"Eugh. I fuckin hate seafood…"

The first time I said it after I moved to California I felt something weird happen. It was in Brent's shitty just-outside-LA apartment.

"Yeah, same dude. Let's get Indian." Jeremy put no thought into it. It's just how he felt. So why did it make me angry?

"No you don't," I almost said. Maybe it's the T firing me up, who knows.

"What?"

"You don't hate seafood." I say again.

"Yes I do…? The texture of fish is gross, and that fishy taste makes me want to vom."

"Sure, fish tastes bad to you but you don't understand. You don't fucking hate seafood." I don't even know what I mean.

My mom puts her hand on my back, as if to tell me not to engage with it. But almost on que my asshole unc chimes in from down the table, "what's da problem, a lil bug never hurt nobody." He's shaking a crawfish at me with that almost-smile he does. Its insect legs are in full view.

My stomach turns, "I thought you were gonna just make me a steak."

Brent chimes in "I will, I'll start it in just a second. Just let me finish ordering." He types the rest of his address into DoorDash and starts scanning through the menus.

In 15 minutes I remind him again, "hey don't forget the steak."

"Oh shit my bad dude. Yeah let me start the grill." He slides his way around the crawfish pot and starts up his air fryer.

"Wait I just realized" he said "aren't you from New Orleans? How do you hate–"

"Slidell."

"Huh?"

"I'm from Slidell actually, but uh… yeah, close enough."

"Oh gotcha."

"… It's like the distance from here to LA."

"Right, right." He starts seasoning the steaks on a plate. I lost my appetite after the crawfish thing, but I guess it's just a matter of principle at this point. "So like what did you even eat down there if you don't like seafood?"

"Idk, just the same as you I guess." I never know what people mean by that. What, you think McDonald's is different in Louisiana?

"Right. Yeah okay, I guess so."

"What, your mamma don't cook?" My ex boyfriend drops himself into the couch where Jeremy was sitting before.

"No, no, she's cooking. It's just, she does seafood gumbo on Christmas every year, so I just get McDonald's." I explain.

"K____, I told you I can make you a steak instead," my mom shouts from the crawfish table. My name is Charles not K____. Whatever. I'd rather just eat before I show up, so I ignore her.

Brent goes on, "right I mean, I guess McDonald's is McDonald's." He drops the steak into the air fryer with a hiss.

I didn't actually tell Jeremy that he doesn't hate seafood. I don't even know what that would mean.

Jeremy walks back into the room after a few minutes, "Sorry about that, that was my mom. She just told my grandpa about my transition."

"Oh shit dude, how'd it go?"

"He was surprisingly chill."

I miss my mom. I don't really hear from family anymore.

The first hit goes straight to his head. Metaphorically speaking. The first hit is fire in his lungs that hadn’t held anything thicker than a Parliament cigarette in months. Adrian can’t see who is calling him through the shattered screen. He tosses it in the backseat of the SUV and does another line. The windows are down and Adrian’s head pokes halfway out of the window as Lake Pontchartrain rolls beneath them. 

“Where are we?”

“Where are we going?”

“There’s a house show in Biloxi, dude. You ever play those kinda shows?”

“Fuck, all the time man. Where’s my phone?”

“Shit, man. Did you leave it at the apartment?”

The driver’s side door slams shut and someone reaches through the window to open the door because there is no inside handle. Broken off and left behind in another lifetime. When Adrian stumbles out of the car, his feet hit sand and he can taste the salt in the air. The house is more of a condo, but no one is listening when he tells them that. Even though, for some reason, the difference is important to him. Across the street--beyond the wasteland of run down cars-- there’s nothing but sand and ocean, the sound of the waves muted by the electric whine of poorly assembled amps inside.

The copy of himself is right there. On the edge of his fingertips and it’s not too late. Adrian can grab hold if he stretches out just a little he can bring himself safely back together.

“You got a phone?”

“It’s dead. There’s one in the house I bet.” 

But when the door closes behind him, Adrian feels that part of him float away.

Today we remember the passing of Clarence Gatemouth Brown who Died: September 10, 2005 in Orange, Texas

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown was an American musician from Louisiana and Texas known for his work as a blues musician, as well as other styles of music. He spent his career fighting purism by synthesizing old blues, country, jazz, Cajun music and R&B styles.

His work also encompasses rock and roll, rock music, folk music, electric blues, and Texas blues.

He was an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, who played an array of musical instruments, including the guitar, fiddle, mandolin, viola, harmonica and drums. He won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album in 1983 for his album, Alright Again!. He is regarded as one of the most influential exponents of blues fiddle and has had enormous influence in American fiddle circles.

Brown's biggest musical influences were Louis Jordan, T-Bone Walker, and Count Basie. His highly original guitar style influenced many blues and rock guitarists, including Guitar Slim, Albert Collins, and Johnny "Guitar" Watson.

Brown was born in Vinton, Louisiana, and raised in Orange, Texas. His professional music career began in 1945, playing drums in San Antonio, Texas. He was given the nickname "Gatemouth" by a high school teacher who said he had a "voice like a gate". His career was boosted when he attended a concert by T-Bone Walker in Don Robey's Bronze Peacock Houston nightclub in 1947; Walker became ill, and Brown took up his guitar and quickly wrote and played "Gatemouth Boogie", to the delight of the audience.

In 1949 Robey founded Peacock Records in order to showcase Brown's virtuoso guitar work. Brown's "Mary Is Fine" backed with "My Time Is Expensive" was a hit for Peacock in 1949. A string of Peacock releases in the 1950s were less successful commercially, but were nonetheless pioneering musically. Particularly notable was the 1954 instrumental "Okie Dokie Stomp", in which Brown solos continuously over a punchy horn section (other instrumentals from this period include "Boogie Uproar" and "Gate Walks to Board"). "Okie Dokie Stomp" was also recorded by Cornell Dupree in the 1970s, who also had a commercial success with it. As for his gutsy violin playing, Robey allowed Brown to record "Just Before Dawn", his final release on the Peacock label, in 1959.

In the 1960s Brown moved to Nashville, Tennessee to participate in a syndicated R&B television show, and while he was there recorded several country singles. He struck up a friendship with Roy Clark and made several appearances on the television show Hee Haw. In 1966, Brown was the musical director for the house band on the short-lived television program, The !!!! Beat.

However, in the early 1970s several countries in Europe had developed an appreciation for American roots music, especially the blues, and Brown was a popular and well-respected artist there. He toured Europe twelve times, beginning in 1971 and continuing throughout the 1970s. He also became an official ambassador for American music, and participated in several tours sponsored by the U.S. State Department, including an extensive tour of Eastern Africa. Brown appeared at the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival, where he jammed with American blues rock band Canned Heat. In 1974, he recorded as a sideman with the New Orleans pianist Professor Longhair on his album, Rock 'N' Roll Gumbo (originally a Blue Star Records release). He moved to New Orleans in the late 1970s. In 1979, through his manager at the time, Jim Halsey, Brown embarked on a 6-week, 44 concert tour of the Soviet Union. This was an historic event as it marked the first time the Soviet Union made a contract with a U.S. private citizen (Jim Halsey) as regards a musical tour. All previous tours were under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. To date, this was by far the most extensive tour an American band had taken in the USSR.

In the 1980s, a series of releases on Rounder Records and Alligator Records revitalized his U.S. career, and he toured extensively and internationally, usually playing between 250 and 300 shows a year. He won a Grammy in 1982 for the album Alright Again! and was nominated for five more. Alright Again! is credited with putting Brown back on the musical map. He also won eight W. C. Handy Awards. In 1999, Brown was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.

In his last years, he maintained a full touring schedule, including Australia, New Zealand, South America, Africa and Eastern Europe. His final record Timeless was released in 2004.

In September 2004, Brown was diagnosed with lung cancer. He already had emphysema and heart disease, and he and his doctors decided to forego treatment for the cancer. This greatly affected his musical career. His home in Slidell, Louisiana, was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, although he had been evacuated to his childhood hometown of Orange, Texas before the storm hit. He died there on September 10, 2005, at the apartment of a grandniece, at the age of 81. Brown is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery in Orange. Flooding caused by Hurricane Ike in September 2008 damaged his grave. His casket was one of dozens that floated out of their burial sites. His grave has since been refurbished and through the estate funds, a headstone has been erected in his honor. A marker honoring Brown was placed by the Texas Historical Commission next to the flagpole at Hollywood Cemetery.

The rock composer Frank Zappa, in his autobiography, The Real Frank Zappa Book (1989), credited Brown, along with Guitar Slim and Johnny "Guitar" Watson, as important influences on his guitar playing.

On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown among hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire.

Jayne Mansfield’s Final Rest

Finding a big heart-shaped tombstone in a little boneyard like Fairview Cemetery in Pen Argyl shouldn’t be too difficult-except that an inordinate number of graves there seem to have heart-shaped markers. After wandering around many graves checking out false leads, the Weird Pennsylvania research team finally found the resting-place of movie queen Jayne Mansfield. Like Jayne’s persona, the marker is large, over the top, and just a bit tacky. 

In fact, Jayne was too big for just one memorial. This grave is one of three places that celebrate the life and untimely death of the buxom blonde who in her day had rivaled Marilyn Monroe. Naturally, there’s a cenotaph in Hollywood, and there’s also a death-site marker in Slidell, Louisiana, where Jayne’s 1966 Buick Electra had plowed into a tractor-trailer obscured by a fog of insecticide spray. Rumors spread that Jayne was decapitated and that her head is buried in Hollywood Forever Memorial Park. Not true. Although she died of severe head wounds, all of Jayne lies buried just off South Main Street in Pen Argyl. It’s almost homecoming, for while she achieved fame as a Tinseltown sex symbol, Jayne was born a hundred miles or so south of Pen Argyl, in Bryn Mawr. 

At first, we thought there was nothing weird about the giant heart grave, given that giant hearts are a common motif in this part of the afterworld. Then we saw the fresh flowers and teddy bears placed there, almost forty years after her death. The groundskeeper at the cemetery stopped his weed whacking and strolled over to us. “I could have saved you some wandering if you’d asked me where she was,” he commented. “We get people coming to see her almost every day.” 

We felt somewhat awkward about this, as if we might be taken for fanatics, and we mumbled something about just passing through. The groundskeeper nodded clearly skeptical. “One fellow was here last week with a huge bouquet of flowers,” he said, and added with a note of disbelief in his voice, “He left her a card.” Slowly he raised his hand and tapped his fingers three times against his temple. Then he turned around away and fired up the weed whacker again. 

Yep, there’s something weird about this grave all right. It’s the fans.

Master of Disasters

When Steve Slepcevic was 5 years old, his father asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up.

Young Slepcevic said he did not know. But his father did.

“He said, `You’re going to be a doctor. So tell people to call you Dr. Steve,”‘ Slepcevic, more than three decades later, recalled his father saying. “So people started calling me Dr. Steve.”

But Slepcevic eventually dropped the nickname. The son of strict Serbian immigrant parents never made it to medical school.

Instead, he dropped out of Hawthorne High School in the 11th grade to pursue a career in construction.

“I was probably 15 or 16 when I made my mind up that I loved framing and building and being in the outdoors,” Slepcevic said. “And I don’t think he was disappointed because he saw that I was good at it.”

Today, Slepcevic, 50, owns Paramount Disaster Recovery, a Rolling Hills Estates construction company that specializes in rebuilding businesses and homes hit by disaster.

He also organizes conferences to teach businesses and institutions how to deal with natural and man-made disasters.

Slepcevic organized conferences in 12 cities nationwide last year and expects another dozen this year. Attendance ranged from about 150 to 200 at each event, with representatives from businesses, government agencies, hospitals, universities and other institutions attending.

Speakers discuss such topics as data recovery, evacuation plans, stabilizing a building and dealing with insurance companies.

“I found that the businesses that had their plans in place, they had a better chance of recovering than those that didn’t,” he said. “So I set up a second company that has an educational conference called the Disaster Preparedness Summit. Those who respond quickly and effectively save a ton of money and reopen quicker.”

Slepcevic’s first experience with a hurricane came in 1992, when he went to Florida for a project after Hurricane Andrew. He rebuilt a retirement home owned by the parents of a friend.

“It was my first taste of wide-area disaster recovery,” Slepcevic said. “I had done fires and floods in California but on an individual basis. After Florida, I started to realize I wanted to do more wide-area disaster recovery.”

He went on to do work in the aftermath of other hurricanes and disasters, including the 1994 Northridge earthquake and Hurricane Katrina in 2005 on the Gulf Coast.

Slepcevic said he did about $18 million in renovation work from the Northridge quake and $8 million to $9 million from a massive 1995 Texas hail storm.

The Southern California wildfires have kept him “really busy,” he said.

But he has also lost money on some projects.

“I worked Katrina, and we had an office set up in Slidell, La. We made money, but we also lost money because we had some clients who didn’t pay,” he said. “I’m still collecting.”

Slepcevic was born in Akron, Ohio, the middle child between four sisters. The family moved to California a year later.

At 12 years old, he began to help out after school and on weekends with his uncles, who were general contractors.

“At 12 years old, digging ditches and pouring concrete was the norm,” he said.

By the time he was in high school, Slepcevic often worked until 9 or 10 at night.

“At that time, I recognized he had a gift for it,” said his uncle Batta Vujicic who now owns Prime Development in Westlake Village. “And he loved the field. He made a passionate jump into it. And I thought that was going to hold him on for years to come.”

Slepcevic took his first solo project at age 17. His friend’s parents in Hawaii wanted to build a two-car garage.

In about eight days, Slepcevic, with the help of his friend, built the garage.

“There was no money to be made. They gave me room and board and the flight (ticket),” Slepcevic said. “My whole thing is I wanted to get done and get out there and surf.”

Slepcevic then started his own business and bid on his uncles’ jobs while taking engineering and design classes at El Camino College.

“I was doing framing, windows, cabinets, doors,” he recalled.

By 1989, he had acquired his own business license and named his Hawthorne firm Paramount Construction.

He built homes and shopping centers. He eventually began to complete unfinished construction projects that were abandoned by the owner after a foreclosure.

He also started to work on homes that were damaged by fire or flood.

Slepcevic relocated his business to Rolling Hills Estates in 1999.

In 2002, as his disaster work grew, he began Paramount Disaster Recovery.

He says the disaster work is more satisfying.

“I realized, even going to Katrina and seeing people’s faces of confusion and not knowing what they were going to do, these people needed someone to lead them out of their situation,” Slepcevic said.

Residents Flee As Gulf Coast Sees Possible Tandem Hurricanes

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Gulf Coast braced Sunday for a potentially devastating hit from twin hurricanes as two strong storms swirled toward the U.S from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Officials feared a history-making onslaught of life-threatening winds and flooding along the coast, stretching from Louisiana into Alabama.

A storm dubbed Marco grew into a hurricane Sunday as it moved up the Gulf of Mexico toward Louisiana. Another potential hurricane, Tropical Storm Laura, lashed the Dominican Republic and Haiti and was targeting the same region of the U.S. coast.

The strength of tropical storms can ebb and flow, but it could be the first time two hurricanes form in the Gulf of Mexico simultaneously, according to records dating to at least 1900, said Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach.

“What we know is there’s going to be storm surge from Marco, we know that that water is not going to recede hardly at all before Laura hits, and so we’ve not seen this before and that’s why people need to be paying particular attention,” Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said at a Sunday briefing.

With the potential the storms could overlap, parts of Louisiana, especially in south-central portions of the state, could see rainfall up to 2 feet, said Benjamin Schott, meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service’s Slidell, Louisiana, office.

Along the main drag on the barrier island of Grand Isle, south of New Orleans, Starfish Restaurant manager Nicole Fantiny could see an exodus of people driving off the island.

“They are all packing up and leaving,” she said, speaking of the many people who own homes on the island and come out for vacations and weekend trips.

Fanity lives full-time on the island and wasn’t planning to leave, at least for Marco, but she was anxious about the possible one-two punch of Marco followed quickly by Laura. Her husband works with the town’s fire and police departments, so she said they are always among the last ones to leave.

“My house was built in 1938 so I think we’re good,” she said hopefully.

I have yet to truely express my admiration for pine trees. My love for pines root back to when I was 5, when we moved from N.O. to Abita Springs. I retreated from a house full over girls and city streets to the glistening green and brown needles of the shady creek banks. I was one with nature. Cooking fish over fires, building treehouses, and making wigwams were a regular activity. For 3 years the trees shielded me from the harsh realities of the early 80's. Then we moved to Slidell when I was 8 and I started skateboarding, but I was growing a succulent I had won at the town hall bingo night in Abita. At our new house I found little jade growing out our patio brinks. I instinctually dug it up. About 3 years later and after a couple more moves, I found myself searching cow fields for for fishing holes and bonsai hunting for stunted invasive shrubs... Unfortunately the couple pine seedlings I purchased in 2010 with my redwoods didn't make it through all the moves I've since made. I moved so much in life, I waited for a time of feeling centered to start surrounding myself with pine trees again. This one I've watched grow beside a rock in my sisters yard for a couple years. I finally found myself saying it's time. It'll symbolize a time of personal growth, gratitude and upcoming change. I'll commit to growing it till my days are done.
