I feel weird about Scamanda in a very “scam instead of murder cannot save true crime” way.
Like what she did was unquestioningly extremely bad behavior but also on a relatively small scale? I think the total that they got her for was like $100k? And now she is in jail for white collar crime and everyone is like “this is justice for people in my life who actually were affected by cancer” without looking at any of the big structures behind it? Just off the top of my head, medical costs in America, crowdfunding as a necessity for receiving healthcare, absolutely everything about that megachurch (how does money in that situation even move? do churches have an obligation to screen people to whom they facilitate donations?); was a FULL SWAT TEAM needed to raid a family home for evidence of, again, like a hundred thousand dollars in wire fraud? Does vindictiveness have a place in law enforcement (no but also would they have caught her if this wasn’t such a deeply personal trauma for the people who were looking)?
The bonus content is also so weird like it’s clearly kind of gossipy examples of some more weird Amanda behavior and at the end they’re like. Hope that helps your psychological understanding of this deep lot complex case. Like nah dude clearly none of us like this lady and we wanna hear some more weird shit she said.
I actually do like Nancy and think she came off as super professional, but also I was expecting her victims rights statement (at, again, a sentencing for white collar nonviolent crime?) to begin with like. The massive time and expense spent on from the order of protection lawsuit (which I think was $200k, iirc, which is almost twice what they convicted Amanda of?). And the fact that it wasn’t was like. Your family experience with cancer is haunting and tragic but also is are we possibly dislocating some of that reaction onto this (again, obviously vile) scammer lady?

Maybe I'm just a cynical bitch, but how did anyone fall for this?
Frustrating as hell, but definitely worth a listen

On this week’s Roundabout Roundup: Terri's shouting out the Special Olympics on the occasion of the New Jersey summer games. You can participate, volunteer, or just cheer on the athletes at an event near you. Nicole's listening to a podcast called Scamanda about a scammer named Amanda (see what they did there?), while Catherine's family is jumping on the charcuterie board train with the help of Boards: Stylish Spreads for Casual Gatherings. Thanks as always to Jon Morin for our fun in-and-out music, which you hear on every episode.

Thank you for the Who Trolled Amber podcast recommendation. I’ve recently started the first episode and I’m enjoying it immensely. Are there any other investigative journalism podcasts in a similar vein you recommend?
ooooh good question. these might not quite be in line but i do listen to a lot of analytical podcasts i find very edifying
any podcast by jamie loftus is excellent. i recently went through lolita podcast, but aack cast is one i revisit a lot. q anon anonymous is an investigative podcast about conspiracy theories, usually in the united states. they regularly do episodes with researched deep dives into specific topics within this sphere. the russell brand two-parter was fascinating.
spectacle: true crime was a great deep dive into true crime culture that i loved
60 songs that explain the 90s is a music podcast ON PAPER but it provides so much historical and cultural context to the songs it covers that i honestly think it's one of the podcasts ive learned the most from. rob harvilla is an amazing writer/orator too, very fun to listen to.
unsealed: the tylenol murders is a deep dive on a still-unsolved serial murder by contamination from the chicago tribune. but i will say it's VERY hard to listen to, especially the first episode where they go through the first deaths one by one. scamanda by lionsgate isnt really one i think you can LEARN from per se but i found it very engaging lmao
there are probably more i'm forgetting, but i hope you enjoy these!!!

I was tagged by my lovely wifey, @thehiddenbaroness. Thank you darling!
Are you named after anyone?
I am not!
2. When was the last time you cried?
Hmm, I'm not sure I can recall. I'm sure something as made me misty-eyed recently (a song or something), but nothing is springing to mind. I'm not really a crier, but that isn't to say crying is bad or weak.
3. Do you have kids?
I have four: two sons and two daughters. That's weird to type for some reason?
4. What sports do you play/have you played?
I've danced (I, too, consider that very much a sport) and played soccer. I am not a sporty gal, much to my own disappointment.
5. Do you use sarcasm?
Not especially, actually? Only when the occasion calls for it. ;)
6. What’s the first thing you notice about people?
it's probably whether or not they smile or soften their features if we make eye-contact.
7. What’s your eye color?
brown, baby
8. Scary movies or happy endings?
I don't like scary movies, so I suppose happy endings?
9. Any talents?
I'm a good teacher and I read aloud well.
10. Where were you born?
Louisiana.
11. What are your hobbies?
Writing, learning (French, embroidery, composting, history of fashion/clothing), word games like crosswords, listening to true crime podcasts (Cult Liter and Something Was Wrong as ongoing series; Scamanda, The Retrievals, and A Ghost Story as standalone series), binging audiobooks
12. Do you have any pets?
One Aussie named Noble, two cats named Babycat and Bagheera
13. How tall are you?
not tall LOL nearly 5'6"
14. Favorite subject in school?
Hmm, Speech, Theatre, English (those three being my degrees), history of any type, but specifically ancient civilizations and Euro History of the 18th and 19th centuries.
15. Dream job?
I haven't really decided yet. In some sort of literature job, maybe? A museum curator? Ooo art restorer! Honestly, though, I loved @thehiddenbaroness 's response: "I'd like to be occupied with love in its different forms, and for my time to be largely my own." Beautiful.
Tagging, but feel no pressure!
