  A Defiant Stand Against Repeated Harassment

In a resolute declaration, the United States pledged unwavering support to its Philippine ally as tensions escalated in the South China Sea. The People's Republic of China's (PRC) repeated harassment in the region has raised concerns, with the U.S. emphasizing its commitment to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Philippines.   International Tribunal Rejects PRC's Claims The PRC's actions, deemed inconsistent with international law, have faced condemnation. The 2016 ruling by an international tribunal, binding on both the Philippines and the PRC, emphatically stated that the PRC holds no lawful territorial or maritime claim to the Second Thomas Shoal. The call for respecting high seas freedoms of navigation reverberates as the United States urges the PRC to adhere to international law.  

Mutual Defense Treaty Strengthens Resolve

Reaffirming the strength of the U.S.-Philippines alliance, the United States highlights the applicability of Article IV of the 1951 U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty. This extends protection to armed attacks on Philippine armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft, including those of its Coast Guard, anywhere in the South China Sea.   Historical Agreements Cement Alliance The US-Philippines Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), signed in 2014, plays a pivotal role. Allowing the U.S. military access to Philippine military bases, including those in the South China Sea, this agreement bolsters the strategic partnership between the two nations.  

The Legal Battle and International Support

Philippines Prevails in UNCLOS Arbitration In 2016, the Philippines initiated arbitral proceedings under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) against the PRC's nine-dash line claim to the South China Sea. Subsequently, in a landmark decision in 2020, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) ruled decisively in favor of the Philippines. The PCA deemed the PRC's claim invalid and explicitly acknowledged violations of the Philippines' sovereign rights in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Importantly, the United States stands unwaveringly firm in its support of the PCA ruling, considering it not only "final" but also "legally binding."  

Philippines-China Tensions in Recent Years

Escalating Conflicts in the South China Sea The PRC's actions in the South China Sea have escalated tensions, creating conflict situations in recent years.   Seizure of Scarborough Shoal In 2016, the PRC seized Scarborough Shoal, a Philippine-controlled reef, amplifying territorial disputes in the region.   Militarization and Harassment Subsequent years saw the PRC engaging in militarization efforts, constructing artificial islands and military facilities on disputed reefs and shoals. The PRC's Coast Guard further intensified the situation in 2018, harassing and blocking Philippine vessels and resupply missions in the South China Sea.   Provocative Actions and Collisions The situation reached a boiling point in 2021 when the PRC's Coast Guard fired water cannons at a Philippine Coast Guard vessel. In 2023, dangerous maneuvers by the PRC's Coast Guard near Philippine vessels resulted in collisions, endangering Filipino lives and escalating the risk of accidents in the South China Sea. News from Belize, 11 July

The Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) ventured to the Belize Defence Force's Forward Operating Base (FOB) at the Sarstoon River, which has been abandoned for over a year.

The BTV wants to maintain a presence at the FOB due to the ongoing territorial dispute with Guatemala and the importance of the area in the ICJ case.

The government has now acknowledged the importance of the FOB and is working to allocate funds for repairs, but the BTV is willing to assist in rebuilding the base.

2. A woman in Progresso Village was stabbed to death during an argument.

3. During a Senate meeting, Senator Kevin Herrera criticized Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) for not exploring alternative energy sources such as solar power.

Herrera mentioned that when Mexico had supply issues, it could have resulted in blackouts for Belize. Herrera blamed the lack of options on the country's policies and regulators, stating that they had not done enough to prevent this situation. He also highlighted that without Mexican supply, there are currently no other viable options, except for domestic supply, which barely meets demand.

Herrera warned that if it wasn't for the rains in July, there could have been a major crisis with severe consequences for businesses and households.

4. Belize has embraced CARICOM's decision for free movement of CARICOM nationals, allowing for unlimited movement among member countries.

The decision does not impact Belize's current laws surrounding migration, as immigration officers will still interview CARICOM nationals to determine if they meet entry requirements.

The implementation of unlimited free movement is expected to be completed by March of next year.

#TBT borderlxne April 1, 2019 The braid was made of extensions i had in April, July, August, November, December 2018. Through this artwork i aim to weave my silenced-ness into a wider, collective narrative. It’s about personal borders bridging political ones. Hair, Black hair is such a sense and sign of identity.  The war wages on and while we go natural or not, there is still a lot of rejection and shaming for using hair extensions: weaves or box braids. Supposedly we pretend to look white with fake fibres, honestly for me it is just a protective style. On the continent it was how we identified, when our ancestors were taken away, they braided seeds in cornrows. African rice is in maroon villages of Suriname.  When we were taken away our hair was shorn and we were scattered by language. We were told our hair needed to be relaxed. We were told and shown and done to a great deal. This action was done 9 days before the originally scheduled date of the referendum on whether to settle the centuries-long Belize-Guatemala dispute at the International Court of Justice (because of court proceedings in Belize on how the referendum was fired, the referendum was held on May 8, 2019) The audacity of this does make one contemplate Chronixx's "Capture Land" that Spain and the UK decided that Belize, (once called British Honduras, before that the Settlement) was either of their possession when all of this is Maya land boggles the mind. Then enslaved Africans were brought here, displaced and dispossessed. And no one asked us anything. Imagine claiming land that aint yours, bringing people as property and plopping them down to work said land and chasing the Indigenous owners off it (in the case of Belize, the Maya) "tale as old as time" huh? Settler mentality abounds. DanderSpritz is the companion to the FuzzBunch exploitation framework. Both were leaked by The Shadow Brokers on April 14th, 2017 as part of the “Lost in Translation” leak. These tools are widely accepted as belonging to the Equation Group (NSA). It’s a modular, stealthy, and fully functional framework for post-exploitation activities on Windows and Linux hosts. DanderSpritz modules include tools to evade detection by bypassing anti-virus & security tools, disable and delete Windows event logs, establish persistence, perform local and network reconnaissance, move laterally within a network, and exfiltrate data.

Exploitation frameworks allow attackers to select, configure and deploy different malicious scripts, or modules, against one or more targets.
