Hi there. Idk if this question has been asked before, but where do they find the fabric for the mandarin coat?
I'd say there are as many answers as there are versions of the costume. But some pointers:
Many of the early versions were made with partly antique embroidered textiles from the Qing dynasty. These were a popular collector's item in the 19th and 20th century, to the point where some of them were never intended for use in China, they were made as souvenirs. The original design by Maria Bjørnson suggests antique Chinese fabrics, with a hem showing the classic water-and-mountain motif, the collar being a cloud collar usually seen in women's attires, and the hat a decorated winter hat.
Tumblr media
Even if all these costumes are made from scratch rather than bought, I thought it could be interesting to compare it to a similar authentic Chinese robe - without the collar - dated to the 1890s and sold by Augusta Auctions some years ago:
Tumblr media
This robe has a badge - an insignia of rank and position of a Mandarin official in the Qing dynasty. These were used both on the chest and back, and the bird or otherwise animal told onlookers all they needed to know, if the person was a civil or military employee, and how high up in the system they were. The badge is not featured in Bjørnson's design, but it has showed up in a few costumes. Maybe most proninently in Michael Crawford's original West End costume, which Bjørnson would have supervised:
Tumblr media
To my eye it looks like many of the elder costumes (up until c. 2005) used a lot of antique or vintage fabrics, but used on a new base. Details to look for is distinct gold couching, re-used badges, special dragon embroideres, antique collars and tabards, fringework etc. I am quite convinced some of these are antique or vintage details, like the China blue tabard with water and mountain motif used by John Owen-Jones in West End c. 2002:
Tumblr media
The cuff and details on one of the original Australian robes, and continued to shine in the World Tour up until 2015 or so:
Tumblr media
The tabard of the Swedish/Danish version, first made in 1989 and still in use in 2019 (maybe not too visible in the stage photo, but definitely when seen up close backstage!):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a contrast, newer costumes tends to be brassier and bigger, with less embroidery and more appliquées and trims. It looks to me like they mostly rely on new fabrics and materials, maybe with some elements of elder embroidery. This collar made for Ben Lewis in West End is a good example:
Tumblr media
And the recent German version, here seen on Mathias Edenborn in Hamburg. It's a costume I got to study up close and I couldn't spot any particular details that looked old:
Tumblr media
And this Broadway robe with what looks like a very new firefly pattern brocade and embroidered gold trims appliquéed on:
Tumblr media
So why this change? I guess it depends on what is available. Qing textiles has become more rare on the open market, and more expensive. Elder textiles are also more fragile, while new textiles will handle wear and tear, dry cleaning etc. better. Some of these costumes are used on stage up to eight times a week, after all.
Due to the fragility of elder textiles, they may have to cover the embroidery with fine mesh. This dulls down the effect and makes the costume heavier, so it's not always ideal. Better then to use new stuff. Here's an early 1990 West End one covered with mesh, to protect the embroidery:
Tumblr media
A last aspect is of course that by using elder textiles you may put specific meaning-bearing motifs on which ideally shouldn't be there. The beautiful embroidered Indian fabric with elephants and swastikas - in India a symbol of the sun and good luck - which appeared in an unfortunate Danish Elissa skirt is a good example. Luckilly the costume crew knew what they were doing by including the five bats - for good luck - on this Broadway Mandarin robe:
Tumblr media
If you plan on making your own costume, I would say: Create the base of a Chinese brocade (silk or synthetic) with predominantely black or dark blue base and polychrome pattern. As an inspiration, here's the robe, collar and tabard - fairly undecorated - in making for Scott Davies (top) and Ben Lewis (bottom) in West End, with photos generously shared by head-of-costume Ceris Donovan:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the back: Go for a main motif, and build everything around that. And layer! Gems upon trims upon embroideries upon fabrics. The more structure, embroidery, couching and details the various materials has, the better. And then add some on top of that.
Note that it varies if a production do both the robe, cloud collar and tabard. Some production only do two of these, some do all three. But whatever the case, the costume with hat should create angles, texture and lines that makes him stand out from the previous scene, where he wore black and white and tight-fitting clothes.
Tumblr media
In West End I think they source it in the many amazing fabric shops in Brixton and Soho, including Borovicks, as well as antique dealers. For Broadway I know a lot was bought in the fabric district in NYC. Other productions may be equipped with fabrics and trims from these, or they may source their own materials locally. I also noticed that the Chinese (left) and Japanese (right) productions tend to use more red and purple fabrics for their versions, which I would think was also locally sourced:
Tumblr media
So yeah. As many answers as there are versions out there...

I’ve been wracking my brain for a while to try and make a Melee and/or Grapple Manticore build. Just standing directly next to things and being a menace. I was wondering if I could get your thoughts on something like this. Thanks for reading regardless if you respond to this one. Love reading your stuff.
Luckily for you, this concept did spark joy.
-- HORUS Manticore @ LL6 -- [ LICENSES ] IPS-N Blackbeard 2, HORUS Manticore 3, IPS-N Tortuga 1 [ CORE BONUSES ] Improved Armament, Titanomachy Mesh [ TALENTS ] Duelist 3, PANKRATI 2, Skirmisher 2, Brawler 1, Combined Arms 1 [ STATS ] HULL:4 AGI:2 SYS:0 ENGI:2 STRUCTURE:4 HP:19 ARMOR:2 STRESS:4 HEATCAP:9 REPAIR:5 TECH ATK:+1 LIMITED:+1 SPD:4 EVA:8 EDEF:10 SENSE:10 SAVE:13 [ WEAPONS ] FLEX MOUNT: Chain Axe FLEX MOUNT: Chain Axe HEAVY MOUNT: Nanocarbon Sword [ SYSTEMS ] Synthetic Muscle Netting, Lightning Generator, Beckoner, Siege Ram
I call this one YOUR PUTRID FLESH WITHERS UNDER THE UNBLINKING GAZE OF MY DIVINE CONTEMPT. We're making a Manticore build; this is not the place for subtle or pithy names.
This is a melee-only build, which I normally recommend against. I think it's good for a build to have at least some sort of ranged attack capability, but in this case, there's just no room for it. We're ride or die here, and diluting the build by hedging our bets is just going to tip the scales towards "die."
You are not particularly fast, so we've got the Pankrati valiant charge and Beckoner to help you close gaps. What you want to do at that point is slam in as fast as you can and try to connect with a Main melee attack (Duelist gives you an accuracy to help with that) - not your Heavy, one of your Mains. You then immediately use Duelist 3 to spend the Blademaster die you just earned to free-Grapple the target, and then you use Titanomachy Mesh to follow up the free-Grapple with a free-Ram (and because they're Grappled, Brawler 1 turns on, making your Ram more accurate, and because being Grappled causes them to become Immobilized, Pankrati 1 also turns on, making your Ram EVEN MORE ACCURATE). Knock your enemy Prone but do not knock them away.
To summarize: your target has taken Main Melee damage from you, become Grappled, then been rammed Prone. Because Grappled causes Immobilization, they cannot use their regular movement to stand up from Prone, and because of Synthetic Muscle Netting, unless they're larger than you, they cannot ever gain control of the grapple.
If they don't have weapons or abilities that knock you away, they have two real options to get away from you. The first is to spend a quick action trying to escape the grapple, which they can fail, wasting the action entirely. Even if they succeed, they still either need to crawl away provoking your Overwatch (use your Heavy for this) or use their entire regular movement to stand back up, then their other quick action to Boost away, again provoking your Overwatch.
The second, if they're the same size as you or larger, is to Ram you back. This is more effective, since your Evasion is low, and knocking you away will break the grapple. This still only leaves you one space away from them, which is still within Threat of your Nanocarbon Sword, and unless they have a modifier that deals damage on Ram (which, to my knowledge, no vanilla NPC does), they've spent 2/3rds of their turn just getting 1 space away from you and standing upright. If they decline to move away from you, you can just stand up on your turn and Skirmish 2 spaces towards them to do the whole thing all over again.
If they are a melee class, their best bet is to focus you down, but with 2 Armor and resistance to two types of damage, that's harder than it looks - and if they're focusing on you, they're not attacking your team's squishies, which is the whole point of the Defender class.
If they're a ranged class, they're fucked. With you up in their grill, their attacks against everyone including you become inaccurate. Artillery NPC classes don't tend to have much HP, and rely on staying far away from players. If a weapon has Ordnance, they can't even fire it at you at all if they're in engagement.
On your next turn, if your target is still grappled, activate your Lightning Generator, and then Barrage. Your attack sequence looks like this:
Chain Axe -> free Ram (Duelist 3), no knockback -> free Ram (Titanomachy Mesh), no knockback -> Nanocarbon Sword
Against unarmored targets, this has a damage floor of 9 assuming all attacks hit, and will slam for 5 even if all your attacks miss. Lightning Generator will do different amounts of damage depending on whether you're in the Danger Zone, but Charged Exoskeleton will always trigger off of Lightning Generator (if you choose) and will always deal 2 AP.
Note that if you're in control of the grapple (which, thanks to SMN, you usually are), you can still make your standard move. This means you can drag your victim 4 spaces towards or away from your friends.
When you turn on your ult, enemies have an even more miserable time, because now not only are there two forms of damage you're resistant to, you're also resistant to Heat (which means you can Overcharge for half price). Worse, any Heat or Energy damage you take now increases a doomsday clock.
Be warned that this build only has 19 HP, and even with 2 Armor you're not going to last forever, but on the other hand, enemies must focus on you or you'll just be able to tear them apart one by one.

The greatest human invention.
Humans have been weaving for thousands of years, since the Neolithic, so about 12,000 years.
Weaving heavily relies on human anatomy, especially knitted and crocheted textiles. Humans have gotten so good at creating textiles we use it to make armor strong enough to stop bullets. We’ve created synthetic fibers that allow us to make incredibly cheap mass produced clothes. We also make antimicrobial clothe by depositing metal nano particles into the cloth. We even weave collagen to make surgical mesh to implant into people. We weave anything we can find from fibers to metals.
Creating cloth is what allowed us to take on any environment we came across. Cold weather; use super thick insulated clothes. Hot weather; airy fabrics that wick away moisture and protect you from the sun. We even created fabrics specifically to handle the vacuum of space and it’s intense solar radiation.
If aliens make contact with humans they’ll probably be surprised by everything we’ve accomplished with textiles.

JEWELRY SHOP REMIX
Tumblr media
Published: 9-23-2023 | Updated: 9-28-2023 SUMMARY "Master jewelers and dealers of finery. And stuff. And thangs. And stuff! We carry SimCity’s finest jewels, atomized gems, and precious, semi-synthetic metals." This set is a retro-futurist, steam-funkish remix of an older Jewelry Shop (WR/HChangeri/RetailSims, 2007 via the LiquidSims Archive) with several new add-ons. The design is inspired by The Fjord “Chiclettina” counters and ‘marvelous marbles’ walls/floors from Sims 2. All 40+ items range from §50-750 and some assembly is required. Scroll down for more details and download links.
Tumblr media
DETAILS Requires all EPs/SPs §50-750 | Buy Mode To streamline files and potential recoloring, everything is repo’d to one of the following objects: Fjord Allshelf 001 (shelving/accents), Fjord Boxed Jewelry Display (boxes), Fjord Necklaces Display (displays/jewelry bands), Fjord Earrings Display (gems), Jewel Case (jewelry cases), Fjord Jewelry Table Glass Display (all glass), Plain Old Fjord Counter (marble surfaces), Fjord Hanging Sign (vertical images; 256x512), Fjord Store Sign (horizontal images; 1024x512) – these items are REQUIRED for textures, etc. to display correctly in-game. *RPC Launcher doesn’t always delete the “Accessories.cache” file, so you may want to MANUALLY delete the file and let the game generate a new one if you remove this set from your game.

ITEMS Modular Shop Furniture The plain counter has been retextured and has 3 slots (only small deco items can occupy the last 2 slots) while the jewelry table has 1 slot. All other furniture is deco - assemble unique display areas by pairing these and other items with one of three shelving units.

The Fjord Single Item Displays 001-003 (pictured above) get their recolors from the EverGlow Plutonium Rod that came with the Nightlife EP. Find them under Lighting > Standing/Floor Lamps – but they can also be used to gussy up displays (see below). You can get recolors for these lights HERE.

*A known game bug may disable some OFB shelf slots. Not all players experience this bug in the same way, but if you do – there is a long-standing fix for it. If you cannot access more than 2 slots on shelves, download ONE of these fixes: MORE_Custom-objects-placeable-on-shelves (Numenor, 2006) MORE_Custom-objects-placeable-on-shelves+LOCKEDTILES (Numenor, 2006) Object Freedom 1.02 (Fway, 2023)) 15 Functional Jewelry Displays §250 each | Buy > Misc > Misc

This set includes 6 traditional counter-top displays with empty states.
Fjord Boxed Jewelry Display (1116 poly), Fjord Earrings Display (784 poly), Fjord Jewelry Stand (1212 poly), Fjord Necklace & Rings Display (748 poly), Fjord Necklaces Display (816 poly), Fjord Rings Display (1072 poly). You can’t really place more than 1 or 2 large displays on the shelving, so there are 8 smaller, complementary displays included as well.
Tumblr media
Fjord Boxed Jewelry Display Two (604 poly), Fjord Bracelets Display (392 poly), Fjord Earrings Display Two (276 poly), Fjord Earrings Display Three (356 poly), Fjord Rings Display Two (472 poly), Fjord Rings Display Three (632 poly), Fjord Single Necklace Display (556 poly), Fjord Single Necklace Display Two (258 poly).

Fjord Smart Jewelry Kiosk (2220 poly); Fjord Boxed Jewelry Display Two pictured again above as well. The kiosk functions as a normal jewelry rack with a unique empty state (the glow disappears, and the screens turn all angry and red!). The label at the base of the machine uses textures from the Fjord Hanging Sign. You’ll see two torn pieces of packaging when the Fjord Boxed Jewelry Display Two needs restocking – other items have noticeably empty states as well (i.e. there will be no jewelry on the display). Show off your merchandise with updated advertisements (originals pictured on top row, remixes pictured on bottom row), as well as several new promotional designs: Fjord Hanging/Standing/Mini Signs (56 poly), Fjord Store Sign (892 poly).

For each display, the base and either the gemstones or metal bands/chains are recolorable. Find recolors for this set under the #ts2recolors tag.

SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED 1) Place a counter (or table, display cabinet, large jewel case, etc.): Fjord Accessory Table (156 poly), Fjord Cabinet Metal (88 poly), Fjord Display Cabinets 001-002 (212-250 poly), Fjord Display Pedestal (12 poly), Fjord Glassbox Displays 001-002 (126 poly), Fjord Jewelry Table (22 poly), Fjord Showcase Counter (533 poly), Plain Old Fjord Counter (113 poly).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) With “snap objects to grid” set to TRUE, assemble items on one of the shelves (3-6 slots each): Fjord Allshelving 001- 002 (12 poly), Fjord Cabinet Glass (Shelf) (28 poly), Fjord Counter Display Cabinet (~400 poly), Fjord Jewel Case Displays Reg/Small (744 poly), Fjord Jewelry Table Glass Display (116 poly), Fjord Jewelry Table Shelf (12 poly).
*For owned businesses, this is a good time to set items for sell. The short display cabinets pictured above are shiftable in case you need to move them and rearrange items on the shelf. You can click through the glass as well.
**Some debug-related items float slightly when placed on Allshelf 001 or 002 – this is something I’ve experienced when cloning BuggyBooz shelves - it’s not terribly noticeable from most angles. If it bothers you, close the gap by shifting another object underneath.
***The jewel cases have 6 slots. This may be awkward for the smaller case but that’s on purpose - to make moving several clutter items at once easier. In my opinion, the larger one looks better when paired with a shelf.
3) With “move objects” ON and “snap objects to grid” set to FALSE, shift/rotate the shelf into place as needed. As you combine different objects, some will look best when they’re all facing the same direction (i.e., the green arrows are pointing in the same direction) and others might not – this depends on what items you’re using. You can shift/combine the Fjord Single Item Displays with select objects to add neon light accents to your displays.
Tumblr media
You’ll need “move objects on/off” and “snap objects to grid true/false” cheats to make some combinations work. You may also need fences, OMSPs, or other objects to keep sims from walking through parts of the display.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4) Use the Tile Blocker as needed (especially if you play with Object Freedom by Fway, 2023). All objects have 1-tile footprints – but some cover more space than a single tile. The Tile Blocker is included in this set to help you cover those unused tiles and keep sims from walkin’ where they shouldn’t be walkin (learned this the hard way!). If needed, you can read more about the Tile Blocker using the download link below.
