Zachi/Vader Appreciation Post
A lot of Tamagotchi books were released in early/mid-1997 before the release of the International P2 that features exclusive mystery creature Zachi/Vader-chan. While Japan saw a lot of reverse-import International P1s that saw Sam/Bill integrated into most Tamagotchi visual media post-May 1997, the International P2 was much more niche. As a result, there's nearly no art of Zachi/Vader, and no profiles in Japanese guidebooks and comics! He also wasn't included in any of the videogames. Per request, I was able to dig through my library and find some weird little dudes hanging around.
Bask in the alien glory of the most mysterious hidden character!
Tumblr media
Proto-Vader-chan from August 1997's "Tamagotchi Research Report" (Tokuma Shoten's Roman Album line) as the International P2 wasn't released overseas until a month or so later. The tokusatsu alien/robot vibes are strong here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are two Vaders from the harder-to-find second volume of Tamagotchi Research Report. The first is a sticker, while the second is from a gathering on the beach.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tokuma Shoten went to town in their kids activity book "Doko² Tamagotchi". Look at him go! He spends a lot of time either introducing himself (ベーダーでーす "Iiii'm Vader") , hanging with Sam/Bill, or just living it up!!
Tumblr media
Finally, obligatory English profile from the English "The Official Tamagotchi Care Guide and Record Book" by Doris Betz
And...that's it.
Justice for Zachi, he needs more media!!

Another big stop in Tokyo for me was Jimbocho Book Town! It is a neighborhood of, depending on who you ask, up to 400 generally-secondhand bookstores flanked by some of the major universities in Tokyo. The local government even prints out maps of the stores to help people find them all:
Tumblr media
Which, you will note, is not 400 stores, because the process of becoming an "official" Jimbocho Town Bookstore is an intensely political operation run by local stakeholders with tons of fights over what should qualify and what rights that entails - never change humanity!
"Book Towns" used to actually be quite a common thing, and they peaked during the literary boom of the late 19th century. Figuring out "what books existed" was a hard task, and to do serious research you needed to own the books (you weren't making photocopies), so concentrating specialty bookstores in one area made sense to allow someone to go to one place and ask around to find what they need and discover what exists. It was academia's version of Comiket! Modern digital information & distribution networks slowly killed or at least reduced these districts in places like Paris or London, but Jimbocho is one of the few that still survives.
Why it has is multi-causal for sure - half of this story is that Tokyo is YIMBY paradise and has constantly built new buildings to meet demand so rents have been kept down, allowing low-margin, individually-owned operations to continue where they have struggled in places like the US. These stores don't make much money but they don't have to. But as important is that Japan has a very strong 'book collector' culture, it's the original baseball cards for a lot of people. The "organic" demand for a 1960's shoujo magazine or porcelainware picture book is low, but hobbyists building collections is a whole new source of interest. Book-as-art-collection powered Jimbocho through until the 21st century, where - again like Comiket - the 'spectacle' could give it a lift and allow the area to become a tourist attraction and a mecca for the ~cozy book hoarder aesthetic~ to take over. Now it can exist on its vibes, which go so far as to be government-recognized: In 2001 the "scent wafting from the pages of the secondhand bookstore" was added to Japan's Ministry of Environment's List of 100 Fragrance Landscapes.
Of course this transition has changed what it sells; when it first began in the Meiji area, Jimbocho served the growing universities flanking it, and was a hotpot of academic (and political-polemic) texts. Those stores still exist, but as universities built libraries and then digital collections, the hobby world has taken over. Which comes back to me, baby! If you want Old Anime Books Jimbocho is one of the best places to go - the list of "subculture" stores is expansive.
I'll highlight two here: the first store I went to was Kudan Shobo, a 3rd floor walk-up specializing in shoujo manga. And my guys, the ~vibes~ of this store. It has this little sign outside pointing you up the stairs with the cutest book angel logo:
Tumblr media
And the stairs:
Tumblr media
Real flex of Japan's low crime status btw. Inside is jam-packed shelves and the owner just sitting there eating dinner, so I didn't take any photos inside, but not only did it have a great collection of fully-complete shoujo magazines going back to the 1970's, it had a ton of "meta" books on shoujo & anime, even a doujinshi collection focusing on 'commentary on the otaku scene' style publications. Every Jimbocho store just has their own unique collection, and you can only discover it by visiting. I picked up two books here (will showcase some of the buys in another post).
The other great ~subculture~ store I went to was Yumeno Shoten - and this is the store I would recommend to any otaku visiting, it was a much broader collection while still having a ton of niche stuff. The vibes continued to be immaculate of course:
Tumblr media
And they covered every category you could imagine - Newtype-style news magazine, anime cels, artbooks, off-beat serial manga magazines, 1st edition prints, just everything. They had promotional posters from Mushi Pro-era productions like Cleopatra, nothing was out of reach. I got a ton of books here - it was one of the first stores I visited on my second day in Jimobocho, which made me *heavily* weighed down for the subsequent explorations, a rookie mistake for sure. There are adorable book-themed hotels and hostels in Jimbocho, and I absolutely could see a trip where you just shop here for a week and stay nearby so you can drop off your haul as you go.
We went to other great stores - I was on the lookout for some 90's era photography stuff, particularly by youth punk photographer Hiromix (#FLCL database), and I got very close at fashion/photography store Komiyama Shoten but never quite got what I was looking for. Shinsendo Shoten is a bookstore devoted entirely to the "railway and industrial history of Japan" and an extensive map collection, it was my kind of fetish art. My partner @darktypedreams found two old copies of the fashion magazine Gothic & Lolita Bible, uh, somewhere, we checked like five places and I don't remember which finally had it! And we also visited Aratama Shoten, a store collecting vintage pornography with a gigantic section on old BDSM works that was very much up her alley. It had the porn price premium so we didn't buy anything, but it was delightful to look through works on bondage and non-con from as far back as the 1960's, where honestly the line between "this is just for the fetish" and "this is authentic gender politics" was...sometimes very blurry. No photos of this one for very obvious reasons.
Jimbocho absolutely earned its rep, its an extremely stellar example of how history, culture, and uh land use policy can build something in one place that seems impossible in another operating under a different set of those forces. Definitely one of the highlights of the trip.

[A3!] ★ Main Story | Act 14 - DREAM CATCHER | Episode 8 - An Encounter
Tumblr media
Kumon: I can’t wait to see Sumi-san’s performance~.
Izumi: I’m glad we’re able to go and see it before it’s over since they’re nearing the finale and all.
*Tires screech*
Kumon: A taxi…?
*Car door opens*
Tenma: Sorry I’m late.
Tumblr media
Kumon: Good work! There’s still time before the show starts, so you’re all good.
Izumi: Was work busy today, Tenma-kun?
Tenma: Nah, I wasn’t working today…
Izumi: ?
Kumon: I bought a whole supply of triangles! They were doing a Kyoto fair thing at the store, so I got a bunch of different kinds of yatsuhashi~. (1)
Kumon: I’ve got anko, cinnamon, matcha, chocolate, strawberry, banana, curry--.
Tenma: That’s way too much! Wait, is there really such a thing as a curry one…?
Izumi: What should we do? I know it’s a little early, but should we just head to the theater?
Tenma: Since it’s almost the finale, why don’t we get a bouquet?
Kumon: I wonder if they’ve got any triangle flowers or something.
Tenma: They don’t.
Izumi: Ah, if we’re looking for a florist, I know just the place.
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
Izumi: Hello.
Towa: Welco-- Wait, SUMMER TROUPE!?!?
Towa: Huh, what are S-Summer Troupe’s Tenma-kun and Kumon-kun doing here!?
Izumi: You know Towa-kun, the Spring Troupe fan I’ve mentioned before? This shop is owned by his aunt.
Tenma: I see, so this is the one you were talking about…
Kumon: Hello~!
Towa: H-H-H-Hello!
Kumon: Okay, so, we’re going to see Sumi-san’s performance now, and we wanna bring him a bouquet as a gift, but--.
Towa: Ah! Misumi-san’s the one who likes triangles, right!?
Tenma: You sure got to the point fast…
Towa: My aunt’s not here right now, so all I have is the bouquets on display, but if that’s okay, then…
Towa: I think this bouquet with yellow dahlias as the main flower matches Misumi-san’s vibe.
Kumon: Yeah, yeah, it’s perfect! It’s super Sumi-san-core!
Tenma: Nice job.
Izumi: Then we’ll go with this one.
Towa: And take a look at this! The paper bag is a triangle!
Tumblr media
Kumon: Whoa…!
Towa: It’s just a paper bag so you can hold the bouquet without crushing it, but I thought it’d be perfect for Misumi-san…!
Izumi: It truly is a perfect choice. Thank you, Towa-kun.
Towa: No, I should be thanking you! I’ll have it ready in a minute!
Izumi: By the way, how are things going with your troupe? Does it seem like you’re getting any members?
Towa: I… Tried asking my friends, but they weren’t really…
Towa: Some of them said no because they weren’t interested, while others who were originally interested in theater have already joined other troupes…
Kumon: The more new troupes popped up, the more new members got recruited, huh~.
Towa: I feel like I completely missed the wave.
Izumi: I see…
Izumi: (I’d love to help, but I don’t have anyone who fits the bill in mind…)
Ibuki: Heyyy. Dozono Shoten, hereeee.
Izumi: Huh?
Kumon: What!? Ibukichi!?
Ibuki: What’s with you being all over the place suddenly? Does MANKAI Company just lurk everywhere around here?
Towa: That’s not true!!! It’s something rare!!! Seeing them isn’t something that simple!
Towa: And I shouldn’t get used to being this happy either. I need to remember back when I was in middle school when I was just happy to be able to see them through a screen…
Towa: I’ve been so lucky since I moved here that I forgot all about that. I’d better not take this for granted, or else karma will catch up with me.
Izumi: Never change, Towa-kun.
Kumon: I know what you are! You’re like a die-hard fan, right?
Ibuki: I’m getting like a crazy sense of déjà vu right now. What kanji are in your name again?
Towa: “To” like peach and “wa” like peace, but…
Ibuki: Ah--.
Towa: ?
Tenma: By the way, did you say Dozono Shoten?
Ibuki: Yeah, I’m here to deliver for a grocer called Dozono Shoten. BTW, my IRL name’s Ibuki Dozono.
Ibuki: Daddy loves making Ibuki work real hard all ‘cause he’s got a bad back~.
Kumon: Who would’ve thought Ibukichi’s family runs a grocery store…!?
Tenma: It is pretty surprising…
Towa: U-Umm, so you’re Ibuki-kun? And you know about MANKAI Company, right?
Tumblr media
Towa: So are you, maybe like, interested in theater, or…?
Ibuki: What? Hell no.
Towa: Figures…
Izumi: Were you trying to recruit them for your troupe?
Towa: Yeah…
Tenma: This whole one-track mind thing is sounding a lot like someone else we know.
Ibuki: Towa, if you could just sign the receipt for me~.
Towa: Okay…
Ibuki: Well, later, I’ve still got deliveries to make.
*Ibuki runs off*
Towa: Haaah…
Izumi: (Now that I think about it, how did Ibuki-kun know about MANKAI Company if they have no interest in theater?)

Note
So, I had a dream that I fully credit to reading your blog Ray. AN there is the mention of a letter mistaken as a suicide note.
Fem!Ichigo is Chuuya’s mother and Urahara is his father. The story goes like this:
Ichigo has been abandoned by everyone during those long, awful 17 months. During a festival she gets drunk and comes across a drunk Urahara and they end up sleeping together at the Shoten. Ichigo wakes up first, cleans up, and leaves. When Urahara wakes up with a truly horrible hangover he thinks he had another of those dreams, you know, since he’s a dirty old man, and precedes to go back to his lab.
Ichigo after a truly horrible fight with her sperm donor, decides that she’s going to graduate early and move out. This later causes a big fight between the sisters, horrible things are said, and Ichigo leaves in the middle of the night to a hotel.
After this fight she finds out that she’s pregnant. She worries about what the shinigami might do to her baby, she’s not stupid she knows she might have ended up in a cell next to Aizen if she hadn’t lost her powers, and decides she has to leave. It breaks her heart to leave her sisters but they have Goat Face and he would never let anything happen to them, they’re the children he wanted not the weapon he had to have, and her baby only has her. She’s leaves them and letter sneaks into the house to get some of Masaki’s things and leaves.
The letter when found cause mass panic because it could come across as a suicide note so everyone gathers to search for Ichigo but she’s long gone. SS is alerted and everyone loses their minds. It also comes out the Isshin is Ichigo’s father and that just adds to the chaos. Evidently Isshin is Yamamoto’s grandson through Kyoraku. (Yamamoto is Kyoraku’s father but he has his mothers name, not sure why my subconscious didn’t enlighten me on that. Kyoraku and Ukitake are together, have been for centuries, but every once in a while like to add a third to spice things up. The added Isshin’s Shiba mother, who was clan head and Kaien’s grandmother, and nine months later here came Isshin.) Anyway, C46 does something(again my subconscious didn’t enlighten me) and Yamamoto decided that they have outlived their usefulness and they are all killed and C46 disbanded.
Meanwhile Ichigo makes her way to Yokohama, goes through her mother’s things and finds out she was a Quincy. This just reinforces the idea of her leaving and no contact being the right choice. Her pregnancy kicks starts her powers to return and eventually darling baby Chuuya is born.
Ichigo and her spirts are all untied when it comes to protecting the baby and she trains like a maniac and becomes C46’s worst nightmare(if y’know they were still alive).
Things start to get blurry here. I know the Quincy’s come and she kills Yhwach and all his horrible plans come out and many Sternritters turn on his and name her the Quincy Queen(Ishida was not involved yet). She releases Harribel and gets her back to Los Noches and meets up with the other living arrancar. The Quincies(sp?) eventually end up helping rebuild Los Noches as war reparations. Ichigo, the quincies, and the arrancar all eventually end up becoming friends. SS is none the wiser.
SS does eventually get a clue about Yhawch and decide cutting off the 3 world from each other is the best thing to do. So the Kurosakis, Karakura Gang, Shoten Crew, and remaining Visored all end up living in SS so they can eventually face the Quincy threat. As fate would have it the Quincies and Arrancar end up stuck in Hueco Mundo while Ichigo and Chuuya are in the Yokohama. Fast forward a few years and Ichigo is in an accident protecting Chuuya and then Chuuya ends up on the streets. Things proceed as canon from there. Chuuya vaguely remembers Ichigo but not enough to seek her out. Proceeds as canon from there.
Hueco Mundo and SS eventually make contact and everything comes out. Urahara goes nuclear(he’s kind of Yandere here) and immediately goes to find Ichigo and his son. Because they’re his and he refuses to be separated for a moment more that necessary. Yamamoto approves of a marriage between them because he wants all of his family back in SS and everyone else agrees they want her back in SS because they thought she was dead for over a decade. So Ichigo would be forced back regardless of her wishes. They eventually find her while she’s still in her coma but no Chuuya. This sets Urahara off because, his son, his baby, who he never even got the chance to meet is missing. My dream ended with Urahara unleashing himself on Yokohama to find his missing son.
I woke up with the thought that evidently mother and son have the same taste in men and that I wanted to see what overprotective assassin daddy Urahara would do to the people that abandoned or hurt his son. It would be glorious, horribly bloody but glorious. Chuuya deserves good things in life and as much as I love Dazai I’ve always been of the opinion he could do with being out maneuvered sometimes. In this case by Urahara.
I need you to write this out. I need it desperately. This is beyond fantastic I swear to all the gods

Uncollected fragments
Everything I write here is true, but I am writing purely from memory, which of course means it is also not.
What is truth, said jesting Pilate, and would not stay for an answer. (Bacon?)
Truth is the limit of inquiry by an ideal community of inquirers. (Peirce?)
The time the work is set in decides the form, writes Eco. But fragments have no form. What, then, is their relationship to time?
But some sort of form is necessary for intersubjective understanding. (That is why I think daos must be collective.)
Thinking through, by, with, against texts. Constructive. Jung.
The encyclopedic imposes an order; the fragmentary is always unfinished.
Eighteenth century China: Zhang Xuecheng is robbed and loses his manuscripts; he mourns their loss.
Nineteenth century Europe: Thomas Carlyle's draft history of the French Revolution is burned by someone who mistakes it for kindling.
Present time, present place (Lain!): some information is lost.
I have read two different accounts of van Gogh's last words. "The sadness will last forever" and "I want to die like this." The first is the most well attested, coming from Theo van Gogh's letter; the second is found in a biography by two scholars.
See you later.
I open my drafts folder, intending to write, but my whole body aches and I save my magnum opus for another day.
I wake up from a dream that I have to write an essay on Jane Eyre.
I vaguely remember seeing something on the heart of the world. Here, I stand with Nishida. It is ineffable place (basho). But of course there are other options. Wang Bi? Le Guin?
"And I'm trying to hold on to my past; it's been so long that I don't think I'm gonna last." What genre is this? "Energetic dream pop."
Fundamentally, only two types of things have significance in ___ _____ __ _ ___ __: texts and people.
The first thing I see when I wake up is an argument over the significance of Kierkegaard, with mentions of Heidegger and Barthes.
"You are a reliable source of knowledge." Everything has its modes.
"You are the kindest person I have ever met." Everyone has their element; it's easy to be kind when one is bountiful. (Aristotle on magnaminity.)
Citing sources is a responsibility, especially now (in the very fleeting present moment) when it is the easiest differentiator between LLM-generated output from human output. On the other hand, the intellectual freedoms that are lost...
Two memories anchor my life: a cat (B) and a game (S).
Sincerity vs. irony, imitare vs. rittrare, value.
"When later published in book form by Iwanami Shoten, its title was shortened to Kokoro; the rendering of the word "kokoro" itself was also changed from kanji (心) to hiragana (こゝろ)." What is the significance of the change in register? This is why languages are so important (to me). Reading a good literal translation brings me in touch with an unfamiliar heterotopian inner logic. E.g. Frieren, Nabokov on Pushkin.
How to read? Plural or monistic?
Borges's lectures on English literature skip Shakespeare entirely.
1502: Arthur, Prince of Wales dies; 1659: Dara Shikoh dies.
"There are no definitive histories," writes Elijah Wald, in this provocative reassessment of American popular music, "because the past keeps looking different as the present changes." Excellent first sentence for a blurb!
And in the same way, fragments will be constantly reinterpreted. Ergodic literature.
Montaigne's Essays would have continued as long as he would have lived; what's important is the spirit of the work.
Someone's library is a collection of them, not just of books, and the inner logic is lost when the collection is dispersed (Trefethen).
For a long time, I have distrusted the encyclopedic even as I remain fascinated by it.
How do you read the Mahabharata, a work so vast? It depends on what level of fidelity you want. A lesser path, I did it by selectively reading between three translations; the most exacting would be to translate all of it into multiple languages, a path no one has taken, a path no one can take.
But how much can one do from the sidelines? This life so short, the craft so long to learn. The unending pressure of objective culture (Simmel). All the texts and people I keep in my heart.

Why did Japanese Manga highly develop? Because Japanese are very sloppy religiously.(Essay)
Tumblr media
A stinky monkey worshiping a frog impersonating Buddha (Choju-Giga)
The following is an exchange of comment between my blog friend cenecio and me (iirei) about manga.
cenecio: Mr. Morishita, I would like to ask you, why did the field of manga develop in Japan?
This is a question from Mr. Gear and me. Thank you. If you have time, it doesn't matter tomorrow.
iirei: This is a very difficult question. Speaking of my past logs, there is one that deals with bird and beast caricatures,so called”Choju-Giga(鳥獣戯画)”.
We recognize that this picture scroll is one of the oldest manga in Japan. When writing this blog, Isao Takahata clearly saw "frame splitting" about "Shigisan Engi Emaki", and he also referred to the book "Japanese Animation" (was it), which was said to be a pioneer of manga. He made it.
Returning to Choju-Giga, as a famous scene like sumo wrestling of frogs and rabbits, it is especially remarkable in the picture of a fishy monkey shaved worshiping the principal image of a frog, but in other countries the religious main god is likened to a frog. It’s impossible.
Religion is still not really rooted in Japan. But what should be noted here is the idea of parody. The combination of frogs and monkeys is a wonderful parody. These picture scrolls were made from the end of the Heian period to the beginning of Kamakura period, with a religious background in which "Pure Land Buddhism" covered Japan, but the Japanese are sloppy(Charanporan), aren't they? While admiring the Pure Land, he makes fun of it. Of course, Western European countries also had parodies like Rabelais did, but I think they weren't as non-religious as Japan.
I think that this comment alone is not enough to answer this difficult question. If you come up with something again, I'll write it.
Tumblr media
Note: Mr. Takahata(Member of Studio Gibli)’s book, official name "Animation of the 12th Century: Movie-like and Anime-like Things Seen in National Treasure Picture Scrolls" (Tokuma Shoten: 1999).
…………………………………………..
cenecio: Good morning, Mr. Morishita.
I'm sorry to hear from you last night.
> Isao Takahata clearly sees "frame splitting" about "Shigisan Engi Emaki", and this picture scroll is also a pioneer of manga.
This is interesting. How to divide the frames is a big difference between manga and BD, and it seems to be one of the themes that the discussion is enthusiastic about.
I would like to find out about the roots of manga myself.
Thank you very much.
The situation changes depending on where you take the manga overrun (Ransho: 濫觴:the time of the headwaters). I think it is generally from Osamu Tezuka, but there is also a position that it is from Suiho Tagawa's "Norakuro". In my case, I made the argument based on the Heian period bird and beast caricature and Shigisan Engi Emaki(picture Scrolls).
A word of the day: In addition, the representative of the story manga was Osamu Tezuka, and the representative of the gag manga was Fujio Akatsuka. (The Tezuka Award and Akatsuka Award are the gateways for young manga artists in Japan to be held by Shueisha.) Regarding this extremely interesting work, especially "Tensai Bakabon(The genius fool)" the manga artist was not Charamporan(sloppy), but the reader was Charampolan. The creators of gag manga are those who draw their works with bloody efforts, and story manga does not require much tension. In fact, the lifespan of a gag manga artist as an author is shorter than that of a story manga artist.
After the serialization of Tensai Bakabon, Mr. Akatsuka serialized a manga called "B.C. Adam" that "teases" the Bible. I remember that this work was not very popular, but I think it was rather a work that showed Mr. Akatsuka's own charamporan.

you know i think even beyond "because it's a really well-written and hilarious manga" and "it's drawn by takeshi obata, come on," i think one of the biggest reasons i need more people to read show-ha shoten is bc i'm only barely stopping myself from saying "it's the S-A-M-E SYSTEM!!" at every opportunity and nobody will fucking get it

𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒊: *only lasts for one episode where she constantly stalks Adam everywhere since the beginning after mistaking his advances on her instead of another girl, until she died getting hit by a truck while saving him and is revived by her blonde crush out of love (and realization) as the empress of all vampires; afterwards they are dating*
S⨳a⨳n⨳z⨳u⨳: *continues on for the entire series where she becomes an obnoxious fan and develops an obsession with Ronaldo after saving her from a vampire attack, working at Autumn Shoten and made numerous attempts of replacing Fukuma as the editor of Ronasen, breaking into his room at the apartment without permission (which I know it plays for laughs on others), and tries to forcefully steal Ronaldo from Draluc and John for herself*
🄽🄾🅃🄴: I am not defending Maremi's actions back in episode 6 of season one, but I want anyone of you know that at least it occured and stopped at the right time. Also Sanzu being helped by Ronaldo during a vampire attack is established somewhere in untranslated chapters. The question is I have no clue where it was.

Iron Town is a refuge for outcasts and lepers employed to process iron and create firearms, such as hand cannons and matchlock muskets. He then manages to rescue two of the men fallen from the cliff and transports them back through the forest, where he briefly glimpses the Great Forest Spirit.Īshitaka and the survivors arrive at Iron Town, where he is greeted with fascination. Down below, Ashitaka encounters San and the wolves, who rebuff his greeting. Riding one of the wolves is San, a human girl. Nearby, men on a cliffside herd oxen to their home of Iron Town, led by Lady Eboshi, and repel an attack by a wolf pack led by the wolf goddess Moro, whom Eboshi wounds with a gun shot. Heading west, Ashitaka meets Jigo, an opportunistic monk who tells Ashitaka he may find help from the Great Forest Spirit, a deer-like animal god by day and a giant Night Walker by night. The village's wise woman tells Ashitaka that he may find a cure in the western lands that the demon came from, and that he cannot return to his homeland. The villagers discover that the demon was a boar god, corrupted by an iron ball lodged in his body. The curse grants him superhuman strength, but it also causes him pain and will eventually kill him. The last Emishi prince, Ashitaka, kills it before it reaches the village, but it manages to grasp his arm and curse him before its death. In Muromachi Japan, an Emishi village is attacked by a hideous demon. The film greatly increased Ghibli's popularity and influence outside Japan. It was dubbed into English with a script by Neil Gaiman, and initially distributed in North America by Miramax, where it sold well on DVD and video, despite a poor box office performance. It was a critical and commercial blockbuster, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japan of 1997, and also held Japan's box office record for domestic films until 2001's Spirited Away, another Miyazaki film. The film was released in Japan on Jby Toho, and in the United States on October 29, 1999. The term mononoke ( 物の怪), or もののけ, is not a name, but a Japanese word for supernatural, shape-shifting beings that possess people and cause suffering, disease, or death. The story follows a young Emishi prince named Ashitaka, and his involvement in a struggle between the gods of a forest and the humans who consume its resources. Princess Mononoke is set in the late Muromachi period of Japan (approximately 1336 to 1573 CE), but it includes fantasy elements. The film stars the voices of Yōji Matsuda, Yuriko Ishida, Yūko Tanaka, Kaoru Kobayashi, Masahiko Nishimura, Tsunehiko Kamijo, Akihiro Miwa, Mitsuko Mori and Hisaya Morishige. IPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad iPad, iPad Mini 2, iPad Mini 3, iPad Mini 4, 9.Princess Mononoke ( Japanese: もののけ姫, Hepburn: Mononoke- hime) is a 1997 Japanese animated epic historical fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten, Nippon Television Network and Dentsu.

As it seems the picture and the translations for Shoten 6 Tokyo Babylon story has disappeared from the net I’m going to share them.
The translation was done by iamsocool12345 and it’s shared here merely because it’s not available anymore anywhere as far as I know. Should iamsocool12345 ask for me to remove it, I’ll do it.
Now... since I know many people wonder about the last pic in which Seishiro put a ring on Subaru’s finger... well it actually isn’t a single spread picture.
That’s how the scene looked like on the original magazine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see you would have to turn the page to see Seishiro.
Now... I’ve placed all the other picture in order except those last two because it’s nice to see them as a spread page... but remember, in the original they wouldn’t have looked like one.
Tokyo Babylon - Shoten Translation *********************** BABYLON Ancient capital of Mesopotamia. In the 18th century B.C., Hamurabi, ruler of the kingdom of Babylonia, claimed it as such, and the city prospered, as a thriving political and cultural center. In time, however, the people of the city began to grow proud of this prosperity, and challenged God's authority, building a tower called "Babel" that would reach up to Heaven. Unable to forgive this indiscretion, God struck the tower down, and with it, destroyed the common language of the people. People are now doomed to repeat themselves constantly, a mark of their foolish act against God. Woe to Babylon, City that suffered the wrath of God. "He seemed pretty cool, didn't he?" Hokuto muses, sipping happily on Subaru's iced cafe au lait. Subaru isn't quite sure what Hokuto's talking about. He tilts his head. "Who?" "Sei-chan." "Oh. Seishirou-san." Hokuto's already started calling Seishirou "Sei-chan". It took her all of three hours after first meeting him, but then, she's a little more...friendly than most. [1] This is Heinesen [2], in Shinjuku's Kabukichou. [3] Not exactly the first neighborhood you'd recommend to anyone as a nice place to live, but it's still got its fair share of quality apartment complexes. All of them with very good security systems, of course. And our hero is Subaru Sumeragi. He's 163 cm tall [4], 16 years old, and he's just been accepted into his first year at CLAMP Campus Academy's high school. He has one sibling: a twin sister, Hokuto Sumeragi, who's currently lounging on the sofa across from him, with a smile. Like some of you might already know (after reading Shoten 5), Subaru-kun goes to school and "works" at the same time. He's an onmyouji. Lately, his profession has gotten lots of attention from newspapers and magazines, and a lot of people have heard about what onmyouji do. They're well-versed in astronomy and study the calendar very closely, in order to perform fortune tellings, and other special spiritual rituals. In fact, people like Subaru-kun have started to show up everywhere in popular media, lately. [5] It seems like everybody has read "Kujaku-ou" [6] or seen "Teito Monogatari" [7], and they've noticed these characters who have incredible power. Abilities beyond what any normal human being can do. Sumeragi Subaru-kun is one of these onmyouji. As a matter of fact, they're growing increasingly rare in our day. So much so that, if he let it, publicity would completely overwhelm his life. Sumeragi Subaru-kun is an onmyouji. He's adorable, still just a high school student, and he might not seem like the sharpest kid his age, but when it comes to onmyoujutsu [8], he's at the very top of his game. The 13th head of the Sumeragi family. It's a position that claims quite a bit of respect. But with that respect also comes its fair share of difficulties. Subaru-kun keeps a smile on his face, but in a profession this uncommon, it's easy to feel spread thin. His line of work can be tough. And it is work for him; he gets paid for what he does, and because of that, he feels like he can't take on any case half-way. He has to go all out, every single time. Subaru-kun has come up against some pretty unpleasant situations, but he does his best to try not to let sort of thing affect him too much. Which is easier said than done. Sometimes, he can get a little depressed, but we'll leave that for another time. For now, something else entirely is bothering Subaru-kun. Something that has nothing to do with his job...or so he's trying to tell himself. Still, he can't help but wonder if... "Hey, Subaru!" If... "Earth to Subaru! Hello~ooo? Subaru!!!" Subaru looks up suddenly, to find Hokuto hovering over him. "You were thinking again, weren't you? You're always doing that! Getting lost in thought, and shutting yourself off from the rest of the world... And I'd bet money you were just depressing yourself over it, too, whatever it was. Would you cut it out already?" She looks down at him, and... Er, well. Subaru had thought she'd been hovering over him, but it turns out she's just sitting on his lap. "Here. Phone's for you." He hadn't even heard it ring. Subaru thinks she might be right; he really doesn't pay enough attention to what's going on around him, and it could get him into trouble, one of these days. What if someone came into his room uninvited, and he didn't notice? Although he can't really imagine that anyone would want to. A thief, maybe? But it's not like that sort of thing happened very often, anyway, and...- "The phone, I said! Geeze! You're totally impossible!" Oops! There he goes again. He's really got to break that habit... "Who is it?" "Loverboy." "L-Loverboy-san? Who's that?" "You have got to be kidding me." Subaru takes the receiver from Hokuto. "H-Hello? This is Sumeragi." "Hello, there! This is Sakurazuka." "Oh! Seishirou-san!" Hokuto jumps up, spins around, and starts hopping in place excitedly. Energetic would be an understatement. Have you ever in your life seen twins with two more opposite personalities? "I'm sorry that I kept you so long today." "N-No, it's fine! I had fun." "Well, there's something I forgot to give you when I dropped you off at your apartment." "Huh?" "Do you think you might be able to stop by the hospital on your way home from school tomorrow?" "S-Sure..." "Great. Be careful tonight. I know it's been really hot out, lately, but make sure you don't catch a cold from running the air conditioner, okay? [9] Have a good night." "O-Oh, um! Okay! G-good night!" Subaru sits blinking at the cordless in his hand. "So!? What did he say!? Tell me everything!" "Um... He said there's...um, something he wants to give me..." "Presents! Starting in with the fancy gifts already, in order to win over your affections! Ooh, he's good, he's very good!" "I-I really don't think he's trying to 'win over my affections'..." "But what on earth could Sei-chan be thinking!? He knows you're head of the Sumeragi family, and he's the Sakurazukamori!" The Sakurazukamori is part of the Sakurazuka family, another famous omyouji clan, like the Sumeragi. Except...the history of the Sakurazuka family is a little less prestigious, and the Sakurazukamori doesn't exactly make his services known to the public. Supposedly, though, the Sakurazukamori considers himself above ordinary moral restrictions, and buries all of his victims in a grave called the "sakurazuka". [10] Basically, the Sakurazukamori acts as the Sakurazuka family assassin. "We don't know that for sure! The Sakurazuka family is so mysterious that even other onmyouji can't tell the truth from legend, anymore. These days, anyone could be the Sakurazukamori. Just because Seishirou-san's last name is 'Sakurazuka' doesn't necessarily mean anything..." "Well, we know that the current Sakurazukamori is a man! Obaa-chama told us so!" [11] "But that doesn't mean that it's Seishirou-san!" "He didn't exactly deny it, did he?" "He didn't say yes, either!" "Oh, come on, Subaru! What's wrong with you? It'd be so much more interesting if you were head of the Sumeragi and he was the Sakurazukamori!" "...You're crazy..." "You dummy! Don't you realize what you're doing here? Every single day, I turn on the TV, and what do I see? Perestroika, Kuwait, Iran, environmental pollution, water shortages... [12] But you know what? That's all fine, so long as girls like me can still have our fun! But will boys like you let us!? No! Instead, you have to go and ruin everything!" "...If all girls think like you, then I'm a little scared..." "Sorry to make you come out here like this." Seishirou bows low to Subaru from just inside the hospital. Subaru bows back. "But I had some business to attend to in Ikebukuro [13] today, so I stopped in at this little restaurant called Melos [14], and brought us back some tiramisu. Huh? Where's Hokuto-chan?" "Oh, um, she said that Marui [15] was having a bargain sale today..." "Aha. I understand. That definitely takes priority," Seishirou nods vigorously. "Well, let's not stand out here all day. Come on in and tell me how school was. Are you getting used to it?" Subaru follows Seishirou into his examination room, where Seishirou sets out the tiramisu and some tea. "Yeah. There are so many new faces, but... But it's a lot of fun." "Mmm. CLAMP Campus is a good school. Even if they do get a little carried away, from time to time." "Where did you go to school, Seishirou-san?" "Would you like some more tea?" Seishirou changes the topic so smoothly that Subaru figures he must not have heard the question. "S-Sure. Thank you." "Actually, I got this tea from Krishna-san. He went home to India for a wedding, and brought some back to Japan with him. He must have felt very nostalgic, visiting home for the first time in so long." [16] "Have you lived in Tokyo your whole life, Seishirou-san? Or are you..." "What wonderful weather we're having today, hmm?" And then it dawns on Subaru: apparently, Seishirou doesn't want to answer his questions. "So what did you learn about today at school?" "Um. Well, actually, the evil Imonoyama Shopping District Secret Association showed up right in the middle of class, and then the CLAMP Campus Defenders Duklyon came in to chase after them, and things got a little crazy, and that was sort of the end of the lesson, right there." [17] "Ahahahaha! As interesting as ever, then!" Seishirou laughs, long and hard, and Subaru starts to wonder if he really might be the Sakurazukamori, like Hokuto had said. After all, he seems to be avoiding Subaru's questions about his past... For the briefest instant, Subaru feels his heart ache. "What's the matter? Is the cake no good?" "Huh!? Oh! No! I-It's delicious!" "You looked so sad for a second there. Are you sure you're alright?" "I'm fine! It's nothing, really! Honest!" "Hmm. Alright, then. Although I have to admit, it's a little suspicious of you to deny it so strongly." Seishirou laughs again, and reaches to refill Subaru's cup. "Oh, that reminds me! How about we get to what I called you over for, hm?" "O-Okay!" Still smiling, Seishirou reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small box, covered in red velvet. "What's that?" "Open it up and see for yourself." Subaru flips the box open...and freezes. "Th-This is--!" "A ring. The size should be fine, hopefully. I've got a knack for things like that." "Wh-Who are you going to give it to?" "Ahahahaha! Why, you, of course, Subaru-kun!" "W-Wha-! You-! H-! Hold on!" "Don't worry, I don't mean to tie you down with this. It's just that it seems like so many people have been getting married lately, doesn't it? Even at Iserlohn and Heinesen [18], I feel like I know at least 10 couples who've decided to tie the knot." "Y-Yeah, I've been invited to a few of them too, but..." "Veterinary hospitals might be hospitals, but they're still businesses! I started worrying that, one day, I might not be able to afford a ring anymore. So I went out and bought this for you yesterday, while I know for certain that I've got the money to." "But I can't accept this! It's so expensive!" "You won't take it because it's expensive, or because you don't want to?" "What?" "Because it really wasn't expensive it all, Subaru-kun. You believe me, don't you?" "Well, I do...-" "Then you'll take it!" "Seishirou-san!" "I promise I'll do everything I can to give you the wedding you deserve. And I'll be a devoted husband, day in and day out! You'll look after me, won't you, Subaru-kun?" Looks like Subaru-kun doesn't have much of a say this time around! Don't worry, Subaru-kun! We're sure he'll make an honest bride out of you, soon! *laugh* *********************** [1] A cursory note I'd rather ignore, but obviously, "chan" indicates a certain closeness that most people don't really feel they've achieved in 3 hours. [2] Heinesen is a tricky one. It's a German name, but I found out that it was also used as a location in an '80s manga called Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (in English, Legend of the Galactic Heroes), which is where CLAMP probably lifted it from. I think they mean it here to serve as the fictional building/complex that Subaru and Hokuto are living in. [3] Like the text tells us, Kabukichou in Tokyo's Shinjuku district is...lively. It's well-known for being active at night, with its fair share of restaurants, love hotels, bars, etc. It wouldn't exactly be my first choice if I were looking for a place to live, either, but in with some of the seedier stuff are some really classy clubs and restaurants. [4] 5'4", for those of you as metrically challenged as I am. [5] Actually, Japan really did see a sort of pop-occult boom in the '90s. 1999 was coming up, for one, and young people especially started to really get into stuff like that. Think of the fortune telling and matchmaking and apocalypse fear that we see in Tokyo Babylon. [6] Late '80s/early '90s manga (translates to Peacock King), with gods and demons and magic spells, and exorcisms, and all that sort of thing. [7] '70s novel turned into late '80s/early '90s live action film and anime (translated as Doomed Megalopolis in the US). The main villain is an onmyouji. [8] Onmyoujutsu is onmyouji magic, or "yin-yang magic". [9] Okay. Korea is notorious for this sort of thing, and I met a girl from Brazil who believed it. I don't think I've come across any Americans who really believe this, but I could be wrong. Anyway, the idea is that an AC or fan, especially if left on overnight in a room that you're sleeping in, can make you sick. I... I mean, maybe if you set your AC to record low temperatures? I only make a note here since reading that line in English out of nowhere like that would probably make me think Seishirou's even stranger than I'd imagined. [10] Literally, "cherry blossom grave". [11] "Grandma", but I don't feel comfortable translating it as such, since the "chama" is distinctive. Think "chan" + "sama". Subaru simply uses "obaa-chan". And everyone in English has their own cute grandmother diminutive, anyway. [12] As in depressing early '90s news. Perestroika refers to Gorbachev's doomed economic reforms, then we've got the Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm, the hole in the ozone layer, etc. [13] Big, busy commercial district in Tokyo. Sunshine 60's there. Lots of department stores and activity. [14] "Melos" might be the name of a real restaurant somewhere, but probably not in this case. If anything, I'd say CLAMP's throwing a quick nod to Hashire Melos! (Run, Melos!), an '80s anime movie, remade in the early '90s. [15] Marui's a big, famous department store, well-known for women's fashion. The logo for the store reads "OIOI", but it's pronounced "marui"..."maru" for "zero" and "i" for "one". [16] Errr. I'm pretty sure Seishirou's referring to Krishna, the CLAMP character who appears in some of their earlier stuff. He works at CLAMP Campus as a professor, I believe, and looks pretty much like Ashura-ou? I think? If you've got any more info, let me know! [18] Iserlohn seems to be another German name/location in Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu. See note #2.
