Beautiful photos of María Montez and her sisters.

These photos come from the personal archive of Armando Gracia Sanfiel who gave them to Antonio Perez Arnay who published them in the biographical book of María Montez "La Reina del Tecnicolor" (Editorial Filmoteca Canaria, 1995).

Armando Gracia Sanfiel was Aquilino Gracia García's son, and Aquilino was María's uncle (her dad's brother), so Armando was María's cousin.

María sent these three photos to her cousin Armando as they kept contact through letters, Armando was living in Madrid and he didn't know anything about María's private life or from his Dominican family, he just knew from his uncle Isidoro and from his family from La Palma and Teruel.

María and her cousin Armando first reached contact when he sent her a letter when she was living in Hollywood telling her he was her cousin as their dads were brothers and from that day María started sending him letters with photos and she was really interested about her family in Spain and asked him lots of questions about them.

i can probably help with that! it would really depend on who/what you're interested in exploring. most characters/families have a few good starter comics that are shorter or help you get a good feel for what they're like. i think team-up books are generally a nice way to ease out into other arenas, whether that be titans jla jsa jli etc. they're usually pretty lighthearted and introduce you to lots of new characters while still having characters you're familiar with.

other than batman my wheelhouses are mostly green arrow and flash, so i can be much more help with those two lol. i'm not sure what you've already read/what you're interested in but I can point you in some general directions

if you're reading green arrow for the first time I think it's easiest to start with volume three (the 2001 run). I think that one's the first longer run I ever read in its entirety and it basically made me fall in love with comics as a whole. it definitely has its problems, I'm not trying to say it's perfect lol, but for the most part it's very fun and a good introduction if you've never read arrowfam comics before. especially if you want to see connor and mia! the first two arcs (quiver and archer's quest) are especially good, but overall it just feels like you're hanging out with ollie and his adopted kids and fighting goofy villains in star city. it is 75 issues long but it went by SUPER fast for me. if you want a shorter story there is also green arrow year one and green arrow stranded, which are nice intros to ollie!

for flash, i would say one of the best intros would be to read #62-65 of flash v2. it's a version of wally's origin and also the start of waid's run, and like. it's so good lol. i would of course recommend impulse 1995 if you haven't read that already. all of flash v2 might be a little much if you're just looking to ease in, there are some arcs like 'the return of barry allen' and 'dead heat' that i think give you a feel for the comic as a whole.

for good starter wonder woman stories i'd recommend wonder woman: the hiketeia and wonder woman historia. for a longer comic i'd go with the perez run (wonder woman volume 2). i am definitely not qualified to talk on the glc but i'd assume stories like emerald dawn would be a good place to start? kyle's run on gl 1990 would probably also be a safe bet. it wasn't really for me but i am definitely in the minority there.

i am really not the person you'd want to talk to about superman, aquaman, shazam, etc. i'll get there one day but probably not for a while lol. if you have more specific questions about different corners of dc or specific families you're looking into I'd love to help!

FAMILY HISTORY: Named after the saint Francis, Isko grew up mainly with his grandparents in the island of Mindoro, in the Philippines. His mother met his father while working up north of the country. She came home pregnant but the businessman promised to marry her. Preparations were made but unfortunately, fate had a different plan for the new family as it took Isko’s father way too early. 

Isko’s mother struggled to take care of him but with her parents help, she continued to work outside of the island. Eventually, learning about their late son’s family, they tracked Christina and Isko and found them living in Mindoro. They kept in contact and supported Isko. Since Isko is an American citizen as his birth was reported by his parents to the US Embassy right after, Isko’s father’s family suggested that he come live in the US. Isko refused whenever the subject was brought up but made a deal with his grandparents that he’d come to the US after he finishes college in the Philippines. He didn’t want to leave his mother on her own. Isko’s father’s family at this point were doing well financially but bad investments caused them to lose many of their fortunes that by the time Isko came to the US to live with them, they were struggling themselves. 

Used to living with what he only needed to go on, this did not bother Isko and instead worked on bettering himself. Eventually, his mother was able to join him in Chicago. His mother mostly stays in the Philippines with her husband and their children, managing Isko’s businesses there.

— born  and  raised  as the middle child in  a  boisterous  family  of  seven,  in  a  town  close  to  pittsburgh.  his  parents  owned  a  mexican  restaurant  downtown,  a  bit  of  a  hole  in  the  wall  but  with  a  rather  hardcore  customer  base. they claim the birria is to die for. santi would agree. — had  a  close  knit  family  unit  in  the  region,  with  regular  family  gatherings  including  more  cousins  than  you  could  count  on  both  your  hands.  the  entire  family  were  hardcore  sports  fans,  and  so  santi  grew  up  sporting  the  yellow  and  black  of  the  penguins  from  the  moment  he  could  walk. — as  a  kid,  you  could  find  him  with  skates  on  his  feet  more  often  than  not.  he  was  quite  the  busy  bee,  the  word  no  not  being  part  of  his  vocabulary  alongside  maintaining  rather  impressive  stats  as  a  winger  and  keeping  up  his  grades.  at  eighteen,  he  was  recruited  by  cornell  university  on  a  hockey  scholarship. — whereas  he  used  to  skate  through  life,  the  college  experience  was undeniably harder.  stacks  of  homework,  early  morning  practice  and  a  constant  fear  of  missing  out  proved  to  be  a  disastrous  cocktail.  by  his  sophomore  year,  mediocre  performance  made  it  clear  he  wasn't  cut  out  for  the  nhl  and  although he continued to play, his  focus  began  to  shift  more  and  more  towards  his  degree. — around  this  time,  santiago  created  his  twitch  account  where  he  began  hosting  study  with  me  streams.  he  needed  a  way  to  hold  himself  accountable,  but  it  helped  others  in  the  process.  study  breaks  turned  into  full  blown  conversations,  and  handfuls  of  viewers  turned  into  hundreds.  his  streams  started  out  as  faceless,  but  a  curious  audience  convinced  him  to  start  showing  his  face.  it  might  have  had  something  to  do  with  a  fair  few  people  falling  head  over  heels  with  the  mysterious,  deep  voice. — his  evergrowing  audience  made  it  easy  to  continue  streaming  full  time  after  graduation.  study  streams  turned  into  weekly  catch  ups  and  gaming  streams,  movie  watchalongs  and  commentaries.  in  the  span  of  a  few  years,  his  social  media  accounts  amassed  half  a  million  followers  and  made  him  a  household  name  in  the  world  of  social  media  personalities.

— his  sudden  career  change  still  came  as  a  surprise,  to  himself  as  much  as  the  rest  of  the  world.  being  an  out  and  proud  bisexual  mexican-american,  he  became  a  popular  fancast  for  alexander  claremont-diaz  in  red,  white  &  royal  blue.  the  casting  directors  hadn't  overlooked  it,  as  they  invited  him  to  audition.  after  multiple  audition  rounds,  chemistry  reads  and  neverending  meetings  with  his  management,  he  was  offered  the  role. maybe becoming an actor with zero experience would be a gamble, but he felt rather lucky and approached the situation with a healthy (?) dose of confidence. — playing  alex  in  the  adaptation  wasn't  a  decision  he  needed  to  think  twice  about.  he  recognized  a  lot  of  himself  in  alex,  from  being  a  queer  latino  to  his  impulsivity  and  the  tendency  to  let  his  mouth  run.  throughout  the  experience,  the  character  became  as  meaningful  to  him  as  he  was  to  others.  and  he  felt honoured  to  be  their  source  of  representation,  and  inspiration. — the  unexpectedly  positive  response  to  his  acting  debut  opened  more  doors.  only  months  later,  he  was  announced  as  joey  in  the  reboot  of  friends.  but  suddenly  he  was  playing  a  role.  with  less  personal  attachment  and  connection,  and  recognizing  less  of  himself  in  the  character  he  was  playing,  he  was  suddenly  faced  with  just  what  it  really  meant  to  be  an  actor. — the  experience  is  new,  and  at  times  uncomfortable.  he  never  imagined  himself  in  his  current  position,  and  hasn't  ever  felt  as  much  like  a  fish  out  of  the  water  as  right  now.  now  entering  a  territory  where  his  career  is  a  make  or  break,  everything  depends  on  the  next  few  months.  maybe  his  deepest  fears  will  come  true,  being  exposed  as  nothing  but  a  fraud  and  an  e  list  star  forcing  their  way  into  the  spotlight.  maybe  he'll  decide  he  doesn't  care  for  acting  much,  fade  back  into  obscurity  from  the  mainstream.  and  maybe  this  is  what  kickstarts  an  entirely  new  career.

because  i  am  woefully  unprepared  for  this  part  and  santiago  is  a  brand  new  character,  i'll  be  focusing  on  plotting  any  type  of  connections  (positive  or  negative,  and  platonic  or  romantic)  in  direct  messages.  through  brainstorming,  i  will  throw  some  suggestions  at  you  based  on  how  i  think  santiago  would  mesh  with  your  muse(s).  below  there  will  still  be  a  list  of  specific  wanted  connections  i  am  looking  for,  which  i'll  continue  to  update  throughout.  if  this  is  something  you're  interested  in,  please  do  let  me  know  and  i  would  love  to  chat  more  about  it! — roommates: santi  would've  auditioned  for  red,  white  &  royal  blue  when  he  was  still  living  in  the  northeast.  your  muse  would  have  offered  him  a  couch  to  crash  on  during  the  audition  process,  but  it  turned  into  an  unspoken  roommate  agreement. it has been years.  he  is  now  moved  into  the  spare  bedroom,  he  has  his  own  set  of  keys,  is  paying  rent  and  the  two  grew  thick  as  thieves.  — enemies: this  muse  would've  watched  santi  get  handed  everything,  while  they  worked  their  ass  off  all  their  life  to  have  their  career.  maybe  they  feel  threatened,  maybe  they  are  envious,  maybe  they  believe  he  doesn't  deserve  what  he  has.  either  way,  the  two  don't  get  along  at  all.

I want to thank my friend @74paris who contacted the Canarian Authorities and sent him these digitalized photos from the exhibit that Garafia and La Palma had about Maria Montez back in 2012 (more than ten years ago!!)

Maria Montez dad, Isidoro Gracia García was born in Garafia (La Palma) in April 3rd 1873 and by 1904 he settled in Barahona (Dominican Republic) with his brother Joaquín. They left Carany Islands due to economic struggles and they dreamt for a better future, which eventualy came.

These photos show Joaquín (left) and Isidoro (right) pictured in Barahona in 1908. Next we can see Isidoro Gracia pictured in Barahona in 1906. Under these two photos, Isidoro is pictured, again in Barahona, this time in 1909 and the last photo shows Joaquín in an undated photo, but my guessing is that it was taken in Barahona as well aroung the time the other photos were taken (1906-1909).

These photos were displayed in "María Montez, de la Palma a Hollywood" exhibition celebrated in Garafia and La Palma during the celebrations of MAría Montez birthday centenary.

Joaquín Gracia Anadón, who was born in Estercuel (Teruel-Aragón-Spain), in 23rd May 1841 and María Antónia García Martín, who was born in Garafia, (La Palma, Canary Islands) in 28th September 1842 were also remembered in this exhibition.

This beautiful photo taken in 1942 celebrating Doña Justa's birthday was also in the exhibition. Doña Justa Recio Sánchez was María Montez granny and Regla María Teresa Vidal Recio's mother. In this photo we can see at the left Adita with her mother, and at the right we can see Consuelo. In the front row, at the right we can see a very young Teresita. It's beautiful to see that in this exhibition, also the maternal side of María was important although there were no Canarian roots in them (as far as we know).

María Montez most intimal side was also shown in this exhibition, here we can see her pictured in 1943 at her wedding day to Jean-Pierre Aumont.

While Jean-Pierre Aumont was away fighting in II World War and María was at the highest point of her career, she invited her sisters to Hollywood as she wanted them to have a successful career. Although all of them tried, only Teresita (not shown here as she was still very young) succeed but as a High Couture model working in France in the 50s hired exclusively by Vogue magazine.

These photos are from the banners displayed in "María Montez, de la Palma a Hollywood" exhibition held in La Laguna, Tenerife (Canary Islands) in 2012, they show María's family, sisters, daughter Tina and places where her family came from. This house is still standing, now I wonder... could a María Montez museum will be made here and be permanent so everybody could visit it? I vote for it, but I don't know if it will ever me made, it would be beautiful if ever that happen...
