Top Ten Tips for Rwanda
Tumblr media
Though attracting an increasing number of travellers, lured by the pull of gorilla trekking, Rwanda safaris are unlike most safaris you would embark on in Africa; and there are still a number of spots worth exploring. The country's winding alpine roads and narrow valleys are alive with agriculturalists tending their crops, fishermen in dug-out canoes, and women gathering tea on terraced hillsides. In addition, cavernous blue lakes, sweeping savannah and tropical, misty rainforest abound with wildlife just waiting to be discovered...
Here are the top ten highlights of what you could expect on a visit to le pays des milles collines (land of a thousand hills), or the little 'Switzerland of Africa':
• Fabulous flora and fauna: Nyungwe National Park boasts stunning waterfalls, luminous tea plantations, birds, butterflies and buttresses. It also plays host to a gorgeous orchid garden, containing several different varieties of these delicate beauties.
• Up in the Clouds: For the high and mighty, East Africa's only forest canopy walkway has recently been built in Rwanda. Offering spectacular bird's eye views over the forest, it's also a great vantage point for some eye-to-eye monkey business...
• Coastal Retreats: Lake Kivu, one of Africa's deepest freshwater lakes, is the perfect destination to complement Rwanda safaris, due to its picturesque location, colourful resort towns and sandy beaches. Windsurfing and kayaking are popular activities on the lake, as well as a spot of fishing for any of you handy with a rod.
• Cultural Heartbeat: Visit the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Centre of Rwanda, which offers a chance to experience Rwandan rural culture through walks, dancing, archery, cooking, crafts, not to mention, a taste of the local banana brew and the famous 'Songs of the Gorillas'!
• Kigali Chic: Rwanda's sophisticated capital should definitely not be missed from your itinerary. Sip red wine on the terrace of the Hotel des Milles Collines (the original Hotel Rwanda), and don't forget to make a poignant visit to the Genocide Memorial Museum.
• Monkey Business: Rwanda is a top spot for primates and that's before we even get to the Mountain Gorillas, for which the country is renowned. Nyungwe Forest National Park hosts dozens of species, including the rare Golden Monkey, Chimpanzees, Black & White Colobus Monkeys and Baboons, to name a few.
• Animal Parade: In Rwanda's Eastern province, Rwanda safaris start in Akagera National Park - an oasis for all the usual safari suspects you would expect to see from an open topped jeep, including giraffes, hippos, lions, crocodiles, elephants and buffalo. Currently undergoing something of a transformation, Akagera will soon rival some of East Africa's beat known national parks for game viewing.
• Fine Fish Cuisine: Dine by Lake Muhazi, under the shade of a tree full of weaver birds and watch the kingfishers, crested cranes and the otters diving for their own catch of the day...
• For the Active: Mountain biking over Rwanda's 1,000 hills presents a highlight for the adventure seekers. Why not try out the 230km Congo-Nile trail, which provides fantastic views of the Congolese mountains, as well as the active volcano Nyiragongo.
• The Great Apes: & finally of course, follow in the footsteps of Dian Fossey and visit the rare and endangered Mountain Gorillas, with a trek through their rainforest refuge in Volcanoes National Park. As wildlife encounters go, a meeting with a majestic Silverback surely has to top the bill?

It is where you will encounter a diverse array of wildlife, including leopards, elephants, buffalos, zebras, lions, black and white rhinoceroses, panthers, giraffes, and an abundance of antelope species such as topi, impala, and defassa waterbuck.
Rwanda boasts three primary wildlife destinations: Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest National Park, and Akagera National Park. All of them are home to a wide range of fauna. Among these, Rwanda stands as one of the three countries where endangered mountain gorillas can be found. Observing these magnificent creatures in their native environment is an incomparable wildlife encounter. Additionally, visitors have the opportunity to track habituated chimpanzees and golden monkeys, similar to the thrilling gorilla trek. Rwanda's diverse habitats provide a sanctuary for numerous species, including mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, golden monkeys, hippos, giraffes, zebras, leopards, crocodiles, and over 600 bird species.
Volcanoes National Park is renowned for its diverse population of mountain gorillas, with several hundred individuals residing there. The park offers the opportunity to observe a dozen habituated gorilla groups, and a total of 96 tracking permits are issued daily for this purpose. In addition to gorillas, the park is home to various other wildlife species such as the golden monkey, elephant, buffalo, giant forest hog, bushpig, bushbuck, and black-fronted duiker. Bird enthusiasts will find around 200 bird species, including 16 Albertine Rift Endemics, although birdwatching logistics can be challenging in this area.
Nyungwe Forest National Park, on the other hand, boasts the highest level of biodiversity in Rwanda. It safeguards over 1,050 plant species and supports a rich array of wildlife, including 85 mammal species, 310 bird species, 32 amphibian species, and 38 reptile species. Among the park's highlights are its thirteen primate species, such as chimpanzees, Ruwenzori colobus monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, and various other monkey species. Nyungwe is also renowned as a premier destination for forest bird watching in Africa, attracting dedicated birdwatchers from around the world.
Akagera National Park is a traditional African savannah reserve where visitors have the opportunity to spot the Big Five. While buffaloes and elephants are commonly sighted, leopards are frequently observed during night drives. The presence of lions and black rhinos is also steadily increasing. In addition to these magnificent creatures, the park is home to a diverse range of wildlife including Maasai giraffes, Burchell's zebras, warthogs, olive baboons, vervet monkeys, hippos, impalas, Defassa waterbuck, bushbucks, common duikers, elands, topis, Bohor reedbuck, oribis, roan antelopes, klipspringers, and the elusive semi-aquatic sitatungas. Night drives often offer sightings of spotted hyenas, genets, civets, white-tailed mongooses, bushbabies, elephant shrews, as well as various species of owls and nightjars.
Combine game viewing in the National Park with its varied wildlife & gorilla trekking in Rwanda could make your journey exciting. Budget Rwanda safaris
Budget safaris in Rwanda can offer an incredible experience for travelers who are mindful of their expenses. Here are some tips and options for budget-friendly safaris in Rwanda:
Tumblr media
Gorilla Trekking Permits:
The most significant expense for many visitors to Rwanda is the gorilla trekking permit. These permits can be quite costly, but it's a non-negotiable part of the experience. To save on costs, consider traveling during the low season when permit prices may be lower.
Accommodation:
Look for budget-friendly accommodation options in the areas surrounding Volcanoes National Park. Guesthouses, lodges, and budget hotels may offer more affordable rates compared to luxury lodges. However, be sure to check reviews to ensure the accommodation meets your standards.
Group Tours:
Joining a group tour can be a cost-effective way to experience Rwanda's wildlife. Group tours often offer shared transportation, accommodation, and guide services, reducing individual costs.
Transportation:
Explore options for budget transportation. Public buses and shared minivans (known as matatus) can be more affordable than private transfers.
However, keep in mind that the road conditions may vary, and travel times could be longer.
Camping:
Some budget safari operators offer camping options, which can significantly reduce accommodation costs. Camping near Volcanoes National Park may provide a more immersive experience with nature.
Self-Drive Safaris:
If you're comfortable with driving, consider a self-drive safari. Renting a vehicle allows you to explore at your own pace, and it can be a cost-effective option for those on a budget.
Local Food and Markets:
Save on food expenses by eating at local markets and smaller restaurants. This not only supports local businesses but also provides an opportunity to experience authentic Rwandan cuisine.
Off-Peak Travel:
Traveling during the off-peak season can result in lower prices for accommodations and sometimes even discounted permits for gorilla trekking. However, be aware of the weather conditions during the off-peak period.
Research and Compare:
Research various tour operators and compare their prices and offerings. Sometimes, smaller local operators may provide more affordable options than larger, international companies.
Tumblr media
Always ensure that you are booking with a reputable and licensed tour operator to guarantee a safe and enjoyable experience. While opting for budget-friendly options, it's essential to prioritize safety and the well-being of the wildlife and local communities.
