Despite this being your first time on the road you were enjoying it, a lot. Granted, this new lifestyle takes a lot of getting used to, the late get ups, late nights, partying and drinking. You feel like you’ve missed out on a lot when it comes to enjoying yourself, you’ve always been too focused on work, but before that was your education. You felt like you owed it to yourself.

You remember the day when your best friend called you one afternoon…

*the phone rang out in the office and you answered. “Hello this is y/n spea…” before you even got chance to finish your sentence, your best friend Jerry was on the other end. “Hey, look y/n, you know how I work for Elvis and all?” “Yes, what’s wrong, everything okay?” You questioned carefully. There was a break in him speaking, you could tell whatever he was about to say was somewhat making him nervous. A small smile started to form on your lips. “Well, I was wondering if you would like to come join us on the road, only thing is, it’s six months long…? What’d you say? I’d love to have you there?” Now you were the nervous one, you would love to, god, you’d jump at the opportunity, to be with your best friend and to meet THE Elvis Presley, in the flesh, but your work, home and parents came flooding to you. “Hello y/n, you still there? What you thinkin?” Jerry said breaking the silence, also breaking you from your spiralling thoughts. “Aw what the hell hey, people always say I need to ‘lighten’ up’. This place will fall apart without me anyways, when do we leave!?”

With that being said, the two of yous sorted all the arrangements out and hung the phone up. The rest of the working day couldn’t come to an end fast enough if it tried, once the clock struck 5pm, you were gone. You had just over an hour to get six months worth of your belongings into a few suitcases, which you initially thought it was impossible to do so, but you managed.

With a knock on the door, you hurriedly unlocked it and let Jerry in wrapping him in a massive hug, squeezing your arms around his neck tight. Your nerves were getting the better of you, but it was all excitement, no doubt in sight, after all, you needed to let your hair down and have some fun, you deserve it. “Ready to go?” Jerry asked with a huge smile pulling at his face. You nodded quickly and picked as many bags up as you can. “Jesus y/n, you’d think you were going away for months with all these bags…” Jerry said sarcastically whilst looking at you with knowing eyes.*

With that thought you were snapped back to the land of the living when Jerry came and stood on the outside balcony with you, nudging you with his elbow against yours. “Hello earth to y/n… anyone home?” “Yes, hey jer, I’m fine, just reminiscing… apparently. Best decision I made!” You both giggled to yourselves overlooking the Las Vegas skyline, it was so pretty, all the twinkling lights, the noises from down below. It was safe to say it was completely different from home.

“Hey y/n we’ve all got to go get ready for another show but how do you fancy meeting us at the after party at EP’s suite, you know actually showing up to a party every once in a while won’t hurt you yeno…” Jerry taunted as he said this. “Sure, I don’t see why not, I’ll see you there then!” And with that being said Jerry was called away to help out kissing you on the cheek on the way past.

Since you were going to the after party you had plenty of time to kill, two shows worth of time, so you went shopping for a new outfit! It was the only right thing to do, right?! After strolling throughout all the shops in Las Vegas’, you finally found this cute little dress shop. It varied from long dresses, short ones, long sleeved or short, off the shoulders, even frilly. You name it, they were all there. You stumbled into the changing rooms with as many different outfits you could carry, trying each one on to make sure they suited you. What felt like hours you finally decided to settle on this tight fitted red off one of the shoulder strapped dress. You felt confident in it. You placed the unwanted dresses over to where you found them and wandered over to the till to make the payment. “Is there anything else I can get you today?” The employee asked cheerily. “No, that’s it tha… actually yeno that little black blazer, I’ll have that too please.”

Back at your hotel room you decide to get ahead of the time and start getting ready for the after party. After your shower you stood in your bathroom, thinking about your outfit, the after party, and of course Elvis Presley. You’ve been to one of his after parties before so you knew what was going to happen, but he has never spoke to you, he’s seen you but that’s as far as it goes.

You shake the silly thoughts out of your head, you’ve been a fan of Elvis’ your whole life, his music, his films, everything. You’ve always had a soft spot for him, like every other girl out there. Except the only difference is that you get to go to the parties that he hosts. Plus, your here with your best friend. Not to have a moment over his boss.

You done your hair and make up just the way you like it, your hair loosely curled and a face of make up, to finish the look, you had a smokey black eye shadow and eyeliner situation to match your blazer and heels. Some blonde strands of your hair fell in front of your face, to be honest, you never go all out like this so looking in the mirror at yourself was strange.

“Y/n, are you ready?” Jerry said casually just letting himself into your hotel room, forgetting that he had helped himself to a copy of your room key. “Good job isn’t it eh Jer! When people like yourselves just come barging right in.” You say laughing at him. He stops dead in his tracks and falls silent, “you look stunning y/n, seriously.” You blush at this but can’t help but say “thank you Jer, you ain’t too bad looking yourself.” “Come on, let’s go, otherwise we’ll be the last ones to join… again.”

When the lift doors open to the top floor, you could instantly hear the music, laughing, talking. Jerry was probably right, we are the last ones to join again. You and Jerry entered the suite together but parted ways soon afterwards, leaving you to mingle and get to know anyone or even everyone. You learnt that there was another person in Elvis’ mafia named Charlie, he seemed lovely but was already way beyond tipsy and had already wanted to start to get to know you. Asking questions like how you know Jerry, how long, where you’re from.

And that was the moment that Elvis decided to get to know you…

While in mid sentence, Charlie stopped and started to rub the back of his head. Someone had threw something at him. While turning round to see who could be the culprit, you and Charlie were met by his oceanic blue eyes and that gorgeous lopped sided smile. “Will you leave the lil darlin’ alone Charlie, you’ve been harassing her for the past hour.” Said Elvis as he slowly strides over to you and Charlie. “She knows Jerry, been friends with him for years… grew up in the same home town and all…” he trailed off “and she’s really pretty” this you blushed at and smiled gently. “I know this Charlie, and any friend of Jerry’s is a friend of mine too. She is downright gorgeous, not just pretty.” Elvis looked at you while saying the second half of his sentence. Looking you up and down, he had that twinkle in his eyes. “Now Charlie, go do us all a favour will ya and go and find someone else to talk to…”

You couldn’t quite get over the power that he had over his people, how they all listened to him, respected him. They all respected each other. This left you standing in place with Elvis, watching Charlie walk away. “Now, let’s go get you another drink shall we?” holding his hand out for you to grab, leading you to the bar. This was surreal for you, you had dreamed this day a hundred times over, to be in the same room as Elvis Presley, but for him to be talking to you, getting you a drink, it was definitely the icing on the cake.

“So, now you have your drink, what is your name honey and how do you know Jerry?” He asked “Well, my name is y/n and I’ve been Jerry’s friend since we were children. We’ve always been real close, no secrets, nothing. But that’s all we are friends. And when he asked me to come on the road with him, and yourself of course, I couldn’t say no. I’m like ur bigg…” you had realised that you have just been ranting your whole life story to Elvis. You were so embarrassed that your cheeks had started to become the same colour as your dress and you couldn’t hold eye contact with him. But when you did, you noticed he was fully into what you were saying, hanging of every last word you said and he was wearing his trademark looped sided grin that was in full effect at this point. “Aw nah, come on now, don’t stop there, we were getting to the good stuff.” He said jokingly. “Well… yes I’ve been a fan of yours for years. Seeing you is unbelievable.” “In a good way, I hope.” He cuts you off “yes of course it’s a good thing!”

There was this silence between the both of you, you were you just stood there taking one another in, the music from the party was still booming but it felt like yous were the only two in the suite. It was at this moment that he was realising that he liked you, like really liked you. He needed to know the whole story about you.

“I’ll tell ya what. Why don’t I get you some tickets to my next show tomorrow and then you can join me up here again and we can get to know each other some more, how about that darlin’?”

You couldn’t quite get over who you was talking to and what he was saying to you but without hesitation you agreed to everything. “That sounds amazing Mr Presley! I’ll see you tomorrow then, I best go and find Jerry and get back to my room, got a full day tomorrow.” You say with a knowing look in your eyes and a cheeky smile. “Please, call me Elvis. I’ll see you tomorrow y/n, good night!”

As you exited the suite with Jerry, little did you know that Elvis had watched you leave, eyeing you up and down from behind. It was at this moment that he knew he was in trouble and was falling deep for you. He’d get you to be his girl eventually. Slowly but surely…

Everything wrong with... Ep 3 - Pretty Woman

*sigh* *big sigh*.  I’m back here giving you another politically charged review of a film I like to call a femmeçade:

Femmeçade /fɛm//fəˈsɑːd/ noun noun: femmeçade; plural noun: femmeçades; 1. A genre of films directed by men that forefront yet misinterpret the female narrative and representation on screen. "Pretty Woman is the worst femmeçade of them all in the way it depicts women as the lesser gender"  (definition by yours truly).

I have to say, I have never felt more compelled, more angry in my entire life to write such a review and tear this film down until there is nothing left but the underlining, prominent misogynistic aspects of this film. I am talking about the 1990s classic, Pretty Woman starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. Now a musical, the film has survived three waves of feminism (if you count MeToo), and yet is still available to access for our entertainment. Even though censorship is less common in the Western World, the only good thing about watching Pretty Woman would be to see how vile and unacceptable it is in the eyes of our modern and ever changing society. It truly brought tears of anger to my eyes to watch such a film and see how its lead was shoved into the spotlight for a round or two of humiliation and prodding by the fingers and eyes of the male gaze. There is A LOT to go through here, so grab a snack and buckle in as I put Pretty Woman to shame.

Let's just start with the title itself Pretty Woman, a pretty lazy title for a film if you ask me. I understand it does what it says on the tin, like any title should, however the irksome thing about the film and title is what it’s selling. The lust and beauty of Julia Roberts as opposed to her character or story for that matter. Stood alongside Richard Gere in thigh high boots with her legs for days, months and years on show. We get it, Julia Roberts is a beauty, but why does a film have to focus on that sole part of her? By doing this it creates the idea that it’s her only asset and BOY does this film do a good job at reminding us just that. They’ve got the man’s vote and supposedly the woman’s seeing as the story is about them or who they’d like to be. WRONG, seeing as the crew behind Pretty Women were mostly men themselves. The writers, cinematographer, director, producers, best boys and gaffers, you name it. So who was this film for if it wasn’t to satisfy at least it's mostly male crew members?

Male satisfaction are the appropriate words to use when we are introduced to our leading lady in close up shots of her bra and knickers. Vivian is played by the highly talented and ordained Julia Roberts. Ever since seeing Erin Brodkovich which bagged her an Oscar in 2001, I’ve been in love with her spirit and confidence on screen. As we all know she is certainly one of Hollywood’s shiniest stars, up there with the elites like Meryl Streep, Viola Davis and Angelina Jolie. Why she decided to sign onto such a film, I would hate to speculate seeing as Feminism was more of a dirty secret than a positive movement back in the 1990s. Many (mostly men, though women too, especially those in the film business) would accuse the movement of threatening the comfortability and fun out of life’s pleasures, like women wearing makeup, dresses and being groped at office parties (sarcasm). However, as we now know, feminism isn’t the demon that the 1990s tried to make it out to be and I hope that Julia Roberts was unaware of feminism back then rather than being a strong opposer of it. 

Vivian Ward is a hooker living and working on the streets of LA, the city of dreams as some may brandish it. She lives with her roommate Kit (Laura San Giacomo) and between them they spend their nights trying to scrape enough money for their rent. I’m glad that sex work isn’t as scrutinised as it was back then and another arresting aspect of Pretty Woman is the way it depicts the so called “atrocities” of being a sex worker. The propriety and haughtiness of those who laid eyes upon Kit or Vivian was degrading and dehumanising, simply because they choose to lead a different lifestyle to those around them. It seemed so archaic, almost Victorian like the way people ogled and gazed upon Vivian at the hotel where she was taken in by her male counterpart. Pretty Woman again proves itself to be an anti-feminsit horror show for shaming women on choosing what to do with their own bodies and how they dress. We need to cut this BS out of society ASAP that women dress in certain ways to attract the attention of the opposite sex. Clothes are a form of expression and 9 times out of 10, that expression hasn’t anything to do with wanting to be leered at in public. Enough with the victim shaming as well; asking women what they wore when they were sexually assaulted. Instead let's ask what the attackers were THINKING when they decided to prey on an innocent victim....

One night whilst Vivan is looking for clients, she meets the so called delectable and mouth droppingly handsome male lead that is Edward Lewis, played by Richard Gere. I didn’t get the hype at all as I felt Vivan to have enough personality and lust for life to fill both of her and Richard Gere’s character. Edward Lewis was wooden, stern and boring, and despite this, Vivian seems to see more in him beyond her usual hookups. That’s another irritating thing about Pretty Woman. Edward Lewis didn’t have to do FUCK ALL to prove his love or worthiness in the life of Vivian. 

He didn’t have to (nor did) change one thing about himself throughout the entire film and that’s not only extremely sexist, but shit filmmaking. Did the writer of completely forget or give up on Edward Lewis’ character arc whilst he was too busy making drooling over Vivian? All Edward Lewis had to do was wave his card around and POOF Vivian was at his knees. No wonder the 1990s shamed feminists because this is the exact sort of crap they were trying to prevent from happening on screen. It may seem like fun and games when Edward Lewis tells Vivian to go shopping, buy herself a new dress for dinner, but in reality this is just a fresh case of misogyny, served up with a side of degradation and bigotry for dessert. 

Edward Lewis goes as far to hire Vivian for the week as his...escort? His actual motive isn’t known and we are left as an audience to conclude that it’s because she’s pretty. Again, selling the film title through and through and deminishing the worth of women with each scene. Vivian is never actually asked what she wants, nor do we get to know her seeing as Edward’s inflated ego and wallet covers up most of the screen time whilst watching this film. If you didn’t think this film could get any more horrific is the age gap between Julia Roberts and Richard Gere at the time of filming, to which Roberts was 22 and Gere, 40.

One moment in particular that proved this film to have zero substance to it, is when Vivian eventually gets down on Edward and to my absolute horror, her bra strap is INCREDIBLY and shockingly inauthentically loose. Like falling off loose. Not one woman in the world who chooses to wear a bra; not in China, India, Pakistan, the U.S, Ukraine, Hooker, doctor, astronaut, teacher, hairdresser or not would ever EVER wear their bra strap so loose. An impractical and uncomfortable choice, this tiny infinitesimal yet significant part of this film showed that this film doesn’t care or know how to show accurate female representation on screen and goes against any sense of providing women with strong characters they can use as role models. And all from one bra strap. 

The shopping and transformation part to this film had to be the big red thumb that stood out the most from the eternity of this film as AGAIN for the fifteenth time this film has proved itself to be in favour of entertaining those who like to ogle at Vivian as opposed to getting to know her. Edward thrusts his card at her once again (without giving her much choice, a common behavioural pattern associated with sociopaths and abusers) and she goes to Rodeo Drive to essentially pretty herself up for him so that Edward isn’t judged by those he introduces Vivian to. 

When Vivian had attempted to go shopping alone on Rodeo Drive in her casual attire, the female employees of one of the stores behaved abominably towards her, classing her as someone who didn’t have the means or appearance to shop in such a place. This film just got even worse as not only do we have the opposite gender dictating the appearance of women, we’re having our own sisters do the same whilst investing in the patriarchal narrative of the way women should be seen in public. At this point you may think I’m going crazy and repeating myself, of which I am doing both, however once you’ve fully taken the time to wake up and smell the patriarchy’s cup of coffee, there’s no turning back. These details become smoke signals that turn into epiphanies and realisations that have you questioning is this really okay? And a Pretty Woman is NOT okay.

Once Vivian has had her transformation (so kindly afforded by the dominant Edward Lewis) she seemingly begins to enjoy her new life as a piece on the side, until she is presented with Edward’s lawyer, Philip Stuckley.

So here’s what we have so far on our checklist of misogyny and anti-feminsit motifs to Pretty Women

A poster and title created in the eye of the male gaze CHECK

A female character whose worth is based on her desirability and propriety CHECK

A mediocre white man who doesn’t progress and gets his way through charm, money and power CHECK

Women who take unkindly to other women because they don’t fit the normalised standards of the patriarchy CHECK

Shaming women for their dress sense and career choices CHECK

Lack of women in general, most of which don’t speak throughout the film CHECK

The list could go on but another motif to add to the list from this film that acts as big shiny wrecking ball that smashes up feminism and leaves its values in the dust is sexual assault. Or attempted sexual assault at that, as when we see Phillip Stuckley’s first interaction with Vivian he says right out that he knows she’s a hooker, whilst running the edge of his sunglasses down Vivian’s arm and suggesting they get together after Edward’s demise back to wherever he came from. EW, this was one of the many moments of the film where I had to swallow my vomit. Phillip attempts to rape Vivian back at Edward’s penthouse suite, when luckily Edward comes in to stop it happening, which was the most decent thing he did the entire film. Edward’s lawyer represented a hoard of men that existed back then and now who feel entitled to a woman’s body, hooker or not. Even though Pretty Woman had dug itself a big enough hole, by the time I got to this part of the film I had been sold on the idea that this film is completely out of line with women’s liberation and empowerment. It’s just one big game to prod and poke at women, seeing how far they can go, which in itself is a metaphor for sexual assault. 

I’ll wrap up on the lack of diversity in Pretty Women. Because the world affords white men and women more luxuries and privileges than people of colour, they were at the forefront of this story whilst black and asian minorities were put in the background as butlers, maids and chauffeurs. It makes me so angry that on top of being a whirlwind of misogyny and sexism that such a film would have the audacity to misrepresent minorities entirely and highlight their so called use as servicing white people. IT. IS. GETTING. OLD.

Hopefully you’ve made it to the end of this “review” (kinda) and seen the damaging implications such a film has on our society. On reading Feminists Don’t Wear Pink and Other Lies curated by Scareltt Curtis, I read that “Books and things reflect what’s happening in the world, Hollywood movies DICTATE IT and MOULD what people think”. 

You may think movies don’t matter or a film of the 1990s doesn’t matter, but if we are to learn from our mistakes and progress our movements, we must unpick the past and see it for how it was. Movies are our culture, our representation of what we’ve learnt or seen in the world. I don’t want to see women as sexual objects without their permission. I don’t want to see them being moulded by the patriarchy or by women who support it. I don't want to see women only good enough to be hookers, wives or mistresses. I want women to be the strongest versions of themselves and for films to buckle up and show that shit on screen.

Pretty Woman can kiss my ass and if it’s a film you like in  unlike it. Pronto.

Jiw and Sun are dating now but the remaining point of contention is how much Horny Ghost just wants them to sleep together instead of getting to know each other to which Sun thinks “Jiw do u only want me for my body 😔?”

I can't believe that Lieutenant Murder's tragic backstory is that he was an orphan oh my god. Adoption is normal!! Murder is not!!

Sous Chef Rain is yelling at the restaurant staff bc of forgetting his birthday, bc he is, truly, a perennial pain in the ass

Sun and Kaopoon!Jiw seem like they're finally ready to have sex (they've talked out their feelings and are going away together) but there are FIVE MORE EPS and the murder stuff still lingers so I wonder what other madness this show will unleash on me

Oh how the tables have turned now Kaopoon is the one too in love with Sun too have sex (bc she will go to the afterlife if she does -- But if she doesn't she'll be an evil spirit so... stuck between a rock and hard-on) 

I have been suspecting for a while tho that the sex will not change anything. She will probably have to solve her murder to pass on

Against Kaopoon's credit, she has not informed Jiw that their relationship has progressed this much. She's just like "yeah things are normal" bc she wants to spend as much time with Sun while she has the chance

Win and Kaopoon!Jiw are just being good bros and Sun, in tandem with the sex-back-and-forth, is jealous of their dynamic

Kaopoon has begun to solve her own murder!!! Unfortunately the first thing she did was point out inconsistent evidence to Lieutenant Parin, who extremely Murdered Her

I feel so happy for Jiw when she gets to experience normal boyfriend moments with Sun like these cheesy matching necklaces. <3 Why does Jiw's life have to be so complicated?

Kaopoon is... spiritually breaking up with Jiw, so she can end the messiness of her involvement with Sun

Ehkjehrrk Jiw is back to living her own life and a spirit just tried to grab at her and she just whacked their hand off and said, "Don't bother me now!" so she could keep cooking, love that for her

The employee-boss affair's out of the bag!!

They also keep cutting to Lieutenant Murder with his knife ready to go after Jiw for Knowing Too Much kjhgkhgjh so I guess the last four-and-a-half eps will dedicated to crime-fighting

Auntie Pu is kind of my favourite character on this show bc she goes from Ghost Nemesis to Ghost Mom all while having Sun's mom as her BFF and Sugar Mama

Hahahaha all the other restaurant staff (minus Win, who is chill) are sucking up to Jiw now bc she's dating Sun

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Jiw felt guilty about dating Sun when half the things he loves are things that Kaopoon did and now the Horny Ghost is out of the bag

I can only assume, bc he thinks she's bipolar, he will assume this is product of a hallucination

Reservations on the commentary on bipolar disorder aside, what DO u do when the person you love tells you that they can see ghosts and key relationship moments you had together were the product of them being possessed by a ghost

Sun now believes in ghosts but he's very upset about the romantic implications of this knowledge

OK, I’m back for Hot Takes: Part 2. 

First, just a few stray things I forgot last time:

I’m sure Adaine is enjoying having bested Aelwen (yeah,spelling #3 guys) in the moment but I can’t imagine she’s gonna enjoy all these nerds making cow eyes at her if her time in the AV office is any indication. Though, to be fair, these nerds could have more game.

“OOPS BITCH.” Siobhan with the awesome episode enders back to back.

Anyone who saw Fabian jump on the Hangman, make a lap while on fire, and then come back, still on fire, was probably like, “Classic Fabian.” I wouldn’t even question it. Very on brand. 

Did y’all notice that at a certain point of the fight, everyone clearly went “Game Face” and started playing to win? Like they were joking a lot less and getting all quiet. I was almost holding my breath for them at points. I am convinced they were all having war flashbacks to the first fight. I know I was. 

OK, on to new business!

I think I’m on record as saying that combat is my least fave part of RPGs.You’re spending a lot of time IRL to cover relatively small amounts of time in story and I especially dislike RPGs that use initiative based fighting systems (which is most of them I think) because then you end up with situations like in this ep where Siobhan kept  wanting to attack Aelwen but she couldn’t react when it would make sense for her to do so because she rolled low on initiative. And it’s where most of the rules of the game are and it can get nitty gritty when I prefer to loose, sandbox-y elements of an RPG.

I want to also reiterate that I think Brennan does a fantastic job of making the combat fun to watch by having inventive fight themes and the rest of the cast is fun no matter what.

That being said, I far and away prefer the story episodes to the combat ones and the entire ep I was like, “OK, but then I’m gonna have to wait a whole week for the conversation that happens after this fight,” WHICH IS THE PART YOU WANT TO SEE OBVIOUSLY.

So I am also more looking forward to the aftermath of the fight than I was the fight itself (although the little bit we got of Adaine getting to finally beat Aelwen was great). Here’s a shot list of things I want addressed/am looking forward to.

What exactly is Aelwen’s part in this? Mastermind? Doubt it. Pawn? Maybe. Being magically manipulated? I mean, possible but I kinda hope she’s just Like This. Anyway, if everything is going to end up dovetailing together (like these stories usually do) and Aelwen is a part of the Palimpsest conspiracy which was part of the Harvestmen’s attempted hit on Kristen which was part of the effort to start a war I’m curious about what reason Aelwen would have to want a war. Like, is that conducive to her lifestyle? Does she know about the war thing specifically or does she just know that s/t shady is happening and if she doesn’t ask too many questions, she’s in the clear? Brennan, fighting slime monsters is great but I have story questions. 

They basically have Aelwen dead to rights on this, but I wonder how she’s gonna play this. She doesn’t strike me as the spill guts immediately type. And she should be smart enough to play the diplomatic immunity card. But I hope we at least get some info out of her. 

Man I hope Riz’s mom gets to arrest her. Which would lead to Mr. Abernant yelling at her which would lead to Adaine yelling at him which she should more because it’s great.

 If Fabian lays low, he’s probably gonna get away with the whole kissing Adaine’s sister thing. She really did not care AT ALL compared to how pissed she was at Aelwen, even before she started actively trying to kill them. On the other hand, she could just be prioritizing and Fabian’s still in for it a, “What the hell, man?” Even if she’s not actively mad at him, this won’t be a point in his favor if he ever decides to make a move on her in the future (which it looked like he might).

I wonder how much, if anything, Mr. Abernant knows about Aelwn’s extracurricular activities. Because either he doesn’t know what she’s up to or he does but he’s in denial and/or protecting the family name. I wouldn’t even be asking the question except for that clip of  him being all, “You can’t jail a diplomat’s daughter!” Although, wouldn’t it be wild if it turned out he was talking about Adaine instead of Aelwen there?

And what’s up with Aelwen and Ostentasia? What did she know? What was she helping her with? Did Aelwen have this whole party set up just to get a good chance to snatch her? 

Y’all, there are 4 episodes left. FOUR. We’re getting close to the endgame. There’s not a lot of time to introduce a new set of antagonists, you know? So I feel like next ep has to drop some pretty major info bombs. Especially since we still haven’t addressed all the weird crap Adaine found in her sister’s room. See, the conversation right after the fight! That’s where the magic happens. 

Riz’s dad! I’ve been waiting for this to go down since the graveyard ep and it looks like it finally will! In the promo, Riz says, “Hey Mom. I know about dad.” Which is kinda throwing me for a loop because either that means he doesn’t know exactly how his dad died and Adaine tells him or (the more intriguing option) something even wilder went down which Sklonda is keeping from him and Riz is about to have a storm coming.

“Detect maiden.” MMM ominous. So, is this an classic maiden sacrifice for big spell thing we’re leading up to?

KVX? Ominous again. 

I’ve been meaning to say this. Wasn’t it established in E1 that the setting of FH is this weird little area of the world that happens to look like a modern irl suburb, and the rest of the world is like a normal DnD setting? I didn’t think that would end up mattering since the story has so far been confined to the immediate area but if war ends up happening, it could factor in. 

Also, Adaine finally read that book on Aguefort which raised a lot of questions and suggested time travel might become a factor at some point? Which would be WILD. Imagine Back to the Future but instead of Marty it’s Fig. The timeline would be in shambles.

Brennan keeps mentioning this Nightmare King person and I’ve been keeping that in the back of my head all season, waiting for it to pop up because I refuse to be blindsighted.

And, speaking of, that ice cream later wish is still in play. Don’t think I’ve forgotten.

So yeah! Next episode should drop some big story bombs and I’m SUPER pumped. Lemme know if I missed anything you wanted to hear about.

DS9: Shakaar

HMMMMMMMMM! >:T

I don’t see why this episode even needed to be made. It’s premise makes no sense: Bajor’s a Federation protectorate; why couldn’t they just replicate and construct more soil reclamators? I was also under the impression that the Fed was working closely with the Bajoran on economic and environmental reconstruction projects(Progress from S1), so why wouldn’t there be a Fed Program already in place dealing with detoxifying soils fouled by the Cardassians? Convenient writing like this is one of 90s Trek’s persistent problems :T

Idk if I buy that Kira would go along with Winn’s plan, either. And she DEFINITELY wouldn’t find Winn’s little speech about Bareil, where she basically says “Bareil never wanted recognition for his good works so why should he get it?”(essentially casting her hogging of the glory as an admission that SHE only ever does beneficial things to get rewarded for them), either convincing or placating; if anything it’d only make Kira more furious.

Then there’s Kai Winn’s appointment to First Minister. It comes across as another example of convenient writing to me; a way of injecting tension into an ep and making her a bigger threat, rather than approaching Bajoran politics more naturally and seriously. Which isn’t surprising considering that the writers couldn’t even settle on what to call the secular government(according to Memory Alpha, it had at least 6 names over the course of the series). By the use of “appointed” I’m assuming either that the First Minister is elected by the two legislatures(Vedek’s Assembly and Council of Ministers), or that temporary replacements are selected by one or both of the leges to fill out terms vacated by death. I’m assuming it’s the later, because Kira later talks about “no one opposing her in next month’s elections”, which seems to imply First Ministers are elected publicly. And it raises other questions, too. Why are members of the Vedek’s Assembly allowed to be elected to the Council of Ministers but not vice-versa? Why, if Winn’s base is revanchist conservatives, would striking a peace-treaty with the Cardassians help her position(that’s not entirely unbelievable of course, given the complete lack of integrity among political “conservatives” on Earth, but I seriously doubt the writers were trying to make a realist point like that here)?

And the thing is, given the importance in domestic and foreign affairs they’ve already granted to the Vedek’s Assembly and Kai in previous eps, it’s totally unnecessary to have her be appointed First Minister in the first place. They could have just as easily had Winn involved in this issue purely as Kai, using her influence and official power to pressure and persecute Shakaar and the farmers he leads, and it wouldn’t have materially changed the plot. 

The ep also continues DS9′s fast and loose treatment of Kira’s position. It’s true that Winn comes to her to exploit her personal connection to Shakaar, but the first thing Shakaar does when she arrives is comment on the importance of her position on DS9. If her post is important in Bajoran politics, then why would Sisko know about the First Minister’s death before her(easy enough to resolve; she’s at the temple praying when she gets the news, they could have simply made it something that just happened in the last 30 mins or so and change the “Winn’s been appointed” message to “Winn’s in the lead”. But they don’t bother, of course)? If it’s important, then why wouldn’t Winn be courting her public support? And, if Kira’s current position is important, and she got it on the basis of her actions during the Occupation, then wouldn’t Shakaar, himself -the leader or her cell- be an even more influential figure(even if only culturally and symbolically since he chose not to go into a military or political life after the Occupation ended)? And if Shakaar was influential, wouldn’t that restrict Winn’s ability to do arrogant things like sending officers to arrest him?? Which, given how he basically wins the election the instant he announces his candidacy, the episode seems to imply he is??? So, again, just really confused writing when it comes to politics, which is unfortunately common for the early seasons of this series.

BUT, overall I liked the episode. I kinda wish O’Brien’s throwing his shoulder out had been a ploy to con Quark and use the latinum won for some noble purpose, rather than playing it straight like the ep did, though.

AF85: ハイパーオリンピック (DIAMOND EDITION) (2018)

Reviewed format: Limited Edition extended C35 Cassette tape EP on GENOT CENTRE / TOBAGO TRACKS

Today I'm back again already with a next part of my Sonic Picks series. The pick of today is this sweet extended C35 Cassette tape EP by AF85 titled ハイパーオリンピック (DIAMOND EDITION), released as a co-release between GENOT CENTRE and TOBAGO TRACKS in 2018. This extended version of the ハイパーオリンピック EP features 5 additional remixes of the EP to the original 6 track EP. The Limited Edition extended C35 Cassette tape EP comes packaged in a clear norelco case with some rather fancy details to it. First of all, the front of the case features a shiny blue diamond sticker put between the words DIAMOND EDITION, the title ハイパーオリンピック and artist name AF85 feature on the spine and the back of the case, on the short side of the j-card you can find label logos, EP credits, description and a link. Inside the case you can find the C35 Cassette tape itself which has this sweet blue-tinted clear shell with blue glitters inside, a red shiny diamond sticker marks side A, while side B is unmarked. Behind this is a download card and the tracklist is listed on the inside of the j-card.

Now, onto the music contained on the Cassette tape itself. ハイパーオリンピック (DIAMOND EDITION) is quite a quickly moving 35 minute EP, with none of the original tracks on side A being longer than 2 minutes and some of the remixes also being relatively short. But this is the kind of music that even with the miniature style of the compositions still sounds pretty dense, surreal and trippy. Side A kicks off with the original EP tracks. First we have DRI, an atmospheric Ambient piece with hints of New Age music but carrying a bit of a Vaporwave aesthetic too (this is also hinted in the Vaporwave style packaging design). Washes of clear sea like waves of synths accompany a simple 80's styled clicky synth melody. Very relaxing but also carrying some hidden touch of mystery within it. STORM directly carries on with this sound aesthetic, falling in pretty much the same key as the but in this piece we also have some airy female vocal samples, lush soft high synth notes and a calmer stream of droning pads. Then we have FIT which is all based around a single phasing synth drone, the New Age influences shift a bit more to the foreground again in this one with the airy sound of ths synths and more reduced melodic content. INTER then changes up the sound a bit more with more melodic variation and also a bit of a progression in the layered lush and sweeping synths and ethereal vocal samples, crossfading into a field recording of a sports competition. This is a hint of the theme of this EP and why the artist name is AF85, as I found out that if you look up AF85 on Instagram, you can find the offical account of an athlete. Which makes this a kind of sonification of sports and AF85 being the nickname of the athlete, making her anonymous which helps listeners focus more on the sound aesthetic AF85 created than on the details of the inspiration of this EP. ACC follows afterwards, which is the only track on the tape that features a bit, though it's pretty subtle, only including a snare / clap pattern. ACC's melody is a bit more poppy, feeling a bit like that R&B influenced, deconstructed club styled atmospheric kind of production style, lush vibes and a nice groove in here. And then we're already onto the OUTRO track, which directly follows from ACC in key as an outro of that track. Droning synths are accompanied by motivational words from (presumably) AF85 the athlete herself, making this track sound the most like Vaporwave. Once again, simple melody elements, but a sweet lush vibe that doesn't feel cheesy really. Afterwards we're already onto the first remix from the extended part of the Cassette tape, tacked onto the end of side A we have ハイパーオリンピック (Laura Luna Remix) which is a full EP rework by experimental musician and sound artist Laura Luna. Laura Luna layers mutiple layers os synth samples from the original EP tracks over eachother to create a dense and deep semi-plunderphonics type of aural tapestry. Subtly shifting from layer to layer Laura Luna repurposes AF85's music to create an ethereal ambient piece similar to the originals but also with plenty of fragmentation laying the looping audio files edits bare and revealing the techniques used to create the rework which adds a glitch inspired aesthetic to it. Laura Luna stays true to the sound of the samples in many ways so the rework does feel like a direct continuation of the EP itself but the stretched and looped sound do also add a feeling to it that sounds like the sonic reprocessing in your mind of impressions of music you just heard, constantly shifting towards certain details you remember and outputting those memories as loops. Like in a semi-sleeping state of mind. Great sound. Side B of the cassette tape continues the extended part of remixes with STORM (YlangYlang Remix). Like Laura Luna's rework, YlangYlang's Remix doesn't really try to unrecognizably distort the original sounds from the EP at the beginning but creates an atmosphere that is quite similar. YlangYlang's approach is more filtered however and with a different kind of progression. YlangYlang uses heavy filtering on the pad sound samples, creating a saturated fuzzy little cloud of sound floating around in a small spaces peacefully. Around half-way into the remix however YlangYlang brings in a distorted kick hit and adds Industrial elements to the mixture with hissy distorted percussion and fuzz with elements from the field recordings in the original tracks amplified and manipulated, creating hissy noisy waves of sound layered over the atmospheric pads. Very nice. Then we have INTER (eva01 + wim dehaen Remix) which mangles up the original track in a futuristic sci-fi deconstructed club style but with a very vibrant and quirky sound, full of funky tropical sounds and scattering liquidlike percussion but also plenty of excellent noisy glitched up sounds. Very enjoyable remix full of great sonic details and a quick pace. ACC (R D VENNING Remix) is a more noisier remix featuring heavy distortion but also unique dynamics in its composition and an abstract metallic style of grooves. The remix follows a pretty loose and unpredictable progression with more of a drone in terms of melodic elements, minimal sections of heavily manipulated samples and percussion bits are intertwined with sudden bursts of harsh distorted sound or melody with added EDM riser synth effects adding a wacky kind of touch to this remix which feels more like a walk in a strange alien zoo. Natural sounds and metallic digital manipulations blending into eachother like a reality that sometimes glitches out into a state of absolute black. Weird but cool remix. On the last track OUTRO (Yearning Kru YKV) Yearning Kru mangles up samples from the originals quite a lot, creating a tape saturated stream of psychedelic liquid mixed with natural minerals. This remix is more constant in composition, being based mostly around a drone for a big part of its length. Yearning Kru heavily manipulated especially the field recordings with distortion, pitch shifting and reverse, heavily amplifiying the high frequencies and creating cool crunchy and sharp effects. The applause from the ending of the field recording of OUTRO features heavily in this remix creating a sound similar to a river stream moving across little rocks in the water. In the end of the track you can also hear some cool hissy tape manipulation effects, very cool.

ハイパーオリンピック (DIAMOND EDITION) by AF85 is a nicely atmospheric and at times psychedelic tinged EP of experimental music that on the original tracks by AF85 features a lush and New Age tinged vibrant sound similar but not quite into Vaporwave, with a quickly flowing smooth tracklist that is a quick listen but rewards many repeated listens with its quality sound work and pleasant compositions. The remixes expand on the sonic palette of the original tracks but also offer more abstracted, trippy and deconstructed reworks of the source material and further explore the many details withing the field recordings as well as shape the pads in various ways creating alternate atmospheres in different places yet all combined working as a well compiled whole. A great listen for listeners into Vaporwave but looking for something more experimental and surprising. I also recommend the tape for anyone into the weird, quirky side of experimental music and sound art blending in both analog and digital sound manipulation into exciting sonic pieces. Great EP.

Analysis:

RedRosette J: This episode had a lot going on and we have a lot to talk about but first thing is first: Suzy. Honey. Take an acting class. Your acting has not improved since Dream High. Seriously. I’m honestly having trouble connecting with this character. (Also, my bad, I thought this drama was about people seeing visions of future deaths, but Jubiemon corrected me. It’s about people seeing visions of the future). I don’t understand her quirky/perky obnoxious Candy vibe. I really really wanted a more nuanced character. Someone with some depth and feeling and emotion that is more than just forced fake crying. Seriously. I also don’t really feel, at this point, a connection between Lee Jong Suk and Suzy. Sorry guys. It falls flat for me. If the super obnoxious OST and the intense close ups weren’t there to shove it in my face that this was supposed to be some fated love story, I wouldn’t buy it. Sorry.

Jubiemon J: I found this episode to still be a good setup for what’s to come. However, I do have a few areas that I didn’t quite enjoy so much. I also don’t like the character type they’ve set out for Suzy. This character doesn’t suit her and she hasn’t been able to fit well with this quirky character. (This is an aside but if you want to see a quirky personality, go look at one of the clips of “I Live Alone” with Sunghoon. He’s definitely 4D in a cool way.) Aside from her, though, I also felt like Jae Chan’s younger brother looks far too old to be a high school student. (Sorry pal.) I wished that they had placed him as a university student instead.

RedRosette J: On other notes, Lee Sang Yeob is doing a fabulous job as a sleazeball lawyer Yoo Bom who you just have to hate. He’s so irritating to watch and makes you want to just be like ugh stop. Which is great because that’s the character. The introduction of the second female lead (the prosecutor woman) also fell a bit flat for me. I don’t know anything about the actress but there was nothing really special about her introduction.

Jubiemon J: I agree so much! Lee Sang Yeob has been great as the evil criminal defense lawyer. I get so irritated when I see him! I kind of wish that Jae Chan was less upfront about things and had more EQ, but I guess that’s part of his journey of learning to act smarter and it does make a good contrast between Yoo Bum’s and Jae Chan’s personalities.

Oh my goodness! I completely treated the 2nd female lead as a minor, minor side character. My bad.

RedRosette J: I also keep loving the interactions between the two brothers  and I’m curious to see how Jae Chan and Hong Joo stop Seung Won’s (yes, that is Shin Jae Ha’s character’s name. I knew there had to be reason why we weren’t told his name thus far!) impending fact. I am also curious to see how fate ties up loose ends in terms of the policeman who didn’t die (It’s all very Final Destination-ish). RedRosette J: I continue to really really like the plot though and the way it is written. I like that the writers don’t infantilize the viewers and keep the information going consistently. I really liked that Hong Joo’s past warnings to her dad and her backstory was being shown concurrently with the events of the present and Jae Chan’s future visions. It means that your brain is actively working while watching trying to figure out how the pieces fit. It’s been awhile since a drama has been able to do that for me, so I really appreciate that. One thing I’m not too excited about is the childhood trope. Really? You had to use the classic “they met when they were kids at a funeral home” trope to derive the future dream connection? Ehhh….I hope the writers sell me on a stellar reason for why they did this or I’m going to be super disappointed.

Jubiemon J: I did like the flashbacks mixed with Jae Chan’s dreams too. That was an interesting approach. I totally agree about that . . . fated to meet someone since childhood . . . Overused. Honestly I haven’t heard of any stories in my life where someone realized that he or she met his/her partner a long, long time ago. The most would be something like . . . oh they have some random mutual friend.

Issue 1: Whether there is some serious meta going on in these episodes

RedRosette J: I have two words for you guys: Page Turner. OMG. Kim So Hyun as an angry pianist and Shin Jae Ha with a closeted crush on her? Really guys? You’re going to do this to us again? Last time, Ji Soo got the girl, this time, I think external forces (and the fact that Kim So Hyun is only doing this as a special appearance) is going to keep poor Shin Jae Ha from getting the girl. I’m so not cool with this. He’s such a cutie patootie. Like total puppy vibes. Please let him have the girl. But real talk: this story line, although we could do with less of Kim So Hyun yelling at poor Shin Jae Ha because well, see above sentence. But either way, the meta was real folks.

Jubiemon J: I’m honestly tired of the angsty kid. Sure, I understand that you’re super frustrated about your family’s situation, but do you have to push away the nicest guy ever? Kim So Hyun’s character was just super rude here . . . It reminded me of Mean Girls. Twisted Regina George vibes with some crazy fam stuff going on.

RedRosette J Aside: For those of you who haven’t seen Page Turner, go watch it right now. Its three episodes of cuteness that you won’t regret.

Issue 2: Whether Jae Chan’s rationale for not wanting to believe Hong Joo’s ability to see the future is logical

RedRosette J: I think what Jae Chan was saying to Hong Joo was totally rational and totally logical. Jae Chan says he doesn’t want to believe her even if it’s true because that means he will have to save everyone and when he cant he will be super torn up about it and he doesn’t think that he can handle it. I think it is totally reasonable to refuse to take on a responsibility that you are sure that you can’t handle. I think it’s irresponsible to take on something and then fall apart when you can’t do it. So yes, I agree with his line of reasoning. Whether this works out in practice and reality is a different story.

Jubiemon J: I actually felt kind of annoyed that he was being a hypocrite. He did save her . . . so why wouldn’t he believe in her ability to see the future? I felt like his reasoning was poor because he just didn’t have the guts to face the guilt or the courage to try to change anything. However, he did have the guts to save Hong Joo so . . . what is this sudden turn of events? I didn’t like it. I’m in the camp of . . . if you’re being given responsibility, you just take it and do it. It’s just like at work. You still have to do the stuff you’re assigned even if you don’t like the work. I also see this as a scenario of a doctor. If the patient comes to see you with some illness, you don’t just ignore and turn them away. You try to find a cure even if you know it might be futile.

Issue 3: Whether a defense lawyer can force a prosecutor to go with a lesser charge

RedRosette J:  Uhhhh no…..that’s not really how it works. A defense lawyer can’t just walk into the prosecutor’s office and be like “oh yea btw, these are medical records which show assault, so go with an assault charge….” No. The prosecution works independent of the defense lawyers. The only time they are in contact with each other is during pre-trial conferences and to request disclosure (the documents that the prosecution has against the person being charged). It is a gross miscarriage of justice if the defense gets to walk in and make demands about what charges to lay on a suspect. That’s not how the law works and I’m pretty sure that regardless of whether it’s Canada or anywhere else, that’s how it’s supposed to work. Of course, reality could be very different when you taking into consideration things like corruption and bribery etc.

Issue 4:  Whether there is a distinction between Injury and Assault

RedRosette J: In Canada, there is a distinction between something called Battery and Assault. Assault generally deals with the threat of force and the person looking to act on it. Battery is when the victim actually sustains physical injuries from said violent threat. I think what might have happened here is that it probably got lost in translation and when they said “Injury” it probably translates to Battery or the equivalent of that. Kim So Hyun’s character raises an interesting point, where she says that in the case of assault,  charges are laid only if the victim agrees to press said charges. This would explain why Yoo Bom was trying to get the lesser assault charge which would mean that they could coerce the victim into not pressing charges. But generally, there is a distinction and there weren’t wrong in clarifying that.

Jubiemon J: What Redrosette said is in regards to the area of torts. In Canada, battery falls under the area of torts, which is civil law. If that were the case, then prosecutors would not be involved. It’d be the mom vs the dad and damages could be awarded. Also, battery is easier to fulfil than you would think–just has to be intentional, harmful/offensive, direct, force/contact of a person/body/purse of another. I remember our professor saying that even if you touch someone’s shoulder, that could potentially be battery.

Canada’s Criminal Code doesn’t list battery as a crime. Instead, the Code has an offense of assault and assault causing bodily harm. Canada’s Criminal Code lists here what assault would be:

265(1) A person commits an assault when

(a) without the consent of another person, he applies force intentionally to that other person, directly or indirectly;

(b) he attempts or threatens, by an act or a gesture, to apply force to another person, if he has, or causes that other person to believe on reasonable grounds that he has, present ability to effect his purpose; or

(c) while openly wearing or carrying a weapon or an imitation thereof, he accosts or impedes another person or begs.

Different countries characterize their charges differently, so in the US, there is criminal battery. I did a quick look at the South Korean Penal Code and I think this would be one of the potential charges that the dad could face.

CHAPTER XXV CRIMES OF INFLICTING BODILY INJURY AND VIOLENCE

Article 257 (Inflicting Bodily Injury on Other or on Lineal Ascendant) (1) A person who inflicts a bodily injury upon another shall be punished by imprisonment for not more than seven years or suspension of qualifications for not more than ten years or by a fine not exceeding ten million won. (2) When the crime as referred in paragraph (1) is committed on a lineal ascendant of the offender or of his spouse, one shall be punished by imprisonment for not more than ten years or a fine not exceeding fifteen million won. (3) Attempts to commit the crimes of the preceding two paragraphs shall be punished.

Issue 5: Whether defense lawyers can fudge medical reports and “get rid” of evidence.

RedRosette J: Uhhh…..MOST DEFINITELY NOT. That is not a defense lawyer’s job. You don’t “clean up your client’s messes” in that way. This would be a blatant violation of the rules of professional conduct and the ethics of being a lawyer. It could effectively mean being disbarred and even prosecution and jail time. Defense lawyers exist to ensure that everyone has access to the law and to make sure that accused persons are given a fair right to be heard having access to all the information and rules pertaining to their case. This is a far cry from a defense lawyer who goes and commits more crimes to get their client out of jail. WTF. No.

Jubiemon J: No! He also used to be a prosecutor too and from Jae Chan’s comments, he was already acting dirty back then. I remember glancing at the Penal Code for South Korea and there was a section for charges against corrupt public officials, so . . .

Issue 6: Whether this episode highlights some of the issues faced by victims of domestic violence

RedRosette J: I think we discussed this in a previous review too, but yes, this episode highlights some crucial things about victims of domestic violence. It is usually categorized as Battered Women’s Syndrome where the women are too afraid of the abuse to leave or stand up to the abuser. It’s a form of physical and psychological abuse. Kim So Hyun’s character says that her mother is more afraid of her dad than the law when the scene shows the mother agreeing to drop the charges against the husband. I think it’s important to realize that domestic violence is a very real and live issue and that it’s a good thing that dramas highlight these things.

Issue 7: Whether it is acceptable to have workplace religious practices

RedRosette J: Generally, workplaces should be secular so as not to alienate or exclude co-workers. I’m not really a proponent of religion in the workplace or anywhere involving communal stuff because I think that religion is deeply personal and should be observed in your own time. However, it makes a difference, if your workplace be definition is a religious place or organization or community. If everyone has the ability to participate that is fine, in my view. In this case, Jae Chan, not having a religion, was isolated from his co-workers who were praying at lunch. If one does have a religious requirement that has to be carried out in a communal place, it should then be done with respect to those who don’t and not in such blatantly alienating ways. So, in general, I don’t think that workplaces should have religious practices.

Jubiemon J: I also don’t think workplaces should force people to have religious practices, but I do remember that in South Korea, many citizens are Christians. Then again, I doubt that’d mean that religious practices would be obligatory at work. Somehow I’m reminded of that Canadian case regarding a Charter right and how there was some praying that would always happen before this meeting and there was a Charter violation (I think–putting that there b/c the Charter is definitely one of my weaker areas in law…).

Conclusion: Appeal Allowed.

Jock Retrospective

“23! 23!” coach James Gosz in season two of jock, I think the best thing that I’ve done with my college life is being able to write a screen play for three years and make it into a script series this is the story of that and how it became just more than a fan fiction for people to read it was a script series that would touch the lives of its readers. I think Jock Is a perfect example of how a coaching staff or a team goes through their everyday lives as they deal with certain issue in their lives or the team and how would that affect them that is why jock is so important to me .

I think when I first started writing jock I believe I was a second year student at Unvieristy of Wisconsin Marathon county and it was at a time when I was trying to figure what I wanted to do with my life and I thought about going to be film major , now of course that has change but I have been watching the tv shows that made me happy as kid and at that time I said let’s try it , I remember the first draft I never did it was a scene where two guys taking showers after practice and then I started on the journey with all of you . First, I had to develop a story and what it was going to be about and at the time I was in my third year at Merrill high school as a basketball coach so I thought to myself lets go with that route. Then came the hard part the characters and in two ways what were the names going to be and location, now I just got accepted to UW-Milwaukee for just admission and I always had a thing For Milwaukee Rufus King so I was like “BINGO”. Next came how do we tackle the issue of a high school basketball team and its coaching staff and that is where I turned my attention to my Tv and what I watch which where Nip tuck, the west Wing, and ER which most of the episode ideas came as well blending in the basketball theme.

When I first gave the pilot script to everyone that would read it, I went home ate then I was there not going to like it at all and then I went back to finishing my homework then coming home and reading the response to the script which was amazing everyone loved it and I was like I got something here and I can honestly tell you that this series is my life outside of the game of basketball.        

I thought I need to blend in the fictional and non-Fictional of Coach James Gosz who was the Basketball coach in real for 26 years at Milwaukee King won 526 games 13 state Appearance and 4 state titles and I thought I wrote to the point where I made the  James Gosz in Jock  so Real like the one on the court in Milwaukee even though this Rufus King was base in the small Section of New York City, when I started writing the pilot I was so nervous because I have not done anything like it and then I started writing .

I remember the first scene was Locker room and then it went it full blown coaching where two coaches where watching tape of a game that they just did and introducing Offense and defense and playing styles and I bet my Readers where like what’s a 2-3 zone and  man to man when I was talking about the pace of the game that is either Up tempo or balance and the readers are like hold up slow down  smoothie smith but I think it became more about the coaching staff and players and how it effects them when they lose or win or maybe what is going on in their personal lives that’s what I took from all three shows  and may it into my own. Script series.

I think the best thing about the script series was two things one, the Charcters that I put in there or the social issues that I did over the course of 10 season. First to the characters I think there some characters that just stick to me from the start like Rebecca Fisher who I put in there about mid-way through season 2   and she not only became Curtis and Matthew best friend but also there surrogate for hazel but most importantly she was develop into one of the leading ladies of the series , I always say to myself she is loosely based on Alina Cummingham who won 390 games at Rufus King and Bradley Teach in Milwaukee over a course of 23 year coaching career as a head coach ,  or when Albert was brought up in season 8 to 10 with that voice of his and basketball talent that got his team to state or his kindness for kids with special needs all the Charcters that I did over the years had something special to them ,but in season 9 I begin to delovp a storyline for the Albert character that would invold a backstory that his parents were killed in a freak accident and left only his brother and him but more importantly how albert was able to care for his brother when he was paralyzed from the neck  wrist down .  Number two has a lot to do with number one because of the development in storyline of the characters   was the social issues and basically begins with Season one with the characters of Curtis Anderson and Matthew Gosz. those two are my heart beat , my everything  and the reason why I say that is because it began as a payback storyline on Kurt and Blaine for the worst storyline they could possible do which was season 6 but then It became the this world win of love .

Matthew Gosz was introduce as a gay high school Basketball player at a time when Pro  ,college or even high school at the time Athletes where beginning to come out as gay and being themselves and Matthew was James son I thought it was the prefect characters the other half of CATT was Curtis who was the man of matt’s  dream but the social issues around Curtis was him being Hard of hearing with a learning disorder and also gay himself without coming out to anyone , I felt that it should  natural to be who you are and it became a storybook love story for jock . other social issue that I did that clearly made my readers think twice was the relationship between Alison Carlson and Sonny Jorgensen I have always stated what If I put a girl with down syndrome to fall in love with a boy without special needs and it began I am so proud to write that storyline for season 1 to season 3. But I think one of best things I have ever done was write a storyline beginning in season 8 when Curtis Began to see a Deaf student who was in the mainstream educational system name Marcus Kirikas which began the story of educating my readers about the community which I abousltly loved. all the social issues that I brought to jock was solely on me and headlines of what was happening in my world at that time.

In terms of sports issues that were brought to jock beside victory and defeat was issues that I thought were well done on my point but what happen in the past or recent years for example I brought up a storyline in season 4 which was about College Players being paid and I brought the word Death Plenathy which a school in the 1980’s got and that school never recovered and school happen to be Southern Methodist Unvieristy , another that was brought up was a Shot clock in high school basketball and it was develop as a story where the boys where off and Albert was in his office at the center watching live stream where it had a game between New York St. Vincent (based on Milwaukee Vincent ) and New York JFK (based on Milwaukee Washington ) and they held on the ball for all the game and you can see the pain of the coaches and players watching that game and what they wanted for the future and it brings it back to me and other coaches in Wisconsin at the time which is based on a true story ,where the event was Antigo High School (That team to East ) vs Rhinelander in a playoff game and the final score was 14-11 in a 36 min game .

There were times where I took the characters out of the traditional line of basketball into a crisis mode of an event in their lives and I did that over and over again throughout the series and some them where based on real events like when shutdown happen cause of the riots around the center it was based on the Milwaukee riots in Wisconsin I think I wanted to do those eps because to see what they would do in that situation or when a player is deals with off the court issues like how Albert , Hazel ,Luke, and Zach dealt with the tragedy at the center and dealing with it afterward I wanted to really show the readers how it affected them not just off but on  the court .

I think that some of the best episode ever written in fan fic history are here I always say to myself but if you ask my readers that read the script week after week they were amazing. I can think of some of the best without going back at my episode that I wrote to countdown the greatest one by one with you. starting with number five , I think back to season 8 episode 1 I will honestly say that this one of my favorite eps in season 8 because for 7 season I was writing about the players and their lives and I wanted to blend it a little so the season 8 premiere was all about the coaches and what they had to do with their day , number four is from season 6 which is untitled on the beach which was about the last days of a student at Rufus king name Darren Jamison and his Lover Jordan Guttmacher  the background of the story is that Darren was killed off in season 3 due to a brain Tumor and I wanted to do a backstory one of two them and this one was about the last day of his life and it was so powerful because it was Darren and Jordan last day together a couple that loved each other , number 3 is from season 7 where James travels to san Diego to see his parents and his mother who is dying and it showed the true relationship of a father and son that hasn’t talk to in 10 years and it shows some healing in that relationship later Don Gosz would later coach with Rebecca fisher at King in season 7 , number two has to be Curtis and Matt wedding cause I did it the right way other than the other writers this was so rewarding for me to write my own wedding I loved it  , and number one is from season 6 episode 7 which is called Heal thyself which was about Darren last day at School which was about how he went to a clinic and treated a man name AL Ervin who had epilepsy as well and the last patient he did was a little girl who had something in her finger and it showed what a human is .

I think the one thing that I want my readers to understand is that I tried so hard to get it right from my point of view of being a coach and this is what I want to say about the characters of this script series they were heroic by nature they were always trying to do the right thing when it came to the game of basketball but they didn’t always win they lost a lot , and the other is that on top of that is you knew that these Charcters gave it their all you knew that it effected them not just 38 or 39 pages you were reading about them you knew wow when they go home after a game rather if it’s a player or a coach you knew that they are dealing with this lost their dealing with this defeat their dealing with this victory their dealing with it whatever it might be and that’s what makes them more human as you read eps over again and I think that is really powerful.

Finally , I hope my readers know how much I want this script to be the best ,it may not be realistic at times but I love the writing that I did for the series and I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did so from me to you thank you very much and I can’t wait for the journey that my other writing can take on .
