2023 SEMA SHOW CREATES CONNECTIONS THAT DRIVE FUTURE SUCCESS FOR THE AFTERMARKET INDUSTRY DIAMOND BAR, Calif. (Nov. 17, 2023) – The SEMA Show returned to Las Vegas Oct. 31-Nov. 3, bringing together more than 150,000 automotive aftermarket industry professionals looking to transform four days of relationship-building, networking, sales and marketing into business success and dreams realized.   The proof that the SEMA Show was poised to return to historic levels was found in the packed Las Vegas Convention Center exhibit halls, teeming with more than 2,200 exhibitors, boundary-pushing builds, innovative new products, thought-provoking educational opportunities and more than 150,000 attendees connecting throughout the aftermarket community. The Show creates connections via dedicated product communities, outdoor activations, education and training, award programs, reveals, unique experiences and celebrations.   “The SEMA Show is one of the largest trade shows in the country, but it’s actually comprised of several smaller, distinct communities,” said Tom Gattuso, SEMA VP of Events. “The networking that takes place within those groups is where you see the transformative power the Show has to positively impact participants and chart the course of the aftermarket industry.”   Perhaps nowhere else is that transformative power felt more strongly than amongst the companies exhibiting at the Show for the first time. More than 20 percent of the exhibitors were new participants, driving innovation, including Caross USA, manufacturers of portable jump starters and air compressors, based in San Mateo, Calif. The start-up has had products on sale for a mere three months and SEMA was its first trade show. Not only did they meet prospective partners from Canada to Australia, but their networking also gained them exposure via social media and led to a relationship with the television show “Two Guys Garage” and a potential on-air appearance in February. They also won two Global Media Awards (GMA), given by judges comprised of members of the international media to products they feel will be well-received in their respective countries.   “You don’t see a lot of ‘tire kickers’ at SEMA, the buyers are much more serious,” said Global Sales Director Steve Stambaugh. “I can’t say enough about SEMA. Being at this Show has done more for our company in two days than other industries do in 10 years.”   For returning exhibitors, the SEMA Show was an opportunity to continue building on the year-over-year growth that participation creates. For CIC Powerbox of Pittsburg, Kan., a manufacturer of AC-powered truck boxes that first exhibited at the Show in 2018, their participation has led to several partnerships.   “Every time we come to SEMA we come away with new business,” said CEO Mike Windsor, listing the Department of Transportation, the United States Air Force, Goodyear, and several OEMs as just a few of the relationships forged at the SEMA Show. “We’ve also made connections for opportunities we either weren’t aware of or didn’t know how to get into,” he added, including sponsorship of professional drift racer Faruk Kugay and growth of CIC’s social media marketing as examples. “We’ve had exponential growth year over year and if all goes well, this year we’ll go international thanks to the relationships we’ve made at SEMA,” said Windsor.   The Show remains a popular place for OEMs to connect with the aftermarket industry. For Toyota, 2023 was a year to push boundaries. “Toyota has always seen SEMA as a place to let our imagination run wild. This past show was no exception, as we tapped into thrills on the track ... and the trail,” said Mike Tripp, Group Vice President, Toyota Marketing. “The amount of interest in the all-new 2024 Tacoma and Land Cruiser didn't disappoint. And based on the coverage we've received, it's safe to say that builds like our X-Runner Concept and FJ Bruiser were true stars of the show.”   For Ford Performance Parts & Accessories, the Show allows them to forge relationships with attendees and share the benefits of their products. “The SEMA Show gives us the opportunity to showcase the knowledge of our representatives, talk engineering and support our product with assurances that all accessories are fully reviewed for safety, ergonomics, and longevity,” said Natalie Simon, Marketing & Events Manager, Ford Performance Parts & Accessories.      For others, Show participation is a step towards achieving the dream of a career in the automotive aftermarket. Masen Schneider, a freshman studying mechanical engineering at the University of North Dakota, received a SEMA Scholarship, awarded annually to students interested in careers in the automotive industry. “It means a lot to receive a scholarship from an organization like SEMA because as big and impactful as they are, they see your story and experience and want to help propel you towards your dream,” he said. Schneider hopes to one day be an automotive parts designer.   The SEMA Show also remains a center of innovation fueled by passion, as evidenced by the Battle of the Builders Presented by Mothers Polish competition. Let's quickly get the timeline set. In 2021, the Toyota Compact Cruiser surprises everyone as part of the automaker's preview of battery-electric future vehicle concepts. In December 2022, the 17-year-old gas-powered FJ Cruiser that exited the U.S. market in 2014 ends production in Japan. In the middle of August, Toyota Japan applies to trademark the name "Land Hopper" in Japan. Two days later, during Toyota's introduction of the reborn Land Cruiser, one of the images contains the silhouette of something that could easily be mistaken for a slightly tweaked Compact Cruiser. This brings us to September and two reports out of Japan from Best Car and Mag X, via Australia's Drive, that say the downsized Land Cruiser is coming to production as soon as next year. Let's just call it the Land Hopper as a placeholder name for now. The Japanese reports say it's not going to be electric only, that it will offer shoppers some combination of gas and diesel engines, maybe a hybrid powertrain, and potentially, further down the line, an all-electric variant that closes the loop with the 2021 Compact Cruiser concept. The engine switch-up is said to be due to the platform, Toyota reportedly putting the Land Hopper on a shortened version of the GA-F body-on-frame chassis that supports the 300- and 250-Series Toyota Land Cruisers, the Sequoia SUV, the Tundra and Tacoma pickups, and the new Lexus GX. For now, the ladder frame chassis would impose too many compromises on an all-electric powertrain.  The internal combustion engines reportedly in play are a turbocharged 1.5-liter hybrid, the 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engines from the global Corolla Cross powertrain menu, the 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid from the RAV4, the turbocharged 2.8-liter diesel from the HiLux pickup, and a naturally aspirated 2.7-liter four-cylinder gas engine said to be in development. As for an electric trim, Mag X wrote, "Apparently the priority is to make the [electric drivetrain] viable in the Tacoma pick up for North America, and after completion, the unit will be modified and used" in the Land Hopper. Dimensions are thought to be 171.3 inches long, 73 inches wide, and 74 inches tall. That footprint would make the Land Hopper five inches shorter than the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross, two inches wider, and 10 inches taller. Compared to a 4Runner, those dimensions are about 20 inches shorter and two inches narrower, but three inches taller. Some of that length includes a spare tire carrier hung from the rear hatch, like the silhouetted vehicle from the Land Cruiser presentation.  It's possible Toyota will put another evolution of the Land Hopper on display at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show that opens at the end of October. If so, then we'll find out more about the vehicle Toyota is said to internally refer to as a "[Suzuki] Jimny killer."

I would marry nature if I could

So basically my entire life has been all about the outdoors and it has been a main focus for me in my life choices. It has always been a place of comfort for me and there is a reason I have chosen to go to school for a program that is very nature and environmentally oriented. Ever since I was a kid I was always outside playing in the forest that was just over the fence in my backyard and it was where I had my most fun. As I’ve gotten older, I have had countless life altering experiences related to nature.

When I was about 8 years old I started going to summer camp and I went on many canoe and hiking trips that really got me serious about loving everything nature has to offer. My family had a cottage up on a lake just North of Peterborough and I spent many of my weekends there exploring and just being one with the trees. This past summer I went treeplanting and I do have to say that was probably one of the most extreme nature experiences I’ve ever had. I was located about 6 hours North of Thunder Bay and when I say I was in the middle of nowhere, I mean that in the most literal sense. There was not a cell tower within several kilometres of where we were and we were honestly living among the trees. I got to see and do so many things that I otherwise wouldn’t have ever been able to and I am very lucky to have experienced that because it has really shaped myself and my whole outlook on life.

I have very few set in stone goals for my life because I like to live very in the moment and take things as they come but I do have a few that I will share. Firstly, I am going to school for Environmental Management and I plan on using my degree in some sort of way to help people become more sustainable resulting in a better world to live in and to also bring back nature to its fullest potential and to what it was before humans came and messed everything up. Another aspiration I have is to work as a forest firefighter. While treeplanting, I got to experience first hand the damage that forest fires do to the environment and I actually was surrounded by several very large fires. Fires so big that I was almost unable to breathe due to all the smoke. I found this very disturbing and although I know fires are a natural part of life, I would like to do whatever I can to protect forests and the nature that we all find so wonderful. A third life path that I have been teasing myself with doing is literally converting my 2009 Toyota FJ Cruiser into a camper truck, literally start driving and just live out in the bush. I would plan to visit national parks and just live in nature because I feel that would probably be the life in which I am most happy. Unfortunately that is not necessarily the most practical option for me but I would love to be able to do that someday.

So yeah that pretty much sums up why in the title I say I would marry nature if I had the chance. It has always been such a big part of my life and honestly I don’t think I would be able to live without it. It brings me joy and helps me through some of the tougher times in my life.

The Most Fun You Can Have For Under $5,000; Why the Mitsubishi Montero is the most underrated overlander.

Finally, 2020 is coming to an end. I think I can speak on behalf of everyone when I say it was a year we are all glad to put behind us. However, there is one silver lining that came out of this year. It’s that it gave us an opportunity to break out of our normal routines. Like working a 9 to 5 and then going home to binge watch your favorite TV show. Some of us got laid off, others furloughed from work, creating an uncertain future. When our backs are against the wall, it forces us to make a choice. Do we operate with a scarcity mindset, or an abundant one? Meaning, do we choose to live in a world fearful of scarce resources? Or in contrary, choose a mindset of abundance, where even when the chips are down, we feel secure that there is plenty for everyone; everything except toilet paper of course. One thing that is certain in the U.S, is that there is plenty to explore. While most of the world was locked up indoors with no place to go, Americans somehow always find creative ways to seek adventure. This year may have forced us to social distance, and we could have chose to stay cooped up in our homes. Instead, a lot of us decided to hit the trails.

Overlanding has boomed over the last year and as a result 4x4 Sport Utility Vehicles have jumped in prices. Auction sites have seen increased sale prices for capable off road SUV’s. Vehicles such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, FJ Cruiser, Jeep Wagoneer and early Ford Bronco’s all have reached unattainable prices. So what’s left at an entry level price for the overlanding enthusiast looking to begin their newly acquired hobby? Well there’s a few affordable options; but none that combine reliability, practicality and capability as the Mitsubishi Montero. Also known as the Pajero in most parts of the world, the 4x4 Mitsubishi has everything you want in an overlander. It has an active-trac gear selector to manage the transfer case. You can quickly equip yourself with off road capability by switching to four wheel drive on the fly. The Limited trim model comes with a limited slip differential along with four driving options. You can select 2H to send power just to the rear wheels. There’s 4H for all wheel drive, typically used for more traction on normal pavement when roads become slick. Then most importantly there is 4H and 4L with locking center differential. When the center differential is locked it allows power to be sent to each axle equally. So your tires can rotate simultaneously for maximum traction. Yes I know, most hardcore off roaders prefer a solid rear axle with a locking rear differential and a body on frame chassis. However this 3rd generation Montero featured in this article opted more for comfort along with its off-road prowess. Its monocoque, unibody frame paired with its independent four wheel suspension gives the car an extremely comfortable ride even over the toughest terrain. Sure, there are some great affordable 4x4 options out there besides the Montero. There is the Isuzu Trooper, XJ Jeep Cherokee, Ford Ranger, Nissan Pathfinder and Xterra. Heck, there’s even a Montero Sport that is certainly an affordable alternative to the Toyota 4Runner. These models usually all tend to make the most affordable 4x4 list. However the Montero encompasses everything you want in an overlander. So what exactly is an overlander you ask? Think of it as a capable vehicle that has no problems driving over rugged landscape while maintaining a comfortable ride over normal pavement. Not only is it fun but overlanding provides us with a sense of freedom by allowing us to escape into the wilderness.

In my neck of the woods of Southern California, there are plenty of trails to explore. I recently took my 2002 Mitsubishi Montero to Otay Truck Trail, here in San Diego. I wanted to test the Montero’s off roading potential with a few buddies of mine who brought their Jeep Wranglers. Neither of them were sold on the Montero because they had limited knowledge of what it was. After we hit a few trails I quickly changed their impression of the Montero. It simply chewed up everything in its path. Even in 2WD the Montero was quick and maintained its traction over the uneven terrain. Half the time I found myself having to wait up for them as I left the Jeeps in my dust.

The Montero is largely unknown in the United States because it has been discontinued here since 2006. The SUV featured in this article was one of four generations offered to the American people. The Montero was never considered a failure, it just lost its luster in the mid 2000’s when Mitsubishi began struggling with sales. The Montero also has rally racing victories under its belt. Enthusiasts who know it as the Pajero, recognize the SUV as a twelve time world champion at the Paris-Dakar Rally. The Pajero has the record for the most Dakar victories including a stretch of seven in a row from 2001 to 2007. Its victory run spans over three decades with its first championship coming in 1985. Mitsubishi even created a road legal version during its 2nd generation (1997-1999) called the Pajero Evolution. This vehicle was produced in order to homologate the Pajero for entry into the Dakar Rally’s T2 group, where it dominated its class. Unfortunately, it never made it to the U.S, but good news, its approaching 25 years old. Which means it can soon be legally imported to the States. So with its racing background, championship pedigree and well known capability, why is the Montero so unknown? Well I think it’s simple. As I mentioned before it’s been 14 years since the Montero left the United States. That’s an entire generation of car enthusiasts who have never heard of the this world rally champion.

Montero’s can be found in decent shape for under $5,000 in the States. That’s a bargain when you consider what features you get for that price. The Limited trim comes standard with leather, dual power seats, and an enormous sunroof. Not to mention a digital compass for when you get lost on the trails. An Infinity premium sound system, full size spare, and of course an incredible four wheel drive system. Even the lower priced XLS trim comes with a standard two speed transfer case sporting both 2H and 4H capability.

As a full size SUV with a stow away third row, the Montero can be compared to the Toyota Land Cruiser of its time. With similar capability at a fraction of the cost, the word bargain becomes an understatement. The 3rd generation Montero was redesigned in 2001 to be more of a highway cruiser that can comfortably seat seven. With that being said Mitsubishi still managed to maintain the Montero‘s rugged, brawny, boxy shape. This Montero pays its respects to the generations that came before it. While also allowing you to go from the grocery store one minute, to where pavement is optional the next.

Now that 2021 is here, Mitsubishi has decided to completely discontinue the Montero. Along with the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Montero will no longer be sold in other parts of the world. Mitsubishi Pajero’s as they call it, have largely remained the same since the 2006 redesign, when they left the U.S. In an ever changing auto industry, Mitsubishi decided to shift their focus to the growing crossover SUV market. So what’s left to be said about the underrated Mitsubishi Montero? It is arguably the most well rounded overlander. It’s designed to be a daily driver, it’s comfortable and has great visibility; perfect for taking a family of seven to the great outdoors. Or you can be like me, a single male who uses it to tear up trails in Southern California. Whichever way you use it, its versatility is a relic of a dying breed of SUV’s. Overlanding gives us the freedom to overcome boundaries. It provides us with a path to escape, both physically and mentally. It allows us to become one with nature and also happens to be a great way to socially distance. Thanks to Covid-19 for opening up my mind to a new hobby. Through everything we endured this past year, remember there is always a silver lining. Mine just happened to be my Mitsubishi Montero.

What to expect at the Tokyo Motor Show

As you know, there’s always a hype that comes along with the automotive world. Many can’t wait to see what the latest innovations are for upcoming vehicles—especially at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Toyota TJ Cruiser

This new Toyota is part SUV and part minivan, and a descendant of the much loved Toyota FJ Cruiser. Rumor has it that it’ll go into production after it makes its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show and maybe even make its way to the U.S.

A Redesigned Toyota 86

A new Toyota “performance trio” has been in the works with the Orlando Toyota Supra and the Toyota 86 being the first two members of the club. But before introducing the third member, they’re working on amping up the current 86 with possibly new engineering upgrades.

The Toyota FT-4X

This is a crossover that has four doors AND four-wheel drive. It has a high degree of adaptability and off-road-friendly features. It also has impressive add ons like a “wet zone” where you can store muddy boots and damp wetsuits, and a multi-hatch that opens in two different directions. We can’t wait to see this concept on our Orlando Toyota lot.

2023 SEMA SHOW CREATES CONNECTIONS THAT DRIVE FUTURE SUCCESS FOR THE AFTERMARKET INDUSTRY

(Nov. 17, 2023) – The SEMA Show returned to Las Vegas Oct. 31-Nov. 3, bringing together more than 150,000 automotive aftermarket industry professionals looking to transform four days of relationship-building, networking, sales and marketing into business success and dreams realized.   The proof that the SEMA Show was poised to return to historic levels was found in the packed Las Vegas Convention Center exhibit halls, teeming with more than 2,200 exhibitors, boundary-pushing builds, innovative new products, thought-provoking educational opportunities and more than 150,000 attendees connecting throughout the aftermarket community. The Show creates connections via dedicated product communities, outdoor activations, education and training, award programs, reveals, unique experiences and celebrations.   “The SEMA Show is one of the largest trade shows in the country, but it’s actually comprised of several smaller, distinct communities,” said Tom Gattuso, SEMA VP of Events. “The networking that takes place within those groups is where you see the transformative power the Show has to positively impact participants and chart the course of the aftermarket industry.”   Perhaps nowhere else is that transformative power felt more strongly than amongst the companies exhibiting at the Show for the first time. More than 20 percent of the exhibitors were new participants, driving innovation, including Caross USA, manufacturers of portable jump starters and air compressors, based in San Mateo, Calif. The start-up has had products on sale for a mere three months and SEMA was its first trade show. Not only did they meet prospective partners from Canada to Australia, but their networking also gained them exposure via social media and led to a relationship with the television show “Two Guys Garage” and a potential on-air appearance in February. They also won two Global Media Awards (GMA), given by judges comprised of members of the international media to products they feel will be well-received in their respective countries.   “You don’t see a lot of ‘tire kickers’ at SEMA, the buyers are much more serious,” said Global Sales Director Steve Stambaugh. “I can’t say enough about SEMA. Being at this Show has done more for our company in two days than other industries do in 10 years.”   For returning exhibitors, the SEMA Show was an opportunity to continue building on the year-over-year growth that participation creates. For CIC Powerbox of Pittsburg, Kan., a manufacturer of AC-powered truck boxes that first exhibited at the Show in 2018, their participation has led to several partnerships.   “Every time we come to SEMA we come away with new business,” said CEO Mike Windsor, listing the Department of Transportation, the United States Air Force, Goodyear, and several OEMs as just a few of the relationships forged at the SEMA Show. “We’ve also made connections for opportunities we either weren’t aware of or didn’t know how to get into,” he added, including sponsorship of professional drift racer Faruk Kugay and growth of CIC’s social media marketing as examples. “We’ve had exponential growth year over year and if all goes well, this year we’ll go international thanks to the relationships we’ve made at SEMA,” said Windsor.   The Show remains a popular place for OEMs to connect with the aftermarket industry. For Toyota, 2023 was a year to push boundaries. “Toyota has always seen SEMA as a place to let our imagination run wild. This past show was no exception, as we tapped into thrills on the track ... and the trail,” said Mike Tripp, Group Vice President, Toyota Marketing. “The amount of interest in the all-new 2024 Tacoma and Land Cruiser didn't disappoint. And based on the coverage we've received, it's safe to say that builds like our X-Runner Concept and FJ Bruiser were true stars of the show.”   For Ford Performance Parts & Accessories, the Show allows them to forge relationships with attendees and share the benefits of their products. “The SEMA Show gives us the opportunity to showcase the knowledge of our representatives, talk engineering and support our product with assurances that all accessories are fully reviewed for safety, ergonomics, and longevity,” said Natalie Simon, Marketing & Events Manager, Ford Performance Parts & Accessories.      For others, Show participation is a step towards achieving the dream of a career in the automotive aftermarket. Masen Schneider, a freshman studying mechanical engineering at the University of North Dakota, received a SEMA Scholarship, awarded annually to students interested in careers in the automotive industry. “It means a lot to receive a scholarship from an organization like SEMA because as big and impactful as they are, they see your story and experience and want to help propel you towards your dream,” he said. Schneider hopes to one day be an automotive parts designer.   The SEMA Show also remains a center of innovation fueled by passion, as evidenced by the Battle of the Builders Presented by Mothers Polish competition. The aftermarket industry's ultimate vehicle competition, the program celebrated 10 years of providing builders the ultimate platform to showcase their craftsmanship and skills to a worldwide audience. For Andy Leach, winning builder of the 1960 Buick Invicta Custom, the victory was the culmination of nine years of work. “It’s a dream come true,” said Leach. “I've been chasing this award for nearly a decade.
