JACOBIN FICTION CONVENTION MEETING 36: THE GAME OF HOPE (2018)
Tumblr media
1. The Introduction
Well, hello there, Citizens and Neighbors! I’m alive and back with a review, as promised. (Very happy about it too because I missed you!)
Now, to cut to the chase, @josefavomjaaga was the first person who told me about the novel’s existence, which had me a bit intrigued already due to my constant search for new media to consume and review.
However, my dear friend @tairin helped seal the deal and officially put this particular piece onto my review bucket list, as a physical copy of the book (in Russian) was her present for my birthday last year. I read the book back then but, due to all the other reviews and personal life stuff, kept putting away this particular review.
Fortunately, I finally found free time to catch up on the piece and post it, so here we go.
Before we proceed, here’s a link for anyone who wants to download the book in English. As mentioned, it’s available in Russian too, but Russian-speaking members of my audience will need to purchase the epub or a physical copy to be able to read it. I’m not sure if it’s available in any other languages.
Also, this review is dedicated to @josefavomjaaga , @tairin and @frevandrest ! Okay, let’s. Fucking. Begin.
2. The Summary
“The Game of Hope” tells the story of Hortense de Beauharnais, Napoleon’s stepdaughter, and her coming of age journey, including crushes, rivalries, and her life at Madame Campan’s boarding school for girls.
Although I loathe Hortense with a passion, review material is review material and I was still intrigued by the premise, so let’s see how this premise plays out in the book!
3. The Story
Generally, I enjoy coming of age stories and YA novels and, luckily, this one is no exception. It is melodramatic, but it’s justified because Hortense is a teenager and a dramatic person, so her POV having melodrama is expected.
It’s a slice of life kind of story and most political events happen in the background but still realistically affect the characters, which is realistic and very neat!
Also, this is by far the only book where anti-Frev sentiments don’t give me an urge to flip the fuck out, since Hortense lost her father and almost lost her mother during Frev and is far too naive and young to understand politics! Of course she will think Frev is evil and of course she will believe that being noble would be enough to have her executed!
The pacing is great too. There are some time skips but the author clearly knew when to do them and when to slow down. Now complaints here.
If you are craving a story with typical teenage melodrama involving historical figures, then I guess it’s a book for you.
4. The Characters
I don’t like Hortense as a person here, but as a character she’s realistic and nuanced. She has the selfish and bratty nature that would stick way into adulthood, but she genuinely loves Eugene and her friends at the boarding school. Also her resentment towards her stepfather and the Bonaparte siblings is quite realistic, as from her point of view they’re just asses towards her mother for no reason.
Caroline Bonaparte starts off as a rude bitch (also thanks to Hortense incorporating her own bias), but luckily she becomes more and more nuanced along the way and becomes sort of a frenemy to Hortense. Caroline clearly doesn’t enjoy studying under Madame Campan and wants out of there. Perhaps due to my bias, or because we don’t see her POV, Caroline grew on me more than Hortense.
Eugene (I HAVE to mention him) appears later on in the story and, as expected, is an absolute cinnamon roll.
Josephine is idealized in the story by Hortense, but she isn’t flawless and keeps trying to find Hortense a husband in the beginning. However, she also helps Caroline and Joachim marry, which makes their treatment of her later on a fucking dick move.
Émilie, Hortense’s cousin and close friend, is slightly older and already married (not that unheard of back then), but is still a teenager going through the typical motions common for that age. She is more mature than Hortense and feels trapped in a loveless marriage with Captain Lavalette (no idea who that is).
Campan is very strict but genuinely cares about her students. I liked the part where she has The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen attached to the back of a portrait of Marie-Antoinette and flips the portrait when inspection arrives. Simple, but quite clever!
5. The Setting
No complaints here! Gorgeous descriptions that are very much historically accurate, and Hortense’s POV is conveyed masterfully, which aids the story greatly.
6. The Writing
Simple yet beautiful, without diving too much into purple prose territory and doesn’t shy away from mentioning or implying normal things like periods or sex. I can sense some pearl clutching might happen, but personally I think these topics should be normalized so I don’t complain. Also, my copy graciously included translations of Italian phrases, which is doubly awesome!
7. The Conclusion
Overall, an excellent, overall accurate and believable story! I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about Hortense or just looking for a Frev/Napoleonic coming of age story without too much action.
Alright, on this note, I’m concluding today’s meeting of Jacobin Fiction Convention. Stay tuned for updates, guys!
Love,
Citizen Green Pixel

Hello, love your art. It's very cute)))) You have a new russian fan. Can you tell me what rulers do Hungarians consider to be the best? I have to admit I know very little of Hungarian history...
Hi tairin! I’ve seen your other message too and I’m thankful for the kind words! Sorry for the delayed reply! I wanted to make a painting-like drawing for you but I suck at digital painting so here I made a list of Hungary’s Top 5 (+1) rulers in my usual style instead.
Tumblr media
I’m afraid only Hungarians will get these jokes. /sigh/ Here are some info about these kings and queens:
-Szent István/Saint Stephen: he was our first king, he brought christianity to Hungary and founded the state. He wrote our first laws and a guide for his son on how to govern the kingdom rightfully - his son was sadly killed during hunting and so ‘game of thrones’ started after his death.
-Hunyadi Mátyás/Matthias: the renaissance king, son of the turk-beater Hunyadi János/John, his family’s symbol is a raven with a ring in its mouth and he founded an elite mercenary army called the “Black Army”. He also conquered Vienna and South-Austria by the way. Legend says he also travelled the country in different disguises and served justice among people.
-Károly Róbert/Caroberto: arrived from Italy from the Anjou-dynasty to take the throne but due to not fulfilling the 3 requirement of Hungarian coronation (must be Holy Crown, in Székesfehérvár, by the Archbishop of Esztergom) he made detours and fought wealthy powerful nobles until he was coronated for the 3rd time for real. Phew. The Hungarian throne is demanding.
-IV.Béla: his father was a money-waster so he decided to be the opposite. Nobles didn’t like him that much though so they didn’t come to protect the country when tatars invaded. Béla fled to Croatia and after tatars left, he returned to refound the state. Hungary became a multi-ethnic country under his rule. (That’s why she refers to the ‘kuns’.)
-Szent László/Saint Lawrence: he was called the knight king because he waged wars all his life. He also carried an axe around for some reason. He was raised in Poland by the way. Many legends are centered around his figure. He rescued damsels in distress and fooled enemy with throwing small stones at them, while the enemy believed it was money.
-Mária Terézia/Maria Theresa: the queen Austrian men didn’t want and Hungarians did because she pleaded with her child on her arm so the Hungarian nobles were touched and exclaimed: Our lives and blood for the queen! (Vitam et sanguinem pro rege nostro!) She also enforced compulsory education for kids so young schoolers of today always blame her for hard education, haha.
Aaand that’s all for this history lesson. Hope it wasn’t too much. ^-^’

I was tagged by @clove-pinks to share three albums I’ve been listening to lately. Thanks for tagging me!
... We’ll just exclude all the Christmas music I was listening to last month, because I am absolutely one of those people. Anyway...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1) Final Fantasy IX: Piano Collection (fan arrangement). The arrangement of “Melodies of Life,” one of my all-time favorite FF songs, is outstanding.
2) Disturbed: Immortalized. I listen to a lot of rock/metal when I drive, and this album is a recent favorite. And I’m a little obsessed with their cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.”
3) Highlights from Riverdance & Lord of the Dance. I haven’t actually watched Riverdance yet, but I listened to the music for the first time last year and fell in love with it.
Tagging @almhw85, @tairin, @josefavomjaaga, and anyone else who wants to do it (no worries if you don’t want to ;).

MALMAISON MEDIA SALON SOIRÉE 16: LE CHIRURGIEN DE L’EMPIRE (2020)
Tumblr media
1. The Introduction
SURPRISE!!! Hello, Neighbors, and welcome to Malmaison Media Salon! I did promise you to make a surprise review and here it is!!!
Time for obscure shorts to get the spotlight!
Okay, story time. Most people in Napoleonic community like Larrey. A lot. I’m one of them for a lot of reasons (my interest in anatomy and medicine included), but he and many other surgeons remain on the obscure side of the spectrum when it comes to media, which I find to be unfair.
So, convinced that there must be something out there at least about Larrey, I decided to do some digging and, lo and behold, found this movie on YouTube (in French with English subtitles). That really was like opening a treasure chest that might be containing a trap or two.
I felt excited about the fact that Larrey has something about him, but also a bit cautious about the quality of the movie. Luckily, I enjoyed it, but more on that later.
As promised, this review is dedicated to @amypihcs and @kaxen , but I’d like to include a dedication to the equally wonderful @tairin , my first friend in the Napoleonic community (all of the community is amazing btw).
Okay, this review is going to be relatively short, so let’s begin, shall we?
2. The Summary
The short in question only tells a snippet of Larrey’s story and shows him during the Battle of Waterloo.
Here’s the official IMDb summary:
“1815 Waterloo, whilst the soldiers of the Emperor Napoleon fight with desperation, a man braves all danger to come to their aid with an ambulance. On this very day, too close to the enemy lines, Dominique Larrey rides towards his destiny and posterity.”
It might sound glorifying to some people, but not to me. Medical staff doesn’t get acknowledged nearly as often as they should, but let’s see how well was this homage done.
3. The Story
Despite only being 10 minutes long, the movie does a pretty good job of showcasing Larrey as a character and tells a snippet story that is, well, an actual short story in this context.
(Spoiler alert)
We see Larrey in action from the get go (obviously, because it’s a damn battle), but then he’s informed that more patients need help, rides to save them, is wounded, captured, almost executed and saved by Blucher at the last moment.
So there is a story structure with a beginning and an end, which is very hard to do with only 10 minutes of screen time available, so I do have a lot of respect for those who can tell short stories well.
Even the filler scenes with Larrey’s family aren’t an issue because they do showcase what people think of him and how his job has downsides like missing out on a lot of family time.
My only issue is that the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, but then there’s text on screen neatly wrapping things up.
4. The Characters
Larrey is an actually flawed character! Yay! Here he’s brave and altruistic but also extremely reckless and stubborn. I liked his quip to an officer demanding to be treated first that he doesn’t care about rank (because triage doesn’t work this way). Also he isn’t a stereotypical today’s manly man and cries when he believes he’s about to be executed, so he does have moments of vulnerability and emotions.
Isaure Larrey has one scene where she’s being a bit of a bratty teenager, but I can understand that she misses her father and is concerned that Hippolyte doesn’t see Larrey often. She’s a teenager and it’s realistic for her to be kind of resentful at times, even though she got too rude and bratty at one point and made me want to punch her.
Blucher is hyped up by German characters as this cruel man who orders the execution of prisoners, but he recognizes Larrey and saves him, so both sides are humanized. It’s also historically accurate so additional kudos!
Elisabeth Larrey clearly loves her husband very much and is upset about Isaure talking smack, which is normal. Elisabeth is the adult so she’s much more understanding about her husband’s occupation, which is fair enough.
5. The Setting
If you’re squeamish about blood, be careful since the movie doesn’t shy away from horrors of war, but the setting actually benefits from that. Nothing is glossed over, even though the amputation isn’t shown so no trigger warnings for the gore.
6. The Acting
Fucking. Excellent. Acting. From. Everyone.
7. The Music
Excellent music, especially during the tenser moments. Really sets the tone!
8. The Conclusion
Please watch this movie. It’s really good and I only have one or two complaints about it. We really need to acknowledge medical staff more often.
On that note, let us finish today’s soirée. Hope you liked the surprise!
Love,
Citizen Green Pixel

AAAAND another one of my mad AUs
Music? On and rocking Courage? Mustered Dignity? Already waved her goodbye OK i’m ready. Apparently summer, having to study for exams i dislike and most of all reading nice books that send me in hyperfixation with the characters give me IDEAS™. After some time spent convincing myself to do it i’ve finally read The Three Musketeers and having loved it to FOLLY, i CLEARLY devoured also Twenty Years After and started the Viscount  of Bragelonne (Athos, i love you, but we’re not talking of you, forgive me my man). This new obsession tonight coupled with my ever present love for LOTR and Silm and since APPARENTLY heat goes up to my head, i thought:
Ok, here we have Aramis, ridiculously always good looking, even at like... 20 years from the first time we meet him he is THE SAME AS ALWAYS and in the Viscount for the little i know for now he didn’t age much either, Devilishly good with horses AND swords (eggrazziearcazzo, you may say, he’s a MUSKETEER) with almost ZERO impulse control (Athos works as impulse control for them, actually) but GREAT cold blood, can apparently sing quite well, some disregard for rules and some great agility and effort in actually always managing to break one of two of those and... oh look, all the boxes check and hear me out. Aramis. Being. MAGLOR FEANORION!!  I talked about this with my darling @tairin, my nice sis who i love and thank very much for being always there to hear me rambling about my obsessions and not having killed me yet. And she is even more of a genius than i suspected! (@joachimnapoleon please don’t kill us) She made me give a second check to who ELSE checked all the boxes and here, the illumination.  Good looking Incredible with horses Apparently skilled in verses/songs Devilish with a sword some disregard for rules NOT imposed by himself Joachim Murat. Being Maglor Feanorion.
Tumblr media
Tolkien fandom out here (@thiswaycomessomethingwicked i get you’re one of us?) tell me if maglor wouldn’t have a portrait of himself like this one of our darling jojo, c’mon! He checks out also the diva personality!!
Anyway, this was my new silly AU, don’t kill me please, i still have to pass biochemistry and see confirmed my credits for cmcf, i’m too young to die and my cats would miss me😂  I hope you at least laughed a bit form this one silly thing.

Happy death day Naps!
Wandering around facebook i found this nice Dumas quote
Do not be deceived, today I am doing better; but I feel the same that the end is approaching. When I am dead, each of you will have the sweet consolation of returning to Europe: you will see one another’s relatives, the other’s friends. As for me, I will see my good ones in heaven...Yes, yes - he added, animating and raising his voice with an inspired accent - yes, Kleber, Dessaix, Bessières, Duroc, Ney, Murat, Massena, Berthier will come to meet me, they will tell me about what we did together, and I will tell the last events of my life: Seeing me again, everyone will go crazy with enthusiasm and glory. We will talk about our wars with Scipio, with Caesar, with Hannibal, and it will be a pleasure... Unless - he added, smiling - they are afraid to see many warriors gathered up there. - A. Dumas, Napoleone.
Just to wish him a happy death-day

Guys i just needed to vent out a bit. We can’t find my cat. we looked into the house, outside, all over the sort-of-village where i live (i live in the country) and we can’t find it. Does any of you have an idea of why a cat can be disappeared in such a way? I just know that a moment she was inside and the other she was nowhere to be seen. I just needed to vent out a bit ‘cause i think i’m panicking just as much as before when we where actively looking for her. Do you have any idea of why a cat can just... fly and boh... i don’t even know if she actually is outside the house, even if i looked everywhere in. She’s injured under her neck, she had a dermatitis that we can’t manage to heal, even if she is way better than some months ago. sorry, just some venting out i don’t know how to cope with this

Excerpt from ‘Gioacchino Murat e l’Italia meridionale’ -- presentation of the King
Sooo guys. Some time ago i got a book, ‘Gioacchino Murat e l’Italia meridionale’ which was introduced to me by @joachimnapoleon and after reading it I thought of making a post about it. Hope you will enjoy it!
So let’s get started! In the third part of the book we have a focus on the people who actually governed Naples, starting with the King and the Queen and proceeding with the ministers, describing how their personalities fitted in their roles and how they actually got their work done; this post will be about our favourite King of Naples, Joachim Murat. (the mistakes in the translation are entirely mine)

Grin Tairin -  Boldness.
On one of several days of patrol of the Silver Knight’s fighters, Grin and Irin were placed on the same team, which was frequently happening again to train teamwork of the siblings, during the patrol a group of giblins was spotted, long before the Silver Knights react, Grin excited go to attack the monsters that were out of their territory.
Silver Knight: Grin, what are you doing? We should attack together as the-
Irin: Do not worry, he told the veterans that if something happened to him, he would be responsible himself, it looks like he wants to have fun today -Irin gives a little giggle-
Going to the goblins, Grin starts with a scramble in the smaller ones and amends with a circular cut up while the bodies of the little ones are in the air, with a smile on his face he follows towards the big ones, the more nervous of the 3 that were present strikes a cut in the direction of Grin, who holds the great sword with his gauntlet, the force of the blow would throw him away, but the impact was gradually diminished as Grin's hand recoiled due to his control of the air element, using his other hand , he cuts the goblin's belly with his katana.
Grin: Man, it stinks, I will have to clean this later...
The other two giblins with large swords revolt, one of them runs towards Grin and tries to hit him by raising his sword and using all his force toward the ground, the youth evade and in a gesture of mockery stands on the part without cut of the sword stuck on the ground.
Grin: You know I’m not a boar, right? It’s easy to evade that.
He gives a mortal over the goblin using their head as support and throws his katana to the stuck barbaric Goblin. The other goblin, angry for how the boy was acting, tried to attack him with theirs sword but he uses a kick to defend himself from the goblin's weapon.
Grin: Hey, don’t turn your back on my partner!
After saying that, he raises his hand a little and the crystal of his gauntlet shines, as response his sword goes back too his hand spinning fast, cutting in half the goblin that was left stuck behind, the other goblin watches the scene shocked, and Grin uses this to cut it from the bottom up, leaving only one remaining.
Grin: 3 Down, one left!
Different from the first Gobrin, it stays unshaken and run in fury to strike the youth that responds in the same way causing a crash of weapons, small sparks goes off of Grin's weapon, they take distance and continue with the impacts of weapons. After some time, the sword begins to accumulate electricity from the Katana, making the goblin feels other type of shock, it was getting strong and strong with each blow, making it’s reactions slower, Grin takes tha chance to kick the monster towards the air, he raises his hand, making the space around the monster begins to feel heaviest, and with the last word...
Grin: 4... DOWN!
The heavy impact makes the monster faint, as it was jumped from a house’s roof.
Grin: All clean, next time I will leave some for you Irin!
Irin: I doubt it but I can’t wait for it -she opens a smile showing that she’s proud of her brother-
Silver Knight: ... How he does that so easily...?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a retelling of an old story I made of Grin, it was a bit confused and tiresome to read so I hope it has improved a bit xP It was also removed from his Info to take less space.
More About Grin and Irin here.

After Action Report: Aeldari Civil War
As you are all aware, last week @littlemangsofwar and I had an Eldar-on-Eldar game against each other.Unfortunately, I haven’t had the right kind of headspace to do a proper narrative report like I did the last time we played a game of 40k. It’s a real shame, as @littlemangsofwar has done a great job with his army list - every unit, every vehicle, every squad leader has a name. It’s actually really cool.
Tumblr media
Zariah the Swift, Consort of Hesperax leads his Wyches, (alongside Lilith herself, of course), while Dalinah the Proud, Tairin Bloodsinger, and Olrai the Brutal lead bands of Kabalite falseborn atop the Raiders Silent Blade and Bringer of Sorrow.
Tumblr media
In lieu of a proper after action report, I’ll share with you the photos I took during the game to show off @littlemangsofwar‘s moody green paint scheme (which looks fantastic). @idisimages came along about halfway, so some of hers are sprinkled in this post as well.
Tumblr media
Next time I’ll keep track of the action a bit more carefully - maybe with some notes, or at least photographing turn dice or something, and I’ll put some actual effort in! Mangs* and I are hoping to have fortnightly wargames of some kind, so hopefully the after action report tag can get some real use on this here blog.
Tumblr media
We each took a 1700 point list. Mine was pure Dark Eldar in three Patrols and an Auxiliary (understrength Incubi); a small band of the Coven-I-have-yet-to-name, every Cult unit I owned, and all my Kabalites. I even brought the unpainted Scourges and a squad of 3rd edition Mandrakes I intend to sell.
Tumblr media
Mang’s band was a Battalion of mixed Dark Eldar, plus the Ynncarne in an Auxiliary Support Detachment. He therefore played his guys therefore as a Ghost Eldar army, but didn’t actually get to reap the benefits of it very much, which guiltily makes me feel like I was at an overwhelming advantage during the game.
Tumblr media
Our mission was two-fold; Take and Hold and Kill the Courier. As Kill the Courier becomes a Sudden Death match (which is a bit boring), we decided that a courier-killer would get an extra 5VP. That meant it was enough to be seriously overwhelming in one direction or another, but not instantly end the game.
I think that next time, I’d like to play some Maelstrom game that requires constant drawing of Tactical Objectives. Some of them look really fun! Especially the insane Dark Eldar objectives like ‘hurt everyone in the other army in different ways’. Hilarious.
Tumblr media
Deployment was the pointy ‘meet in the middle’ wedge. You can see the centre of the board (red marker, above), at the edge of an pre-Fall ruin. Most of the board was pre-Fall ruins, with the pathetic remnants of the buildings of some servitor race lying crumbling amidst the ruins.
The Ynnari and their cultist minions are seeking ancient Eldar artifacts, while the Kabal of the Sun Betrayed, ever eager to collect and preserve the past in their own brilliant, venomous way, are here to do the same. Conflict ensues.
Tumblr media
I deployed the new Coven units on the pointy edge, with the swamp on my right forward swarming with Cult of Splintered Sight beasts. On my left flank was the rest of the Cult, as @littlemangsofwar had deployed his own Wych units there (including Lelith). I thought it was be fun to have the two gladiator gangs fight it out.
It was fun, but mostly for Mangs. I charged into the fray, firing as much darklight weaponry and as many plasma grenades as I could muster to bring down one of his Venoms, so that my Wyches could at least chew on some vulnerable flesh, but nothing worked.
Tumblr media
Eventually, the cultists of the Wych Cult of Strife got out and, even without Cult special rules, started cutting through Wyches. My last few fled under the onslaught, only the Succubus surviving to fall back and await another opportunity.
Tumblr media
Eventually (turn three or so), I did get revenge, as I was able to deep strike my Scourges exactly 9″ from the Succubus Zariah the Swift; she was burned alive by four heat lances. A truly murderous debut from my scourge mercenaries, who now deserve a coat paint! I’m just a bit anxious about their cool wings.
Tumblr media
Here are @littlemangsofwar‘s Scourges from the back, so you can see the nice job he’s done.
In the centre of the board was where all the fun was. Mangs opened the game by incinerating my Clawed Fiend and summoning from his tortured corpse the Ynncarne! In colours of lavender and pale green, looking the very image of the last hopes of a tormented civilisation in decline.
Tumblr media
His squad of jetbikes then charged the one of mine positioned nearby and, despite losing one lad on the way in, did proceed to cut into them pretty neatly. In the swamp itself, my beasts hurled themselves into the Ynncarne who... yeah, he just sliced them to bits. It did hold him up for a turn! That was nice!
Tumblr media
Mangs also blasted the hell out of my newly painted Haemonculus and his little friends - which, to be fair, I did have them sitting on an objective for a reason. They absorbed a tremendous amount of fire, which was pretty cool. That was all they did, until I used that stratagem in the late game which allows you to bring them back, at which point they marched back to the objective and held it again. Very fun, if not very nice of me.
Tumblr media
On my right flank, Mang’s two falseborn squads hunkered down in cover while my trueborn flew around in their venoms. I made little pew pew noises, and had a grand old time... and then my Blasterborn squad evaporated the Ynncarne.
Tumblr media
I feel bad about that.
Tumblr media
My Archon and his Incubi bodyguard, despite losing a couple mates to heavy fire, took care of the Ynncarne’s Reaver pals. I then advanced him to join with the Haemonculus and fight Varathi the Silencer and Varathi’s Blades. Unfortunately, those Eldar on the Path of the Warrior (however debased) fell before these two aeons-old monsters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want to acknowledge at this point that Mangs had some pretty rotten luck and I, uncharacteristically, was rolling pretty well. The Voidraven Bomber, despite its terrifying nature in the fluff, did something somewhere between fuck- and piss-all. I lost a few wounds off the Raider you see there on this fly-by, but not enough to take it out.
Tumblr media
It was about this point where we were willing to call it. @littlemangsofwar‘s ghosts were all but spent. He still had a bit of a lead in terms of points, thanks to taking two objectives early while I was faffing about shooting him from gunboats. We agreed it wasn’t enough, as I was beginning to secure the objectives myself and had vaporised his courier (the Succubus).
Tumblr media
However! I did do something for a bit of a lark which would be a terrible idea in a serious game: I decided to fight Lelith Hesperax with Me’draus the Eclipse, Archon of the Kabal of the Sun Betrayed, the Sunkiller, the Vral’wern’a, &c &c. I mean, I also had the Succubus** join in. I’m not an idiot.
So even though @littlemangsofwar had generously called the game for me, we decided to see how the brutal melee would go.
Tumblr media
I did not go well. Me’draus had his shadowfield fail in the very first roll of the dice, of course, and so Lelith butchered him in a single round of combat. While the Splintered Sight Succubus did manage to inflict a flesh wound on the succeeding round, Lelth quickly put her down as well.
The Haemonculi would charge Me’draus a premium for such a foolish, arrogant waste of his cloned flesh!
Result: VICTORY
See below the cut for a brief summary of our respective lists.
Tumblr media
Kabal of the Sun Betrayed: Alliance of Agony
The Kabal of the Sun Betrayed uses the Kabal of the Flayed Skull attribute. Why not the Kabal of the Black Heart? Because Vect is really bad writing and I hate him, that’s why. Anyway. List:
Archon (agoniser; soulthirst)
2 x 10 Warriors (splinter cannon; sybarites have pistols)
2 x Raiders (splinter racks, trophies)
2 x Trueborn (one with shredders, one with blasters; shredder dracon has phantasm grenades)
2x Venoms (trophies; shredder carrier has snares)
Scourges (4 x heat lances)
Incubi (x4)
These had to go in a fourth detachment (Auxiliary) because they’re below strength. Why? So that they can actually be the Archon’s bodyguard! When I finally paint a car for them, it’ll be worth it.
Means I probably can’t play in tournaments with this kind of list, which is dumb (surely paying 1 CP suffices? eh) but I’m not sure I want to play in tournaments anyway.
The Cult of Splintered Sight uses Cult of the Cursed Blade, mostly because of the +1 strength. The only time the Morale bit came up, the only remaining model was the Hekatrix anyway!
Succubus (glaive, hypex, parasite’s kiss, treacherous deceiver)
totally forgot about treacherous deceiver!
hypex because she doesn’t have a car yet
10 x wyches (one of each wych weapon; adrenalight; agoniser)
Raider (trophies, chain snares [not that I used them])
Beastmaster
4 x Khymerae
Clawed Fiend
2 x Razorwing Flocks
2 x 3 Reavers (1 heat lance each, cluster caltrops)
I modelled them with caltrops, but actually think the other one would come up more often.
The Unnamed Coven used the Prophets of Flesh for this game, but I don’t know if I’ll keep using that. It is definitely useful, but I dislike things associated with the Kabal of the Black Heart (which Urien Rakarth is), and I like the madness/Morale rules associated with the Dark Creed. See how we get on.
Haemonculus (Liquifier Gun, Scissorhand, Ichor Injector)
He was a Diabolical Soothsayer which I totally forgot about.
He’s armed as the model is, but eventually I’ll convert a more modern model for him and this model will be demoted to Wrack.
6 x Wracks.
6 x Mandrakes
These did exactly nothing after I deployed them which, eh. I really like the new (well, 2010 is new to me) models, though...
Tumblr media
Lelith’s Band: Cultists of Death
Lelith Hesperax
Zariah the Swift (Succubus)
blast pistol
3 x 10 Warriors (blaster, dark lance, blast pistol, power sword)
These guys are seriously well-equipped, but unfortunately not well equipped against other light infantry.
Lelith’s Concubines, 10 x Hekatrix Bloodbrides
Led by Elaria the Savage, Syren
Varathi’s Blades (5 x Incubi)
Varathi the Silencer
Jaik’s Band (6 x Reavers)
The Purple Rain (5 x Scourges)
Led by Naimari the Silent with a blast pistol.
1 x Haywire Blaster
They’re actually equipped with soup, but @littlemangsofwar had to shave some points for an even match-up.
Kondro’s Bane, Voidraven
Very disappointed in this unit’s effectiveness. Shatterfield missiles do a lousy 1 damage? D6 shots, 3+ to hit, 3+ to wound means you’re only going to do, like, two damage with the thing per turn. Void lances are better, sure, but you still only get two shots.
Bringer of Sorrow, Silent Blade
Raiders
Sharpstrike, Swiftkill
Venoms
The Ynncarne (1 x Greater Daemon of Ynnead)
Absolute monster, but I think I managed to get lucky on my first time facing him and do exactly what you should do against him: pin him down with chaff and then blast him with, uh, blasters.
Tumblr media
Anyway, it was a great game, and @littlemangsofwar continues to be an absolute gentleman to play wargames against. He said he had fun, and that we might even start doing this regularly! (I think I said that above? That was like an hour of typing ago...) That would be great, right?
Our next game may be an intro game of Full Thrust because: spaceships. Otherwise, maybe some Kill Team, or potentially another game of 8th edition 40K. I haven’t actually had the time to get any painting done this week, but I wouldn’t mind trying out the new scouts. Or maybe the Kabal of the Sun Betrayed could make some slaves of his Imperial Guardsmen...
We’ll have to have a bit of a chat about it!
*Writing out his full tag each time is like calling someone by their full name in casual conversation. It’s bloody annoying.
**I really, really need to give her a name!

Combining all my answers for the Favorite Historical Figure Ask Game into one big post.
I received 3 & 7 from @amypihcs, 4 & 5 from @josefavomjaaga (@tairin also requested 5), 10 & 11 from @clove-pinks, 4 & 15 from @kaxen, 18 & 20 from @pvt-llewellyn, (and @microcosme11 also asked for 20).
#3--Do you have a nickname for them?
I actually don't. While Napoleon loved coming up with nicknames for Murat--King Franconi, the Lazzarone, Fierabras, and Achilles (years before Murat's first son was born) all being ones I've come across--I can't say I have any for him myself, surprisingly.
#4--In your eyes, what is their biggest strength?
This question has been a lot harder to answer than I thought it would be, as a lot of Murat's strengths--his courage, optimism, self-belief, ambition, and drive--also led him to his greatest mistakes and, ultimate, to his unnecessary premature death. But I think he had incredible fortitude, demonstrated not just through numerous grueling military campaigns ranging from the deserts of Egypt to the Russian winter, but also the constant strain he labored under as a peacetime king in Naples. I think he had a lot of people fooled, as the number of memoirists who talk about him being constantly happy-go-lucky and naturally cheerful, really conflicts with the utter misery you encounter when you start to dig deep into his correspondence and see how tormented and stressed he was throughout most of his reign. And with some exceptions (like in 1811, when he was apparently on the brink of a total mental collapse as a result of political conflict with Napoleon), he managed to hold up reasonably well and keep moving forward.
#5--What is the most ridiculous statement on them you have ever read?
Honestly, probably everything that just takes snide little shots at his supposed lack of intelligence. At this point it's just a dead giveaway to me that the person hasn't studied him in any real depth. Murat could be very impetuous, but he was far from the empty-headed moron he's always been portrayed as.
#7-- Let us know three random facts about them!
He wrote poetry. Sadly, not much of it has survived (I've only seen two of his poems).
He liked to translate portions of the Aeneid, and occasionally sprinkled his correspondence with literary references.
His mother was forty-five years old when she gave birth to him, which is pretty amazing, especially for 1767. She ended up living to the age of 84.
#10--What is your favourite quote by / about them?
I love Constant's description of Murat as
a being apart, an object of terror and admiration. But what, so to speak, idealized him, was his truly chivalrous bravery, often carried to the point of recklessness, as though danger had no existence to him. [The entire passage is here.]
Another favorite is from Caroline, writing to her & Murat's mutual friend and former minister, the Count of Mosbourg, in 1838:
Fortunately for his historian, the character of the King is rich enough that there is no need to disguise his faults. Like all passionate beings, the King had his weaknesses, but these, as you say, were always generous ones.
#11--What is your favourite portrayal of them in fiction (e.g. movies, novels etc.)?
I can't really say I have one yet. The only fiction I've read Murat in so far is my own. :P I have a historical fiction novel he's featured in (The Retreat, by Patrick Rambaud), but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.
#15--Describe them in one sentence.
A knight from a chanson de geste and a king from Greek tragedy rolled into one.
#18--What is a trait you share with your favourite historical figure?
A quick temper.
#20--What is your favourite possession that refers to your favourite historical figure (e.g. statue, book etc.)?
My copy of Louise Murat's memoirs of her childhood. Aside from being one of the oldest books I own, it's full of anecdotes and descriptions that have been invaluable to me in fleshing Murat out as a human being and a family man, plus a goldmine of his correspondence I haven't found published anywhere else.
