For fantasy recs: if you haven’t already, try Brandon Sanderson!! Mistborn is the best series to start with IMO but his Stormlight Archive series is an actual masterpiece (if you just want a comparatively quick stand-alone try Warbreaker)
STORMLIGHT ARCHIVES IS SOOO GOOD I DEVOURED THEM OVER WINTER BREAK!!!! I NEED IT TO BE 2024 STAT!!!

I really need to know, how many people know Brandon Sanderson on tumblr, how many are avid readers, and how many like me who base my life philosophy on them. Also I’m tagging a lot of tags that are in the genre but not Brandon’s books, because I want to reach more people.

my "im not reading that" list
please note: this is my list with my personal preferences. if you disagree, thats okay! however you will not change my mind. this isn't about good or bad, this is knowing i wont enjoy reading them
stephen king- i really cant do horror and one of his most famous characters shares my name and im just petty enough to care about that sorryyyyy
brandon sanderson- the amount of people who tell me to read his books is hysterical. ive tried mistborn three times. its not happening
neil gaiman- ive read like 6 of his books and 4 were for class please please let me read another author
song of ice and fire- this series sounds so unappealing to me and i also do not want to watch the series.
lies of locke lamora- i am not the target audience for this book, trust me on this
sarah j maas- ive heard acomaf was her best. thats where i ended and ive never looked back
flowers in the attic- no god why no please stop never
wheel of time- thats just too many books for me to commit to and i refuse to be ashamed of this fact
james patterson- maybe if he actually writes a book by himself ill finally forgive him for maximum ride

Hi! I love Spitfire and I was wondering if you have any recs of similar works that maybe inspired you or that also feature dragon romances? What sort of books do you like to read? Thanks, keep up with the good work!
thank you!
honestly the book that finally inspired me to write spitfire was Kushiel’s Dart, which i cannot honestly say is a similar reading experience and neither can i whole heartedly recommend it to people, even if they love spitfire.
it’s really not similar stylistically or in content, other than the fact that it’s extremely horny and full of wlw. if you want a very sex positive book with plot centric BDSM with a heaping of court intrigue and a heroine who finds strength in softness in a genuinely compelling way, kushiel’s dart might be for you.
however it’s also a book i would really strongly recommend looking up a trigger warnings list for. especially if you want to read all of the first trilogy and not just the first book. the third book contains some of the most genuinely upsetting material i have ever read, second i think to Kite Runner, to the point where i would honestly recommend most people to just read the first book, or to read a synopsis when they get to The Bad Place in book 3 (and trust me, you’ll know where that is).
now that i’ve finished talking about kushiel’s dart, here’s some other books, tho unfortunately none of them are all that similar, which is part of why i decided to write spitfire in the first place.
in other lands by sarah reese brennan, if you want teen queer romance with a bratty protagonist. this is one of my comfort books and i think the fact that it was first posted/published serially online gives it a similar feeling, in some ways, to spitfire.
for other books i enjoy that are not necessarily spitfire adjacent: gideon the ninth, sunshine (robin mckinley), mistborn, the traitor baru cormorant, the fifth season, ninth house (leigh bardugo), seven blades in black
for books that spitfire readers seem to enjoy (that i haven’t read yet but are next on my TBR once i’m in the headspace to read again): iron widow, hunger pangs, priory of the orange tree
for other books that did actually inspire spitfire but are definitely not similar reading experiences in the slightest, but iykyk: the golden compass/his dark materials trilogy, the pern books, the hero and the crown (or basically any book by robin mckinley)

Kelsier is literally soooo wild for making a plan to overthrow the all powerful immortal ruler where an essential part of that plan is him dying and then having his corpse eaten by an alien so he can be impersonated and it looks like he came back from the dead. Looney tunes ass plan

I read 32 new books this year, and will probably finish the 33rd this evening! and on top of that, I reread at least 34 books that I can remember (Modern Faerie Tales/Darkest Part of the Forest/FOTA, The Hero and the Crown, Scorpio Races, Scholomance, P&P, most of the Wimsey books, most of L&C, Assassin's Apprentice, Ronan of Rin, THG), for a grand total of 67!
new book list under the cut, books I would recommend marked with an asterisk:
*Royal Assassin, Robin Hobb Tempests and Slaughter, Tamora Pierce The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Suzanne Collins *Classic Scrapes, James Acaster *The Monsters We Defy, Leslye Penelope *Lord Peter Views the Body, Dorothy Sayers Arrows of the Queen, Mercedes Lackey *A Shilling for Candles, Josephine Tey *Busman’s Honeymoon, Dorothy Sayers Queen of Blood, Sarah Beth Durst Nine Liars, Maureen Johnson *The Mysterious Affair at Styles, *Murder on the Links, Agatha Christie Mistborn & The Well of Ascension, Hero of Ages, Brandon Sanderson Jennifer the Damned, Karen Ullo *Midnight for Charlie Bone, Jenny Nimmo *The Stolen Heir, Holly Black *The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne (Being an Account of Their Daring Exploits and Audacious Crimes), Jonathan Stroud Vespertine, Margaret Rogerson *Piranesi, Susanna Clarke *The Screaming Staircase, *The Whispering Skull, *The Hollow Boy, *The Creeping Shadow, & *The Empty Grave, Jonathan Stroud *Small Spaces, Katherine Arden *Anne of Windy Poplars, L.M. Babel by RF Kuang
The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah
A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows

Operation Grendel by Daniel Schwabauer (finish)
The Unanswered Questions by Lauren D. Fulter (reread but also it would be the new illustrated edition)
Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis
Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis
The Agaped Bearer by Hannah Lindsey
Riddle of Hearts by Rosie Grymm
Wizards of the Apoclaypse: The Forgotten Prophesy by X Zombie
Dragon School: First Flight by Sarah K.L. Wilson
North! Or Be Eaten by Andrew Peterson
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
Books I am eyeing but undecided:
The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Earth-treader by Alissa Zavalianos
Reckless by Cornelia Funke
Dune by Frank Herbert
Yesterday or Long Ago by Jenni Sauer
This list may change. These are just my thoughts as of 1/1/2024. And I plan to read more books than these, but I don't plan what I'm going to read. I just have an idea of some of what I currently want to read.
