How do you feel about Bollywood constantly appropriating Punjabi culture yet staying quiet on the farmers protest (which has been predominantly Punjabi)? For an industry that seems to love ripping off their culture, music, dance and making jokes at their expense, it seems pretty sad that so few in Bollywood have used their platform to spread awareness. It’s not just a politically issue of course, it’s the largest protest in history and men and women well into their 70s and 80s are being brutalized at the hands of their own government and police. It is much more a humanitarian issue than political, where the rich get richer and the poor working class is stripped of its rights. Sad to see that they don’t have a conscience that is telling them to stand up for the people and use their platform for good.

I know this question is from awhile back but why do my feelings matter here? Like, I'm learning about the farmers protest at the same rate as the rest of the non-Punjabi world. I know that Punjabi culture is prominent in Bollywood (is appropriating the right word if the driving forces behind it are Punjabi/North Indian themselves? genuinely asking). But while I've tried to collect info on it and share what I've learned, my voice should not be the one people are seeking out. I can say generally that celebs wading into politics can be dangerous, because I think by now that's common sense, but beyond 2+2=4 I am an Irish+Eastern European American from the Midwest........if I'm the person people are coming to with questions about farmers in Punjab, those people are already terribly misguided. The only thing I know about farming is driving past the Amish farms where I grew up and thinking wow these guys would actually be hot if they shaved the beards and lost the suspenders :(

Long story short, I generally believe that protestors need to be listened to, this is not happening in a vacuum and regardless of what the best choice is, their complaints deserve to be addressed. But I have nothing to offer someone looking for deeper information. My husband and I love to dine out and all of our favourite places are small, locally owned restaurants. I also enjoy posting pictures of food on Instagram, and though it may seem a tacky habit in the eyes of some people, for me it is my way of showing appreciation and support for the restaurant. Whenever I post something, I am hoping that it encourages other people to try that place or make them aware that it even exists in the first place!

The local restaurant industry is one of the hardest hit during the Covid-19 pandemic. Restaurants, with their razor-thin margins, depend on customers to stay afloat, and with everyone stuck at home, the sad reality is that there is a lot of laid-off restaurant staff, and local restaurant owners are having to find creative ways to keep their doors open. Instead of closing their doors, some restaurants have pivoted to delivery/pickup only services, some are selling pre-prepared meals to heat at home, and some like King’s Head Pub and Bodegoes have re-opened as a grocery-delivery service. My husband and I are making an effort to support the local restaurants by still ordering delivery/pickup with the hope that whatever little support we can give help them make it to other side of these crazy times. How else can you support restaurants during the pandemic? Follow them on Instagram, buy gift cards, order directly from them and do pickup if you can (food delivery services such as Skip and Doordash pretty much eats what little profit restaurants make in commissions), and tip generously!

Even before the pandemic, we made a conscious effort to support locally owned businesses and restaurants. Of course, not everything (or everyone) local is good (ahem, Nygard and Fun Mountain) so do your research, but I can say with certainty that everything good is local! There are many reasons to support local businesses. Many of our local businesses pay living wages. What does that mean? It means, yes, you will have to pay a little bit more for your coffee or your donut or your book, but that also means you are supporting a business that ensure their staff are paid fairly. Many of our local businesses and restaurants focus on sustainability – for example, they use environmentally friendly containers and they support local growers, farmers and suppliers (which means the ingredients and raw materials don’t have to travel far!). Supporting local means more of your dollars stay within the community – to the owners, the suppliers, the staff – local people who are very passionate about their craft and their business, and their profits are then reinvested to our community. Aside from the economic reasons, our local businesses are also very active in giving back to the community, for example, the first week when all the restaurants were forced to close their dining rooms to customers, many of them came together to donate their extra inventory to Chef Ben Kramer who then cooked all the food donations for local soup kitchens. Last, but not the least, these local businesses are what makes Winnipeg unique. Think of the last time you travelled somewhere? Where did you go to eat? Somewhere local, that you can only find in that place, I hope! Well, why wouldn’t you do the same at home?

So how do you know which businesses and restaurants to support? A lot of them have social media presence, so follow them on Instagram. They usually have stories that gives you a glimpse on how they run their business, for example, I saw a story where the owners visited a farm and showed us how it practiced ethical farming practices. I mean, I wish we could all be vegan or vegetarian, but the reality is the majority will not be, but that does not mean we have to support inhumane, factory farming methods. Instagram stories and posts will also have specials that you won’t normally find on the menu, so it’s a great way to try new things! I know that it is sometimes hard not to let the prices dictate where we decide to buy something, but if you can, think of the reasons why something is a little bit more expensive (fair wages, economies of scale – small businesses can’t compete with Bezos! -- quality of ingredients, keeping local dollars local) and make your decisions on value, not cost.

Famous not only because of its environment but also because you get to discern how the multicultural Indian population lives in peace with the Indo Tibetan population. The immediate central railroad station is at Pathankot and is 85 km away. Dharamshala is very well-connected to Delhi. The trip is just about 520 kilometres from Delhi. The road from Delhi via Chandigarh is nearly 12 hours.

You can enjoy a boat lift across the Dal Lake and glimpse the royal Kangra Fort, pay respect to the Bhagsunath Temple devoted to Lord Shiva, and simultaneously celebrate the cascading Bhagsu falls.

There are various monasteries to visit, the Dalai Lama Temple Complex, the Kangra Art Museum, and discern the beautiful tea farm on the foothills of Kangra valley.

Kasauli – The Gateway To     Himachal

Kasauli is an excellent avoidance from the hustle-bustle of the town that is most common in cities like Mumbai. Get your hands on some Himachal tour packages from Mumbai and enjoy the tremendous peaceful sites to visit. Almost on the outskirts of Punjab and Haryana, it is adequately retained by routes. The closest airport is in Chandigarh, 70 km off. The nearest train depot is Sonwara which is 4km off. It takes 7 hours from Delhi and is 293 km.

My Relationship with Nature

Nature has always intrigued me in some way or another, however, I believe my relationship with nature has evolved immensely over my adult life. As a child who grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, I felt that nature was far from me because I was often confined to the business of the city. I travelled twice during my childhood, once to Vancouver, BC and once to Punjab, India. Although I do not recall much about my visit to Vancouver, Punjab was a completely foreign and incredibly enriching experience. I was only five years old when my uncle and cousins took me to their farm in Punjab and introduced me to all the animals and farmland they maintained. I watched the vegetation and wheat grow on our farm each day as I helped my uncle with the minor tasks I was able to do as a little girl. I saw first-hand the deeply rooted love and attachment they had for their motherland and how they bonded with it through nature. At my father’s village, I would cater to the pigeons kept on the rooftop of their home and would watch them fly and return to their home safely each night. I was mesmerized by these experiences in Punjab as I felt more in tune with nature than ever before, but unfortunately these experiences were very short lived.

Although people from the GTA travel to see the numerous waterfalls and trails that Hamilton beholds, I was not aware of this because my family was not too keen on the outdoors. Like most children, I loved playing outdoors, going to the park, riding my bicycle, and playing outdoor sports but I was also not the kind of child who collected bugs and rocks. Thus, I would say my relationship with nature was very minimal during my childhood. I believe my relationship with nature changed after my first camping trip in the summer of 2018. My sister and I planned to go to the infamous Algonquin park with our dog for about 3 days but ended up staying longer after falling in love with the concept of living outdoors. Camping was a huge learning experience for me as it put my survival techniques to the test, but it also grew my love for nature immensely. I finally understood how captivating and serene nature is as I canoed across the lake, went on long trails with my dog, and listened to the buzzing of the animals and critters as I fell asleep each night.

I believe my sister offered me a 'sense of place' as her growing love for nature developed my unique relationship with it as well. After our camping experience, my sister has constantly encouraged me to explore nature with her whether that means going on more trails or travelling to see beautiful sites within Ontario. She has taught me an abundance of information regarding plants and animals and has encouraged me to be more involved with the outdoors in my own time. Recently, I travelled back to Vancouver to enjoy the beauty of British Columbia once again as I did not remember it the first time. My experience in Vancouver left me in awe of nature and has inspired me to make travelling an annual goal going forward. Additionally, I routinely meditate and practice grounding in nature, I care for many different house plants, and I try my best to maintain a sustainable lifestyle for the betterment of our planet. I know my relationship with nature will continuously evolve and become stronger the more I engage with it thus, I am working towards creating more opportunities for travel and adventure within nature this upcoming spring/summer!

        Ambassador of UAE Mr Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salem Al-zabi called on Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar at his office on Monday and discussed matters of mutual interest including promotion of bilateral relations.

The UAE expressed its interest in investment in health and construction sectors while the CM pointed out that Pakistan and UAE enjoy historically important brotherly relations. He invited the UAE investors to invest in special economic zones adding that they should also invest in Walton Business Hub and River Ravi Urbanfront Projects as vast opportunities are available in such projects. Meanwhile, work has been started to construct a five-star hotel near Qaddafi Stadium for the stay of foreign teams. An underground or overhead bridge will also be constructed to link stadium and the hotel, he added. The CM emphasized that facilities have been provided to investors on a priority basis while easing the process of issuance of NOCs. Special incentives are provided to the investors and all matters pertaining to investment are dealt with by me, the CM added and announced to welcome the UAE investment companies as it has played a commendable role in the development of the country.

        The UAE ambassador congratulated the chief minister over successful holding of Cholistan Desert Rally-2021 and best arrangements for cricket matches in Lahore. I have brought a message of good wishes on behalf of UAE Minister Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan who has thanked you for extending full support for investment. The UAE companies are interested in investment and are ready to invest in SEZs. The UAE visa centre will also be opened soon in Lahore, he added. Chairman P&D, CEO PBIT and others were also present.

CM CHAIRS 41ST PROVINCIAL CABINET MEETING

LAHORE, February 15:

Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar chaired the 41st meeting of the provincial cabinet at his office on Monday and approved the procedure of flats' allotment in LDA City Naya Pakistan Apartments under Section 19 of management and transfer of properties of Development Authorities Act 2014. The meeting authorized the LDA to enter into an agreement with Bank of Punjab for the project as 4000 apartments will be constructed in the first phase. A flat would cost around Rs27 lac and 50 per cent quota will be reserved for the general public. 20 per cent share will be held for provincial government employees, 10 per cent for federal government employees and another 20 per cent quota will be allocated to LDA officials. The CM directed to reserve special quota for journalists and lawyers as well.

The meeting approved to upgrade low-grade employees of the civil secretariat and decided to promote drivers, auto-electricians, mechanics and despatch-riders in next grade. This will facilitate more than 11 thousand low-grade employees. Approval of the 200-bed mother & child hospital at the venue of old grain market godown in Multan was accorded along with the release of Rs 500 million. The meeting approved to establish two new cement plants in DG Khan and Mianwali and the CM directed to further expedite the issuance of NOCs to pending applications.

Meanwhile, it was decided to give health professional and special healthcare allowance to the doctors of the Population Welfare Department. The participants decided to constitute a high-level committee to reconsider the regularization scheme of Katchi Abadis with the direction to submit comprehensive recommendations. The law department was directed to review matters pertaining to Punjab Consolidation of Holdings Ordinance 1960 to submit recommendations for early completion of the consolidation process.

The cabinet also approved the establishment of the provincial drug monitoring team and draft Punjab Hepatitis Rules. Amendments in Pakistan Travel Agency Act 1976 and draft of Punjab Museum Act 2021 were also approved along with the approval of terms and conditions for the posts of registrar and controller of examinations of government universities. Alongside, approval to amend the Punjab Police Department (Ministerial Posts) Rules 2017 was given for the change in eligibility criterion of stenographers.

The meeting decided to enhance the registration and renewal fee of private wildlife breeding farms and approved an amendment in the Forest Act and Punjab Urban and Peri-urban Forest Policy 2020. Similarly, the cabinet authorized Infrastructure Development Authority Punjab to work on development projects in Islamabad on a fast-track basis. It was further approved to implement MIT Act in Mayo Hospital and King Edward Medical College along with the approval of amendment in the Punjab Medical Teaching Institutions (Reforms) Amendment Act 2020.

The cabinet constituted a committee to review and submit its recommendations relating to the leasing out of state land to Multan Gymkhana. The meeting was also briefed about the agriculture department's performance and a ministerial committee was constituted for facilitating the farmers. This committee, comprising of agri. experts, will submit its final recommendations to the cabinet. Meanwhile, the proceedings of 40th cabinet meeting was endorsed along with the endorsement of 48th, 49th, 50th meetings of cabinet standing committee for finance and development as well as 44th, 45th, 46th and 47th meetings of cabinet standing committee for legislation. The cabinet meeting which lasted for more than three hours also offered Fateha for the departed soul of the father of provincial minister Nauman Langrial.

CM SEEKS REPORT ABOUT THE MURDER OF GIRL CHILD

Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar has sought a report from RPO Sheikhupura about the murder of a three-year-old girl child in Nankana Sahib district and directed to early arrest the criminals. Strict action should be initiated against the perpetrators of the crime and provision of justice be ensured, he added and extended sympathies to the bereaved family.
