PRINCESS TEEGRA ✧ FIRE AND ICE (1983)

Frank Frazetta’s poster for the animated film Fire and Ice (1983).  The film was a collaboration between Frazetta and animator/director Ralph Bakshi, using characters both men had created.  The script was provided by comic book veterans Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas.

Investors provided funding quickly for Fire and Ice  because Bakshi’s previous fantasy film, Wizards (1977), had done well both in the box office and on home video.  They also hoped to cash-in on the wave of barbarian fantasy films started by Conan the Barbarian (1982).

Unfortunately, Fire and Ice did not live up to its promise.  Critics were less than kind, and it bombed at the box office, not even making back its meager budget of $1.2 million.

There was talk years ago of director Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, Spy Kids, Sin City) remaking this film in live-action, and Sony Pictures even secured the rights for him to do so.  To date, however, that project appears to be lost in limbo.

The Crown Princess of Firekeep, daughter of High Queen Vasha and King Consort Jarol. While intelligent and cunning Teegra chafes under the expectations of her station and longs for new experiences.

NEED TO KNOWS:

Teegra is from the 83 film Fire and Ice. It's trash but it's my trash.

I want Teegra to subvert a lot of fantasy tropes that have become weirdly prevalent. So Firekeep operates on a matrilineal line. Like the Ancient Egyptians, they have no real concept of Virginity. They're sexually open, etc.

Teegra herself is an experienced young woman in her twenties who has no problems asserting what she wants.

I'm not too fussed about worldbuilding. Fire and Ice good dumb fun so I don't want to get too hung up on worldbuilding. Teegra herself is easily exported to most fantasy settings.

My favourite scene from Fire and Ice is when Queen Juliana puts Nekron and Teegra in the same room and basically said “I want grandkids!” and Nekron was like “mom do I look straight to you!?” and then Teegra was like “Oh Nekron you poor broken soul I can fix you” and Nekron was like “lmao bitch please I’m evil as fuck and I love it”

This movie is underrated
