Description:
Troides Helena, the common birdwing, is a butterfly belonging to the family Papilionidae. It is essentially a forest species, found in forested areas as well as garden and parks where its host plants are cultivated. This beautiful butterfly is capable of flying long distances and at considerable height in a bird-like manner. In India, these beautiful butterflies are found in North-east region including Sikkim, West Bengal and Orissa. I found this adult male species stops to feed at flowers and observed it flutters its forewing whilst its hind wings kept relatively still. Its pleasant beauty mesmerizes me and I bagged it in frame without delay. Hope, it will get favour on visiting my galleries; have a nice day friend :) Follow me on: Facebook: http://bit.ly/2g8FFIj Flickr: http://bit.ly/2gQRdhk

Common birdwing (Troides helena cerberus) male, nectaring on Lantana, Thailand
I was very pleased to come across this butterfly, the common birdwing, recently. Although it is fairly common, I had not had a chance to try and photograph it before. There are at least 25 subspecies of Troides helena, but because of the location, in northern Thailand, this is almost certainly, Troides helena cerberus(…

This caterpillar took some digging, but it looks like the beautiful larva of the supremely beautiful Birdwing Butterfly, probably Troides helena .

I didn’t even realize Birdwings live in Japan, but I’m going to keep an eye out for them now! That one shouldn’t be walking on the ground-- he probably fell out of his host plant (the wikipedia says they feed on Aristolochia and Pararistolochia exclusively, one species being Aristolochia tagala).
