dark the netflix show and rusty lake/cube escape the games are the exact same thing
gritty northern european horror fantasy thrillers about fucked up little places, fate, religious symbolism, confusing af family trees, shady family-owned business, funny looking vintage sci fi machines, time travel and fucked up clans in fucked up little towns in the woods with goregous aesthetics ranging from victorian through 80s to modern, people dying, cave and old hotel, animals dying, a whole plethora of Torture Devices, experiments, a hard boiled detective that fucks around and *really* finds out, going to therapy but the therapist being just as fucked as you or straight up evil, cults and sacrifices, clocks, a Bad Vibes lake, a place called paradise, recurring symbolic geometry (the triquetra in dark and the cubes in rl) etc
nobody will ever convince me that these two don’t take place in the same universe (pun intended)

i actually fucking love Rusty Lake Paradise, like everything eventually makes so much sense and connects with each other and all the metaphors and stuff
tws for character death and religion(?) and spoilers for Rusty Lake: Paradise, Cube Escape: Samasara Room, and Rusty Lake: Roots below read more
if i need to tag anything else just let me know
like how people continue their behaviour even after they’re given a second chance
and how Jakob helps his family despite the fact that they tried to sacrifice him a few years ago, and they ended sacrificing him to the lake for immortality anyways
and just the whole concept of an island who messed up really badly was striken with the 10 plagues. i just love religious themes in general though so that might just be me
it’s quite obvious through out the game that no one except for Elizabeth actually learns from their mistakes, gerard continuing to eat despite the fact that he literally died and came back to life after eating diseased meat, Nicholas who continued to search for immortality after his wife died and the lake cursed him for it, and David who became a fly creature after being a cocky bitch, and continued to be a cocky bitch. even Jakob, who doesn’t learn from his previous mistake and falls right into the trap his family set to kill him
the fact that the island is name “Paradise” obviously shows that it may have been paradise before when Caroline was still around, but now that she’s dead makes the name a paradox, since 10 plagues can’t possibly be paradise
how the lake is sentient and essentially is a god, requiring memories to sustain itself and feeding on people, turning them into corrupted souls and making them immortal, but likely in constant pain.
how some people were lucky enough to get the formula and achieve immortality, like the Eilander family, but others like William Vanderboom were trapped as a corrupted soul (before he got Rose to resurrect him)
down to the fact that the last name Eilander literally means “Islander” in dutch and they live on an island
i love the funny little horror puzzle game so much

Really loving how with that one Paradise Easter egg and Underground Blossom Harvey's situation in Hotel went from being "poor little mew mew victim of Owl's orders" to "this murderous sadistic bitch is the mastermind behind everything"

Thoughts, headcanons, and ramblings about The Past Within
Obvious spoilers ahead
God, you turn out to be a medium and suddenly every dead relative wants something from you. (Seriously all Rose does is try to help, she does everything they ask. She’s 75, let the woman retire)
Also Rose being the person in the future was technically on my list of theories (albeit one I doubted) so I'll take full credit for that.
For some reason, Albert keeping a diary is funny to me. Imagine him lying on his stomach, kicking his legs while plotting violent revenge.
Something about Rose having the same “it’s me” text when she looks in the mirror as Laura makes me emotional
I really like how they confirmed Albert really does love Rose (or at least he believes he does). It makes him a lot more 3d and less pure evil like he was made to look in Roots. I still think there was some golden child/scapegoat abuse with Rose and Leonard respectively and their relationship is by no means fully good, but it's complicated. I like to compare it to Jinx and Silco’s relationship in Arcane. That being that loving each other doesn’t automatically make the relationship healthy.
Additionally, Albert has definitely climbed up my ladder of favorite characters. He's still under Rose and Laura, but he's just so interesting.
CANON ALBERT VOICE! Praying we get one for Rose in the metro game
I’m CERTAIN that Rose wouldn’t have resurrected Albert if Laura were still alive. She would’ve been content to just be with her daughter but then she died and Rose snapped. She needed a single family member damnit. I don’t blame her for a second
Since 1984 is the latest we’ve gone in the timeline I have a theory that, once we’re done with Dale’s whole plot line, Albert and Rose’s story will be the one we follow. Which we could have more setup for in the metro game with Rose.

Anyone done the sibling song with Mr. Rabbit, Ms. Pheasant, and Mr. Owl? I have a need.
Just wanted to ask before I doodle it myself.

The story of the Vanderbooms is messed up on an epic scale. The damage this family do to each other just escalates and escalates. It’s like a Greek myth.
William is specifically referred to as James’s uncle, which means Aldous is James’s father. James tries to carry on his father’s work and dies in the process. Aldous does not seem to care.
Mary, for reasons best known to herself, gives one of her infant babies  wine and another rainwater. Mary. Mary. Why did you do that Mary.
Albert’s siblings drop a beehive on his head, scarring him for life and giving him a grudge to nurse.
Albert grows up criminally insane (thank you for that Mary) and kills everyone, including his mother, who he feels wronged him.
Albert ends up pretty much raising the next generation of the family. Because he killed all their parents. (I suppose keeping someone prisoner in a well is technically raising them?)
Eventually Albert gets his comeuppance. Rose and her cousin Frank are implied to have a relationship. For the first time in years, no-one is causing direct harm to their family members! amazing! But...
The ghost of William is manipulating things more directly now, and gets the surviving members of the family to resurrect him. It’s not clear to me how Rose feels about anything, how much free will she has etc. but by the time the ritual is over, both the men are dead.
Rose gives birth to Laura, who is William reincarnated, ending this cycle where it began. Rose is presumably all she has left now, since her cousin/lover and her half brother are dead.
Laura kills herself.

The past within spoilers below
Tumblr media
Yea this is just me rambling bout tpw huzzah. Keep in mind I played the future part so maybe I'm missing something.
But yeah, assuming Albert is stuck in the endless loop of the last and present with Rose (which I think he is cuz in the future he says he like. Has to return to the lake with her), the game all culminates into...fucking nothing!
What did we learn from this:
- All time ever to exist exists in the lake all at once (ok fair enough)
- You can bring back a dead guy completely if you make him out of his own body parts (explaination for why William became Laura, but Albert was just Albert)
- Rose and Albert got themselves forever stuck in past/future purgatory so everything you just did in the game leads up to it being tossed out the window
You bring back Albert, yay! Twist (?) Ending revealing none of it mattered? No! Shut up? I probably should!
This game does not effect the main story, provides us with hardly any new information (the saving grace for TWD I think in this criteria is that it let us know how Mr. Owl was fucking with the world beyond the lake), at best it ties a bow onto Roses story which has the potential to be revealed as sad, but it also ties a bow on Albert's story which is unnecessary cuz he was already killed?? In a way that made sense and fit with his actions?? Idk guys I just woke up
((also not like anyone was asking but if at some point in the past it was established that the past and future HAD to be around 50 years apart, then that's some stupidity on Albert's part. Did he forget how fucked up his family is? Really had faith that Rose would live that long?))

Theory that the pigeon who visits in Harvey’s Box is the baby pigeon Harvey saved in Hotel.

I was just going to reply to @sunshine-herricane under the original post, but I figured why not make a longer infodump. So, mind your spoilers and get ready to click a read more link, because it's time to enjoy my personal
Harvey lore rant
Harvey is one of the first two characters to be introduced to us in Cube Escape: Seasons along with Laura. It is known to us that he's a relevant character because otherwise Rusty Lake wouldn't bother to make Cube Escape: Harvey's Box, in which you play as him; plus, if he wasn't relevant you wouldn't need him alive to complete Seasons.
The thing is, I think it's easy to forget about him, or brush him off as a secondary character, since we only see him as a sort of "sidekick". Apart from Harvey's Box, he just makes minor appearances and gets nearly killed by Laura on various occasions (Think of the scene in Cube Escape: The Mill in which Laura, as a corrupted soul, almost chokes him to death).
Things change with Rusty Lake Hotel, where, if you manage to give Owl the Rusty Lake Cigars, it's revealed you're playing as Harvey. This is huge, because at this point you find out that Harvey isn't just a pet, but a character that can be compared to Mr Owl or Mr Crow, which up to this point are the people playing puppeteer with the other characters of the plot.
This is why it's logical to imagine that Harvey's role, in this situation, is to act as a butler for Mr Owl, and one can easily assume that it was Owl's idea to kill the hotel guests. In other words, Owl is the boss, and Harvey is just following orders, whether he likes killing those animal-people or not.
Before getting to Paradise, I think it's important to make a quick stop through Cube Escape: Birthday, in which we see him with his humanoid form for the first time:
Tumblr media
And we also get to see an interesting piece of lore about the corrupted souls of the hotel guests breaking free from their containers and attacking both Harvey and Mr Owl. This way we learn that Harvey is also a shapeshifter, and contrary to Owl or Crow, who have a human and a hybrid form, Harvey seems to be naturally a bird that somehow achieved this (I'm assuming) "enlightened" state of half bird, half human.
This is important information because it indicates that Harvey is likely immortal. This is in line with Rusty Lake Roots: judging from that level in the Emma storyline, Harvey is around the lake in 1891, and is also around Laura's death (1971 according to Cube Escape: Case 23). Now, I know nothing about parrots, but 80+ years is a pretty long life for a parrot that seems suspiciously to never age.
One could argue that this could be just a similar parrot or whatever, but we also know that Hotel takes place in 1893, and Harvey is definitely in that game at least.
Now we get to the infamous Paradise Easter Egg: it's fairly missable, but you can find Harvey sitting on the window sill during the third plague
Tumblr media
This happens in 1796. And being Paradise Mr Owl's origin story, well, this is clearly evidence that Harvey has been around longer than him. This is a theory of mine- but he probably was Caroline's pet, or the one that sparked her research around the lake and immortality.
Point is, this is a huge turn on the Harvey-Owl dynamic: where at first Harvey seemed to be a servant, now he feels a lot more like an equal. At this point of the story I thought that Harvey could've been the one to suggest to Owl to take revenge on his family/hotel guests, and Owl could've been the one saying "let's go for murder".
Except that underground blossom came out.
I won't share screenshots of it because it's another stance of the Rusty Lake franchise being weird about nipples, plus I don't want to spoil much of that game, but to cut it short: toward the last few stations, Harvey decides to torture a pickpocketer for stealing Rose's timepiece.
This is another strong statement about Harvey's personality, since it's clear that he really had no problem killing the various people during Hotel. This puts a bunch of things into perspective, because I mean, c'mon, he deliberately hurts unaware bystanders who just steal shit and aren't really involved (so far) in the plot. One could've said that the Hotel guests "deserved" it (since it's clear they aren't really pleasant or good people either, even before Paradise came out), or again, Harvey was just doing what he's told. But this one scene screams "Harvey is a sadistic bitch" and at this point I'm not even mad about it.
Now the only thing left to find out is when he actually gains his human form- but by the looks of it, the clues are pointing towards him being the oldest immortal bird-person in the lore, and probably the one who knows the real secret to reach ascension and enlightenment.
