Hi, same anon from the mxfruit ask :) im sorry if im bothering you too much, but you mentioned there are other darker skinned or afroasians influencers/artists…would you mind telling me which ones do you follow/are your favorites? Would love to give them support as well :)
It's not a bother AT ALL!!! I appreciate you wanting to show support... it means a lot ❤️❤️❤️
I'm going to start off with the KING (not literally hehe) Morris K. If you are a fan of Thai BL, then you'll probably recognize him from Triage... and if you haven't seen Triage then I highly recommend you do!!! But... he has quite the acting career under his belt. He's been very open about his struggles being half-black, and how his being the first black celebrity in Thailand was a difficult journey. He's a huge advocate for more opportunities for Thai-black people in show business. He literally paved the way and I have great respect for him.
Tsunari. She is half-Thai and half-Trinidadian. If you're a fan of rap or hip hop, then I highly recommend her music. She often mixes in some english with her thai lyrics... and she's done a few covers of western artists. Give her a listen on youtube!!!
badmixy. She is an openly trans and proud Thai singer. She writes her own music and her lyrics have occasionally brought me to tears. Again, give her a listen over on youtube.
Rusameekae Fagerlund. He is an openly queer Senegalese-Thai actor, model, and mc. He's done several interviews to raise awareness about homophobia and racism in Thailand. He was named Scene Stealer of the Year in 2016 for his role in เพื่อนรัก เพื่อนร้าย (Best Friends, Bad Friends). He was a host on "Dress My Love" which is available on youtube (I don't think it's subbed though) which was a fun program where they would talk about fashion and have couples on as guests where one would style the other according to a certain theme.
Nam Patcharaporn and Maeya Nonthawan. Both are beauty pageant winners who faced criticism and unnecessary backlash for their darker skin.
Suzie Natthawadee. She is a social media influencer and vlogger that gained popularity when she spoke up about the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States and how Thailand should reflect on their own ideas about race and skin color. You can follow her on ig and tiktok @ suziewadee.
Esther Oruche. I might have spoken about her before hehe. She's fairly new to the scene, but I'm very much looking forward to her future projects... have I mentioned The Last Case enough??? I don't think so.... Please support her and her series!!!

Meet my Immortal Desires MC!
Tumblr media
Mary Lawrence
-Choices Book: Immortal Desires
-Love Interests: Cas Harlow / Gabe Adalhard
~~~
Basic Info:
-Full Name: Mary Antoinette Lawrence
-Gender: Female (She/Her)
-Age: 19
-Height: 5"8'
-Species: Vampire(?)
-Birthday: May 5th 1999 (A Taurus ♉️)
-Sexuality: "I like pretty people?"
-Personality type: "I think I'm a cinnamon roll." (She's not)
-Ethnicity: Afro-Haitian and Afro-Trinidadian
-Family: Terri Lawrence (mother)
Unknown father (for now)
Dinah DuBois (grandmother)
Thomas Lawrence (grandfather)
Personality:
Mary is confident and self-assured. She doesn't take ish from anybody so if you try her, she will snap you back in place. Even when the vampires are constantly after her and her mother, Mary never backed down. She also has a sensitive, caring and compassionate side, only showing that side to her loved ones. Mary would fight for her loved ones and has no problem showing her loyalty to them.
Some Facts:
-She was born in New Orleans, to her mother Terri who was of Trinidadian and Haitian descent. Her grandmother Dinah was Haitian while her grandfather was Trinidadian. She is autistic.
-She did pageants as a child, with her grandmother as her coach. She did this until she was 15. She decided to quit and just focus on modeling.
-Before moving to Crimson Beech, she did some modeling for teen magazines back in New Orleans. She took a hiatus from modeling to finish high school.
-She spent most of her childhood with her grandparents because her mother was busy getting her medical degree. That's why Terri is often all up in Mary's business all the time - make up for her absence.
-She wasn't too happy with moving to Crimson Beech as she didn't want to live so far away from her grandparents. The vampire situation made it all the more infuriating.
-She was the 'queen bee' back in her old high school. She wasn't mean unless you tried her.
-She still calls her grandparents often, to make sure they're okay.
-Her favorite animal is the black widow spider 🕷
Relationships:
Her grandparents: She is very close to them both.
Her mother Terri:
She and her mother have their ups and downs and Mary feels trapped as her mother wants her to stay a child. Because Terri was building up her career for most of Mary's younger years, there is a disconnect between them as Terri is trying to play catch up. But Mary is an adult now so Terri has to accept that. Despite that, the mother-daughter duo love each other to bits and would fight and kill for one another.
Gabe Adalhard:
Gabriel is one of Mary's love interests.
At the beginning, Gabriel has an obvious crush on Mary. Mary didn't necessarily return that crush at that time (as she was aware of Libby's crush on him) but is flattered. She is attracted to him still and doesn't reject his advances.
She is sympathetic to his trauma with his family's deaths and would comfort him when he got sad.
She was shocked and hurt that he lied to her about being human and didn't talk to him for a bit. After spending time with his vampire friends, the two make up.
Cas Harlow:
Cas is Mary's second love interest.
She and Cas got off at the wrong foot as Cas tried to kill her when she first moved to Crimson Beech. Since then, Mary has never liked him for the first part of the story, making snarky remarks at him and him matching her sass. It's until Cas saved her from a feral Gabriel is when she starts to warm up. Him as well.
She doesn't know what to think of Cas most of the time as he looks down on humans. But after being on the run from the covens, she does see his tender side.
Seth:
Seth is one of the Venandis and Cas' mentee. Mary has a soft spot for Seth and thinks of him as a younger brother. She and her mother Terri have pretty much adopted him at this point. Seth is the only Venandi vampire Mary is close to, besides Cas. With Val, Margo and Scott, Mary is merely acquainted with them as she dislikes them for being rude to her, for trying to kill her several times and for accusing Cas of being traitor back in Book 1.
Nicole:
Nicole is Mary's vampire homegirl and confidant. After being turned, Mary grows close to Nicole.
(That's all I can say for now)
Libby:
Mary is acquainted with Libby but Libby thinks they're friends for some reason, even when they liked the same guy (Gabriel).
Current events in Mary's life:
At the end of Book 1, Mary is turned into a vampire but something strange is going with her vampirism....
~~~
Tagging: @choicesficwriterscreations
That's it! For now...
Edit: Thank you to @aria-ashryver for doing this edit of Mary.

The Met Gala 2024
The Met - An Introduction
2024's Met Gala! To celebrate the Costume Institute’s new exhibition: “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion", the Met Gala was sure to showcase a select array of items and pieces (250 in fact - all from Costume Institute’s permanent collection) from the last 400 years of fashion history. This year's Met Gala was taken over by Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Chris Hemsworth, all very notable and famous celebrities.
The Met's dress code was The Garden of Time. Although interpreted in a number of ways, what was clearly the more popular interpretation leant more towards a floral or nature idea. Floral-like outfits weren't just the ones to find it's way onto the red carpet.
Outfits
Let's take a look at some of the outfits showed off on the red carpet. Starting off we have Lana Del Rey, and American singer-songwriter, in Alexander McQueen.
Tumblr media
Next we have Anok Yai, a south Sudanese-American model, who donned a two piece suit studded with 98,000 Swarovski crystals.
Tumblr media
Next we have Nicki Minaj — Trinidadian-born rapper, singer, and songwriter — in Marni. A colourful ensemble, no doubt.
Tumblr media
Moving on we have Lil Nas X — an American rapper, singer, and songwriter — in Luar. Quite a nice piece, don't you agree?
Tumblr media
Next up, Karlie Kloss, an American fashion model, in Swarovski. It's in a beautiful shade of pink paired with the crystals, and the flowers and petals were a nice touch.
Tumblr media
Next on our list is Zendaya, American actress and singer, in Maison Margiela. A look completed by the makeup, Zendaya showed off her stunning blue and green gown and hat.
Tumblr media
Sixth on our list: Tyla, South African and American, in Balmain. Her dress is made of sand and her bag is an hourglass to represent time.
Tumblr media
Last on our list is Mona Patel, entrepreneur and philanthropist, in an Iris van Herpen gown. The butterflies on her sleeves actually move!
Tumblr media
There are many, many more stunning outfits, so do look them up if you can!
My Thought
I am a simple person - I have my opinions and I wish to speak of them. So who'll stop me from sharing my opinions on this year's Met? My opinions are as simple as I: I think that whilst there were lacklustre outfits, there were also show-stopping ones that caught people's attention in a positive way. I do find it quite nice to have this year's theme to be quite broad and vague, as it brought us a nice array of outfits.
------
Thanks to Vogue, I am able to write my mini-article/review.
------
But here's the important part!
The Palestinian protest!
I'm sure all of us are aware of the genocide. Israel has been carrying out genocide or Palestine, causing the death and injuries of Palestinians. There are many videos and images and articles on this genocide, and I'm sure by now all of you have seen them.
There were protests against Israel's wrongdoings outside the Met Gala this year, causing many of the protestors to be arrested.
In Central Park,  a group held cardboard signs bearing messages such as "No Met Gala While Bombs Drop in Gaza" and "No Celebration Without Liberation." Along Fifth Avenue, a larger contingent raised Palestinian flags, their chants of "Gaza! Gaza!" reverberating through the evening air. - NDTV WORLD
Don't forget to support Palestine in any way you can — whether spreading information and news about the genocide, boycotting brands, or donating money or food.
Don't forget your daily click: https://arab.org/click-to-help/palestine/

Signs
Signs
Drake (June 23, 2017)
This song was born out a collaboration between Drake and Louis Vuitton for their 2018 Spring/Summer Collection during Paris Fashion Week. This song details Drake trying to keep his emotions under control around a woman that just feels perfect for him in every way. It's the "signs of the times" because all of this tension between the both of them seems to be leading up to something that could cause a huge change in their dynamic.
In the pre-chorus Drake sings about having champagne just after waking up in the morning and then lamenting about how he can't "take things slowly." Drinking in the morning is a bad habit to set and could be a sign of someone who is on their way or already is an alcoholic. He's discussing his compulsive overindulgence when it comes to things and with people as something he wants to try to stop, but it's a bad habit. "She tryna take it all off for me/Tryna stay real close to me (Close)/I gotta catch myself." Like with the champagne, Drake finds it hard to keep himself under control when he's just dancing really close to a woman that turns him on. He doesn't want to "play himself" by looking like a fool if she isn't as into him as he is into her, so he tries to cool down by "taking it easy".
"Railiza, you need a… money and visa." In the first line of his first verse, Drake references a woman named Railiza Cepeda that he may (or may not) have been briefly involved with after she appeared in French Montana's No Shopping music video. "Howisha, you need a… baby with me, uh/And I'm takin' my time, just wait, don't leave." In this next line he shifts gears, going from talking about splurging on models to wanting to have a baby with someone he can't say no to. A girl that drinks like she's Bajan (his ex Rihanna) and dances like a Trinidadian (Nicki Minaj). "You want a supermodel pose like mi real friend Winnie." This bit is interesting because Winnie Harlow and Nicki Minaj are actually really good friends, and were great friends in 2017. Specifically, around February and March Nicki spent a lot of time in Europe to prepare for fashion week; she was with a lot of models. "I stay to myself, I'll explain myself, I can't play myself/Oh, first night, holy night, five in the morning, yeah-yeah (Yeah)/And it feels like you're mine, signs of the times, oh, what a time." Taking thigs back a little (trust me it will make sense), in an interview on Big Boys Neighborhood Drake was asked if he would save Wayne or Nicki if both of them were drowning in the ocean. Drake picked Nicki, his reasoning being that he wanted to have one last "magical experience" (sex) with her. With this I can fairly say that Drake sees having intercourse with Nicki as something incredibly special….."holy" even. Nicki was essentially moving pretty casually in 2017, and there were rumors that perhaps Nicki and Drake had sex for the first time that year. Not to spoil any future analysis down the line, but due to a "certain song" I'm inclined to believe that they did have sex in 2017. They were both in London for No Frauds early in the year, and then Nicki made a few special appearances with him in Paris in March. In February, a few days after linking up with Drake for the first time since 2014 she tweeted: "If you ask me I'm ready." Sound familiar? They're from that song Unthinkable. You know, the one Drake wrote about Nicki way back in 2010.

TEN INTERESTING TRINI NOVELS
Historical Dictionary of Trinidad and Tobago (Historical Dictionaries of the Americas)
As separate entities and later a unified state, the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago boast very unique histories. Initially claimed by the Spanish in 1498, these territories were affected by the imperialist thrusts of various European nations including the French, British and Dutch. The mercantilist infiltrations of these groups, particularly in the 18th century, led to the islands’ belated development as sugar producers and, particularly Trinidad, as a cradle of migration. World War II and the development of the oil and tourism industries in the 20th century transformed the economies, culture and society of these islands. The country has been one of the most important in the region in relation to economic and political leadership and as a centre of cultural development.
An Archaeological Study of the Red House, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago
The chapters in this collection are based on ground-breaking archaeological scholarship with a multidisciplinary approach, and as such the book will be of considerable interest to Caribbean archaeologists, bioarchaeologists, anthropologists, historians and heritage professionals. The book will also be of interest to general readers in the Caribbean and beyond, especially the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
 The Portuguese of Trinidad and Tobago: Portrait of an Ethnic Minority
Traditionally a navigating and migratory people, Portuguese settlers came to the Caribbean as early as the seventeenth century. The ancestors of the modern Portuguese community in Trinidad and Tobago hailed from the archipelago of Madeira, fleeing their homeland in search of an economic and religious haven from the 1830s onwards. They came neither to explore nor to conquer, had no history of land and slave ownership in the Caribbean, and they came without prestigious family names or old money. Yet within a few generations, struggles were overcome to push the community to the forefront of national life, in the areas of business, politics, religion and culture. Bound by language and traditions, the Portuguese were able to work together for their common good, the result of which was a proliferation of Portuguese businesses of various sizes and descriptions all over the country. Though few in number, the Portuguese contribution to their adopted homeland is of a significance beyond the small size of the community.
Every migrating group has a tale to tell. For years, the tale of the Madeirans in Trinidad and Tobago and Luso-Trinidadians and Tobagonians has gone untold. Here is an attempt to tell their story in the context of culture and entrepreneurship
From Oil to Gas and Beyond: A Review of the Trinidad and Tobago Model and Analysis of Future Challenges
From Oil to Gas and Beyond chronicles the history of the petroleum industry in Trinidad and Tobago and appraises major policy decisions impacting its economy. The book details the macroeconomic, commercial, and technical challenges faced by Trinidad and Tobago in the monetization of its oil and gas resources over the past one hundred years. The contributors cover several topics including local content, national participation, sustainability, communication, leadership, energy diplomacy, environmental law and macroeconomic policy.
Trinidad & Tobago (Discovering the Caribbean: History, Politics, and Culture)
Presents the geography, history, economy, cities and communities, and people and culture of Trinidad & Tobago. Includes recipes, related projects, and a calendar of festivals.
History of the People of Trinidad and Tobago
Dr. Eric Williams was Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago from 1961 until his death in 1981. He built his reputation as a historian as Professor of Political and Social Science at Howard University, before turning to active politics, founding the People's National Movement (PNM) and leading Trinidad and Tobago to independence in 1962.
Stark's Guide-Book and History of Trinidad
This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
The History of the West Indian Islands of Trinidad and Tobago
Very detailed history of these two side-by-side islands in the Caribbean.
Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana: Race and Politics in Two Plural Societies
In this book an attempt is made to probe more carefully the processes by which social and ethnic problems, as these pertain to Caribbean countries, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, are conveyed to the political arena and the mechanisms by which they determine critical outcomes. The authors of this book have accordingly distinguished between predisposing factors and what are described as triggering mechanisms. The factors that trigger dramatic changes will differ between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. In short, while in some respects these societies are similar, in others, there are dramatic differences in their respective histories and political developments.
The indigenous peoples of Trinidad and Tobago from the first settlers until today
This study relates the vicissitudes of the Amerindian peoples who lived or still inhabit the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, from the earliest occupants, ca. 8000 BC, until present. Using archaeological, ethnohistorical and linguistic data, it discusses the social, political, economic, and religious development of indigenous society through the ages. The Amerindian struggle with European colonization is chronicled in detail, following centuries of independent existence during pre-Columbian times, as well as the survival of the current people of indigenous ancestry in the twin-island republic.

● 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐨𝐬 ●
Zelina Vega, also known as Thea Trinidad, to her friends and Spitfire to her family; a nickname she cherishes as it was given to her by her late father.
Thea is a professional wrestler, actress, and model who was born on December 27, 1990, in Queens, New York. She is of Puerto Rican and Trinidadian descent and grew up in a family that had a strong passion for professional wrestling. Her father and uncle were wrestlers, and they would take Trinidad to watch their matches. This sparked the young Trinidad's love for wrestling, which she developed throughout her childhood and adolescence.
Thea is an INTP who tend to be self-sufficient and resourceful, and they like to work things out for themselves. This personality type enjoys unravelling life's riddles and puzzles.
As a Capricorn, Thea is known for her disciplined, organized, and ambitious personality. She is likely very focused on achieving her goals and willing to put in the hard work required to reach them. Capricorns are also known for being responsible and reliable, traits that would serve Thea well in her career as a professional wrestler.
Additionally, Capricorns tend to be quite reserved and can come across as serious or even cold to those who don't know them well. However, those who are close to a Capricorn often find them to be warm, loyal, and protective. Thea has spoken publicly about her struggles with anxiety and depression, which could be related to the tendency for Capricorns to be hard on themselves and place a lot of pressure on their own shoulders.
Thea lost her father 11th September 2001 in the terrorist attacks and ever since has struggled to come to terms with that. The grief overwhelms her more often than she'd like to admit and when it does she prefers to hide herself away not allowing others to see her as weak. Her father was and always will be her hero.
Despite her physique, Thea struggles immensely with her body image and spends alot of the time mentally arguing with herself and her brain over her body dysmorphia that on many occasions stops her from eating and causes her to work out until she almost passes out. This isn't known by anyone or those close to her; a well guarded secret that would leave her mortified if anyone close to her found out.
Connections.
Dakota Kai/Cheree: one of her closest friends that she enjoys gaming with and gossiping with.
Saraya: another of her closest friends that she turns to when she needs a different perspective on things. Thea has been a big supporter of Saraya and will always have her back no matter what.
Randy Orton: Up until recently, he had been her crush for the longest time, but a trip out on his boat revealed that her feelings were reciprocated. Thea is very smitten with this man and on the verge of being head over heels for him which she hasn't felt in a very long time.

Nestor Alexander Haddaway is a Trinidadian born German singer. He is known for his famous hit song 'What is Love' which is a timeless hit. Haddaway had joined a medical school but wasn't enjoying himself in that field. He dropped out of the school and was later working in bars in Cologne, West Germany to support himself. He even formed his own company called 'Energy' which dealt with fashion shows and modelling. In 1992, he signed with Coconut Records which was his first label and released his debut track 'What is Love' which topped the charts worldwide. He then went on to release his other tracks like 'Life' which also did pretty well commercially. His influence deteriorated with time as he failed to be successful with his later albums Let's Do It Now(1998) and My Face(2001). But in a way, he was quite successful in life. He chose to do what he wanted to do. He didn't hesitate to leave the medical line to pursue his calling which is something a lot of people don't do. He established his own business after working odd jobs in the bar. His story is quite fascinating from that perspective. Haddaway explains 'What is Love' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYE5U6Y4bis Haddaway talked about what it was like to produce his debut track 'What is Love' and whether he knew it would be a hit or not. In the interview, he talks about what it felt like after his single became a hit along with other songs like 'Life', 'Rock My Heart' etc which were produced after it. Best Songs by Haddaway 1. What is Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEXWRTEbj1I 2. Life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyaGQPjXGyE Haddaway's style of music was unique and had a different vibe to it altogether. I don't think there has ever been another artist like Haddaway. His songs were extremely pleasant to listen to and score high in terms of rhythm, melody and tune. Overall, I like his songs very much. Let me know what you guys think about it.

THE REVOLUTIONARILY INCOMPARABLE ABBEY LINCOLN- AMINATA MOSEKA AND BAD BLACK EXPO HISTORICAL SUCCESS! Aminata is receiving Critical Acclaim in “Summer Of Soul (Or.. When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)”, Questlove's documentary of the The Harlem Cultural Festival! She made her first album, “Affair, a Story of a Girl in Love” (Liberty), and appeared in her first film, the Jayne Mansfield vehicle “The Girl Can’t Help It” wearing the dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”. Abbey believed that singing is a political act, “Freedom, say freedom. Throw those shackles and chains away…" In autumn 1960, Lincoln participated in the recording of one of the most celebrated jazz contributions to a wider political and social context, Roach and Oscar Brown Jr. landmark, “We Insist! Freedom Now Suite”. A testament against racism with ambitious splicing of work-song rhythms, the authoritative tenor sax of Hawkins counterbalancing Booker Little's mercurial bop trumpet playing, multi-percussion ensemble sections and Lincoln's moving…… raging lyrics, powerful vocals, screams and all, saturated the soul, putting her at the forefront of the civil rights movement! Freedom Now became a milestone in jazz history. A fashion icon, Abbey was the FIRST FEMALE entertainer to rock an Afro hairdo that led hairdressers to protest she was going to put them out of business. She played a large role in civil rights activism in the 1960s as she and other artists performed at benefits and fundraisers for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), among other civil rights groups. Lincoln’s music began to reflect injustices blacks experienced in America in albums. Abbey, Maya Angelou and a Trinidadian-African, named Rosa Guy, formed the Cultural Association for Women of African Heritage and took heroic stands on African issues in the United States and aboard. News from Italy: A Deep Dive with Ferragamo's First Black Creative Director
When I think about Salvatore Ferragamo, my mind instantly goes to classic and conservative. The recent rebrand included everything from a name change to just Ferragamo, a new red, and a new creative director by the name of Maximillian Davis who did a deep dive with the Wall Street Journal’s Rory Satran. The article discusses Davis’s experience joining the legacy house and his background.
Davis was brought in to modernize Ferragamo, no easy task since the brand has been known for it’s old-school, conservative look for as long as I can remember. The WSJ called it “your grandma’s favorite show brand” because of Ferragamo’s legacy with American A-listers in Hollywood. I think it’s really important to acknowledge Davis’s background when analyzing his impact at Ferragamo. In the article, he credits his Caribbean-immigrant parents with introducing him to fashion at an early age. Davis has been intimately familiar with the Salvatore Ferragamo logo and the Gancini buckle from an early age. He appreciates the clean and classic nature of tailoring because it was instilled in him from his father, there’s a legacy to his story and it aligns with Ferragamo’s aesthetics.
I think Davis is part of a new generation that will serve to grow and continue the legacy of Italy’s luxury fashion houses. He has a legacy of his own and is adding to Ferragamo’s by bringing the glam back. Ferragamo is back on A-listers, back to its roots of being photographed on actors, models, singers, and even Formula 1 drivers. Davis is Ferragamo’s first Black creative director, and his British, Trinidadian, and Jamaican backgrounds come into play as he steps on the Italian luxury scene. Because not only did he make a statement of inclusivity with androgynous tailoring and gain support from Black A-listers like Zendaya and Lewis Hamilton who were among the first to be photographed in his designs for Ferragamo, but he hopes to just be a spark in a more significant movement towards revitalization through inclusivity in the world of luxury.

Looking at Cardi B in a Larger Cultural Context
Tumblr media
In my blog post, I will be analyzing Cardi B because she is such an interesting person, and while some may just view her as a raunchy stripper-turned rapper who shamelessly flaunts her WAP, I see her as an inspirational character that has impacted sex culture, feminist culture, and POC culture. I believe it can also be safely said that Cardi B is currently an easily recognizable culture figure of the past 10 years through her chart-topping and Grammy-awarding music and unfiltered bold personality.
Looking at how Cardi B first rose to fame, it’s already pretty unprecedented that she was first working as a stripper before starting her music career. This is interesting because stripping is not considered a “real” or socially acceptable job for women. They are constantly disrespected in the field and objectified. However Cardi B saw her stripping job as the job that “...was positive for her life in many ways: ‘It really saved me from a lot of things. When I started stripping I went back to school.’ She has stated that she became a stripper to escape poverty and domestic violence, having been in an abusive relationship at the time after being kicked out of her mother's house, and that stripping was her only way to earn enough money to escape the situation and get an education”.
I think this helped re-form the public view of the sex industry because it shows that stripping is not a job that should be looked down upon. I think this helps strippers feel less ashamed about themselves and for others to look at them more as equals because of Cardi B’s confidence and positive view toward her experience. In fact, to add as a contrast, Cardi B was also affiliated with a gang, the Bloods, when she was in high school and she actually does not have a positive view on that experience and does not recommend it for anyone. Therefore, I think that she has made an influence on sex culture, specifically on the sex industry through her public view of stripping as the experience that changed her life for the positive, and hopefully she inspires other women in the industry as well, because she has demonstrated that she was able to achieve her dreams and transition from a stripper to a world-famous rapper.
Cardi B also impacted sex culture with her open sex-positive messages and sexual expression in her music. The most common example everyone can think is WAP, which is already, with the title almost screaming right in your face, as raunchy as it could get. However with WAP’s debut as #1 on multiple charts and winning many awards as well, it proudly promotes Cardi B’s, as well as the featuring artist, Megan Thee Stallion’s control of their own sexuality and prowess and celebrating their womanhood. With the all-female collaboration on top of that in the music video with features of Kylie Jenner, Rosalia, Normani, Latto, and other female artists/sex symbols, the song really unites women to not be afraid to express themselves.

Cardi B has not only impacted sex culture, but also the culture around POC and minorities, and we can see that just by simply listening to her, as her thick New York accent will immediately hit you and she never tries to hide it. Cardi B is of Dominican and Trinidadian descent with African roots, but born and raised in Bronx, New York, and Spanish was her first language. She is very proud of her roots and in her hit song, “I Like It” featuring Latin artists J Balvin and Bad Bunny, she embraces her Dominican roots through its Latin flair.

She has also incorporated her Latin side by singing in Spanish in the songs “Taki Taki” and “La Modelo” with Latin artist Ozuna.

She has become a proud role model for many aspiring people of color, especially females, to work hard to pursue their dreams as anything is possible for them. As stated by Pizzabottle news website, “She stands for female empowerment–working hard for yours, not relying on others for your success and finances. She talks to young girls in impoverished neighborhoods–much like the one she grew up in–to inspire them to reach for more, to dream big and achieve it.” So again, Cardi B not only impacted the culture of POC nor sex culture, but female empowerment culture altogether.
It is interesting to note that while there is a lot that Cardi B has been praised for, there has definitely been a lot she has been criticized for as well, which makes her quite controversial at times. To start with, the song WAP has received a lot of criticism by plenty of American conservative commenters. Complex Magazine stated that, “...James P. Bradley, went so far to claim that 'Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion are what happens when children are raised without God and without a strong father figure,' an immensely controversial statement, especially given that Megan’s father passed away when she was 15.” Complex Magazine also brought up a very good point that, “These ludicrous critiques show, once again, that sex is only a taboo expression in music when women—specifically women of color—explore it. Love-making, sex, f*cking, or whatever you might call it, isn’t a new theme in music… So why do we only hear criticism like this when artists like Cardi and Megan do it?” This opens up a conversation about the misogyny in the rap and hip-hop genre, which has always been male-dominated, as well as opening up the feminist culture that Cardi B is fighting for.
Another criticism of the WAP song was by Ben Shapiro, another American conservative, who analyzed the song and music video and sarcastically stated, ““Guys, this is what feminists fought for… This is what the feminist movement is all about. It’s not really about women being treated as independent, full-rounded human beings. It’s about wet a– p-word. And if you say anything differently, [it’s] because you’re a misogynist, you see.”  Below is a tweet that Shapiro posted criticizing the song, and one of the many memes responding to his strange critique.
Tumblr media
I honestly just found this funny and I think this only publicly revealed in an embarrassing manner that he does not even understand basic female anatomy.
Overall, Cardi B has become a very prominent cultural influence to women and people of color and continues to show her support for them. Although since her breakthrough in 2017, I have heard very strong opinions for and against her, I believe it is an objective fact that Cardi B has impacted these cultures through her social media and musical platforms. I hope that after reading my blog post, some of you out there can view Cardi B in a different, perhaps more positive light from seeing the positive intentions she has to re-form these cultures.
