Between the Lions, Season 1 (2000)
Tumblr media
I was an adult when this series premiered on television, but I have never let that stop me from enjoying a good show. I saw one episode and was hooked.
If you’re unfamilar (a heart-breaking possibility), the show features a family of lions (puppets) who run a library patronized by chickens, orangutans, dragons, ducks, and authentic live-action humans. There’s also a talking statue bust. Each episode has a lion-centered story interspersed with animated and live-action segments that typically focus on demonstrating the use of a single vowel.
Between the Lions features puppets that are brilliantly designed, expertly built, and wonderfully performed. The writing is first-rate and combines education for children with sharp humor hurled gleefully at their parents, slathered thick with guest spots from people like India.Arie, Denyce Graves, and the occasional basketball star. Then of course there’s the once-scandalous Dr. Ruth Westheimer appearing regularly as Dr. Ruth Wordheimer, making grown-ups do startled double-takes.
When I first saw the show I felt like all the creativity, brilliance, and fun of classic Sesame Street and the original Electric Company had been reborn in a new and modern program. (It is not coincidence that many of the folks showing up in the BTL credits have solid Muppet pedigrees.)
We just won’t talk about the final seasons, when the show went to a split-episode format of two stories per half-hour with most of the cleverness and shine washed away.
I’m delighted to have season 1 on DVD (again) and I’ve been gradually rewatching the episodes.
Sadly, this set won’t offer me the treat of Little Wendy Tales or Swami Smarmy Marmy saying “I see OOPS in your future!” because those came later.
But in season 1 I do get:

Monkey Pop-Up Theatre
What’s Your Name? raps
the evil Un-People
Babs Kaplan
Sam Spud, Par-Boiled Potato Detective
What’s Cookin with Theo and Cleo
and I’m pretty sure “Smarter Than a Puck” is coming too.
This show does my heart good.
