Starlog Magazine (December 1995, Issue #221) Scans
It's been a while since I posted about a scanning project. The most recent magazine I scanned was this Starlog Magazine from December 1995!
Tumblr media
Starlog originally started out as a Star Trek magazine, but evolved to include all things sci-fi, fantasy, and nichely nerdy. I don't think nichely is a word, but hey, this is my blog and I say and do what I want lol.
Here are some scans I like from the magazine! There is also a link to the full magazine at the end of the post if you're interested in seeing the whole thing!
Let's start off with this subscription form for the magazine.
Tumblr media
This takes me back. The thought of filling out a form and mailing it in to purchase a magazine subscription feels so alien now (haha).
I also wanted to point out Robocop, one of my boyfriend's (and my dad's) favs! I actually only recently saw the movie for the first time with my boyfriend, and it was so fun and surprisingly gorey! I wasn't expecting it at all. For some reason I thought the movie was silly and campy? And I mean it was, but the blatant gore and body horror that would come out of nowhere was so shocking to me!
---
Speaking of filling out mail-in forms to make purchases, this magazine is full of them! Mainly they're for merch and memorabilia. Here are a few of my favorites.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This selection doesn't even include all of the things available to buy from the magazine. I think my favorite are the audio cassettes/CDs and the Star Trek face t-shirts. The pin collector in me also admires the page of Star Trek pins.
The signed movie and tv photos page is SO interesting, too. I wonder how they decided the prices for each celebrity? Part of me can't imagine these are real, but if I was a celeb...I certainly would take 1 second to sign a photo if it was being sold for $40 and I got some kickback lol.
If you could have one of the singed photos from a celebrity on that list, who would it be?
I'd have to pick Gary Sinise!
---
There are actually quite a few story articles in this magazine. Each have around a 3-6 page spread full of pictures - they're quite fun to look at! Here are some of my favorite pages from the various articles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really enjoy how they all have drastically different color backgrounds.
The cover article about how Toy Story was created/animated is cool! I picked this page because I love watching how animators work, especially when they use themselves as reference (like in the above pic).
---
Lastly, just a couple of random parts from the magazine that interested me.
One was this article about a fantasy fiction author.
Tumblr media
The article included many different covers of her books. I wish these could've been in color! I've never read older fantasy adventure novels, but these all looked super appealing to me. I'll have to keep an eye out for some of her books while thrifting.
During the scanning process, I spend a lot of time looking at the front and back covers of the books/magazines I'm scanning. I found myself absolutely enthralled with the back cover of this magazine.
Tumblr media
Something about the colors, art, and design just piqued my interest while scanning. I've never heard of this game, much less played it, but I do want to know more about it! I'll probably see if there's a let's play online.
Gosh this is such a cool looking ad for this game. I'm sure the game itself is probably nothing great, but this ad sure is great to look at.
As always, you can view the full magazine for yourself over on my Internet Archive account.
Thanks for stopping by!

Round 1B: Hart of Dixie vs The Tomorrow People
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hart of Dixie: New York doctor Zoe Hart has reached a crossroads in her life when she decides to accept an offer from a stranger to work with him at his practice in Alabama. When she arrives in town, she discovers that the man has died and left her his half of the practice in his will, something that doesn't exactly make her new partner happy. Despite the shock of Southern life and some less-than-hospitable town folk, Zoe decides to give her new life a chance and discovers a new side of herself in the process.
The Tomorrow People: When Stephen Jameson starts hearing voices and teleporting in his sleep, he believes he is going crazy. In desperation, he listens to one of the voices and is led to a group of genetically advanced teens known as the tomorrow people, who are being hunted down by Ultra, a paramilitary group of scientists headed by Dr. Jedikiah Price. Torn by an offer from Price -- having a normal life among people he belongs, but in exchange for helping rid the world of tomorrow people -- Stephen chooses the higher road despite its probable surprises.

HI! I'm obviously one of the 10 people you're referencing ;D Your fic was delightful and beautiful <3 Thank you for sharing it!
I was like, 3 or 4(?) when the Nick series aired/re-ran so I'm more attached to the 2013 CW series but the Nick series is definitely worth the watch. The OT3 is what we deserved in both the Nick and 2013 series :D :D
Tumblr media
^me to you <3
*wibbles* Thank you so much for this message!! I'm deliriously happy that you enjoyed my fic, and DELIGHTED there are at least a few of us out there! :D I'll be honest, the CW show actually passed me by entirely. By the time I knew it ever existed, it had already been off the air for a bit. I need to get around to watching it! (This GIF is a big motivator because I am a sucker for hugs like this.) Thank you thank you thank you, this made my day! <3 <3 <3

I've just seen it announced that Peter Vaughan-Clarke has died, at the age of 66.
Those of you who don't know who that is, who i suspect will be 99.78% of the people reading this, he was an actor best known for being Stephen in The Tomorrow People, not the US reimagining, but the original British early 70's version aimed squarely at kids.
The show was a contemporary show about the spontaneous appearance of the next step of human evolution, with powers emerging at puberty. They were gifted with powers of telepathy (only for communicating with each other, they couldn't read other minds), telekinesis, and teleportation (or "jaunting" as they refer to it), which for anything other than line of sight, required the use of a technological addition, the jaunting belt, a quintessentially 70's design.
There were only a handful of them (Less than a dozen across all the various seasons) and they operated out of a converted disused London Tube station.
At the behest of the Galactic Federation (Earth was not a member, but Tomorrow People appearing suggested it might be, one day) who loaned them some tech (including TIM, their self aware computer) they sought to help protect Earth from external threats, and more importantly, help other Tomorrow People as they emerged because the "Breaking Out" process was potentially very dangerous, as their mind had to cope with adjusting to telepathy (it was implied you might go insane if it didn't progress properly and develop mental shields) and teleportation (some people simply vanished and were lost forever in hyperspace). Tomorrow People were also genetically hardwired to be non-violent.
It had a budget that made Doctor Who look generous, and some of the performances were… not good (producer Roger Price deliberately cast untested actors for most parts, which worked in some cases, but not others). He was also committed to having non-white actors in lead rolds (Which for the early 70's wasn't remotely guaranteed). There's a fun article about some of that here. and another here
Stephen was the audience identification character in the first season. He was the average, everyday kid who "broke out" and was introduced to the weird world of the Tomorrow People.
He's a case where they got VERY lucky with casting. PVC (as he was affectionately known) ensured Steven was a delightful character.
He was funny, snarky, brave, eager, but not foolishly so, and still getting used to his new world. He still had to go to school because he was an otherwise ordinary kid, but would still jaunt to go swimming in the Carribean after school, because who wouldn't? He was the sort of guy you'd WANT to be friends with at school, even if he wasn't a Tomorrow Person.
And even very little icon-uk (I wasn't even upper case in those days) could see that he was a good looking kid, even if I was more interested in how cool telekinesis was as a power, and more importantly, how I could get hold of a jaunting belt)

That last one is a space suit... the 70s were weird for fashions, but not THAT weird.
David Bowie met him when the show was filming and mentioned later that he was "a pretty little thing", and I know from talking to people that he was the catalyst for more than one young lad realising that they might be more interested in other lads than girls.
After the show, his TV career petered out, bur he still did various stage work, acting, lighting tech and the like. He remained in touch with the fandom, appearing at conventions, and when the DVD's came out, he and co-star Nicholas Young did a series of outrageously good commentary tracks, simultaneously fond reminiscing, utter piss-take, giggling at the props and effects and pondering why a couple of the directors insisted on dressing some of the attractive young male actors in as little as possible. (Nothing untoward or disturbing appears to have happened to the cast, I hasten to add, but that director's predelictions do raise an eyebrow)

The Tomorrow People is a one-season CW show with a stupid name that aired ten years ago, but I still have feelings about it, and one of them is that Roger sucks. So, if you’ve seen this mediocre show from 2013, and agree that Roger sucks hit me up.
