The Destruction of Engine Culture:
Ok, so this is going to be another long, and rambling post. So be warned. And as usual, this is a RWS theory post, so there will be talk of scrap.
That said, let's dive into the destruction of engine culture.
So, I think the first thing to ask is what would be 'engine culture' and how would it affect the railways of Britian (and globally) - and the answer is quite simple: it's the same as human culture. Humans have developed cultures for millennia, and they are often quite similar, and this is hypothesized to be because these cultures had similar things to warn about. Warning about the dangers of flooding, of wild animals, of droughts and fires. Many of the oldest stories are tales told to teach practical lessons. Little Red Riding Hood is as much about stranger danger and the threat wild animals pose as it is a story about a crossdressing wolf. Some scientists believe games like tag and catch were developed by our hunter-gatherer ancestors to teach hand-eye coordination and improve stamina. This is of course very early culture: stories, games and songs passed down from one generation to the next - but that's what we're talking about here. Railways are 220 years old at the oldest possible (and there are surviving engines from this era), so it's an early era of culture for them.
Furthermore, engines would inherit much of their railways' culture, depending on where they are. An engine working in Tsarist Russia would grow up with that culture, whereas an engine in Argentina, or France, or Kenya would grow up with the local cultures. This includes language, music, belief systems and otherwise. So that's the basis of engine culture itself: human culture. Engines learn human language, they sing human songs and they might even take on human beliefs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They do, however, have their own beliefs. Lady, for one, with her gold dust and magic, has been used by fanfic authors as an 'engine deity', while Thomas and Friends alluded to Proteus being a deity of some sort, with a magic lamp. These engine 'deities' exist, it seems, as a focal point for engines. Proteus represents the ability to make wishes - something engines really don't have, while Lady represents freedom. She's able to travel great distances on her own, between continents, without needing to pull trains. Does that not sound like the railway version of attaining freedom?
So the engines have 'deities'. I won't call them gods, because that's very likely not what they are, but they are legends told by older engines to younger ones.
The other kind of legends that would really dominate engine culture would be practical moral tales - in the same vein as Little Red Riding Hood being about stranger danger and the threat of wild animals, stories told between engines would be warnings about the trucks, or bad stretches of line, or dangerous weather. But unlike fairy tales, these stories would come from experience. Engine culture is very new, and it's being developed continuously during the Victorian era. Incidents like the Tay Bridge Disaster, or William Huskisson's death, or the Abbots Ripton rail disaster all are quickly turned into stories told by the older engines to teach the new arrivals (of which there are hundreds by the year) about how to run the railway as safely as possible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The engines also develop games which help them to watch signals, or counter miles, or figure out their location in adverse conditions. These games started as training exercises, but became more fun as young engines made them competitions. They also develop songs of their own, which can tell messages:
"Once an engine when fixed to a train Was alarmed at a few drops of rain, So went "puff" from its funnel Then fled to a tunnel, And would not come out again."
The message: don't stop in a tunnel.
But the thing is, this post is about the destruction of engine culture, and now that I've explained it, I'm going to explore how it was decimated.
And for that, we start with the Second World War, which saw a complete upheaval of the railways of Britain. The war was especially hard on the railways, and engines were often used around the clock with no rest. This meant that a lot of the newer engines never got to hear these stories before being sent out for weeks at a time, as they never spent any time at a single shed. And even if they were parked up at a shed, everyone was so exhausted they didn't have time to tell tales. And at the end of the war, a lot of the oldest engines were withdrawn, completely worn out. The oldest engines were the ones who told many of the tales, and their loss was the start of a decline.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Railway Series, however, would pick up a lot of the slack from this loss, as many of its earliest stories were in that same moral vein as traditional 'engine culture' stories, focusing on listening to elders, not stopping in tunnels, being patient, gentle with coaches, careful with trucks - it's all there. And I can see that being due to Edward teaching the Reverend many of these stories, in a bid to keep them from vanishing. And he would continue on, joined by other older engines like Skarloey, Rheneas and Toby, as the book series went on. Things like listening to advice and not acting recklessly pop up constantly - especially with Duncan, who Skarloey had to deal with.
It all gets worse when British Railways forms though. And this is where the 'railway rulebook', the attitudes of diesels and the doctrine of BR all come in to play. As the doctrine and official rulebook of British Railways portrays steam engines as inferior, weaker engines, the diesels are indoctrinated into believing it - and thus, they refuse to listen. Take Diesel for example, who believes that diesels can just arrive at a yard and 'improve it'. He is immediately foiled by some jammed breaks - something he may have learnt about from a story or a tale from a steam engine. But he never stopped to listen. And it's the same across the country, across the world in fact. As the successful diesel classes prove themselves to their managers, they are rolled out and steam engines are withdrawn - and with that, so is the culture they were the keepers of.
Tumblr media
But this isn't quite the end of this 'engine culture' yet, because one group willing to listen to the steam engines are the 'failures'. Engines like BoCo and Derek would be very willing to listen to the engines that have tales that may just help them. Stories like how to best use sand in a storm, or how to conserve energy over the Settle-Carlisle route. And so even as steam dies, these 'failures' hold their culture, and try their best to preserve it, alongside the preserved engines. The Railway Series does too, such as in 'Stepney the Bluebell Engine', where sanding is explicitly mentioned. Another group that take in this engine culture is the GWR diesel-hydraulics, who grew up with GWR ideology, and thus would have been more willing to listen to their steam ancestors.
Tumblr media
But these 'non-standard' engines were also quickly wiped out. And this leaves only a few pockets of engines who remember the old stories: the preserved engines, and the few Gen-1 diesels who did listen. By the end of the working lives of the Class 40s, the Deltics and the 'Peaks', they are the last engines who remember the old stories from the steam era working on British Railways, and when they are scrapped, the next generation grows up relearning everything.
Because the fact is that these stories held a major purpose, and the destruction of that culture means that every mistake every warned against is suddenly being made again, and again, and again. We notice this in the Railway Series, where Diesel, and Class 40, and D199 and even Bear all make very elementary mistakes that would have been warned against in these cultural stories - like taking care around trucks or looking out for the wind. And it only gets worse as this first generation are scrapped. Engines scramble to a standstill on leaves again, engines get trapped in floods, or lost in storms, or run through signals - and it's because the games, the songs, the stories, everything that would have prevented these accidents is lost.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's not until these diesels reach preservation that they hear the stories remembered by the steam engines, and that's when they realise that... hey, maybe the ancestors were right after all.
The saddest part is that it's not only a global thing, but that it's still very much a problem on modern railways. The loss of 'engine culture' between the 1950s and the 1980s would have a domino effect that would still impact modern railways, as the even newer electric engines and multiple units face the same issues but with no prior knowledge.
The pictures in this post are not mine.

Proteus sat on a fallen log and hung his lamp on one of the branches. It was a rather rainy day, but he didn’t mind it. When it rained, all the animals go into hiding leaving him with the forest to himself.
Proteus produced a fishing rod and casted it into the roaring stream below, even though he doesn’t need to eat, he still enjoyed a nice fish dinner once in a while. In fact, he could do with a nice hot fish dinner right now.
He hummed to himself a little tune until a familiar ball of golden light came over to him. It hovered over the log seemingly curious of what he was doing.
“Hello Rusty.” Proteus said to the ball of light, “I see you have decided to take a bit of a break from your engine form, eh?”
The light darted back and forth a little bit as if agreeing with proteus’s words. As much as Rusty enjoyed leaving his engine form in the mortal realm, it did come with some downsides, one of them being that only a portion of his god form is visible in the mortal realm and he couldn’t exactly speak in this form in this realm. But he would admit that he enjoyed being able to fly across the island and see sights that he couldn’t see from the rails.
Proteus smiled at Rusty, “how long do you have until you have to go back?”
Rusty slowly moved methodically above the log, Proteus nodded, “half an hour, I see.” He made room on the log, “you can stay with me here if you want to.”
Rusty hesitated for a moment before slowly lowering onto the log next to proteus, the two sat in silence listening to the rain pattering and the river flowing below them.

My Au Lady Lore
So basically this is a short but long run down of the lore in my AU about Lady, most of it is rambling so i apologize if it's long, but to start it off she's definitely not all that she seems...
Whilst she can be nice that's only a mask of what she actually is, the rare times she appears on the railway she acts happy but once she returns back to the narrowgauge mountains to hide away, she's not at all close to being happy, she hates being trapped on his earth but giving credit where credit is due she is grateful that she is hidden away from the rest of the world thanks to Sir Topham Hatts help or else she'd be in much more danger.
As mentioned before she mostly hides away deep within the abandoned narrow gauge mountain lines, Rusty and Proteus are about the only narrow gauge engines who know of her, Proteus more so then Rusty for reasons I'll explain later, but because of this she's been able to keep her reputation as just a mere "folklore" to the island despite her living and appearing on the island at random so sightings of her are at any given moment.
Despite all this she doesn't at all enjoy her stay here on earth, mostly because she knows she doesn't belong here, this isn't a depression deal or bully situation but it's because she actually knows she's not meant to be here thanks to the fact she was once a god, she still is but now she's limited/ trapped in a locomotives body (not physically but more like a soul trapped situation if that makes sense)
Merely born within the stars, like most gods are, and where most reside at, she observed human kind and watched the earth below, as the years passed she wasn't at all interested in visiting earth thanks to mankind's dangerous curiosity but little would she know that thanks to humans and their curiosity that it would later trap her for many years to come.
Tumblr media
The process of how it happened is quite strange and confusing for mortals but somehow in the process of a locomotive being built, that instead of a mortal soul being sent in to make it come to life, the universe mistook her as one and instead sent her soul down instead forever trapping her in the locomotive and quite possibly binding her to earth for eternity.
You can imagine her surprise but mere rage when she found out about this, she's since been looking and trying to find ways to escape this "mortal hell" so she can be one with the gods again, but alas she has yet to find a way, however, she'd also find that she isn't the first to be like this, Proteus was also a victim of such a mishaps, but instead of keeping his immortality he was merely stripped of it and half of his magic upon being bound to earth, but also unlike her, he's found a way to make peace with this, whilst she has yet to do that, if at all...
Whilst Lady resides in the mountains like Proteus, she also has made herself a small home, despite never sleeping or eating, as she finds there is no use for it since she is still immortal, she still used her powers to make a small "safe space" for herself incase anything goes wrong she knows where to run to, her home is very similar to that of the hut/ shed that Burnett Stone kept her hidden in, afterall he was her first and last driver as well as the first human (besides Sir Topham) to ever show any care towards her, and it was the only place she considered "home" until Burnetts passing, although he couldn't understand her or her talk about "being with the gods again" he still made a huge impression on her...
Tumblr media
Granted most stuff is pretty much useless to her in her own home she still finds it a bit fascinating to look at but also in case she ever does find peace with the fact that maybe earth isn't so bad..
To deal with any trespassers or anyone she deams as a threat she has a particular weapon on her she uses personalized to her fighting style and can be altered with her magic
Tumblr media
Reason being she feels to protect herself is not only because of humans but because she's recently discovered that earth not only holds the dangers of humankind but also a type of crystal that can not only hurt her but kill her if it fell into the wrong hands...
Tumblr media
Danbellite is a type of crystal and material that can be molded into anything at will, even in it's original condition it can still harm Lady, but once molded into a weapon, it can do more then just harm her, not many are lucky enough to find it as it usually resides in the core of mountains but old cave mines have surely come close to finding it, luckily it's deemed too much of a dangerous material to try and harvest thanks to it's location but that doesn't mean it will stop people from trying...
Tumblr media
Her blood is that of a weird one too, unlike humans blood her and Proteus share a similar type of blood with gold dust particles in it so when cut it's easy to see it glistening under the light
Tumblr media
And finally her eyes, while they're usually golden human eyes they can change depending on her mood as seen here, it's usually not often she gets mad, at least she tries not to especially infront of people.
Anywho that's all i currently have for her right now, if i decide to change it or add more to it I'll probably just make a separate post about it but this is something that's been on my mind for a long while now that i figured I'd scribble down and post eventually so here it finally is!!

(it's not letting me reblog sorry ^^)
Proteus: *he got up as well before touching his shoulder* now 10 don't say that, I'm sure you want all this to be over eventually and I'm sure it will. However stressing out like this won't help you focus, don't wanna end up making a mistake.
D10, he sighs and then he sits down once again, he can't even make up his mind if he wants to sit down or stand up he feels so scatterbrain.
D10: I don't know what to do anymore...
Tumblr media
D10: I always have somehow made everything worse! Why can't something normal happen???
D10 could feel the heaviness in his mind, the pressure around his head, all the stress.
He wanted to scream and just yell out all of his frustrations and pain, but he knows that it's just better to swallow up his struggles and not show his own son how much of a mess he truly was at that moment.
Diesel: Dad?
D10: .... I want to go home..
That's all D10 could say without sounding like he was about to breakdown.

In my ttte railroad of the dead AU, I headcanon that Rusty is actually a messenger type god sent to Sodor by Lady.
Rusty isn’t his actual name, his engine form is actually a disguise and is capable of moving by himself, but he allows a driver to operate him as not to raise any suspicion.
When he’s on the magic railroad (which is the equivalent of the afterlife for engines and shining time station being the equivalent of Mount Olympus or Asgard in my AU) he has the power to form tracks wherever he goes and adjust the tracks gauge at will allowing him to travel on any gauge of tracks) his job on the magic railroad is maintaining the tracks because even magic railroads need to have well maintained tracks. He can also deliver messages to the mortal world and guard other engines. In short, he is the primary connection between the magic railroad and our world.
Proteus in this AU, is more of a trickster/shapeshifter god. He has sharp wits and is near impossible to catch. Usually, if an engine wants to catch him and use his lucky lamp, they have to rely on their wits to outsmart him, even if an engine is lucky enough to catch him, proteus is not quick to hand his lamp over and will challenge the engine to a game of wits to see if they are truly worthy of the lamp, if the engine looses, they will face dire consequences. Only two known engines are known to have successfully outwitted proteus: Duke, and Thomas.
Duke’s discovery was no accident, Proteus got bored one day and decided to give Duke a chance of having his wish granted. Proteus challenged Duke to a battle of wits to which Duke won and his wish of being found was granted.
Thomas’s story is a bit more shaky as it’s constantly being changed and embellished. But it is safe to assume that Thomas’s cheeky tendencies were able to outsmart proteus.
