This is your reminder if you plan on going to protests
Tumblr media
No matter your skin tone, you need to wear sunscreen, especially considering doctors are so shit at diagnosing skin cancer in people with darker skin tones.
Reapply every two hours. If you use spray, you should be doing at least two layers on each area and rubbing it in (even if it says no rub).
When it comes to sunscreen, make sure you are using a broad spectrum sunscreen or one rated sp+++ at minimum. Sunscreens not labelled as such will only protect you against UVB rays (the ones which cause burns) not UVA rays (the ones that cause cancer).
If like me you have photosensitivity, apply sunscreen under your UV protectant clothes, stay close to buildings, And consider other ways you can help than protesting if it is severe.
You can order UV protectant sleeves, but if you can't afford those then go through your closet and look for densely woven clothing. You can read specifics about determining the sun protection your clothes provide here.
Wear a hat or bandana over your head to keep your scalp safe. Make sure to put sunscreen on and behind your ears no matter your hair length.
Finally remember: any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen. If you miss a reapply, do it asap. If your sunscreen is only SPF 15 instead of 30, use it or ask to borrow someone else's. If yours isn't tear free, again ask to borrow someone else's for your face.

Reminder: You don't need to burn or even tan to have your risk of developing melanoma greatly increased. Often, you can't actually see sun damage with the naked eye.
Always wear sunscreen.
Wearing clothing and hats that cover your skin from the sun, on top of sunscreen, is ideal!

I think I've developed a fear of being in direct sunlight. Ever since I got that large mole on my back last year, I've gotten scared with every new freckle I've gotten, even on parts of me that haven't been in the sun, or parts that I've worn sunscreen over. I'm just scared I'll get skin cancer and it won't be diagnosed soon enough and then it'll be too late to treat it easily and I'll only have months left to live and I won't get to witness the and of all the unfinished media I'm following, or anything new that comes out. It doesn't help that I still need to get Vitamin D. I just don't know what I should do, I want to be safe but I also still need it.

To clarify a few things re: the suntan post.
"There's no such thing as a healthy tan" is a phrase that you see a lot in public education material about sun safety and skin cancer. I couldn't find exactly where it originated. It's a public health slogan, like "I got mine" for flu shots or "drop it and drive" for not texting and driving.
Here are some sources talking about skin cancer and sun safety that use the slogan.
If anybody has a question or a problem with one of my posts or tag rants, yes, please, feel free to ask about it. You might learn something. I might learn something. Who knows?
Graphic sexual insults will get you blocked.
