For the listener, who listens in the snow

It took a lot to shut them down in Jackson, but getting two feet of snow dumped over the course of a short winter’s night followed by plummeting temperatures effectively did the trick. Between Joel’s constant need to be prepared for another cataclysm and Ellie’s need to burn off energy, they had plenty of wood for the stove and Grace made sure to keep them stocked on staples and those dried juneberries Joel would never admit to loving, though he ate them by the handful when he thought she wasn’t looking. So yeah, it wasn’t the worst.

“It actually reminds me of being stuck on-call at the hospital Before,” she said, wiggling her toes in their striped wool socks in a wordless request for a foot-rub. As her feet were already in Joel’s lap, he was quick to oblige. Ellie was humming under her breath, laying out another hand of solitaire at the kitchen table, within Joel’s eyeline, so he was as relaxed as he got other than when she rode him to climax. He was inclined to indulge her in all ways at this point.

“Yeah?”

“If the weather was bad enough, you just had to suck it up and stay overnight, even if you weren’t officially required to be in-house,” she said. “Too dicey getting back in if there was another call and I swear, all it took was a big storm, preferably ice, to get people choking on steak.”

“Sounds shitty,” he said.

“Well, it wasn’t the best,” Grace said, closing her eyes to remember and to appreciate his big hands working the arch of her soles. He did something with his thumbs that was near-miraculous.

“Did they give you free food? Seems like they’d try to buy you off with cheap pizza instead of overtime,” he said.

“No union,” she said. “And it was a free meal in the caf, which meant you could pick the pizza if you wanted to. I’d load up on the breakfast, they did that better.”

“Hard to screw up bacon, even in a commercial kitchen,” Joel said.

“Yeah. I’d load up my tray and bring it back to the call room and settle in,” Grace said. “It could get slow after a while, no one venturing out without a Jeep or a serious death-wish, and I could read old back copies of People from the waiting room or see if there were any romance novels in the lounge that no one would ever admit to bringing in, but everyone read them.”

“You liked those, huh?”

“If I was in the right mood,” she said. 

“What else you remember, darlin’?” he asked.

“I had a little Hello Kitty toiletry kit I kept my stuff in. If I ever got stuck without it, it was a terrible on-call, black cloud, I wouldn’t get any sleep, ICU transfers, the whole nine,” she said. “It was my good luck charm basically.”

“What happened to it?”

“Didn’t have it with me when I got called in that last time. When it all started to go crazy,” she said. This was as close as she could get to talking about it, this dancing around, facetious nonsense to keep her from falling into the abyss. “So, I guess you can blame everything that happened with the apocalypse on my forgetting my Hello Kitty bag.”

“Seems like a stretch,” Joel said.

“It was a really cool bag,” Grace said. “And you know what they say about the butterfly effect. Just sub in Hello Kitty.”

“Guess I���ll keep my eye out, next time we’re scavenging,” he said. “Think of what could happen if you got another one.”
