Shiva doesn't fit the usual descriptions of a Vedic deity. He is honored in various traditions like Vedic, Agamic, tribal, and rural, being seen as the Lord of the Universe (Isvara or Parameswara) or a passive deity in some Shakta traditions. People worship his pleasant and fierce forms using different methods.
Shiva is not only worshipped in temples but also in cremation grounds, near funeral pyres. Despite being known as pure and auspicious (Shivam), he also roams in unclean places, symbolizing his sameness, inviolability, incorruptibility, omniscience, and omnipresence.

Shivaratri 2024: Time and Date
Lord Shiva, one of Hinduism's most important deities, is honored during Maha Shivaratri, also called the Great Night of Shiva. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, it falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of the month of Phalguna, which is usually in February or March.
Maha Shivaratri holds immense importance in Hinduism as it is believed to be the day when Lord Shiva performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. Devotees believe that observing Maha Shivaratri with devotion and austerity can cleanse them of their sins and grant them blessings, including spiritual upliftment and liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

The sacred anticipation for Shivratri begins today, with eleven days remaining (Ekadasi Rudra), guided by the divine influence of Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra - the celestial alignment marking the solemn union of Shiva and Parvati.
In this spiritually charged period, it is auspicious to embark on a fasting journey leading up to Shivratri, a practice aligned with personal devotion. Alongside, devotees are encouraged to immerse themselves in the reverent repetition of the Namah Shivaya (Panchakshari mantra), aiming for a profound cumulative recitation of 500,000 times or as much as one's spiritual dedication allows. May these sacred observances invoke divine blessings and deepen the connection with the eternal consciousness of Lord Shiva.
