"Am I having a gay crisis?" "Why does it have to be a crisis? Maybe you're just having a gay." Flora's scissors gave a long rip, making Rex wince. "You can notice someone's hotness without being attracted to them. I can tell when a man is attractive. It doesn't mean I'd date one." "But I feel nervous every time I'm around her." "Are you sure that's not because she keeps beating you up?" "That's almost always my fault." "That's a dollar." Rex huffed. "What? That doesn't count." "It counts. Dollar in the jar." Rex grumbled, but she dug a dollar out of her wallet and crossed the room to stuff it into the mason jar on Flora's desk with the taped-on label, Self-Depreciation Jar. "What are you gonna buy when this is full?" "Something that's good for self-esteem." The scissors gave another rip. "By the way, I'm getting you an interview with the Circular to talk about the dinosaurs."

If you haven’t read “the Meister of Decimen City” by brenna Raney and you still follow me because you like queer stories about superheroes and also morally grey main characters (or dinosaurs, plenty of those here), I’d recommend checking it out. Most fun I’ve had reading a book in a while

March 2024 Reading Round Up
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stand Out Books from March Three Kinds of Lucky by Kim Harrison New world from the author of the long running Hollows series! I loved the world building here, just the mechanics of magic and how you get an advanced degree in magic when the general public doesn't know magic exists. Really fun!
The Meister of Decimen City by Brenna Raney Y'all, this was FUN. This book is bonkers, but in a very, sure, of course that's the next logical step once you've introduced superheros and cloned dinosaurs. I rooted for Rex so hard and I love the way her city and friends love her.
What I'm Reading Now I started Babel and I'm going to try to finish that in the next few days before it goes back to the library. I can tell this book is going to get difficult and I've been procrastinating it a bit because of that, but I don't want to wait several weeks to get it back from the library if it goes back. I'm also almost done with a re-read of the manga Dengeki Daisy. I love how much it shows when it was written, it's all about hacking and so clearly right at the early internet. Otherwise, I'm in the middle of a couple of series, an academic book about Medieval spices, and still going through the webcomic Digger.
What I'm Looking Forward to in April I've got the last volume of Kaguya-sama: Love is War sitting on my shelf. My husband and I have watched the anime and been reading through all the manga together, so it's a little bittersweet to see it end. I just finished Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries and really enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to the sequel. I've also got the new T. Kingfisher What Feasts at Night on hold at the library, so that will be fun!
Reading Challenges I'm a little ahead on my Book Riot Read Harder challenge, so being a little picky about what to read next. I'm trying to decide if Babel counts as a book about books, or if it's really a book about words. We'll see as I get through it and I might pick something else for that prompt. For my Reading Around the World challenge, I've got The Tower of the Antilles by Achy Obejas on hold for Cuba.

May 2024
Tumblr media
(Series: Sousou no Frieren | Artist: Abe Tsukada)
May was a rough month, light novels wise, for me. I was stuck reading Sherlock Academy for three weeks and cannot say that I enjoyed my time with it. I'm really glad I decided to follow that up with the Frieren novel as that was such a breeze to read.
Speaking of Frieren, I have now read 10 volumes of the manga and I love it. I think this a rare situation where the anime and manga are as equally good. The anime imbues a lot of charm into moments that were small in the manga, but they were only able to that because the source material is so solid to begin with. I do like the pacing more in the manga. I feel like the anime did sometimes drag out certain story beats and fights to the point where they started to get tiring. While I can appreciate the gorgeous animation of the anime, I also appreciate the manga's willingness to skip over fights in favor of highlighting the small moments that make life worth living and I feel that attitude is more in keeping with the series' themes. tldr: I love both versions of the story for different reasons and am eager to consume more of it.
Other highlights of the month: I read The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi and it is currently my favourite book I've read this year. It's a junior fiction/middle grade novel taking inspiration from Filipino mythology. I love the characters, especially my boy Saso, and the story made me laugh and cry in equal measure. I read Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones for the first time and, while I don't think it's as good as the Studio Ghibli film, I'm glad I read it as it was cool to read the inspiration for the movie, and there were some plot points that I wish were incorporated into the movie. Also really enjoyed The Meister of Decimen City by Brenna Raney, and The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph Right.
On the manga side of things, Shiba Inu no Atachitachi vol. 1 is 113 pages of pure cuteness and delight. I'm really glad I picked it up on a whim. It's going to be my go to for when I need something light and fluffy to heal my heart. I'm a bit confused about how it's published though. Bookwalker and Kindle have it as 4 volumes, but it looks like there's only one physical volume so maybe they only released the first volume as a physical or maybe the physical volume is compilation of the four volumes? Regardless, I love it, and I can't wait to read the remaining volumes and get my fill of pure cuteness.

Sherlock Academy 2

okay my wrists are sore today so i'm definitely taking a break from writing 💀 if i post a writing update today, someone please scold me lol.
IN THE MEANTIME, i'm trying to read more superhero books! does anyone have recs? so far what i've got on my shelves is dreadnought/sovereign (april daniels), not your sidekick series (cb lee), renegades (marissa meyer), and the meister of decimen city (brenna rainey). anything else that i'm missing? it doesn't have to be "good" (in fact i kind of don't like a lot of superhero books lol) but i'm trying to study the techniques they use to slowly reveal information about their settings, because obviously that's a big thing in speculative fiction.
