QUITE POSSIBLY THE HEAVIEST BLUES TRACK OF 1967 -- PURE, STRAIGHT-OUT-THE-SWAMP HEAVY BLUES.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the ultra rare Buddah "Plastic Factory" (b/w "Where There's Woman") single by CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & HIS MAGIC BAND, taken from the recently unearthed mono masters to the Captain's 1967 debut LP "Safe as Milk," released on Sundazed Music as part of Record Store Day Black Friday in 2012.
But, yeah, this track boasts just the murkiest, dirtiest, most menacing blues sound you've ever heard, and with the bass guitar being totally up front in the mix as well, hence the track's power, ferocity, and overall depth.
This ain't the Summer of Love at all, people, and it's just a really super-HEAVY and scary-sounding, no frills, blues cut. The Captain's harp is absolutely masterful as well, and it remains my all-time favorite track on his "Safe As Milk" (1967) debut LP until my inevitable doom. Check that shit out if ya haven't already!

WORD TO THE WISE: if you pick up the 2015 "MONO" reissue of Safe As Milk that was licensed to DeAgonstini it is in STEREO.
Still sounds fantastic, but what the hell Sundazed / DeAgostini?!

Safe As Milk - Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
Captain Beefheart's first album is I believe a much better introduction than Trout Mask Replica. I feel like a good way to describe this is slightly weird electric blues. There are a couple songs with Theremin, which I think is pretty cool. Also, at least in(some?) vinyl releases of this album you get a bumper sticker saying Safe as Milk, with a doll face next to the text. As someone with a car with a Safe As Milk bumper sticker, people have some confused looks at stop lights when they see the bumper sticker and sometimes take photos. My favorite song is Zig Zag Wanderer.

Album #81: “Safe as Milk” by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band (1967)
in my mind, i’ve always lumped Captain Beefheart in the same realm as Frank Zappa: outsider music skirting up to (and in many cases, tearing apart) the fringes of popular music. but in many ways, the two are polar opposites: Zappa hews much closer to the techniques and disciplines of Jazz, Beefheart much looser, simpler, straighter blues rock.
i know Beefheart exclusively by reputation, and was expecting something much more Zappa-esque than what is presented here. is this humble beginnings or are my impressions of Beefheart misplaced? either way i really enjoyed this record. it is a weird record, though it feels sincere, not cynical or comical. i enjoyed it. i’m sure we’ll see more from Beefheart down the line.

WHAT IS HIP? TRY SLAPPING CAPTAIN BEEFHEART STICKERS ON YOUR PAD IN 1967.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the late, great John Lennon of THE BEATLES relaxing at home with an issue of the International Times countercultural publication. Note the [CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND] “Safe As Milk” stickers prominently displayed on the cabinet doors in John's sunroom at Kenwood, the house where Lennon lived from 1964 to 1968.
Anyway, it's been somewhat disputed whether John was a genuinenfan of the Captain & the Magic Band as no definitive proof has ever surfaced to this claim, and all we really have to go on are these stickers slapped on some cupboards at his pad. Anyway, umor has it that the stickers were a gift passed on to John and nothing much more than that.
