Naturally Naked
“Nature loves to hide.” Heraclitus
In the winter, these ladies are wrapped in lush green manteaus that glisten in the rain. When warmer weather commences in late spring, their coats turn brown and eventually dry out. This is when we pull off their straps, leaving them lumpy and bumpy, hiding in plain sight. Sitting silently, they endure all measure of inconspicuousness. Then a sudden surprise transpires as they push their long slender necks skyward, shimmering in the summer sun.
Amaryllis belladonna–magic lily, resurrection lily, surprise lily–the stunning Naked Ladies have arrived! Just as most perennials in the garden have taken their final bow, these breathtaking bulbs fill my orchard and garden with their picture-perfect pink flowers. What began with the gift of a single bulb many years ago, has metamorphosed into a fabulous field of dreams because every season I dig up a few bulbs to plant in other areas.
Amaryllis belladonna is the botanical name of the flower, “Naked Lady”. Belladonna means “beautiful lady” in Italian. These plants are called Naked Ladies because of their unique bloom pattern. In the winter, the bulbs produce a bounty of beautiful, shiny green leaves like the leaves of agapanthus. Those leaves wither and die in spring around the same time that the strappy leaves of daffodils are browning. With so many bulbs, it takes me a while to remove and compost the dead leaves. With the leaves gone, dirt-colored bulbs resemble rough turtle shells as their rounded heads form clusters. In August, single stems sprout from the ground. Finally, flowers emerge at the top of the stems giving them a striking appearance as if they’re "naked" because they are standing alone without leaves.
Here are some key things to know about Naked Ladies:
I adore my Naked Ladies for filling my landscape with their distinctive, eye-catching blooms, and their ability to thrive and naturalize with minimal maintenance. Nature hides their beauty when only the bulb is visible. They then sprout as my naturally naked summer stunners.
My favorite showy summer tree is the crape myrtle. Lagerstroemia, native to Asia, provides year-round interest and is a popular choice in gregarious garden design. Here’s why I recommend crape myrtles.
Because of the combination of a long flowering period, beautiful foliage, gorgeous naked bark, and adaptable nature, the crape myrtle is my beloved tree.
Nature may like to hide but with the naturally naked Amaryllis belladonnas and Lagerstroemias in full bloom in my garden, the curtain has been pulled wide open and the spectacle is a showstopper.

Back-To School Kindness
Learn more while being kind and inclusive!
CYNTHIA BRIAN
MIRACLE MOMENT®
Choose to be kind over being right,
and you'll be right every time.
~ Richard Carlson
A MESSAGE from Founder/Executive Director, CYNTHIA BRIAN
The break for summer vacation flew by and this week many students are on their way back to the classroom. It’s been a hot and tumultuous two months of weather and politics. Hopefully, you found ways and days to relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy family and friends in peace.
Getting back into the groove of school schedules takes discipline and determination. While we are buying supplies, and clothes, or signing up for special classes, a critical ingredient to getting along and acclimating is to remember to be kind. Kindness is the gift we give to ourselves and others,
With so much divisiveness in our world today, teaching and modeling a sense of graciousness and inclusivity for our children will go a long way to helping them make friends and delight in learning.
It is easy to be kind. Smile, listen, pay attention, wave, connect, share, care, be fair, be grateful, be authentic, compliment. We all have the power of kindness within. Let that power shine.
Join us at the Pear and Wine Festival as well as the parade on Saturday, September 28th for our 25th anniversary celebration and kindness commemoration of our win as the 2024 Nonprofit of the Year!
Make this school year the most kind learning experience ever.
Sending kindness, gratitude, and success,
Cynthia Brian

KINDERGARTEN KINDNESS
by Karen Kitchel
Spending time as a volunteer in Kindergarten is a wonderful way to absorb the important things in life.  One day I saw a very tearful little girl saying how much she was missing her Dad. It took about 30 seconds for another student to offer her a teddy bear, which she said was given to her when she was a baby.  Amazing how the tears stopped, and I saw a perfect picture of kindness.
For six years, I’ve had the privilege of watching five-year-old kids learn how to read, write, and most important, be there for a friend in need.
When asked how they will be kind, kindergarteners’ responses included: Help Mom, Share my Football, and Help Others.  I believe these kids understand the true meaning of scattering kindness.
Karen Kitchel is the Kindness Coordinator volunteer with BTSYA. She purchased the book, No Barnyard Bullies, as a gift for every kindergarten student where she is a volunteer teacher. www.scatteringkindness.com  You can read more about Karen’s adoption story in the book Be the Star You Are! Millennials To Boomers. https://www.bethestaryouare.org/book-gift

Speaking and Debating
“You can speak well if your tongue can deliver the message of your heart.”-John Ford
Does your stomach turn into circles if you must give a speech? How do you react when you must debate someone? Our two teen hosts, Julia and Keerthi, are accomplished speakers and debaters and they have plenty of useful tips to keep you from “dying.” Julia recently gave a Tedx talk that had her jittering in her boots. Keerthi is spearheading the Be the Star You Are!® debate collaboration with Eloquence. Both advise you to stay confident in your knowledge and the importance of your message. Authenticity resonates with audiences more than perfection. Julia heads to the airport to catch a flight for South Africa where she is performing with her choral group while Keerthi introduces our newest reporter, Hasini Ramala with her segment Teen talk!. Hasini feels right at home on the radio talking about storytelling and the importance for teens to share their real lives. Cherry Picking
Life is just a bowl of cherries. So live and laugh at it all.” Lyrics by Lew Brown, Sung by Rudy Vallée, 1931
The birds are flocking to the two trees. Every day I watch them devour my precious, unripe fruit, as I impatiently wait for the sunshine to turn the orbs into deep reds and purple. Finally, I can’t take it anymore. I grab my pruning shears and put on my boots, taking a colander.

To the orchard I tramp eager to pick as many cherries as possible before all are eaten by my feathered friends. The Queen Anne’s are almost ripe, but the Bings are still small. Nevertheless, I fill my colander to the brim
.
Because of a miniscule harvest last summer, I cut back my trees by a third. This June, my efforts were rewarded with a bounty of sweet cherries, even enough to share with the flying acrobats. Most people are familiar with Bing cherries sold in supermarkets. The deep red-purple black colored Bings are firm, juicy, and known for their rich sweet taste with a hint of tartness. Compared to the Bings, the mild, honeyed flavored, and lesser-known Queen Anne varieties are crunchier, marbled with bright red and yellow hues. Like the birds, I gobble them fresh from the branch. When I was a kid, our family always worked on neighboring farms picking cherries, which usually ripened in late May. The pay was minimal, but the perks included opportunities to eat these delectable fruits as we filled the buckets for sale. One year my siblings and I competed for who could pick the most cherries in the fashion of “one in my mouth, one in the bucket.” Becoming painfully sick, we all paid the price of our childishness. For years, none of us could tolerate the sight of a single cherry.
As adults, we laugh at our bowl of cherries mishap. We are again enamored of this luscious crop and enjoy it in salads, pies, and jams, eating in moderation. The birds have been dropping the pits throughout my garden where small cherry trees are sprouting.
Because of our mild winters and hot summers, we can expect a wide range of blooms this summer. Stunning clematis experiences its second seasonal display, climbing and covering a pipe. Like most plants, clematis prefers well-drained soil filled with rich organic matter. Once clematis is established, it is relatively low maintenance, requiring minimal water, occasional fertilizer, and pruning to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Roses bloom profusely in my garden adding beauty and perfume, while the common corn-flags add spires of fuchsia pink torches. My perennial, spicy-scented Asiatic lilies attract pollinators with captivating fragrances amidst big, bold blooms. Although these lilies make gorgeous bouquets, as the splendid stars of my garden, I am loathe to cut any!
The fern-like foliage of yarrow adds visual interest while improving drainage with its deep roots that assist in breaking up compacted clay. The leaves accumulate nutrients making yarrow an excellent compost companion. By attracting pollinators and ladybugs, yarrow increases biodiversity, promoting a healthier ecosystem. As a medicinal plant with compounds containing anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and analgesic properties, yarrow has for centuries been used to treat wounds, alleviate symptoms of colds and fevers, and reduce the pain of insect bites.
The edible flowers and leaves of nasturtium add a peppery punch to salads, sandwiches, and sides. These “Nonna” plants, as I call them because they grew in my grandmother’s gardens, are easily grown from seed. Their dense flowers and foliage can cascade over walls, fences, and raised beds, or create a living mulch as a ground cover to suppress weeds. Nasturtiums attract beneficial insects that control unwanted pests including aphids, whiteflies, and squash bugs.
To bring vibrant color to your patio or porch, plant a container of bright red geraniums. Geraniums will grow in full sun or partial shade, easily root from cuttings, and require very minimal care. Prune back spent flowers or leggy stems to encourage bushier blooms that will continue through the fall. Geraniums are the no-fail June boon.
Are you finding a plethora of spider webs in your landscape? Congratulations! Gardens that avoid chemical pesticides tend to have a higher spider population. As a natural pest control, spiders help to maintain a balance between predator and prey species. Although it is unnerving to run head-first into a nearly invisible web, I welcome these hunters of mosquitoes, flies, aphids, beetles, and more.
Despite the prevalent trend to rip out lawns to minimize water usage in fire-prone areas, having a well-maintained, cut to three inches or less green grass area adds a defensible space to homes, reducing the risk of ignition and spread of a wildfire. Although no landscaping choice is fire-proof, a healthy, mowed, and watered lawn, may reduce the amount of combustible material available to fuel a fire. Lawns are visually appealing and offer a restful environment providing a refreshing respite to our eyes from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Whether in a park or a small backyard, a lawn soothes the senses and invites people to play. Cartwheels, croquet, picnics, and stargazing connect us to the natural elements.
Sitting on green grass is the perfect place to eat a bowl full of cherries. So live and laugh at it all.
Happy Gardening. Happy Growing. Happy June Boon!

Showers of Flowers, It’s Okay, Travel Tech
Tune in LIVE weekly to the upbeat, positive lifestyle broadcast where producer and host Cynthia Brian showcases strategies for success on StarStyle®-Be the Star You Are!®. Available wherever you listen to your favorite programs!
Everything is coming up roses with showers of flowers in every garden. The weeds are still being pulled, but the blooms are on steroids in Cynthia Brian’s garden. Cynthia’s optimism for a great summer is at an all-time high because the hills are still green, beauty is bountiful, the birds are singing, butterflies are flitting about, and my garden smells like a perfume factory. Between the night jasmine and the fragrant roses, the aromas in the air spray the scents of botanical incense.
In writing her inaugural children’s book, “It’s Okay Not to Know,” Brenda Do intentionally created inclusive characters that all children can relate to. The story features whimsical characters untethered by race, gender, socioeconomic status, and physical ability. Cynthia Brian interviews Brenda about her children’s book.
Summer is almost here and people will be traveling. What are the essential tech gear that you need to pack? Happy travels.
Follow StarStyle®:
Bio: Brenda Do
As a Chinese girl growing up in 1970s America, Brenda noticed that none of the books at school and in libraries featured characters who looked like her. Even at that young age, the lack of diversity made her feel excluded. Even worse, it planted a seed that she wasn’t as good as the kids pictured in the books.
So, in writing her inaugural children’s book, “It’s Okay Not to Know,” Brenda intentionally created inclusive characters that all children can relate to. The story features whimsical characters untethered by race, gender, socioeconomic status, and physical ability.
As a seasoned copywriter, Brenda expertly distills complex social-emotional learning themes into accessible narratives. “You know how adults often look back at their younger selves and think, If I only knew then what I know now...? I wrote this book to offer some of that knowledge. So, our young ones can get a head start at living their best lives,” she said.
Brenda’s goal is to provide caregivers with language that helps young learners feel confident even in moments of ambiguity and courageously face new experiences. Links

Summer Splash
MIRACLE MOMENT®
StarStyle® Empowerment is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
“If children grew up according to early indications, we should have nothing but geniuses.”
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
A MESSAGE from Founder/Executive Director, CYNTHIA BRIAN
Who will be the first in the pool? Within a few days, schools will be out for the summer. As the warmer days of the season approach, our children are focused on fun in the sun. We need those summer splashes but we also need to maintain our educational achievements.
On average, students suffer a learning loss during their vacation. Some students sign up for three or four-week summer programs.  However, studies indicate that to yield a measurable academic benefit, instruction needs to be for three hours a day for at least five weeks.
Taking time off to recuperate, rest, repair, and play is equally important for a healthy body, mind, and spirit. Families want to spend time together, take a vacation, travel, or enjoy time at home. Taking a vacation reduces stress, improves moods and sleep, and increases the bond in family relationships by making memories. The bottom line is that taking a time out will boost your happiness.
To reduce learning loss for all ages, choose to read stimulating books. Students can join our Star Teen Book Review Team to write a review that will be published after a book is read. Our talented Book Review Coordinator, Stephanie Cogeos, evaluates each review submitted for accuracy and provides feedback to the writer. It is then published at http://www.btsya.com/book_reviews. To be considered for the team, a volunteer questionnaire must be submitted and approved. The Star Teen Book Review Team is one of the most popular and productive outreach programs BTSYA provides for teens to reduce learning loss at any time. Check out the program.
Our two award-winning radio shows, StarStyle® and Express Yourself! Teen Radio broadcasts weekly all summer with new episodes, so check the lineup and tune in for unapologetically authentic information and edutainment. Live, learn, laugh!
Here at Be the Star You Are!® we are still basking in the limelight of our Moraga win as the 2024 Nonprofit of the Year. We will continue celebrating all year, and we encourage you to mark your calendars for Saturday, September 28 as Be the Star You Are!® continues the party by participating in a parade, ribbon cutting, and the Pear and Wine Festival.
Congratulations to all the graduates from pre-school through grad school! Be a genius and continue to be kind!
May you have a marvelous summer with enchanting festivities filled with family and friends frolicking. Live fully, laugh loudly, love boldly, and learn daily.
Make a Splash! It’s summer!
With gratitude for your support.
Sending love and peace,

SUMMER KINDNESS
by Karen Kitchel
Summer is a time of year when smiles seem to be abundant.  It might have something to do with the intoxicating scent of flowers or the virtually cloudless and miraculously bright blue sky. Adding to this sunny state can be a satisfying feeling of knowing you’ve just made someone’s day.
Here are a few simple summer kindness ideas:
Interrupt the ordinary
Think about the people who help you get life done (trash collector, mail delivery person, etc.) Interrupt them on an ordinary day with a bottle of sparkling water or a candy bar and a “Thanks for what you do.”
Ice cream scattering
While at the grocery store, pick up a box of popsicles or ice cream bars and drop them off at a local shelter or food shelf for the volunteers.  All you have to say is “Enjoy!”
A line to say to make someone’s day
“You are really good at what you do!”
Kindness cards
Make up a few note cards to keep in your car or purse to randomly give to those wonderful folks who keep restrooms clean, police officers, teachers, or those who make your life a bit better. Cards can say things like: “You are appreciated” or “Thanks for all you do!”
Karen Kitchel is the Kindness Coordinator volunteer with BTSYA. She purchased the book, No Barnyard Bullies, as a gift for every kindergarten student where she is a volunteer teacher. www.scatteringkindness.com

Weeding, Managing Life, Mindfulness
Tune in LIVE weekly to the upbeat, positive lifestyle broadcast where producer and host Cynthia Brian showcases strategies for success on StarStyle®-Be the Star You Are!®. Available wherever you listen to your favorite programs!
Before the weather gets too warm and the soil hardens, we must eradicate weeds from our landscapes. A weed is just a plant growing somewhere it is not wanted. Depending on where we live and how we cultivate, determines the perspective we may have about what is a weed and what is wanted a specimen. Goddess Gardener, Cynthia Brian, walks us through the garden chores.
Are you an on-time person? Are your organized? Or are you constantly losing things? If you are feeling that your life is out of control, the time is now to take charge and make changes.
Mindfulness is a term that we hear about all the time. Is there wisdom in our senses? Mindfulness has been linked with more happiness, less stress, and more resilience. Want to try it out?
