Drew Brees' grandfather, Ray Akins, dies Tuesday in Texas
Longtime Texas high school football coach Ray Akins, the grandfather and mentor of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, died Tuesday in Texas, according to media reports in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Akins, who was one of the winningest coaches in Texas high school football history with 293 career wins, died at 7:25 a.m. on Tuesday, according to Gregory-Portland Independent School District officials. He was 92.
"We were deeply saddened to hear that the Gregory-Portland community lost a legend this morning when former G-PISD Athletic Director and Football Coach Ray Akins passed away," GPISD Superintendent  Dr. Paul Clore said in a statement. "We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, and to thousands of G-P alumni. While he will be greatly missed, we remember Coach Akins as the influential leader he was and will carry on with the standard of excellence that lives on in every G-P Wildcat. The mention of his name is like a banner of pride for so many former students, and will continue to grace our football stadium for years to come. Tonight, we will leave the lights on at Ray Akins Wildcat Stadium from dusk until dawn to honor his lasting legacy."
Of all the influences in Brees' life, Akins might have had the most profound impact on and off the field, especially during the formative years.
"Just growing up and being around (football) with him, the values he instilled in me and the discipline," Brees said in a 2012 interview about his grandfather. "Some of my best memories as a kid are with him and my grandmother."
Akins was a World War II veteran and member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. His coaching career spanned 37 years at Lometa, Goldthwaite, Tomball, Tidehaven, Freer and Gregory-Portland high schools. His career mark of 293-102-15, which included a 208-51-7 record in 23 years at Gregory-Portland, ranks among the best in Texas high school football history.
Akins led Gregory-Portland to a state-record 12 consecutive district titles and a trip to the state finals in 1971.
The football stadium at Gregory-Portland High School was named in his honor in 2009. The stadium lights were left on at Ray Akins Wildcat Stadium throughout the day on Tuesday to honor Akins' legacy.
Before becoming a football legend, Akins served in the 1st Marine Division in World War II and fought in the bloody invasion of Okinawa in 1945. His service is one of the reasons Brees serves on the board of directors at the National World War II Museum and has become a regular participant in the NFL's annual USO tours.
NFLFanpoint: Thoughts and prayers are with you Drew! You were blessed to have had this man in your life.

CYPRESS — Although the Cy Woods Wildcats clenched a playoff berth Saturday, it was Cy Lakes’s high scoring basketball football game that caught attention around the state as the Spartans fell to Tomball Memorial, 73-70.
During Cy Ranch’s off week, Cy Woods more than doubled Cy Springs’ scoring, 31-15, to guarantee the Wildcats a place in the Texas high school football playoffs that begin in four weeks.
Cy Park defeated Bryan, 34-24 to move up to 2-3 in league play — only one game behind Cy Lakes.
CFISD’s Bridgeland High School skunked Langham Creek, 29-0, in Week 8 action.
Scheduled to play in Week 9 are:
Friday night, all games at 7 p.m.
Cy Springs at Bryan
Cy Lakes vs. Langham Creek
Cy Park at Tomball Memorial
Saturday, 1 p.m. kickoff
Cy Ranch vs. Cy Woods
The Bears have their bye game this week.

A win this Saturday by the #MWT Mustangs over Cy Woods has the potential to throw a monkey wrench into the District 14-6A championship. Combined with a Tomball Memorial victory, there would be a potential three-way tie at 5-1.
Given that a Cy Ranch victory would put leverage in the Mustangs’ favor, a potential Week 11 rematch for the 14-6A title would once again be between the Mustangs and Tomball Memorial.
Shop for Cypress football action photos here (links to Live Wild Photography).
However, a Cy Woods victory would cut short the rest of the district oppositions’ hopes for a shot at the title, as the Wildcats are off the following week and then finish the regular season against the currently 1-6 Bryan Vikings.

An emotional moment at tonight’s game as officers from the Harris County Sheriff’s Department, officers from our CFISD Police Department and other first responders pay tribute to their fallen brother, Deputy Sheriff Sandeep Dhaliwal. pic.twitter.com/DrIaVdZ6zR
— Cy Springs Band (@CySpringsBand) September 28, 2019
CYPRESS — The Cypress area was rocked by the murder of Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal Friday afternoon, near Highway 6 and West Road. On top of the many vigils that have sprung up in the Cypress community, tributes were made during our Texas high school football games for Dhaliwal, and recognition of our first responders were also made.
The funeral ceremony for the deputy is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 2 at the Berry Center. Sikh religious ceremony at 10:30 a.m., law enforcement ceremony at 11:30. Public welcome at both, space permitting, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Following last week’s 20-7 stomping of the once unbeaten Bears from Bridgeland High School, the District 14-6A leader is Cy Woods’ Wildcats team. The result means that no league team will be able to finish the season with a perfect 10-0 record. So far, only the Bears and Tomball Memorial have one loss apiece.
Cy Woods (3-2 overall) leads the district with a 3-0 league record, which created another three-way tie, albeit for second place.
Tied up at 2-1 are the Bears, Cy Lakes and Cy Ranch. Regarding tie-breakers, the Bears are over the Mustangs, but the Mustangs are over Cy Lakes’ Spartans. The Bears don’t meet Cy Lakes until Week 10’s Thursday night Halloween game at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium.

With Cy Woods, the Bears, Cy Ranch and Cy Lakes holding the four playoff spots, the remaining five teams of the district have only three league wins spread amongst them.
Cy Park earned its first varsity win over Cy Springs, 24-10, last Saturday night. Langham Creek edged Bryan, 35-31.
The Mustangs had a glorious come from behind victory over Cy Lake, 34-31, Thursday evening. Cy Lakes had a solid first half performance, but Cy Ranch scored 21 unanswered points in the second half, to snatch the victory.

CYPRESS — The Bridgeland High School football team escaped the fourth week of the Texas high school football season with a shocking 48-14 victory over last year’s District 14-6A champion, Cy Ranch, at the Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union Stadium Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019. The game left the Bears as the only 14-6A team with an unbeaten overall season record.

However, the Bears’ victory only ties them with Cy Lakes’ Spartans and Cy Woods’ Wildcats in league action, at 2-0 apiece.
The Spartans overcame Cy Springs’ Panthers, 21-7, and the Wildcats defeated Langham Creek, 31-14.
Editor’s note: All references to “Bridgeland” are specifically to CFISD’s 12th high school.
The remaining district battle was Tomball Memorial shutting out Bryan, 40-0. Cy Park had it’s bye game in Week 4.
Overall season standings within District 14-6A have CFISD’s newest Bear team at 4-0; followed by Cy Lakes and Tomball Memorial at 3-1. Cy Ranch and Cy Woods are both at 2-2, with Bryan’s Vikings at 1-2. There are currently three teams with goose eggs in the win column: Cy Park at 0-3, Cy Springs and Langham Creek are both at 0-4.
Week 5 will see a meaty round of matchups as Cy Lakes battles the #MWT Mustangs, as Cy Ranch looks to get back on the winning path and get leverage over the Spartans on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union Stadium.
The Bears battle Cy Woods in what could be a key game in the 2019 campaign for the district championship Friday at 7 p.m. at Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union Stadium.
The Lobos visit Bryan Friday, also at 7 p.m.
Saturday’s lone scheduled game will force a winner as Cy Park and Cy Springs battle at 6 p.m. at Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union Stadium.

Over the past two years, Cypress Creek EMS has trained more…

Norm Uhl – CCEMS Public Information Officer
Just before Tomball ISD resumed the 2018-19 school year after the winter break, CCEMS Tactical Medics trained 524 Tomball employees how to Stop The Bleed. We had already trained 160 last year including all of the school nurses, bringing the grand total to 684. Our thanks to the school nurses who provided valuable one on one assistance during tourniquet practice.
The district is getting ready to deploy Bleeding Control Kits with tourniquets across the district and the leadership wanted to make sure employees know how to use them in case of emergency.
On January 7, CCEMS trained 180 employees at Tomball High School in the morning and 208 employees at Tomball Memorial High School in the afternoon.
CCEMS returned to Tomball ISD on January 8, to train all of the district’s bus drivers. Tomball is the first district to do that in the CCEMS area. We applaud the district’s commitment to student and employee safety.
Even though this training came from tragedy due to school shootings and other mass casualty incidents, a school district employee is far more likely to use a tourniquet for an accidental injury such as from a fall or an auto-pedestrian accident. A person with a serious hemorrhage can bleed out and die in as little as three minutes no matter what caused the bleeding. Time is critical and lives are being save when someone on an accident scene knows what to do until EMS arrives.
