Getting tired from cReAtIve folks with 1k+ followers and constant surge of notes nagging on and on about how bad things are with creativity on Tumblr.
Where were you when a couple of years ago I did picspams, screenshot edits and what not and never got any recognition? I'm sure except me there were others doing that. But no, that was too an obscure show or pairing to pay attention to.
Didn't you all collectively decide to do complicated overlay gifs, supercolorful gifs, 4k gifs, heavily covered with text gifs, or hell, even using adobe after effects for gifs?
Now tumblr is drowning in the same redundant cReatIvE edits over and over. They look fancy and nice, but I, for one, gif something to actually see the fucking person. I'm giffing for the features of that person or capture a scene. Or, maybe I add a very small amount of text sometimes, not to distracting because I like the quote or the lyrics. I don't need an overlayed masterpiece, I want to fucking see what's going on.
That said I don't mind creative {gif} edits at all although they're definitely not my cup of tea. I appreciate the skill I don't envy it because I know that if given enough time I'll imitate it. But guys, not everyone wants to be cReaTiVe. We've drained this word from its original inclusive, all-encompassing meaning and for what? To become redundant and cliché?
My first ever set after hiatus got 400 notes, and it's not 'creative'. It took me time but apparently not enough considered to be worthy of tumblr's creative police.
So what, by your logics, we all should stop just giffing our fav characters and sit 10h+ straight to do cReatIvE edits?
Sure, no problem. Buy me a good pc that won't die screencapping 4K or editing in After Effects, and no problem, I'll do it. Buy me a VPN or a bluray remux set I can rip and gif. Go to work for me while I'm being 'creative'.
Back in the day, you collected 'clean' gifs of your characters where you could see their faces. Edited and lightning fixed, but the main point was a clear gif.
Stop with the attitude like we all need to be content creators. We are not and we don't need to.
Just let people do what they fucking want and how they want it.

July 29 2023*
*posted August 8 2023 because I put this in my drafts and forgot about it lol
OK - this is going to mark the occasion of my First Realistic Devlog. That being - one where I actually record some of the more tedious aspects of my job (graphic design) + deeper thoughts about it. (It's not ACTUALLY all playing with holograms!)
Luckily, I have a secret passion in that I really, really love graphic design. It's one of the most powerful forms of art, which is why so many billions are spent on advertisement each year. It's scary powerful, is proven to influence the way we THINK (propaganda is graphic design), and reminds me why it's so important to Touch Grass every once and awhile.
ANYWAYS. My task right now is to 1) Make new brush icons, 2) Make new brush names, and 3) To write actual, helpful descriptions of what each brush does.
This is to make the app more accessible for non-artists! I want the "art" section of Figmin to be as fun-to-use and nonthreatening as Kid Pix. Figmin already does wonders for bringing out people's inner, creative child, (it's REAL HOLOGRAMS YOU CAN TOUCH. LIKE?!?) -- there are still some genuinely confusing bits of the Tilt Brush section that daunt the average, less art-program savvy person. For example, take this brush called Lofted:
Tumblr media
What does this image, combined with the name "Lofted" even MEAN?!? What is a "Toon Tube"?! What is SUPERCOLOR???
Lots of icons are good and actually intuitive (Image from this article):
Tumblr media
Others are a little.... less so. (Why are "Wire" and "Light Wire" VASTLY different brushes?! What is "Toon" supposed to be??? It makes 3D tubes with black outlines and is UGLY. I literally never use it. There is "Toon" discourse among Tilt Brush artists.)
Doing hundreds of public demos really taught me about what people liked... and what they struggled with - so I'm working very hard to make it as amazing as I can! It's honestly an honor to work on a program that has as much reach as Figmin XR does - to be recognized and approached by strangers because of it!!!! - and I wanna say we're trying to set the best example we can of what this new technology could REALLY be used for.
... Because it's gonna be used for a lot - and not all of it is gonna be good. I'm constantly thinking about Keiichi Matsuda's film "Hyper-Reality", which is a "bad end" vision of what AR glasses will be like, and I think it should be more widely known among developers. And just like... people in general. Think about what tech you consume, kids! 🫡
BUT YES. Brush icons. Tooltip names. Making new ones is hard!! I'm trying to exactly match the existing Tilt Brush style, while also attempting to include visual & naming information that makes every single brush as organized and easy-to-understand as humanly possible.
It's fun! But agonizing. 🫠

i should make another zine. like maybe a photo zine. i have 2 photo albums of film i haven’t done much with besides post on instagram. oh i need to get film developed i have 1 roll done and 2 almost done. too many cameras = too many rolls being shot at once. i need to fix my photo teacher’s polaroid supercolor but polaroid 600 film is stupid expensive. $20 for 8 photos? absolutely not. i should shoot more on my instax mini and include that in the zine. maybe i could write some poetry or little stories and do some cool typography. in my art tag if you scroll back enough i posted a bunch of zine pages from “dinner after 9” which wasnt meant to be a series but if i made a photo zine the project would probably be adjacent to that. i’m trying to get my main music zines 5th issue printed right now and then i’ll have to make a bunch of mail order cds. where do i even print those?!!! maybe the public library. i also have like 5 unfinished and unrecorded songs im working on. i watched twin peaks fire walk with me and now i want to draw stills from the film. i should use my medium format camera again. maybe forrest has fixed my ae-1? i could use that but ill have to buy more color film. i want portra 400 again but its so expensive. i also want to try those lomochrome films. maybe i should start developing film in my bathroom and get a film scanner. maybe i should get an audio interface and finish my songs. maybe i should make more screen prints and start an etsy shop or something. maybe i should quit my job. the mind of a creative is exhausting.
