Speech Debelle - Wayward (Official Video)

The Mercury Prize-winning British rapper Speech Debelle reveals new single ‘Wayward’, a smooth alternative hip-hop joint, combining her signature blend of soul and Ancestral Rap, released on 11 May.

Speech Debelle’s new album ‘Sunday Dinner on a Monday’ will be released on 9 June 2023.

Of the new single, Speech says: "It has two meanings: the shadow self and the masculine-feminine energy. I wanted to wear a suit to show myself in my masculine energy, learning and leaning into the feminine in me, played by dancer, Rónké Olágúnjú."

Music video director Aiden Harmitt-Williams commented

"Immediately upon having the idea for the song, I wanted us to shoot it in one take-style, having it flow and ebb as the song does."

Are there any female fronted bands on the same level as Florence and the machine right now?

Like I know plenty of female fronted bands, but nowhere would be near festival  headline status.

And the ones that are headlining would be classified as solo acts.

A lot of her British contemporaries ,male and female, have fallen into obscurity at this point it seems.

what band/ artist needs more love?

For the past months I’ve been getting back into metal after a decade of not, and I’m mostly checking out recommendations by the Death // Sentence podcast, Kim Kelly or Toilet ov Hell, so I don’t know the scene at all and everything is roughly equally famous to me! I’m on a big Caïna kick right now

Also, of the OG English punks I think the Adverts aren’t super big now but I love them. The second album too, I Looked at the Sun is amazing

share a little known fact about a band/ artist you love?

I’m not big into celebrities tbh and atrocious at structuring facts by person instead of subject. I’ll listen to the occasional interview and I used to be very into music books fifteen years ago, but I have forgotten Everything

be honest, do you listen to any female artists? if you do do you feel superior to the other pretentious music kids because of it? 

I adore Kirsty McColl, Emmy the Great, Skin & Skunk Anansie, the Selecter Speech Debelle, Marina and the Diamonds, the Indelicates, X-Ray Spex, etc., but looking at my music collection it’s nowhere near gender parity. I do try to check out women artists when I hear about them (I bought Smoulder’s Times of Obscene Evil and Wild Daring on Friday because I as in the mood for fantasy battle metal and it rules) but that only goes so far.

I don’t feel superior to anyone ever. People who say they don’t listen to women musicians are suspicious tbh, but imo a general gender imbalance should usually be chalked up to our unfortunate patriarchal sexist society.

(Also because I’m agender and have a deeply fraught painful relationship with gender and a lot of common assumptions, there are some songs by cis women (&men tbh) that I just can’t listen to. Not in a this shouldn’t exist way but because there is no space for me in particular in those songs.)

Alongside the single, Speech Debelle reveals her new album ‘Sunday Dinner on a Monday’ which will be released on 9 June 2023. 

Of the new single, Speech says: "Come Your Way is about love and forgiveness, which I’m still learning. I’m also trying with myself and believe it can be a revolutionary act."
