The Taking of Pelham 123
I've already posted a few. Here's a few more.

Gloves and gun go without saying (you must have worked that one out by now). I do love a man in a bow tie, though.

Intimate.

The picture quality could be better but at least the glove and gun are clear. Having difficulty deciding if this is my favourite crime film. Also in the running are, of course, The League of Gentlemen and The Friends of Eddie Coyle. Those are my top 3, anyway. You can shuffle them around as you wish.

Some more out of context quotes from Amy Poehler’s book, because it is dabomb.com:
“The school called us The Handcuff Girls, which will be my band’s name when I become a rockstar in my mid-sixties”.
“He offered to help and pulled ten loose pills out of his pocket before realizing none of them were painkillers”.
“I like to refer to the transition period of any new job as “finding out where the bathrooms are”.
“She put her hand on Maya’s shoulder and in a thick Spanish accent said, “don’t cry, sexy”.
“Horatio was sweet but fearless. He once walked through a sliding glass door on a dare”.
“No more movies about people’s mouths being sewn onto people’s butts”.
“We look out the windows and see the sky and are reminded of how amazing it is to get in a giant steel bird and not have to die on the trail like our forefathers”.
“Recent movies I have cried to include 21 Jump Street, That’s My Boy, The Taking of Pelham 123 and Jackass 2”.
“Jon Bon Jovi went into his own archives and got out the actual outfit he had worn twenty years before during the Slippery When Wet tour; it still fit. Jon Bon keeps it TIGHT”.
“Sometimes I would fantasize about answering the question “how do you do it?” With quick one word answers; ambivalence. Drugs. Robots”.

Random Reviews: The Taking of Pelham One Two Three
Tumblr media
SPEED meets GRUMPY OLD MEN!
Populated with pricks full of personality, PELHAM ONE TWO THREE is the ideal portrait of 1970's New York. Here, the subway system's only slightly more chaotic than it is on a normal day. With all the build up, I may have been expecting an even crazier climax than the one we got, but I like a thriller that has the balls to hinge its plot on the seasonal flu.
Extra credit goes to the continuity department for showing that overturned squad car in a shot when Garber's heading back uptown. They took Pelham 123, then they took our hearts.
P.S. I wish one of the internet's professional deepfake artists would insert Walter Matthau into other action movies. Put his face on DIE HARD's John McClane. On LETHAL WEAPON's Riggs AND Murtaugh. On any Liam Neeson movie (especially LOVE ACTUALLY).
****1/2

It’s time for a new episode of What’s New to Netflix Instant!? and while February may be the shortest month of the year, that didn’t stop Netflix from releasing a whole bevy of new movies and shows coming in February 2023.
Then we watch as John Travolta takes a subway car hostage and it's all up to Denzel Washington to stop him in Tony Scott’s action thriller, The Taking of Pelham 123 from 2009. Next, we witness a grizzly murder that only Christian Bale and Harry Melling, in an excellent performance as Edgar Alan Poe, can solve in The Pale Blue Eye from 2022. And last, we see the true story of a homeless vagrant turned viral celebrity getting convicted of murder in The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker from 2023.
All of this plus movies you shouldn’t take your friends to, singing crocodiles, Floribama, the new You, video games on Netflix, everything you ever wanted to know about golf, shark cages, alien astronauts, attractive teens stuck on an island, and what it's like when all the reality dating shows collide into one hot mess.

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (Joseph Sargent, 1974)
Tumblr media
The Taking of Pelham One Two Three is a 1974 action/thriller flic starring Walter Matthau. The movie opens with four conspicuous-looking passengers boarding a train in New York City. Shortly after they uncouple the other train cars from their car, and take the passengers inside hostage. After fierce negotiations with the police lieutenant (Walter Matthau), the criminals demand 1 million dollars from the city of New York in an hour or they’ll start killing passengers. By the end of the film, three out of the four criminals are killed, leaving only one who escapes. The film, despite being released almost 50 years ago, isn’t dated and keeps you engaged the whole way through. In genre, it’s similar to other movies of the time such as The Warriors, but this film stands out due to its visual direction. The editing is fast-paced, with no shot lasting longer than 15 seconds, adding to the overall ambiance of the film. The performances in the film are well-done too, with each actor having their moment to shine. Although this wasn’t intentional and has only arisen as a byproduct of the film’s age, I also appreciated the film’s setting from the perspective of giving a window into an interesting and bygone era in New York City’s history. Although the film is more entertainment than art, I quite enjoyed it for what it is and recommend it to anyone ages 13 and up who both enjoys movies from that era and enjoys action flics.
