(6/10) Migrant from Corona to San Franstokio - Part 1

Oups, I forgot to give a list of general things happening instead of what happens each chapter, I need to make it faster, so, here we go again:

At Corona Expo, Varian meets Allistair Krei and they become friends, Krei stopped Mr. Croix from damaging Varian's invention, so, the green vortex emergency doesn't happen.

Varian takes Krei to meet Quirin, both have a chat and that's when Krei offers a free scholarship for Varian at San Franstokio High School

Quirin is going to think about it and Varian is hyped about this futuristic city, meanwhile Var shows Krei the Ruins of Old Corona next to the mansion, then the whole house, and finally, his laboratory, (don't forget or little raccoon is already a frequent Varian visitor and friend)

And this is when Krei's greed reaches the highest point, definitely this kid is able to build awesome machines, and in his need of social interaction he even gives away some more of them to Krei.

Is he going to take advantage of this little kid admiration and accept all the presents? Yes!, but he is not that evil, if the kid gives more inventions, it will be thanks to his millionaire scholarship.

They go back to Quirin to hear his answer, and the answer is NO THANKS, ~boom~ , Krei gently express his worry and deception at this decition, and, with no offense purpose, just consider how Corona offers little opportunities for science, and as for prodigy children, here they have none, while in San Franstokio there are lots, so they won't ever feel alone or misunderstood, please reconsider.

I forgot to tell, in this alternative universe, I kind of vizualized how the black rocks problem would be a little more difficult to reach, because all of them would grow on the archeological cave system and on the plumb systems underground.

So, this time the government (King Frederick) would have more time and more tools to hide this from the population and from the princess, depopulation just now about how the water is starting to run off, and how the plumb system get swords for reasons unknown

So, there is less and less population on the borders of Corona, only the capital islands have not this problem (yet), Varian barely knows because the police body makes a better job restringging the access to these places.

And once Krei leaves, Quirin and Varian have a verbal figth similar to the one we say before the Amber incident, but this time is most oriented to the reality of this country, Varian is politely but angryly expressing his disgust about Antique Corona dying and getting-

ghdhdjd i mean??? a lot of s3 episodes are a metaphor for the main conflict and this one isn't exempt, even if it's kinda ridiculous, the general beats of "two friends who hurt each other and need to mend their relationship to save other people" are present 😭 i have evidence wait

1. The apple is the moonstone and yes it may be a stretch but also it's very funny if i'm right

2. Rapunzel saying "Maybe it's time for you all to just shake hands and get along" which is like...... yeah

3. In general Max making decisions without taking Ruddiger's input into account even tho on one occasion at least Ruddiger was right (😭 i'm saying the parallel is here not that it's SMART)

4. Ruddiger realising his friendship with Max is more important than the apple......

5. This sentence which is undeniably a parallel okay wait

8x16 Rewatch: Nicholas Obenrader

IRS storyline. Red’s friendly thief talks about someone going to Boston University. Another one going to college. Agnes will tie into their college storylines somehow. I love Red’s comment about Ressler. “Black shoes, cheap suit, flat stomach, regulation cut - don’t get me wrong, he’s bent, just not as bent as we’d like him to be.”

“Why must you always be early?” This ties in Ressler’s comment to Liz in Brothers. “Not on my watch.” Whatever happens, he’ll be early. Ressler informs the team. He knows a great deal about the Yakuza because of Mako Tanida. 

Espinosa was building his golden parachute like The Director did. He takes a 10% cut from the 40% cut the crew is supposed to get. Red’s friend informs Neville. He’s boxing Espinosa just like he did Rudigger. Neville’s people have no reason to doubt Liz. He already knew she was an agent.

“She’s really good. But I think we’ll all be a lot better when this is done.” A nice hit to the note the woman from Paris left for Red. “You’re good. I’m better.” The worst has yet to come.  “Liz’s mom abandoned her. She would never do the same to Agnes.” Aram has no clue why Katarina gave Liz up for adoption. She had no choice. Liz will realize this soon enough when her own child ends up in danger because Neville wants to kill her. Katarina didn’t make a mistake, Liz did. 

The whole brother of Charles at the lake house reminds me of Liz’s comment about Ressler’s lake house when she spoke to Laurel Hitchin in 4x19. 

Liz is so disrespectful. Anyway... Cooper sent Aram to Paris because he’s still unofficially working with Liz. Ressler last week, Aram this week. Cooper basically knew Aram would be meeting with Liz. I will blame the entire task force along with Liz for whatever happens to her and/or Agnes and/or Jennifer because they failed to arrest her and chose to work against Red instead. He’s their CI. Liz is not. Red put her on the blacklist for a reason. Panabaker put her on the wanted list for a reason. 

“If I were you, I’d like the finish line.” Red’s comment is a nice kick back to his comment to Liz in Devlin’s episode, S5. “Our sprint to the finish. The bag is just out of reach now.”

I love Aram’s care for Agnes in this episode, but I laugh at Liz’s comment.  “Where we live is quiet and peaceful.” A nice kickback to the scene cut in 7x13 for their War and Peace theme. Ressler's "But maybe this will help us." US being Keenler. A hearing aid that blocks out sound. Cut to Agnes' name on her passport meaning Peace. “Your daddy just always taught me to be ready for a rainy day.” This runs through The Freelancer in 8x5. “There's a number pre-programmed. You ask for Charlotte. You tell them you got caught in the rain and need to dry off.” It won’t be quiet and peaceful for long. Charlotte’s web is about to get tangled. 

“I’ve done some awful things.” Liz kicking back to S3... again. “I have done... so many terrible things. I have hurt so many people."

“Whoever said crime doesn’t pay wasn’t very good at it.” When crime nearly costs Liz her daughter... she’ll understand what that truly means. It’s a dialogue that kicks back to The Ethicist in S6. “He did a cost-benefit analysis on these people, figured that the cost outweighed the benefits, and killed them because of it." Liz believes the benefit outweighs the cost. It doesn’t. 

Finally, some Ressler action in a lake house. 

Sikorsky’s official name is Ivan Stepanov. Red’s friend in the East. Officially, he’s SVR. Unofficially, he’s a high-ranking member of Zaslon. running black-ops around the globe. “Mobilize assets.”

Red doesn't expect Obenrader to reveal anything meaningful about Neville's organization. Obenrader knows the blowback it’ll have on his loved ones if he does. This is what Liz will have to worry about later. The blowback on her loved ones. More specifically, Jennifer and Agnes. 

Whoever their inside man is, it’ll be a low-level agent like The Director’s friend in Zal Bin Hasaan’s episode. I’m expecting someone outside the task force, but close enough to tap the phone. They know Liz is using burners, so they had to tap Ressler’s. Yeah, another kickback to S3. 

The task force can’t arrest Stepanov, so they’re letting Liz extract him. Because they chose to work with Liz and Ressler contacted her about Stepanov while having a tap on his phone, Neville’s own people got their hands on him first. Precisely the point. They just put Liz in the direct line of fire because Katarina was N-13 and she’s very much alive. I thought it’d be Paula who got into his line, but it was Neville’s people. Guarantee Stepanov can prove Katarina was N-13, and knows the identity of imposter Katarina. This knowing will be Liz’s downfall. He’s going to protect Red at all costs (tortured or not) because he and Red have been working on this project together for the past 30 years.

“Oh, my stars” is a common quote from Red. He used it in Lord Baltimore with Yaabari. "Let me guess, I stole something from you. A painting, jewelry.... your heart."  Red’s new asset is gorgeous as hell. Priya Laghari. 

“I want to be your angel.” - Red

Red pulls a fake shooting on Ressler and Park so as not to look like a CI in bed with the FBI. “Of course, a mystery is only as good as the story around it.” Red saying exactly what I’ve been saying about his real identity. It has to fit the story around it. 

Alina Park is pretending to read Just Fly Away by Andrew McCarthy. “A powerful story about family secrets, first love, the limits of forgiveness, and finding your way in the world.”

“Like taking candy from a kid.” A hit to Rizal’s episode. This is where Agnes falls in, along with the dialogues about spoiling her rotten. 

“You think you’re giving her a rope to hang herself. I fear you may be giving her a rope to hang all of us.” A nice hit back to 8x14. “I’m responsible for Mary Bremmer’s murder, Dembe’s torture, and I got nothing to show for it, except for another reminder that no matter how tight the noose, Reddington will always cheat the hangman." To be clear, Liz fully accepting responsibility for the murder of Mary Bremmer, so what comes to Jennifer will be on her. That whole washer necklace choking Mary through Liz’s Cyranoid. She didn’t specify that it brought her good luck, only that it brought her luck... because Tom Keen is bad luck. 

A noose for Jennifer Reddington. Then Liz will have something to show for it. 

Red is worried about Priya. He hired her to assassinate Neville. 

He should be worried. This focal shot is a kickback to Roy Cain's episode in S7. His "knock on wood" will push back to Liz and her fate.

Purposeful stuff. 

A kiss of death... like the woman from Paris kissing Red before injecting him. It also makes me think of The Apothecary, the Scotch. Just throw it in the bottle while he's gone and be done with it. While she may not kill Neville, I do think she’ll be the reason Red’s friend Ivan will survive. She’s a thief. "Items” include people. That's what Neville wants Priya to steal. She's gonna steal Ivan Stepanov. "Item" is how Red referred to Raymond’s bones in S5 and how they referred to Karakurt when he came in country in S2... items. Rakitin wasn’t worth the save. 

The Stranger by Albert Gamus. The book Dembe was reading that Red starts to read. The novel is famous for its first lines: “Mother died today. Or maybe it was yesterday, I don’t know.”

"Katarina Rostova was N-13. And Katarina Rostova is dead." Ivan Stepanov speaks truth. Red is N-13 because he's Katarina. SHE has been dead for 30 years. Of all people, the person who created the archive can prove who stole it in 1990. Expect Neville to be pissed because he's been chasing the wrong woman for 30 years. Ivan can reveal it all without revealing Red's real identity.

Neville’s comment about her innocence. “But Katarina Rostova was framed. Which means I dedicated my life to the hatred of an innocent woman.” This pushes back to Red’s comment in 8x2. “Is that the story she told you? She's a victim? An innocent wrongly accused?" What Ivan will be revealing to Neville. The real Katarina Rostova was no innocent. He knows Red is Katarina and he knows he’s dead either way because he created the archive that took Neville’s family. "Do you know who I am? Because I know who you are. You're the one who created the archive that destroyed my family." He’s gonna put Liz on the chopping block. "And I asked you to fly here so I could look you in the eye and tell you: I agree... for now." Because he has no idea she’s Katarina’s daughter, which means he has no idea she’s Red’s daughter.  

Full drive through the rest of the season. The first person Neville would kill... is Liz.

(4/10) Alive Ulla AU - Part 15

Hello guys , finally I'm going faster ~

Well, due to this AU being about Ulla staying alive during her staying on the Eternal Library (and considering the existence rules I imagined and explained before), this would be the main differences:

Not unhinged : Of course it was sad to betrayed , she is angry at her betrayer, but her body is healthy and she even feels renewed, so, less stress or pain/death trauma to deal, she will recover from this.

Faithful: Feeling trapped, the objetive is reach freedom, so, of course she will explore alternatives, possessing a living body is no needed because she is not a ghost, she is a living being, not everything is lost.

New objetive : What will she do once out of this?, Return to her family. She will go back home with Quirin and Varian, if they are too old (or even dead) , she will search her offspring, Varian's sons, daughters or grandchildren, if he died without it, then search for her twin Ulf's offspring, anything left of her family.

What to do meanwhile?: Keep track of time and feed her hunger of knowledge and peace, lots of answers will be reached here, lots of imaginary friends will be met here (autors speaking to the readers, even interactive texts, feels super realistic), she has her support group.

New habilites: She not only learned modern alchemy, or multiple hobbies, she also keeps working at casting her own twist for searching books and organizing unorganized students texts, as the librarian she is at heart.

The times has come, Varian was able to open the Eternal Library , she is ready since three days ago his arrival, besides, she set a welcome party, delicious food, games and an defense or attack arsenal with her and for his friends.

Why? Because she also learned divination, the limit is her space, she cannot divinate what happens outside the radio of 3m where she stands, besides, she is a scientist who now the "once you observe a phenomena, the phenomena changes" theory.

She found lots of "future lines" where she was dead , ohhhh..., but in this one were she is alive, still, there are lots of incomes

(And me as an author, picked the easer one xD)

Varian gets in, alone, reciently betrayed by that friend Hugo , according to the lots of visions she saw, he is a good guy who will give up Donella and her agresive second visit to the library.

And Ulla steps in, calls her son, and his reaction has no delay, he recognizes her, even when she saw in the visions how they hugged lots of variants and repetitions, when the hug happens in this real life, she feels so overwhelmed and the hug becomes even more emotional than she initially thought it would be.

Then she hurries him to a desk , and hurries him to read together a notebook she wrote, please do not skip anything, imagine what he reads , or the magic won't work, he looks like he is confused but obeys, he is a fast reader, he smiles because of the silly sweetness of the text, so the task is done quickly.

A portal appears, Ulla invites him in and the magic happens, just as the texts said, both are in a pretty garden in front of a fancy house, a little table set with apple and chocolate desserts, jam and cheese sandwiches....

And his spade he made with electric wires when he was 13 (the one he showed Eugene and by accident, it evaporated a whole paper poster).

And she carefully takes it and hands it to Varian, and tells him to use it to destroy the desks in front of Donella when she arrives, do not hurt Hugo, he will reconciliate with the team, do not let Yong and Nuru near the spade, it's too reactive.

Demand answers to Cyrus and Donella, if they remember Ulla, if they killed her, what were they planned to do with the eternal library.

That would be only to distract them while she operates, operate what? Later, if they attack first, he can send a full blow to them, they won't die (permanently), just like herself.

Daaaaaammmmm... Mom, are you okey? They wanted to kill her, this is her payback, a way to subdue them, besides, they need to be stopped and jailed, she knows a big list of their crimes against the 7 kingdoms and the lives that ended because of their greed.

The wait time is over, Varian must go outside this notebook, Ulla will go out in 5 minutes once everyone is distracted.

He is not as confident as he was expected to be, is his mom really alive or a ghost? Her body felt firm, or was it a result of the magic here? He won't be a murderer.

(2/10) Blind Hugo - Part 2

Let's continue with a little fanart made with hurry,

Extra note, my progress got erased three times and I had to re-write u__u

1.- What had been Hugo doing while Varian, Nuru and Yong were outside ? Being taking cared by Rudigger, Olivia and Prometeus , he is supposed to take rest and sleep a lot, only getting up for water , food and maybe sit around, easy for the pets, Rudigger was provided with a wall clock, so he can carry the medicines in time.

2.- And well, surely, Ruddy was there to change the wet cloth over his eyes, feeling sad when Hugo groaned in pain , the others do those kind of things at night, before going to bed.

3.- But well, no, today Hugo got bored and tough it would be a nice idea to go to their kitchen and make a sandwich, he is not an invalid.

Rudigger got angry at the mess he has to clean, ingredients in the floor, the meal was already done and saved on a basket, Ruddy would have to just go and serve it, even if Ruddy hissed and signaled the things, he had to get his attention by pulling Hugo's arm or hand, Hugo barely distingued a blurry black paw moving, but, due to not understanding animal lenguage, Hugo thought Ruddy was being a prick and was obstaclulising his lunch time, or just wanting him to go back to bed, he wouldn't, so they started a cat figth.

4- Hugo asked Olivia to figth back Rudigger and she did , Ruddy gave up , definitely not fighting a robot that obeys one persons voice, they don't speak the same language, and after Hugo finished his sandwich, we wanted to go out and take a walk outside,his plan has to just recognize the place, not going too far, or maybe yes but in a straight line and then in reverse

5.- But Prometeus got in his was, pushing him, Hugo tough Prom was obstaclulising his way so he pushed back, until Ruddy jumped on Hugo's shoulder , he wanted to strike at Rudigger until his hand got caught, Ruddy took it to shove Prom's reins on it, and then jump to Prometeus back, Hugo was confused but the understood, they wanted to guide him and don't let him get lost.

Wait , why did I made those points more descriptive than the past ones that were way more interesting? well, because when I started this one's I had more time (seven days ago)

So let's go faster before I run out of time again

Extra note : Hugo has been getting Donella's messages, Olivia brings them, but he can't read them, so, he just writes on both sides of the paper "talk to you later" and send them back, he has tried to "go on a walk" alone to encounter her, but nobody and no animal leave him alone.

6.- The human team noticed the animal team had problems of communication and proper lead, so, they started to take more turns, of course, they stopped researching Ulla's diary to keep researching medical options for Hugo

7.- Varian turns were full of human experimentation, testing all oftamologist products with new addition Varian did, Young turns were full of entertainment made for the blinds, guessing, reading, soft martial arts, and some accidents Young had, due to his prone to disaster nature, Nuru turns would be Hugo's actual relief, because she would be like a mom taking care of a sick son, and chatting a lot about the situation, about their feelings, and spectations , encouraging words with also reality slaps.

8.- Nuru needed the team to hurry and find the eternal library, she is still worried about the coming meteor disaster on her kingdom , so after weeks, watching no big improvement, she calls a meeting, saying that, in the Eternal Library , they will be able to find The Cure for Hugo sickness, so it's better to let him stay safe with other people to take care of him, maybe she can provide him nurses and a place to stay in her kindgom.

9.- Hugo kind of looks offended , but kept quiet to hear about the others reactions, Varian is taken aback, the idea of leave him behind is hard, Young volunteers to stay with Hugo all the time, but Nuru and Varian say no thanks, after all he is a child, need adult supervision, not supervising a vulnerable adult, what if they have another fire related accident alone?, Maybe is better to accept Nuru's offer

10.- But that also makes them wonder about the next stage, what if Hugo gets stuck on a meteor shower? So they think about another place like Corona , but thinking about it, that place is very behind time about scientific development and about medical care so instead of get taking care of, he will end up just waiting with no real treatment, next they think about Yong kingdom , with his family or maybe hired nurses , very much nicer place where Hugo will be able to have a naturalist treatment and maybe get a treatment from any doctor, because Yong kingdom gets a lot of migrants.

11.- Hugo just thinks if is he being a burden for them, he should go back with Cyrus and Donella, his adoptive mother, no wait, his boss, so she can give him a better place to stay, keep hidden the secret and stop pretending, the Kingdom he is from, is supposed to have a higher scientific development so maybe with Donella help he can have a better quality doctor and stay with the people he grew up with.

12.- The night arrives, everyone looks asleep, but Hugo is writing a letter for Donella saying something like " I'm very sorry, I'm leaving, I can't keep going, please find someone else to help you with your mission I can no longer do it, I'll go-" and then he herd Varian voice in front on him asking was was he doing, Hugo hides the letter under the covers and evades, but Varian readed all

(3/10) How does the Eternal Library works 📚 Part 3 and final

So well, I thought about this lastly:

1.- Once the totems/tokens are inserted on the library portal, the machine reads the age of the totems and the people who touched them.

That way this can happen

1.1.- The people participating on the trials , or getting invited by the ones who did it (or by stealing) , can access ,only them.

1.2.- The people get access to their current year side of the library, so, it's easy to find things from their own time lapse, if they want to find other times books, they should cross their own time first

1.3 This way, time travel is avoided, yeah, you can read "out of your time books" but no go further or backwards on earth, whatever you find here, is for your own time line.

1.4 Whenever the visitors think is enough, they can get out in the floor where the portal was opened, get to the original sanctuary building, and restore their path like no time passed , after all, there is no oxidation inside the library, no aging up.

2.- Once the visitors are outside , they can close the door by turning off the machine, a backup energy is saved , so , once shutting down, the tokens are absorbed by the machine and teletransported back to their temples

2.1 So , no matter how hard the visitors are holding them, they can't keep them, avoiding not-trialed visitors, if they want to visit again, they have to be trialed again or get invited by recently trialed people, so better make sure they got the information they were searching, also make sure didn't leaved things or others behind.

3.- Temples and the sacred hidden place for the portal are not feed by eter, so they are not eternal, they are feed by each totem/token magic, so, as long as they are on their elements, the places will reconstruct itselves .

3.1 For Demanitus and our heros, lost the temples may not be a problem, they look indestructive, but for milenia in the future, if the Dark kingdom gets too much artificial lights, if the water kingdom dries, if the fire kingdom gets the volcano mined out, etc. , the tokens/totems would lose their natural source of magic and die, the Library dimensions is still there feed on eter, but the entrance would be lost forever

3.2 Unless the totems/tokens get artificially feed , that would take a lot of work, but may not be impossible

4.- Speaking about milenia in the future, when our heroes actively wanted to reach the top floor of the library, they found modern books , yes, but also big black boxes with no books inside, going around, near the obligatory desk each floor has to sit and read, there would be another desk with a machine to read whatever is inside those black boxes

4.1.- Yes, I talking about computers , all the data backuped, and not only internet data, also animation studios data storages, enterprise buildings, governments , every one storage of data, no matter if they got destroyed or deleted on the normal world.

4.2 Maybe our heroes wouldn't handle the computer, so,they would have to go to lower floors and learn how to use properly a basic computer, the manuals section would help.

5.- The spell works on shelfs of books, baskets of scrolls and data storages because that's the primal concept Demanitus conjured for searching, not everything with something written on it

5.1 That's why the library doesn't look like an apothecary store or like a supermarket, because etiquettes, banners and printed containers are not supposed to be information holders

5.2 Besides , most products have their data, list of ingredients, warnings, package designs and mascots shown on the books of the enterprise manufacturing them, trough photos or descriptions

5.3 Any way , if someone on the library wants to test any product, is posible thanks to the magic of this place .

6.- Finally, How to make the magic work?

Step 1 : Find the desk were you are going to read it's almost at the very entrance, you have companions ? The desk will expand so everyone has the same chance to sit and read

Step 2: Go to the Bibliography case to search the location of the books you are interested in, you have not a particular interest? Watch around

Step 3: Locate the book and pick it, people with hurry may read right there on the shelf, but no magic would happen.

Step 4: Bring the book to the desk and read, stay comfy so your body eases and let himself fall into the information, it's useful to have a dictionary , some pens and blank papers, the desk has them.

Step 5: You need to finish be book and understand it, like a normal reader okey? , if you can't handle too much text, maybe you should try a more simple book, if you have no problem, then enjoy.

Step 6: Now that you understood all from beginning to end, and you now what is all about, the book liberates magic, a portal gets open , if you touch it , you get in, now you are a character visiting the world as the book portrays it

Was it a recipes book? Cook and taste, all the ingredients and tools are at your disposal

Was it a catalog? Try everything as you like

Was it a vacation trip book? The whole place is for you to enjoy

Was it a narrative book? Live your romance , your superhero history, face your fears, cry about other people heartaches, or live a slice of life with comfort fluffy things happening to you

Was it a history book? Get a closer look for all the details you wanted to observe and analize

Step 9: If you want out, gatter your things and leave, if you want to stay, you can, the antioxidation spell won't let you die from hunger or sleep deprivation, but can go and play to go to sleep on the desk or in a book dimension with pleasent bedroom to sleep, architecture and indoors design books are the best for it.

For people not knowing about this , Varian is a character from Tangled the series / Rapunzel Tangled Adventure , pretty interesting to watch.

Corona as kingdons became bigger , and the world arround it, including the big alliance, the 7 kingsdoms .

And , during this, lots of fans became attached to this character very multifacetic and with an surprisely cool lead on his character grouth.

Later, once Tangled the series had his final season ready , there was some material about Varian and the 7 kingsdoms , as an AU (Alternative Universe) or well, a solid proyect waiting for a chance to be aproved.

So well, we think this could be big and very likeable for you all, lets wait for a cool outcome ;D greetings and thankies for reading.

Rapunzel Appreciation Week Day One: Birthday

Summary: For the first time in a very long time, Rapunzel had yelled at someone angrily. Not someone, no; her dad. The King, who wanted to order her to stay behind and hide. Rapunzel had yelled, because she knew that if it was her or Arianna who had been kidnapped, the King wouldn't hesitate - but it was Eugene, and, apparently, he wasn't family enough for him.

Or what if, in Secret of the Sundrop, Varian hadn’t kidnapped the Queen but Eugene?

Note: This doesn’t really fit the prompt for any other reason than taking place during Rapunzel’s birthday, oops :’)

Lost in the fog, her entire kingdom in danger because of what she did to - or, worse, didn't do for Varian, Rapunzel felt somehow detached from reality. There was… some kind of monster, chasing them and hurting people, and she couldn't determine what it was. People were yelling - yelling orders or yelling for someone or yelling in pain - and her heart was thrumming with anxiety and- and-

If she had helped Varian, none of this would have happened. The guilt was here, an ever-growing monster pressing inside her chest and taking the breath out of her lungs as her hands shook at her sides.

Suddenly, Eugene was behind her, his hand on the small of her back as he pushed her out of the way. He was frowning, trying to take a look at the thing hiding in the fog, but he still took the time to check her over, a small, worried smile on his lips. And just like that, she could breathe again. She- she wished she had helped Varian. She wished she had been there for him during the storm. And maybe if she had gone with him, none of this would have happened, but not because she would have saved his Quirin - because Corona would have been destroyed by the snow, and a lot of her subjects would have died.

In another world where she had helped Varian during the storm, who knew how many other newly orphaned kids would have attacked Corona in his stead, because she had failed as their Princess and let their parents die?

The guilt stayed there, warm inside her heart, but it quieted, becoming less smothering when confronted by logic. She should have done better after the storm, should have helped him then, but she couldn't have changed the initial situation. She… She would try to make things right. She set herself free again, she wouldn't let her dad manipulate and imprison her in a tower again, and she would help Varian, one way or another. But for now, he was a threat, and she needed to act. She couldn't allow herself to be submerged by her feelings.

A sudden movement to her right startled her, though not as much as the sight of her mother, sword in hand in the battlefield, did.

"Mom?" Rapunzel called, a mixture of feelings preventing her for saying more.

"Rapunzel!" Arianna ran to hug her, and even if it wasn't quite the time, Rapunzel melt into her embrace anyway. A growl from the fog made them jump back quickly.

"Mom, what-"

"I wasn't going to hide while my family and subjects risked their lives," she answered, raising her sword with a confident smirk on her lips. Rapunzel laughed, and went at her side, ready to protect her kingdom too.

Once they understood that the creature was playing hide-and-seek with them, it was pretty easy to defeat it - Rapunzel was used to finding a chameleon, big monster here was an easy job. She ordered Pete and Stan to drive it one way, and Eugene and Lance the other, to try and make it fall into her trap. Lance had said something that she couldn't hear over the noise, but the work was done anyway and soon, they had caught the creature, which was none other than Rudigger. Seeing the destruction that was left behind, the wounded still moaning in pain as others helped them to their feet, Rapunzel felt a cold anger building inside of her.

Varian went too far. She might feel guilty about her role in all of this, but it was no excuse for this, no excuse for Varian risking the lives of everyone. She knew she would have to make her mistakes up to him, but for now, and as long as he persisted in this path, he was a threat that needed to be stopped. It all needed to end. And now her dad was telling her that she shouldn't have left her room, and her mom was arguing with him, sword in hand, and Rapunzel only wanted all of this to stop. It was selfish, perhaps, but she was tired of being manipulated and hurt by those she loved on her birthday.

"Princess," Lance interrupted, voice too choked and nervous for her comfort. "Eugene's not here."

She swirled around so quickly she startled him. "What?"

"He- I didn't see him when you told us to distract Rudigger, and I still don't see him now," he explained. Her mind flashed back to his inaudible voice some minutes prior, that she had dismissed so easily. Another mistake. "I- I think someone took him."

It's funny, in a way, how she had wanted everything to stop mere seconds ago, only to regret it when time froze as dread washed over her. She… She hadn't seen Eugene since he had smiled to her earlier, hadn't even heard him and- How could she have not noticed? No matter how focused she was, she should have- she should- Lance shouldn't have had to tell her, because she knew he never would have had to tell Eugene if she disappeared. People were talking around her, but her heart was beating so loudly that she couldn't focus on any of it; couldn't focus on anything else than her guilt, slowly trickling into her growing anger.

Someone took Eugene.

Varian took Eugene.

"I'm getting him back," she growled, her nails biting into her palms as she tightened her fist. The King was already fighting her on it, telling her that it wasn't safe, but she didn't care - she would get Eugene back, one way or another.

One year ago, Eugene had given everything to save her - and Rapunzel was ready to do the same for him today. He was her dream and no guilt, no parents, no kingdom could ever make her give up on him.

Rapunzel had yelled, because she knew that if it was her or Arianna who had been kidnapped, the King wouldn't hesitate - but it was Eugene, and, apparently, he wasn't family enough for him.

She bit back the scathing answers on the tip of her tongue, bit back the desire to tell her father that Eugene was more family than anyone else here, bit it all back because that was counterproductive and they didn't have time. Eugene didn't have time.

Finally, they came up with a plan. Rapunzel knew they couldn't impulsively burst into Varian's home, because he was too smart for it to work, but waiting and talking and thinking seemed to take an excruciating time. She didn't want to imagine the worst, didn't think that Varian was the sadistic type - he was, despite everything, a hurting kid that had resorted to anger out of desperation, as hard as it was to remember in this situation. But the fact of the matter was that Eugene was in his clutch. At the very least, he had to be knocked out and restrained, and that mental image only made Rapunzel want to be sick. Imagining Eugene being hurt and helpless, on her birthday… It brought back memories she tried hard everyday to forget.

She was supposed to sneak in accompanied by Lance, who had insisted on helping get Eugene out. Her parents, the guards and Shorty, disguised as her, would offer Varian a distraction while they freed Eugene. They had been proud of this strategy but, not even five minutes in, her and Lance had been captured, feet stuck on the ground by Varian's  weird purple goo.

"Welcome back, Rapunzel," Varian laughed, his eyes hard as he took in her appearance.

It was all so different from their first meeting. The guilt was roaring its ugly head again, because Rapunzel knew that the eager kid she had met back then shouldn't be so bitter and angry today, but her growing fury made it hard to sympathise.

"Varian," she growled, more poised than she thought she could be, "where is Eugene?"

He smirked, condescendance dripping from his voice. "Princess, I know it's hard for you to understand, but you are in no position to demand anything," Varian said, and Rapunzel had to fight the desire to tell him just how much she understood. She had never been allowed to demand anything, never had anyone truly listen to her wishes except-

Except for Eugene. And for him, she would bit her tongue and play Varian's game.

"In the spirit of compromise," Varian singsonged, going towards curtains she hadn't seen before, "how 'bout I meet you halfway?"

Nothing Rapunzel had imagined could compare to seeing Eugene, gagged and hands chained to the wall behind him as he strained against it. She called for him and she could hear him call for her back, his voice muffled by the gag and- and- Was he as horrified as she was right now when he found her again in the tower one year ago? In the split second he had to register the situation, in that split second before being stabbed, did he also feel like the entire world lost its focus except for her eyes, a sick feeling creeping up his throat? His hands were hung low behind his back, forcing him to kneel awkwardly, and she couldn't understand what he was yelling angrily under the gag, but she guessed it was unsavoury. Eugene, forced to be captive and silent was an unnatural sight that she instantly hated, and she only wanted to free him.

Rapunzel felt Lance's arms going around her as she tried to go to Eugene, felt Varian's solution anchoring her to the ground anyway, but she didn't care. She didn't care and she couldn't care, not when the love of her life was helplessly looking at her, fear evident in his gaze.

If Eugene could talk, she would have no doubt that the fear was for her and her alone. But he couldn't - and so, Rapunzel let this image burn itself inside her mind and harden her heart.

"Let him go, Varian," she ordered, but he ignored her.

"I will, but first, I need you to do something for me," he explained lightly.

"What do you want?" Lance intervened, more serious than Rapunzel had ever heard him. His gaze was hard and angry, but she didn't notice, eyes still meeting Eugene's as he strained against his bounds. She knew he hated this - knew the guilt he would feel because he had been used against her, had put her in danger by being captured. She knew he would think that, and that she would fight him on it because it wasn't his fault, but Eugene wouldn't see it the same way. He wouldn't care about what happened to him, but what had nearly happened to her because of him, because he was more self-sacrificing than anyone else.

Well, Rapunzel was too.

"Now you care about what I want," Varian exclaimed, drawing her focus on him again as he grew closer to Eugene. "All it took was threatening the things you love the most."

His hand went to pat Eugene's hair lightly, and he didn't even flinch at the death glare his former idol sent his way. Rapunzel did, though - she did when Eugene turned his gaze towards her again, and begged with everything but his voice that she didn't listen to the kid. Varian was explaining his plan, going on about how her unbreakable hair should be able to shatter the amber, but she was barely listening.

Earlier, she had wondered if Eugene had felt the same horror and fear when he found her bound and gagged in the tower. Now, she wondered if he had felt the same peaceful clarity, as he chose to give up his life and cut her hair so she could be free. She would do anything to keep him safe.

And, seeing how Eugene was fighting even harder to break free, he knew that all too well.

"It's not your choice, Lance," Rapunzel sighed when he said that she wouldn't risk her life for Varian's plan - but she wasn't looking at him, or at Varian for that matter. Only Eugene. His eyes seemed to be shining in the darkness, intense and pleading, but she couldn't listen to him, not this once.

Especially not when Varian poured his solution on the black rocks, to speed things along as he said. Watching the amber growing and Eugene having to scoot back towards the wall, with Quirin's shadow hanging over them all - it only fed Rapunzel's resolve. It's not your choice, and Eugene knew it, and was fighting his manacles so hard as she let down her hair that she worried he would dislocate a shoulder.

She wouldn't let him die near her birthday again. She wouldn't let him die nearly one year after he made the ultimate sacrifice for her - she had always been ready to do the same for him. Rapunzel wouldn't let Eugene die because she loved him, more than he would ever know.

Varian started his machine, and her entire body hurt. Eugene's screaming got louder behind his gag, but she could barely hear him, her entire body vibrating with pain. Her head felt like it would explode, pain pulsing behind her eyes as she fell to her knees painfully, trying and failing to be quiet. It hurt. It hurt, and Varian said it could shatter her but she was doing it for Eugene, she-

"Rapunzel!" Eugene yelled, pure panic in his voice - he had managed to get the gag off with his frantic movements. "Sunshine!"

She raised her head, mind cloudy with pain, and there he was, looking more scared than she had ever seen him. More scared than when he had decided to give his life for her - and she understood, really, because despite everything, she wasn't as terrified as when Eugene died for her. She didn't care about the pain, not when it could save him.

"Varian, please," Eugene begged, tugging on his bound arms again, "you're hurting her!"

She tried to say that she was okay, like he did when he was the one bleeding out in her childhood home, but she was too breathless to do it. Varian was talking but she couldn't make sense of his words, couldn't make sense of anything but the pain in her bones growing and growing and growing. Then, everything stopped. Her heart was still fluttering in her chest, her entire body still felt numb, but her hair stopped glowing and the pain reduced to aches. She didn't see Lance move after Pascal helped him; didn't see him raise his sword and break Eugene's free, didn't see Eugene run across the room.

But she certainly heard him when he called her name desperately, and she certainly felt him when his hands cupped her cheeks how so softly. His eyes were wildly checking her over, a little damp, and his wrist were red from the chaffing but, overall, he seemed okay - and the weight in Rapunzel's chest lifted with this realisation.

"Sunshine," Eugene breathed, something akin to tears in his voice, "I'm so sorry, I- Are you okay?"

"I'm okay," she murmured, and it wasn't a lie - Eugene was fine. Eugene was safe, and touching her, and now he was hugging her, his embrace warm and tight as they both trembled. She was okay, because he was too.

And when they had to stop Varian - when she had to rescue Cassandra and her mother, when she chose to face her destiny and grab the black rocks, Rapunzel wasn't afraid. She was thinking about her kingdom, her friends and family, Eugene, and she knew exactly what she had to do. She wasn't afraid of pain, if it was to save them.

Eugene had been scared, however. She could hear it in his voice, see it in his eyes, feel it in his shaky hands. She kissed him, to try and tell him that she was fine, but even when he softened, she could see that his anxiety hadn't completely left him. They would both need to heal from this.

"We have got to find better ways to spend your birthday," he laughed, eyes wet, and she could only smile sadly. A birthday where none of them were chained up or risked their lives sounded good, that was for sure.

However, seeing the new path drawn in front of her by the black rocks, Rapunzel wasn't certain they would have a peaceful birthday for quite some time. But, a long as they were fine - as long as Eugene held her hand tightly in his like he was doing now, as long as she knew he was safe and sound - Rapunzel knew it would be okay.
