe, shows up on her doorstep one day with a deal; help him find his missing mother, and he'll give back the memories she lost during the traumatic incident. Her father, a demonic creature of unknown origin, wants nothing more than the Motloes dead, claiming that they were the very reason his daughter was almost killed 6 years ago. Ana goes against her father's wishes and accepts Beau's deal, suspecting that her father isn't telling the whole truth about that fatal night.
It is completed and available on Wattpad and Royal Road!! It was just a small project I had done for Nanowrimo, and has been edited at least once before being published. However, I plan to make it a trilogy and maybe have some spin-offs. This story is fairly new, but most of the characters are at least 5 years old and I love them very much <3
What I plan for 2024:
Finish the second draft of Account of Calamity and look for beta readers(In the beta reader phase!)
Start the second novel of The Craven Pact Series
Write a short story/novella or two taking place within the Account of Calamity universe. My brain is currently exploding with ideas rn(2 are in the drafting process currently!)
Write a short story about Ana Kraven's mom and how she met Marchosias, Ana's father.
Plan something for Nano?? Idk where I'll be in November lol
I'm interested in following other writers and reading everybody's stories! I would also be interested in a beta read/beta swap ^^
Other sites I'm on:
Wattpad: LillithOfBees
Royal Road: SimonneBethel
Nanowrimo: BeeWitch
18+ Writing discord!!!
New chapter of Ugh Not Again is up! It's live on Tapas, Royalroad and Kindlevella depending on where you like to read.
Here's the obligatory chapter highlight of my favourite part. The intros to the chapters have really been my favourite so far, I'm already working on the next chapter and I think it might be different for that one.
Tumblr media
Give it a follow on your preferred platform if you like it. It is updating every other Friday and I tend to do longer chapters to compensate for that.
Any thoughts from anyone who's checked it out?
Thanks always for the support!
Alright, here we go!
My speculative-evolution serial novel Fellow Tetrapod is finally live on Royal Road.
Go check it out. If it looks like your sort of thing, follow the story. It updates every weekday.
(if you want to know more...)
Koenraad Robbert Ruis used to be a paleontologist, but now he's a cook at the United Nations embassy to the Convention of Sophonts. His bosses must negotiate with intelligent species from countless alternate earths, and Koen must make them breakfast. It turns out, though, that Koen is rather better at inter-species communication than any other human in this world (all nine of them). Everyone loves to eat (certain autotrophs excepted).
Fellow Tetrapod is an speculative-evolution office comedy about food preparation, diplomacy, and what it’s like to be a talking animal.
Serialized every weekday on Royal Road (https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/59198/fellow-tetrapod) and (one week earlier) Patreon(https://www.patreon.com/danielmbensen)
Cover art by @simon-roy. Illustrations by Tim Morris.
