THE GIFTENING 2019: Jetty Day!

I nearly forgot, today’s the day I’m announcing what I’ve chosen to do for the creatively named “Jetty Day”.

Sometimes, going through all the heats and votes, you come to realize there are things you personally root for, stuff you WANT to do, but it just doesn’t make it. So I’ve pulled a couple of those things that I was hoping to get to do for you, AND DOING THEM ANYWAY BECAUSE I’M RUNNING THIS SHOW.

For this GIFTENING’s inaugural Jetty Day then, I have decided to force upon you all:

A Place Further Than The Universe (liveblog). This is the first anime I’ve seen cross my dash in pretty much EVER to catch my attention to this degree. It sounds like everything I would want to see, AND NOW I WILL AND YOU’RE COMING WITH ME. (Note that as I was following along with @docholligay​‘s recent liveblog of the first episode, I’ll watch the first ep myself, but my liveblog will begin with episode 2.) 

Firewatch (livestream). And that evening, we’ll play Firewatch, WHICH I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO PLAY FOR YOU ASSHOLES FOR LIKE THREE YEARS. It’s hilarious how it never quite gets far enough, but is equally hilarious how much I DON’T CARE. I want to play it, and now, I’M GONNA.

The liveblog will run from about 10/10:30 to 4pm MT, and the livestream from 6p to 9p MT.

I hope you’re looking forward to Jetty Day, but the best thing is, I DON’T HAVE TO ACTUALLY CARE HAHAHAHAH THE POWER FLOWS THROUGH ME

FUCK ME THIS SHOW IS KILLING ME IN THE LITTLE THINGS

They’ve known ... Octopus Shirt (Hinata? Something like that I think?) for like three days, and she’s already connected SO WELL with them both. Obviously she and MC (Miki? Mikasa? I’LL GET THERE) share part of a brain, but she SEES shit, and can figure out people -- or at least these two, but probably people in general. Shirase (the name’s in the caps!) is one tiny push from cracking. And while the trip means something to all of them for an assortment of reasons, hers is probably the most personal and intense.

So without discussing it, without allowing her the opportunity to object (because she would) or make it a debate (which she would),Octopus simply -- if lightheartedly and beautifully dramatically -- usurps command, Responsibility. Shirase can take a minute to catch her breath while the other two brainstorm what to try next.

Which is all the difference, this time. Shirase isn’t in this alone anymore, and it makes me happy in my Senshi heart to see the others so ready and willing to take some of this off her shoulders.

UGH I ALREADY CHERISH THEM AND THEIR FRIENDSHIPS SO MUCH AND IT’S BEEN TWO EPISODES

MMMMMM YESSSSS

They haven’t even fucking LEFT yet and already we’re ......

WAIT WAIT HOLD THE FUCK UP DO THEY NEVER ACTUALLY LEAVE?? Will the whole story not at all be about them in Antarctica? Because that very much doesn’t seem to be the emotional thrust of it at all. It’s about MC and her fear of failure holding her back from ever trying. It’s about Antarctica having set her mind so solidly on THIS THING that her determination has turned to obsession and she’s not had to deal with what any of this is is actually about. For both of them -- and I assume for the other two when we get there -- nothing that’s happening is about the trip specifically, it’s what the trip means beyond that. It’s Antarctica, but it could literally be anywhere, and they’d be going through the same struggles.

HMMMMM

But okay, yes, my original thought: the way these two are butting up against each other, in the sense that their “things” are so inherently incompatible. MC wants assurances that living will never come with regret and disappointment. Antarctica wants to do the impossible without even entertaining the possibility that it really will be. One is afraid to fail, the other is too myopic to see that she might. AND I AM FUCKING HERE FOR IT

So that was amazing and I’m legit sad I’m out of time. I had hoped I’d love it, and then liked it even more than I thought I would.

I absolutely, unquestioningly support you girls (and I guess two more from the credits) (thinking the freshman-sniffing friend and the gal at the convenience store at the moment) taking this adventure. I think it’s so over the top and destined for some degree of heartbreak for Antarctica here, and I need you to know how enthusiastically I am here for every bit of it.
