I actually learned about The Sleeveens (Nashville, Tennessee) from a Marty Winch/Green Noise Records email. They have a new LP out on Dirtnap Records (original releasers of The Exploding Hearts) but nothing is up for preview. So here is this excellent 7" on Sweet Time Records (Nashville, Tennessee).

Stefan Murphy sounds like he could be in a Dublin pub (RIP Shane McGowan). But the music also sounds like Ramones-era punk. And in some ways this recalls the early punk of Jonathan Richman/The Modern Lovers.

By the way, Sleeveen is an Irish term for trickster.

Petani Singkong Minta Keadilan, Ini Penjelasan Polres Lampung Utara

Terkait video petani singkong bernama Ibrahim, warga Kecamatan Sungkai Barat, Kabupaten Lampung Utara, meminta keadilan kepada Kapolda Lampung hingga Presiden, Polres Lampung Utara angkat bicara. Kasat Reskrim Iptu Stef Boyoh mewakili Kapolres Lampung Utara AKBP Teddy Rachesna, S.H., S.I.K., M.Si. menjelaskan dimana saudara Ibrahim melapor ke Polres Lampung Utara terkain pencurian singkong di kebun miliknya. Setelah menerima laporan dari korban petugas dari Sat Reskrim melakukan penyelidikan. Dari hasil lidik di ketahui bahwa saudara Ibrahim pada tanggal 2 Agustus 2023 sudah melakukan perjanjian jual/bagi haail singkong di lahan seluas kurang lebih 3 hektar miliknya dengan Hasan. "Tanaman singkong milik Ibrahim ternyata sudah dicabut oleh orang suruhan Hasan. Selama dua hari proses pencabutan saudara Ibrahamin ikut mengawasi," kata Kasat, Rabu (21/2/24). Kemudian uang hasil penjualan singkong tersebut ternyata tidak disetor Hasan kepada Ibrahim. "Berdasarkan hasil Gelar Perkara di Polres Lampung Utara, perkara ini tidak bisa dilanjutkan penyidikannya karena tidak memenuhi unsur pencurian, malainkan tindak pidana tipu gelap," ujarnya. Sehingga atas Laporan pencurian ini lanjut Kasat, dilakukan penghentian penyelidikan. Namun, penyidik Polres Lampung Utara sudah memfasilitasi korban untuk membuat Laporan Polisi kasus penipuan atau penggelapan dengan terlapor Saudara Hasan (LP/B/473/XI/2023/SPKT/POLRES LU, tanggal 24 November 2023). Terhadap Laporan Polisi tipu gelap tersebut sudah dalam tahap sidik. "Penyidik Sat Reskrim sudah menetapkan saudara Hasan menjadi tersangka dalam kasus tipu gelap tersebut dan akan segera berupaya mengamankan pelaku yang saat ini masih melarikan diri," tegas Boyoh. Kemudian Kapolres AKBP Teddy menambahkan, dalam proses penanganan perkara ini Polres Lampung Utara sudah melakulan secara Profesional, cepat, transparan dan akuntabel sesuai prosedur perundang-undangan yang ada. Listed: Dean McPhee

Dean McPhee is a British solo electric guitarist, whose latest album, Witches Ladder, was recorded live with no overdubs and inspired by folklore, mysticism and the landscapes of the North of England. Jennifer Kelly reviewed it in the last Dust, noting that “Pensive, jazz-infused runs flower into bright bursts of notes, not quite blues, not quite folk, not quite jazz, not quite anything but gorgeous.” Here he muses on the current crop of U.K. based guitarists.

Here is my list of some of my favourite current UK artists. In terms of genres it covers a range from hauntological solo guitar and experimental electronic music to noise rock and new age weirdness.

David A. Jaycock — “Lark (Electric)”

Lark (Electric) by David A. Jaycock

Released earlier this year on Bandcamp “Lark (Electric)” is “an instrumental reimagining of the folk song “The Lark in the Morning” played on electric guitar with analog synths. This track serves as a ghostly reverb-swathed companion to the closing track from David’s amazing 2020 LP Murder, and The Birds.

Tongues of Light — “The Myth of Separation And Selfhood (Unity)”

This is the first side of an LP by Sam McLoughlin which was released in 2020 on Andy Votel/Demdike Stare’s Pre-Cert Home Entertainment label. It blends together subtly processed recordings of people speaking in tongues (found on YouTube) with a psychedelic backcloth of hypnotic synths, drones and gongs.

Seabuckthorn — “Four O’Clock In The Morning Courage”

Other Other by Seabuckthorn

Andy Cartwright aka Seabuckthorn is an incredibly talented guitarist and ambient solo artist who plays bowed/plucked 6 and 12 string resonator guitars with effects. This track is taken from his 2020 limited edition double mini-CD album, Other Other, which was released on the Fluid Audio label.

Asher Levitas — “Spores”

Beyond The Valley Pt. I - Forest's Gate by Asher Levitas

“Spores” is from Asher Levitas’ 2019 limited edition cassette Beyond The Valley Pt. 1 — Forest’s Gate. On this track a heavy block of filtered sub-bass bludgeons its way through a gaseous cloud of phased hiss and beautiful choirs of fractured and ethereal new age sounds. Incredible stuff.

C Joynes — “Joynes, NC”

Split Electric (2016) by C Joynes / Nick Jonah Davis

From the excellent Split Electric split 12” — with Nick Jonah Davis — released in 2016 on Thread Recordings (with artwork by Richard Dawson) this track is a quirky and beautifully played fingerpicked tune with a little slap-back echo that ambles through a series of interesting and unpredictable turns.

Wolf People — “Night Witch”

Night Witches were an all-female regiment of the Soviet air force in World War II. This track is a massive sounding fuzz/folk rock tune from Wolf People’s last album Ruins. It pays tribute to their silent bombing raids, where they would idle their engines before the target and drop their bombs “as graceful and quiet as snow.”

Various Artists — The Folklore of Plants, Vol. I

31 artists (including myself) contributed to this hugely inventive, strange and eclectic compilation LP, released in 2017 on the Folklore Tapes label, including Magpahi, Hugh Metcalfe, Rob St. John, David Chatton Barker, Stu Bannister, Paper Dollhouse and Bridget Hayden. We all contributed tracks of around 1 min. 30 secs. duration, each based around the folklore of a plant of our choice.

Stef Kett — “Barbed Thaw”

Cry And Sing by Stef Kett

Idiosyncratic, unpredictable and raw avant-garde acoustic guitar with kick drum and vocals. It reminds me a little of Bill Orcutt (one of my favourite current players) but is highly original and definitely stands on its own. “Barbed Thaw” is from Stef’s Cry and Sing album, which was released at the end of last year.

Guttersnipe — Tusk Virtual 2020

Guttersnipe are a Leeds-based duo who are one of the very best live acts around, and regularly leave audiences in a state of amazement. This is a great recording which captures the intense, wildly inventive and seriously out-there guitar/vocals and drums duo in full effect — filmed during lockdown at the online Tusk Festival last year.

Andrew DR Abbott — “Red Sky over Erewyrehve”

From this year’s Erewyrehhve LP, this is an epic guitar piece for solo 8 string baritone guitar which starts with long ringing notes and then moves into a rich and resonant piece of flowing Blackshaw-esque picking which serves as the peak of a great album which beautifully “conveys a dream-journey through a postcapitalist utopia.”

Big Yawn - No! - off-kilter instrumental grooves from Melbourne (so much good music coming from there!) (Research Records)

The various sides of Melbourne quartet Big Yawn fluctuate neatly across their debut full length ‘No!’. Subtle dub techno delays combine with live drums on “Attaboi” to formally introduce their clear affectation for the motorik sounds of 70s Deutschland. Previous single “Skinrat” curiously references off-rhythms and vocal cut ups a la late naughties UK bass music, while abstract jams such as “For Whomst” channel the adventurous live-and-direct sound of Golden Teacher and kindred experimentalist Inga Copeland. Heavy low-end bass frequencies and twitches of dub fx permeate the LP, shades of post-punk and loopy minimal wave (“Doodle Damage”) contrasting with the more jagged dance orientated moments. In opting to close ‘No!’ with their most expansive recording (“Body Double”), Big Yawn delve deeper into the tense and ritualistic atmospheres the prior tracks only hint at. The effect seems akin to a snapshot into their lengthy freestyle practice sessions; a process honed and refined here for the LP format. Until their next outing, the relentless groove of “Anthem X” will keep hips swaying during those sweaty early morning club hours. To render evolving, encompassing drones, and/or high-volume collage or "wall" noise as it's called, is an achievement in and of itself, and we've heard many a great session along those lines on The Castle—hopefully I've presented the "cream" of local and nationwide artists working in that milieu—but to do something like Decimus is another matter entirely, in that it's one individual really sounding like a "band," and as Pat expressed in the post-session interview (and I paraphrase), to change the environment in this way is to change people's minds via suggestion.
