In addition to these various styles, each region within Europe exhibited an artistic style in a very distinct way, meaning that some Medieval Art pieces varied greatly from region to region despite being created within the same time period. These art phases have come to be seen as Early Christian Art, Byzantine art, Pre-Romanesque and Romanesque art, and Gothic art. Influenced by the artistic heritage of the previous Roman era and the iconographic customs of the early Christian Church, the Medieval period existed as an amalgamation of these artistic heritages.ĭue to this fusion of styles, Medieval Art essentially went on to produce some incredibly iconic artworks due to the distinct artistic style that developed.ĭue to the vastness of the Medieval Art period, the movement can generally be divided into a number of distinct periods and styles. Originating in Northern Europe after the Roman Empire collapsed, Medieval Art included some of the most major art movements and periods known to develop within art history. 7.4 Notre Dame de Paris (built between 1163 – 1345 A.D.).7.3 Palatine Chapel (built between 790 – 805 A.D.).7.2 The Lindisfarne Gospels (written between 715 – 720 A.D.).Contributors approach the concept of medieval abstraction from a multitude of perspectives-formal, semiotic, iconographic, material, phenomenological, epistemological. How does it make or destroy meaning in the process? Does it suggest the failure of figuration, the faltering of iconography? Does medieval abstraction function because it is imperfect, incomplete, and uncorrected-and therefore cognitively, visually demanding? Is it, conversely, precisely about perfection? To what extent is the abstract predicated on theorization of the unrepresentable and imperceptible? Does medieval abstraction pit aesthetics against metaphysics, or does it enrich it, or frame it, or both? Essays in this collection explore these and other questions that coalesce around three broad themes: medieval abstraction as the untethering of the image from what it purports to represent abstraction as a vehicle for signification and abstraction as a form of figuration. The Kennicott Bible - Moses Ibn Zabarah and Joseph Ibn Hayyim,1476
This Hebrew Bible was created in La Coruña, Spain in the fifteenth century. It was written by Moses Ibn Zabarah and illustrated by Joseph Ibn Hayyim for their patron the “admirable youth, Isaac, son of the late honorable and beloved Don Solomon di Braga.” It is popularly known as the Kennicott Bible after it was purchased by Oxford’s Radcliffe Library on the recommendation of Christopher Kennicott in 1770, although today it resides in the Bodleian. 
The top page, made of Hebrew characters shaped by figures of animals and people, both nude and clothed, reads “I, Joseph Ibn Hayyim, illuminated and completed this book.”
The second image shows a page that contains micrography (a defining trait in Jewish manuscripts of this period), written in an elaborate circular pattern.

The Kennicott Bible with accompanying commentary volume, London: Facsimile Editions, 1985
The Kennicott Bible takes its name from Benjamin Kennicott (1718-1783), the Oxford canon who acquired this exquisite manuscript and in April 1771, sold it to Oxford’s Radcliffe Library, which then transferred it to the Bodleian Library in 1872. The book, which includes the text of both the entire Hebrew Bible and Rabbi David Kimhi’s (1160-1235) popular grammatical treatise Sefer mikhlol, was produced over the course of about ten months by the master scribe, vocaliser, and masorator Moses ben Jacob Ibn Zabara in collaboration with the illuminator and illustrator Joseph Ibn Hayyim. It was completed in the northwestern Spanish city of La Coruña in 1476 on behalf of Isaac ben Don Solomon de Braga, who apparently took it with him into exile after the Spanish expulsion of 1492.
Not only is Ibn Zabara’s text bold and clear, with the micrographic Masorah periodically inscribed in geometric patterns, but Ibn Hayyim’s playful, colourful, and intricate artistic program—inspired by that of the Cervera Bible, as well as by Islamic, Christian, and secular motifs—bears elegant witness to the multiculturalism of pre-expulsion Spain.
