This one's a day early because I'm trying to build up a buffer while I'm in the zone.

A Hawk’s Winter Watch
Tumblr media
I looked out the back door this morning and this sharp shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus) high in a tall bare tree and the edge of the forest about 100 meters away. I grabbed my camera and went out in my slippers to get photos. I only went as far as the back fence. The morning is dark and cloudy, so the light was not optimal, and the bird was little more than a silhouette to the naked eye, but I still managed a halfway decent image.
'Backyard bird feeders do attract Sharp-shinned Hawks from time to time. Most bird watchers prefer to discourage this behavior, although studies indicate that feeders don’t greatly increase a bird’s chances of being taken by a Sharp-shinned Hawk—the hawks get the great majority of their diet elsewhere. If a hawk starts hunting regularly in your yard, the best thing to do is to take down your feeders for a couple of weeks.' - allaboutbirds.org

COOL FIND! Mourning Dove, possibly killed by the Sharpie (Sharp-Shinned Hawk) I’ve been seeing around campus lately

Also, the moon is really pretty right now. Say hello to her if you can. Sometimes I think about how we all see the same moon and go… huh. Isn’t that neat.

Sharp shinned hawk

2/18/2024: Saw this bird this afternoon. Never seen one before. Had to look him/her up. Beautiful bird. Looks similar to a Cooper's hawk only smaller and with white markings on the wings. This is one of those situations were I wish I had a better camera with lots of zoom. But, all I have is my phone. Anyway, this is in Clearfield, Utah.

A Hawk’s Private Moment
Tumblr media
I caught this sharp shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus) grooming itself. I looked up as if to say, "yes can I help you?"
"Sharp-shinned Hawks carry their prey to a stump or low branch to pluck it before eating. Swallowing feathers is not normal for them, as it is for owls." - allaboutbirds.org
@birdcounter
You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.
Take a look: https://swede1952-photographs.pixels.com

A juvenile sharp shinned hawk hung out on this lawn chair in my yard the other day!!!!
It was such a good model it just stood still and posed for like 20 minutes!! Then it pooped on the lawn chair and I missed getting a pic of it flying away😔and then it immediately flew into my neighbors window! But it kept going and flew away so I guess it was ok yay!
I’m pretty sure it was a sharp shinned hawk. They kind of look exactly like coopers hawks. Either way I’ve never seen a sharp shinned or coopers hawk before!!

It’s Henry the Christmas Hawk! He’s one of Santa’s Special Ops. He goes around neighborhood to neighborhood, silently observing. Henry is sent by Santa for his tough cases that are harder to determine whether someone is naughty or nice.
Don’t believe me? As I circled back around, searching for the elusive lad, he came swooping by right past my neighbor’s head, and he didn’t even realize it. (It’s true!) That’s how good Henry is during his work.
It’s a rarity for him to be spotted during his work. But, it’s part of my investigative journalism to make this special operation public. Due to confidentiality concerning Santa’s naughty or nice list, I will not be revealing Henry’s location.
In closing, be nice…or else.
