i mean. this is giving post-canon jack went to santa fe vibes in the realest way.

i think in this world, he leaves when he’s about 20 - he’s been scraping by with his illustrator job, making ends meet, but he just needs to know what’s out there. he can’t take the city anymore.

(it definitely has nothing to do with the fact that davey, whom he’s been in an unspoken more-than-friends-but-won’t-say-i-love-you situationship with for years, is moving upstate to go to college on some prestigious scholarship he was selected for. no way.)

so jack goes, and he likes it, and they keep in touch at first, and the years steadily go on, and they sort of stop writing. he goes from a ranch hand to owning a little plot of his own, never quite settles down with anyone, but maybe takes in orphans in his own type of lodging house where they can work on the farm for fair and decent pay.

meanwhile, davey is becoming this incredibly powerful lawyer, known for defending immigrants and the working class in some very high-profile cases. in 1911, he runs for city council, and it’s big news! he’s only 29, he’s got progressive views, he’s jewish and an immigrant… and voters love him. he wins his seat, and pisses off conservatives around the country in the process.

so jack reads a newspaper article one day about this idiot politician up in new york who’s pushing for crazy things like child labour regulation and laws around worker’s compensation — and he just sort of blinks at it, because he’s ninety-nine percent sure councilman jacobs is his davey, out there doing all the things he said he was going to do someday.

and it strikes him how badly he wanted to be there for it— wanted to see davey come home after a long day with his fire still lit, going on and on about all the ways the world could be better and we have the power for change jackie, i know we do, we just need to get people to listen; wanted to be there to campaign for davey, making posters and getting the newsies on board and telling everyone who’ll listen to vote for dave jacobs; wanted to take him home after finding out he’d won his seat and kiss the living daylights out of him.

so he leaves some of the older boys in his lodging house in charge of the farm, books a train ticket, and sends a telegram to davey’s office: COMING TO VISIT . SEE YOU SOON . JACK .

and then something something, he’s back in new york and tracks davey down and tells him how proud he is and they kiss about it or something

he goes back to santa fe, sells his farm in shares to some of the kids he once helped out so they can keep running it, and then moves back to nyc for good because home is where the man who has his heart is <3

Join exhibiting artists Miguel Arzabe and Daniela Rivera for a conversation about their work and process. Moderated by Matthew Villar Miranda, curatorial associate at Berkeley Art Museum.

This program is planned in conjunction with the exhibition Praxis of Local Knowledge on view at the SFAC Main Gallery through August 17, 2024.

About the Panelists Miguel Arzabe is a visual artist who lives and works in Oakland. He had recent solo shows at Shulamit Nazarian Gallery (Los Angeles, CA) and Johansson Projects (Oakland, CA). Arzabe’s work has been featured in such festivals as Hors Pistes (Centre Pompidou, Paris), Festival du Nouveau Cinéma (Montreal), and the Geumgang Nature Art Biennale (Gongju, South Korea); and in museums and galleries including MAC Lyon (France), MARS Milan (Italy), RM Projects (Auckland), FIFI Projects (Mexico City), Marylhurst University (Oregon), the Contemporary Jewish Museum, Berkeley Art Museum, the CCA Wattis Institute, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Arzabe’s work is held in public collections such as the Harn Museum in Gainesville, Florida, Albuquerque Museum of Art, Oakland Museum of California, the de Young Museum, San Francisco Arts Commission, the State of California, as well as numerous private collections. He has attended many residencies including Facebook AIR, Headlands Center for the Arts, Montalvo Arts Center, Millay Arts, and Santa Fe Art Institute. He holds a BS from Carnegie Mellon University, an MS from Arizona State University, and an MFA from UC Berkeley. In 2022 Arzabe was awarded the San Francisco Bay Area Artadia Award. In 2023 he was awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and and a Golden Foundation Residency. In 2024 he was a SECA award finalist.

Born in Santiago, Chile, Daniela Rivera received her BFA from Pontifcia Universidad Católica de Chile in 1996 and her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts, Boston in 2006. She is currently Professor of Studio Art at Wellesley College. She has exhibited widely in Latin American cities including Santiago, Chile, as well as in the United States. She has been awarded residencies at Loghaven, Headland Center for the Arts, Surf Point, Proyecto ACE in Buenos Aires, Vermont Studio Arts Center, and the Skowhegan School of Paintings and Sculpture. And she has been the recipient of notable fellowships and grants including from The Chiaro Award, The Rappaport Prize, Now + There, the Massachusetts Cultural Council Award, VSC, the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, the Berkshire Taconic Foundation, The FONDART in Chile, and the Saint Botolph Club foundation Distinguish Artist Award. Matthew Villar Miranda (he/they/siya) is Curatorial Associate at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. In their former position as Visual Arts Curatorial Fellow at the Walker Art Center, they worked on exhibitions by Julie Mehretu, Pao Houa Her, Paul Chan, and Pacita Abad. They serve on the Board of Stakeholders Museums Moving Forward (MMF), a Ford and Mellon Foundation-funded initiative of an intergenerational, cross-institutional coalition of art museum professionals committed to advancing equity across the museum field. In 2021, they co-curated the Art for Justice Fund-supported exhibition Undoing Time: Art and Histories of Incarceration at the Arizona State University Art Museum (ASUAM). They received their BA in History of Art from UC Berkeley (2013) and graduated among the inaugural class of ASU-Los Angeles County Museum of Art Master's Fellowship in Art History (2021).

George Irving Shirley (born April 18, 1934) is an operatic tenor and was the first African-American tenor to perform a leading role at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

He earned a BS in Music Education from Wayne State University and was drafted into the Army, where he became the first African American member of the Army Chorus. He was the first African American hired to teach music in Detroit high schools.

He moved to New York and began his professional career as a singer. His debut was with a small opera group in Woodstock as Eisenstein in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus and his European debut in Italy as Rodolfo in Puccini’s La bohème. He won a National Arts Club scholarship competition, and the following April he was the first African American singer to win the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions scholarship competition. He is the first African American tenor and the second African American male to sing leading roles for the Metropolitan Opera. He sang there for 11 seasons.

He has appeared at The Royal Opera, London; the Deutsche Oper Berlin; the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires; the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam; Opéra de Monte-Carlo; the New York City Opera; the Scottish Opera; the Lyric Opera of Chicago; the Washington National Opera; the Michigan Opera Theatre; the San Francisco Opera; and the Santa Fe Opera and Glyndebourne Festival summer seasons, as well as with numerous orchestras in the US and Europe. He has sung more than 80 roles.

He was on the faculty of the University of Maryland when he moved to the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, where he was Director of the Vocal Arts Division. Residents Must Be Part of Planning

Transit plan is promising, but South Dallas residents should have been included earlier

Transportation can make or break a neighborhood. A railroad junction brought economic prosperity to Deep Ellum in the late 1800s.

But in the 1940s, the railroad was torn out to make space for a new highway, and many residents were displaced.

Today, Interstate 345 and Interstate 30 divide Deep Ellum and Fair Park from downtown Dallas.

Pedestrian caps to link parts of Oak Cliff over Interstate 35E, and the Cedars neighborhood to downtown Dallas over Interstate 30 recently won federal grants.

Plans are also underway to reconstruct highways near Deep Ellum and Fair Park, but any deck parks over those projects are just ideas at this point.

That’s why a plan to improve transportation links between downtown Dallas and these neighborhoods is promising.

The project is called Fair Park Links and is being spearheaded by the North Central Texas Council of Governments, our region’s transportation planners.

The organization is studying confusing intersections like Exposition Avenue at Elm Street, where car traffic, Dallas Area Rapid Transit rail, and runners and cyclists coming off the Santa Fe Trail converge.

There are plans to realign Grand and Haskell avenues to make driving safer.

A section of Elm Street could become a two-way street.

Pedestrians familiar with the area know that walking down Commerce Street under the highways can often be faster than waiting for DART buses or the Green Line to take one to Deep Ellum.

The plan proposes increasing the frequency of Bus Route 214 that currently runs every 30 minutes during peak hours.

The plan also proposed dynamic electronic signage at transit stations to make DART more intuitive for new riders.

This high-level transportation planning is a good idea, but it should be done in step with residents.

At a community meeting for this project in late January at the South Dallas Cultural Center, some residents said that they wished they had been consulted about the plan earlier.

Shanay Wise, a South Dallas resident, said that she was concerned that the NCTCOG planners were not aware of the South Dallas/Fair Park area plan being developed by city staff and neighbors.

Wise also asked NCTCOG staff to work with Bike Friendly South Dallas.

Staff with the regional planning group told residents that the project is focused narrowly on the transportation links between Fair Park and downtown Dallas and doesn’t deal with broader land use improvements.

This is true, but transportation projects can reshape neighborhoods adjacent to them, and planners should be sensitive to residents’ concerns, particularly in historically overlooked areas like South Dallas.

The plan will be finalized in the summer, and residents can share their feedback online through Sunday.

As our region balances the objectives of moving people efficiently and reconnecting neighborhoods, plans like Fair Park Links can be the right solution when accompanied by robust community input.

Day 7 of a month of spooky prompts courtesy of the RPCDev Discord! This one got a little away from me, and I entirely blame @knowseverythingaboutyou. 

Oct 7: Midnight in a busy city, sirens blaring a few blocks away. 

Her supervisor called her into the nearest HQ–four hours away if traffic was kind, in Santa Fe–to do a full debrief regarding the yahoos and the footage Oz sent to SHIELD. There were concerns over whether or not the Osprey was as secure as they wanted it to be if her yahoos were any indication. And now that the hooded figures seemed to have claimed said yahoos for their own mysterious purposes, the investigation hit a dead end so to speak. SHIELD was…reluctant to send in an agent to investigate given the surreal nature of the town, based on various reports and Darcy’s own experience growing up there.

The debrief was long, drawn out, and entirely too repetitive for Darcy’s liking. She didn’t know how many times she had to avert her eyes from Oz’s footage depicting the distorted outline of a Hooded Figure approaching her while her supervisor, LT Koenig, demanded to know why she didn’t use her ICER on it. “These hooded freakshows make it so every site is compromised!” 

Darcy’s insistence that the Hooded Figures are generally alright save for the one or two bad apples in Night Vale who steal babies--and shouldn’t the fact that they saved Darcy from vague yahoo kidnapping be proof of that--fell on deaf ears while the wail of a police siren sped by outside, casting eerie red and blue lights against the tinted windows of the small conference room and the smooth clockface ticking away on the wall nearest the door. 

“The deputy department head is not happy, Lewis,” LT ground out, “As such he’s riding my ass, so I’m riding yours until this is resolved.” Deputy Director of the STAKE division, Gerardo Otxoa, was a well-known hardass, so Darcy got the feeling that LT was putting it mildly. So much for a cushy assignment for Koenig. 

The wailing disappeared down the block until they were left with the faint buzz of fluorescent lighting as the soundtrack to LT’s unimpressed gaze. 

Darcy breathed deeply. This was always the difficulty when working with outsiders who didn’t understand the uniqueness of Night Vale’s residents. Particularly those who may or may not exist in any quantifiable way.

“I can make a formal request to the City Council back home on behalf of SHIELD and STAKE, but that’s not going to go anywhere as the Hooded Figures are liminal beings who may or may not exist within this plane of reality. If pressed, you might ask Dr. Strange to see if he has a method of warding the Copper Osprey against them, or if he has further insight as to who they are or where they’re from. Personally, I refuse as a matter of self-preservation, given that this encounter had the best possible outcome and I do not want to get on the Hooded Figures’ bad side. What I will say for the record, is that it is entirely ill-advised to look at the Hooded Figures’ and that was the mistake the Tweedles made and why they were….disincorporated or whatever happened to them. You don’t look at them, you don’t talk about them, they do not exist, I don’t know what else I can say to make you and Silver Fox Boss understand. It’s so beyond dangerous to acknowledge them at all.”

Darcy’s hands felt icy as she dragged them over her face. The sun had long since set, and she just wanted to call it a day as the long drive left her feeling tired and grumpy, herself. The familiar blanket of fear that overcame her whenever the Hooded Figures came up had long since receded into an anxious anticipation to head back to her hotel for the night so she could get some rest before driving back home to the Osprey.  

“Either way, Strange and I are not compadres, as I find the Sorcerer Supreme entirely too pompous for my delicate sensibilities, and he’s effectively banned me from the Sanctum Sanctorum as the Cloak of Levitation likes me better. Modern Day headcannons :

• Is in a band! Newsies band au! Sarah started the legacy band in her senior year in highschool and left Jack to front it the next year.

• He plays lead guitar and sings. He prefers playing electric guitar but will do whatever he needs to.

• Loves Queen.

• Chose "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen for thr band to preform for their Winter variety. It went down well to say the least.

• Was told to look "appropriate" for a school setting for the show by Pulitzer so he obviously turned up looking like Freddie Mercury.

• Is on student council against his will. (Blame David and Sarah)

Okay, but just know that this isn’t going to be about race because it doesn’t work in my brain. The Jets will be the Manhattan Newsies and the Sharks will be the Brooklyn boys.

Okay, so…

Racetrack Higgins is the leader of the Jets, a gang that rules over the streets of Manhattan. They are well known throughout the city and people know not to mess with them, less they want to have the entire gang attack them for messing with one of their own.

Spot Conlon is the leader of the Sharks. They have ruled over the streets of Brooklyn for nearly a decade and are quite possibly the most feared gang in all of New York. But they are beginning to get hungry for more territory.

So they begin to infiltrate Manhattan.

Race and Spot had agreed on a truce about a year ago, but it’s clear that Spot is gearing to break it any day and Race is preparing his boys for the worst.

The Jets and the Sharks have been at each other’s throats for weeks, antagonizing each other, leaving bruises and never backing down from a fight.

But officer Weasel and Lieutenant Spider are always right around the corner to break up the fight. Snyder the Spider is known to hunt down the gang, more solely the underage kids, trying to bust them and get them put into the Refuge for the bonus he gets with every new “refugee” as most of these boys are orphans. But Race and Spot always manage to talk their boys out of trouble.

Knowing there’s going to be a party down at Jacobi’s diner, Race tells his crew that he’s gonna propose a rumble to Spot who was never one to back down from a fight. The dance was neutral territory. No one could get hurt there. The boys are hesitant as they’re afraid of the Brooklyn gang, but refuse to admit it. Knowing this, Race promises to get Jack to go to the party, his best friend and the Jets’ former leader who all the boys look up to very much.

Getting Jack to go is an entirely different problem. Race lives with Jack and Jack’s adoptive mother Miss Medda Larkin, as living with his uncle just gets Race new bruises every night. They’re as close as brothers can be.

Jack, who’s grown up and left the Jets for an adult’s life where he has a job and good money, doesn’t want to be a part of this rumble. Though Jack was the best fighter when he was the leader of the Jets, he no longer likes to resort to violence and is constantly trying to help Race grow up and get a job. Race doesn’t let that happen.

Regardless, Race invokes their brother bond with a word that means the other has to be there for them no questions asked, no matter what. So Jack promises Race he’ll be there, ten o’clock sharp.

Meanwhile, Spot is inviting his girl, Riddle (it’s weird to not write Sprace, but Riddle is an amazing OC of my friend @bexlynne and she’s great for this part) and his cousin, Katherine, to attend the party with him and his boys. Katherine is very excited about this as she doesn’t get out much. She lives with Spot and Spot’s girl as she and her father don’t get along and Spot offers her a place to stay and people to take care of her.

Riddle helps her get ready and they are the two most stunning girls attending the party.

At the party, Race and Spot basically have a battle to see who can have the most fun. Jack is trying to keep his boys away from the Sharks but gets distracted when he spots Katherine across the room.

It’s almost like time freezes. Like they’re the only two people in the world when Katherine’s eyes meet his own.

So Jack asks her to dance.

That’s when things begin to spiral downhill.

Jack and Katherine fall into an easy rhythm for an hour or two as they sneak out of the party, knowing they wouldn’t be widely accepted but also knowing that they wanted to get to know each other more.

Jack shows Katherine Manhattan. Katherine teaches Jack how to cheat at poker, which Jack comments will really help him when going up against Race who he believes uses the same tricks. It’s then that Jack begins to call Katherine “Ace”.

Katherine loves to explore. Her father has been looking for her. She doesn’t want to go back to him. So Spot doesn’t let her get out very often. Jack promises that he’ll protect her and then he takes her back to the dance where Spot has been worried sick. He takes Katherine home and threatens Jack who threatens him back only for Race to pull him away, reminding him that he can’t fight the Sharks on neutral territory.

Race then tells Spot to meet him at a little hang out (a drug store) called The Lodge for a War Council. Spot agrees before he leaves.

Jack follows Spot, Riddle and Katherine back to Brooklyn where he calls for Katherine and climbs her fire escape just to kiss her and tell her he had to see her again. Katherine tells him that she works at a theatre, sewing costumes and he can meet her there the next day. And he promises he’ll be there.

That night, Riddle tells Spot that if he meets the Jets for a War Council, she won’t be patiently waiting for him when he gets back. Spot still goes.

Spot and Race meet up at The Lodge, run by Todd Kloppman. Jack works there.

Race and Spot agree on a rumble, meeting beneath the highway. Jack talks them down, not liking the idea while he was falling quickly for Spot’s cousin, over whom he’s very protective. He talks Race and Spot down into only using their fists and no weapons, making the fight fair and less likely to end in disaster. Naturally, Spot, who’s been wanting to bite Jack’s head off ever since the party, believes he’ll be fighting the other man but Race tells him he agreed to fight the best fighter who is a current member of the Jets, who would be Mush, Race’s second. Spot doesn’t argue as they already shook hands.

After this, the Sharks leave and Snyder waltzes into The Lodge, questioning the boys, knowing a rumble is about to begin before trying to target them individually, asking how Albert’s mother’s corner is in business and how Crutchie’s dad is doing in prison. Kloppman and Jack get Snyder out, telling him he has no clue what he’s talking about and barely stopping Race from stabbing Snyder in the back.

The next day, Katherine is excited about seeing Jack again, but hears news of the rumble from Riddle who tells her that she’d be waiting to take care of Spot and give him a present when he comes home that night. Hearing this, Katherine is scared for everyone’s safety. When Jack arrives, Riddle promises she won’t give away Katherine’s secret but urges Katherine to end it anyway, despite Jack being right in front of her.

Jack tries to sweep Katherine off her feet again but Katherine stops him, begging him to stop the fight as she doesn’t want anyone getting hurt and if they can make peace between the gangs, maybe they can happily be together. When Jack agrees, Katherine melts and Jack and her dance in the theatre with a single spotlight on them and fall a little more in love with each other.

At the rumble, things are all going according to the agreement previously set up. Mush and Spot begin to wrestle until Jack meets them there and breaks up the fight, trying to unite the gangs through experience. Race tries to pull Jack back, knowing nothing good can come from this, but Spot just begins to fight Jack who refuses to put up a fight until Race, unable to watch his brother get hurt, instinctively punches Spot in the face.

This results in Spot sliding his pocket knife out, prompting Race to do the same.

Horrified at this, Jack tries desperately to pull Race away and talk him down, unable to watch the kid get hurt for him. But the other Jets hold him back. Jack cries out the secret word that they have that means “no questions asked, no matter what” so Race pauses, turning away and throwing his knife down until Spot calls him a not so nice name and Race turns around only to have Spot’s knife stab into his stomach.

The Jets let Jack go just in time for him to catch Race before he hits the ground. Race is crying, admitting for the first time in his life that he’s scared and not ready to die. He only lasts a minute before he’s gone.

Acting completely on instinct, Jack grabs Race’s knife and stands up, stabbing Spot in the exact place that he stabbed Race. That’s when a full fledged fight breaks out.

Jack is only able to process what just happened when the sirens are heard in the distance. Everyone scatters except for Jack who goes to hold Race again, closing the boy’s eyes for him before kissing him on the head and leaving him when Crutchie comes back to drag him away before Snyder gets him.

Katherine has no idea what transpired and she waits patiently for Jack to meet her at her window. When he doesn’t show, she goes out to find him, finding Hot Shot instead who’s getting a gun ready. He tells her that Jack killed Spot and Katherine doesn’t believe him, trying to run away before she hears Riddle screaming and sobbing in the other room calling Jack Kelly a murderer.

Eventually, Jack sneaks into Katherine’s room where she punches him in the jaw, sobbing and unable to cope until Jack brings her into his arms and apologizes again and again, telling her everything.

Despite what happened, Katherine still loves him. Jack is upset and Katherine is upset. So they comfort each other, inevitably leading to sex.

The Jets discover that Hot Shot is on the loose, looking for Jack. While they’re all on the run having no idea where Jack is, they panic, going off to try and warn him.

Jack and Katherine lay together for half the day, Jack promising that he would go get all the money he had and they could run away to Santa Fe and never have another worry in the world. But then there’s a knock at the door and Jack scrambles to get to the window.

Riddle is distraught, trying to get to Katherine, wanting time to help her through this but when Katherine opens the door to her room, Riddle immediately knows what happened and she begs Katherine to break it off and find another boy who wasn’t a murderer and hadn’t killed someone they both loved.

When Snyder arrives, trying to question Katherine about her cousin’s murder, Riddle silently agrees to go warn Jack about Hot Shot who’s out for blood. Unfortunately, the Jets find Jack first and when Riddle tries to warn them, they believe she’s a spy sent by the Sharks and attempt to soak her. Kloppman barely stops them in time to save her.

Angry and terrified, Riddle delivers a lie, telling the boys to tell Jack that Hot Shot found out about Jack and Katherine and had killed Katherine for getting Spot stabbed.

Then she leaves.

The boys go out, hoping to find Hot Shot, and Kloppman delivers the wrong message to Jack who rushes out, screaming for Hot Shot to come finish the job. He can’t live anymore. Not with Race and Katherine both gone.

But as he’s screaming, Katherine comes running. Jack is relieved and rushes to kiss her.

But Hot Shot wasn’t far behind Katherine.

He shoots Jack just as his fingers brush up against Katherine’s.

He tells Katherine he loves her for the first time, beginning to get delirious, claiming his dead parents are beside him and Race is calling his name. Katherine begs him to stay, but he can’t.

He dies in her arms.

Katherine grabs the gun from Hot Shot’s hands and screams, demanding to know how many bullets are left. She holds the pistol up to her head, crying about how they’d all killed Spot and Race and Jack with hate and that now she had hate too and could do what she wanted.

But she can’t pull the trigger.

The Jets and the Sharks alike move together to carry Jack off, creating a procession.

The feud is over and Katherine is named an honorary member of both gangs.

They bury Jack, Race and Spot side by side, having a funeral for them all.

And Katherine continues to live, knowing Jack would want her to.

“What you doing up here, squirt?” 

You jumped, not expecting to hear a voice from behind you, “W-what?” 

“You know this is MY penthouse, right?” Jack laughed, climbing over the last ladder rung onto the roof, placing himself down next to you, your feet dangling over the edge of the building. He threw the blanket he had brought up with him over your legs, shuffling up next to you so he could share the blanket with you. 

“You’ve shared everything with me since I was born…since when did that stop?” You teased, wrapping your arms around yourself as the bitter wind made you shiver. 

“Apparently, never” he laughed, copying you in staring at the sky, watching as the streaks of light flashed through the sky, shortly followed by a loud crash of thunder. He looked down at you, noticing you stare at the sky in awe, “I don’t get it” 

“What?” 

“When you were a baby, you used to be afraid of storms…when did you grow up?” 

“When I had to,” you said plainly, “When they took Dad” 

Jack looked at you shocked, almost offended, “Huh?” 

“I mean, don’t get me wrong. You’ve done great raising me and all, but…you’re just as much a child as I am, Jack” you breathed deeply when another crash of thunder rang through the air, “We both had to grow up…too quickly” 

“Well, you and me, kid…we’re going to get out of here” 

“Yeah” you laughed, “Course we are” 

“No, no I mean it, Y/N. We’re going to escape far away from here, to this place called Santa Fe” 

“Santa Fe” you repeated, watching as the lightning flew across the dark sky, the stars faintly appearing.

“As soon as I get enough money, we’re going home” he smiled, wrapping his arms around you as the thunder approved. 

Jack kept his promise. Well, to an extent. The thunder crashed, just as it had 5 years previously. You sat and waited for Jack and return to collect you, but as he explained in his letters, you knew he couldn’t get the money to do so. He had left, not long after the strike had settled and the newsies had won their battle, to go and live his dream in Santa Fe. He said he would stay until there was enough for the two of you to go, but you begged him to go, saying that you would only be happy if he was, so he kissed you goodbye and climbed on that train to Santa Fe. That wasn’t to say you weren’t happy - you lived with your family in New York, making your keep by selling papers to the upper glass gentlemen that looked down upon you daily. You also spent all your spare time with your boyfriend, Davey, who landed a job at the local council after his time with the newsies. Nothing too big yet, but he made the money to not only support his family weekly but also to rent his own apartment, where you spent most of your time. You promised the newsies you would stay until your 18th birthday in the lodging house, when you would then move in with Davey, supposing you two were still together. You hoped so, because-

“Y/N!” 

The loud shout from the top of the ladder made you scream. It was no louder than the thunder that echoed through the night, but the sudden cry from Davey’s lips made you shake in fear. 

“Davey?” 

“WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?” 

You stuttered, not sure what to think fo the soaked boy storming towards you angrily, “I-I-I just-“ 

“Y/N, you're soaking! What are you doing outside in the middle of the rain?!” He shrugged off his coat, wrapping it around your shoulders as his hair dripped on your forehead. 

“I-er…thunderstorm” you pointed up towards the sky, unable to form a sentence from the combination of shock and pre-hyperthermia, only just realising how cold it was outside when the warmth had finally wrapped around your shoulders. 

“Yes!” He laughed, still somewhat mad at you, “You’re out in the middle of a thunderstorm with not nearly enough clothes on…I mean…what exactly are you wearing? Pants and a…a linen shirt? No vest? No coat? No hat or gloves? Have you gone mad?” 

“Probably” you scoffed, looking back over the city as the lightning flashed across the sky repeatedly. 

“Please, come back inside…to the warmth” he begged, pointing back towards the ladder. 

“No…no I’m not moving” you stated firmly. 

“Y/N, please. Don’t make me drag you” he joked, although you could feel a sense of seriousness in his voice. 

“Davey, you can argue with me all you want, but I am not moving” you glared, the thunder backing you in perfect timing as you finished your sentence. You saw Davey flinch at the sound before he looked back down at you with pity in his eyes. His clothes were soaked through and his shirt had become see-through with the pouring rain. 

“Y/N, I’m not going to ask you again” 

“And I’m not going to tell you again!” You reinforced. 

Davey opened his mouth to speak back, the rain becoming a singular noise to fill the silence between the two of you, but he decided against his better judgment to argue with you. Huffing, he turned back on you and made his way back to the ladder, stopping briefly before descending back down into the warmth of the dorms. 

“What is with her?!” Davey huffed, shaking his hair like a wet dog all across the wooden floor. 

“She up on the roof again?” Race asked, toying with his cigar between his teeth.

“Sorry, a-again?” Davey asked, grabbing a towel from the heater by the bathroom, wrapping it around his shoulders to find some warmth in his damp clothes. 

“She does it a lot. Always when there’s a storm out” Crutchie added, leaning against the bed where Race was sat. 

“Not always” Davey laughed, realising that neither Crutchie or Race were joking, “Surely? I mean…she’s not up there a lot” 

“Well thunderstorms aren’t exactly common in New York now, are they?” Race laughed, nudging Crutchie who also giggled along with him. 

“She always sits up there? In the middle of a storm?” He asked, still confused as to what he was not understanding. 

“It’s something the Kelly’s always used to do together. Jack and Y/N would sit up there and watch the storm until it passed over. It’s just something they both really liked. When Y/N was a baby, thunderstorms calmed her down somehow and she’s loved it ever since. Well…that’s what Jack used to tell me” Crutchie shrugged, “I guess she’s missing Jack a lot today”

“She always misses Jack” Davey sighed, “I just wish she would come back in and not freeze to death out there” 

“You’re not getting her back in” Race laughed, “No way. We’ve all tried to every storm there’s been since Jack left” 

“Jack only left a couple years ago” Elmer butted in. 

“Yes, thank you for that, Elmer. Don’t butt into conversations you ain’t a part of!” Race shoved him away, throwing a pillow towards him for good measure. 

“I know you don’t like the fact that she’s sat there in the rain…but I don’t think you want her sat up there alone either, do you, Dave?” Crutchie raised his eyebrow. 

Davey sighed, nodding his head, “Does anyone have an umbrella?”

The rain continued to fall, and you stuck your tongue out and felt the drops of water fall gently onto the tip, making you smile. The chill of the bitter wind had started to bite you once again, as Davey’s coat had now become just as wet as the rest of you. The lightning surged across the air once again, making your eyes open wide and your smile grew wider. Suddenly, you felt the rain stopped falling upon your head, the light from the moon got dimmer right above you. Looking up, you saw an umbrella placed above you, and soon after a blanket was draped over your shoulders. 

“If I can’t convince you, I’ll join you” Davey smiled, taking a seat next to you and draping another blanket over both of your legs. 

“I thought you didn’t want to be up here” 

“I don’t” he laughed, “I brought supplies to make it survivable though” 

“Such as?” You smiled with him, looking towards the bag that Davey was shuffling through. 

“Take my coat off” 

“What? Why? It’s warm” you argued. 

“Because this will be warmer” Davey held up an old flannel shirt of his, “For a start, it’s dry. And Romeo said you could wear his jacket. And I brought a couple pillows up because let’s be honest, this roof isn’t exactly comfortable” 

“Jack and I used to sleep up here in the summer,” you said simply, sliding the warm flannel on your own soggy shirt.

“Yeah, but you Kelly’s are superhuman” 

“No, it’s just the roof is more comfortable than the streets” you glanced at Davey, noticing him swallow thickly from the awkwardness, “I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to-“ 

“Well, it’s true” Davey cleared his throat, pulling a towel out of the bag to dry his hair with, “I just hope that I can offer you more comfort than you currently have. Comfort that you deserve” 

“You know you already do more than enough for me, Dave” you smiled, taking his hand and squeezing it tightly.

“You will move in with me next year, won’t you, Y/N?” He asked, a sort of worry on his face, “When you leave this place, you’ll come and live with me?” 

“Of course” you smiled, “That’s all I’ve ever wanted since we became, ya know…official” 

You raised your eyebrows at him suggestively, making him giggle, “Four years next week” 

“You’re a saint” you leaned into him, feeling his arms wrap around your shoulders as the thunder continued to crash across the sky, the lightning dancing as an accompaniment to its song.

“I am?” 

“Yeah, for putting up with me for four years”  

“I am” he laughed, jumping slightly when the next thunder rang in his ears. 

“You aren’t scared of thunderstorms are you?” You teased Davey, seeing the worry on his face. 

“No, I just don’t like being outside in the middle of them” he sighed. 

“You don’t have to be out here, you know” 

“No, I do” he smiled down at you, “Can’t have you dying of pneumonia. Or hyperthermia. Or the plague” 

“The plague?” You asked, confused. 

“I had to say a third sickness. Rule of three. It was the first one that came to my mind” 

“Not Influenza? Common cold?” 

“Those would have been more viable options” he laughed, realising his mistake.

There was a comfortable silence as the thunder continued to crash through the sky, the two of you watching in awe as the lightning bolts flew across the sky. It was honestly the most beautiful thing you had seen in a while. You felt contempt with Davey, his thumb absentmindedly stroking your knuckles as the two of you stared into the sky. You looked at him momentarily, watching as his eyes shone when the lightning came, the way his breath hitched when the thunder followed. The way he was thinking about something so intensely. It felt like you were the only two people on earth. 

“You heard from Jack recently?” Davey asked quietly, breaking the silence. 

“Not recently. Last I heard from him was about 4 months ago. It takes time for letters to be delivered back and forth from different states” 

“So, he’s out living the dream then, huh?” 

“Yeah” you laughed, almost coming out as a jealous scoff, “He got a job working at the largest ranch in the state, apparently. He’s taken to looking after the animals. The guy who owns the land, Mr Samson, has given Jack so much. And he pays well. Jack says once he has enough, he’s going to send me the money for me to go to Santa Fe and be with him. Apparently, they have a job for me when I go” 

“And are you going to?” 

You looked up to Davey, “No” 

“What?” 

“I promised you I’d move in with you. Home is where you are, Davey” 

“Really?” His smile was childish but full of love, his arms tightening around you, pulling you closer towards his lap. 

“Yes,” you laughed, feeling his hands warm on your waist, “Don’t get me wrong, I love Jack…but he’s my brother. I’m not exactly willing to live with him forever. Like you. You moved away from Les, didn’t you?” 

“Well, yes but-“ 

“But nothing!” You interrupted Davey, “I love Jack, but I love you more. I want to be with you for as long as you’ll let me” 

Davey smiled, smiling contently, “I’ll always let you, Y/N” 

“When I move in, can we get a dog?” 

Davey laughed loudly, “My landlord wouldn’t let me” 

“Cat?” 

“It would get lost” 

“Fish?” 

“From where?!” He kept laughing, “I doubt we’ll be able to get anything!” 

“A fly?” You asked after a small moment of silence.

“I might just be able to do that” he nudged you with his shoulder, placing a kiss on your temple, “Although, we will have to look at buying a bigger bed” 

“We both fit perfectly fine in the one you currently have” 

“Yes, it’s fine for now,” he said, nuzzling his chin on your shoulder, watching the sky calm down from the earlier storm, “But for every night? We’re going to need a much bigger bed. You’re not going to want to sleep right on top of me every night” 

“I never said that” you argued back, kissing his hand that was wrapped around your chest. 

“Alright then, I don’t want you sleeping on top of me every night” 

“You don’t mean that”

“No, you’re right I don’t” he smiled, kissing the very top of your ear, “Although I have no doubt that our kids will want to sleep in the same bed as us too…so we will need a bigger bed at some time” 

“Sorry…kids?” you asked, almost stuttering. 

“Well, eventually we’ll have children, won’t we?” 

“Jesus, Dave, I’m only 17!” 

“Well…I don’t mean right now!” He laughed, stroking your arms gently as the stars started to peek out from behind the clouds, the thunder rumbling quietly, “I mean in the future. When we’re married” 

“Who says we’ll even get married” 

“I do” he whispered, “I’d ask you right now if I had the ring” 

“Again, Dave…you may well be an adult, but I’m not” 

“Does that matter? My mother married my father when she was 16. A-and there’s this girl at work who got engaged just last month, and she’s only just turned-“ 

“Dave, I get it, I get it” you laughed, trying to shuffle out of his grip, “But I’m not taking that as a proposal” 

“I’m not expecting you to” he kissed you once again, “I’m going to propose to you properly one day. And that’s a promise” 

“I’ll hold you to that…and what’s with all the affection?! I’ve never been showered in so many kisses before” 

“What? I can’t show my love for you now?” 

“No” you giggled, “You can’t” 

“I just love this” he smiled, the rain coming to and turning into a very light mist, “You and me, sat here high above the rest of the world. Just the two of us. I can see why you like it up here so much” 

“You’ve come to your senses” you yawned, shuffling further down into a more comfortable position, still wrapped up in Davey’s arms. 

“You’ve made it so” he smiled, kissing the top of your head gently as he also made himself comfortable underneath all the blankets and in amongst the number of pillows he had brought up with him. 

“What else do you see in the future for us, Davey?” 

“Loads of things” he sighed, starting to stroke your hair as your eyes fluttered shut, “I think about waking up with you every morning. Waking up with you in my arms as the sun comes in through the windows. You’ll want five more minutes in bed each day so I’ll get up and make you some eggs or porridge or whatever we have in our little apartment for breakfast. You’ll wake up with your beautifully messy hair and we’ll have breakfast at the table overlooking the square outside the circulation gate. I’ll go to work in the morning and you’ll go to yours, at the theatre where you can put your talent and passion to work. We’ll meet at Jacobi’s for lunch, which will be more than just a glass of water each. We’ll arrive home at the same time and we’ll both collapse on our bed, taking a short nap before you make us the most amazing dinner each night and I’ll run you a hot bath that we’ll end up sharing because God knows we’re not that wealthy, and I don’t think we ever will be. We’ll end up going to bed every night at around 10 or 11, both exhausted, and we’ll fall asleep in each other's arms…like you already have” 

Davey looked down and saw you breathing deeply in sleep, your eyes softly shut and your snores barely audible. He smiled softly, kissing your cheek as he laid down on the pillows, carefully lying you down with him. He looked up into the night sky, the thunder had left, taking the lightning with him. The sky, instead, was littered with stars, and the moon shone brightly, illuminating your face perfectly to show everything he loved about you, which happened to be everything.

King João I of Portugal (Philippa of Lancaster’s husband)

10th Monarch of Portugal. Born in Lisbon, April 11, 1357, and died in the same city, August 14, 1433. He was the illegitimate son of King Pedro I and the lady Teresa Lourenço. In 1364 he was given the title Grand Master of the Order of Aviz. His adolescent years were spent entirely in Aviz. At 19, he fell in love with Inês Pires, with whom he had 2 children:

Afonso: Born in August 10th 1477/ Died in December 15th 1461:  Natural son and 1st Duke of Braganza.

Beatriz: Born in 1382/ Died in October 25th 1439:  Natural daughter. Countess of Arundel by marriage to Thomas Fitzalan, 12th Earl of Arundel. Countess of Huntingdon by marriage to John Holland, 2nd Earl of Huntingdon, later Duke of Exeter.

At this time he was beginning to make a name for himself in the running of the country’s affairs but it was on December 6, 1383, with his role in the death of the Count Andeiro that he truly gained recognition amongst the people.

He was crowned King of Portugal at the Cortes of Coimbra (council of the kingdom) on April 6, 1385 with the backing of men of good standing such as Nuno Álvares Pereira and João das Regras. On August 14, 1385 he faced the Castilian army in a battle which, despite being royal, would come to always be known as the Battle of Aljubarrota, where, with all the skill and military genius of the General of the Kingdom, Nuno Álvares Pereira, the enemy troops were defeated despite being in much greater number. To commemorate this victory and to fulfill the promise made to the Virgin, the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória was ordered to be built, in Batalha, and given to the Order of Saint Dominic.

He married Queen Filipa de Lencastre (Philippa of Lancaster), the daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, on February 2, 1387 and they had 8 children: 

Infanta Branca: Born in July 16th 1388/ Died in March 6th 1388:

Infante Afonso: Born In July 30th 1390/ Died in December 22nd 1400: He is buried in Braga Cathedral;

Duarte: Born in October 31st 1391/ Died in September 13th 1438:  Who succeeded him as King of Portugal;

Infante Pedro: Born in December 9th 1392/ Died in May 20th 1449:  Duke of Coimbra. Died in the Battle of Alfarrobeira;

Infante Henrique: Born in March 4th 1394/ Died in November 13th 1460:  Known as Henry the Navigator. Duke of Viseu and Grand Master of the Order of Christ;

Infanta Isabel: Born in February 21st 1397/ Died in December 11th 1471: Duchess consort of Burgundy by marriage to Philip III, Duke of Burgundy;

Infante João: Born in January 13th 1400/ Died in October 18th 1442: Constable of the Kingdom and grandfather of Isabella I of Castile; 

Infante Fernando: Born in September 29th 1402/ Died in June 5th 1443:  Grand Master of the Order of Aviz. Died in captivity in Fes, Morocco. 

João I was an unusually cultured king for his time. Raised as a child to run one of the most important military-religious orders of the country, he thus received thorough instruction. This went from detailed knowledge of the Catholic liturgy and doctrine, to bases of canonic law and public administration, as well as the military training of the order. He is the author of the ‘Livro da Montaria’/(the ‘Book of Hunting’) He decided to build his own Pantheon in the Monastery of Batalha, where his mortal remains still rest beside his wife, who first had been buried in Odivelas and only in 1416 was brought to the Founder’s Chapel.

This pantheon houses the greater part of the ‘Illustrious Generation’, in other words João’s children Pedro, Henrique, João and Fernando. His grandson, Afonso V, his great-grandson, João II, and his great-great-grandson, Prince Afonso are also laid to rest here.

Due to the way he governed the country, his legacy was one of “Good Memories”, and he ultimately became associated with this name. The motto “Pour bien”/’For good’ was also his.
