Alanis Morissette - I Was Hoping 1998

Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is the fourth studio album and second internationally released album by Canadian singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette, most famous for her hit "Ironic". The album was positively received by critics and performed well commercially, reaching number one on the US Billboard 200 and breaking the record for album sales in its first week by a female artist. She held the record for two years until the release of Britney Spears' second album in 2000.

In the New Zealand Albums Chart, it was Morissette's second consecutive number one album, and was certificated 2× Platinum. It also debuted at number one in Switzerland, and stayed in the charts for thirty-one weeks, as well as number one in Norway, staying there for three weeks. It also peaked in the top ten in many countries.

"I Was Hoping" recieved 39,8% total yes votes.

You oughta know today is Alanis Morissette’s birthday.

And here’s a jagged little pill for those feeling their age: Morissette is 50.

Born June 1, 1974, the Canadian singer reached the nifty milestone at midnight local time. And though she released two pop albums prior and seven more with such titles as Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie and the Storm before the Calm, subsequent to it, Morissette is, and will likely always be, best known for 1995’s Jagged Little Pill.

The album arrived at the right time and hit all the right emotional places for young people of the era.

And the music and performances hold up even if the subject matter - and the emotions it evokes - become less relational as the years fall away. ’Cause let’s face it, with the exception of Lauren Boebert, no one on the other side of 35 is going down on you in a theater.

Isn’t that ironic?

Given Morissette’s relationship with the word ironic, Sound Bites supposes it is.

I was listening to the 25th anniversary of the Living In Clip live album and man… I cried in I’m No Heroine when she said ‘I’m no heroine, at least not last time I checked. I’m too easy to roll over, I’m too easy to wreck. I just write about what I should have done, I just sing what I wish I could say, and hope that somewhere some woman hears my music and it helps her through her day.’ Ani, this woman was helped.
