The Federal Election Commission recently let a US company that was quietly bankrolled by Russian oligarchs off with a slap on the wrist despite discovering that it had illegally funneled Russian funds to US political candidates in the 2018 midterm elections, two Democratic FEC commissioners said in a scathing statement issued Friday.
“Half the Commission chose to reject the recommendation of the agency’s nonpartisan Office of General Counsel and turned a blind eye to the documented use of Russian money for contributions to various federal and state committees in the 2018 elections,” wrote the two commissioners, Ellen Weintraub and Shana Broussard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyone who follows campaign finance knows that the FEC has been toothless for years due to GOP commissioners’ opposition to any enforcement of laws designed to oversee money in politics. But Weintraub and Broussard suggest the agency hit a new low by letting the US firm, American Ethane, off with a deal in which it agreed to pay only a small civil fine.
Though based in Houston, Texas, and run by American CEO John Houghtaling, 88% of American Ethane was owned by three Russian nationals—Konstantin Nikolaev, Mikhail Yuriev, and Andrey Kunatbaev. The FEC report said that Nikolaev, an oligarch and Russian billionaire with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, is the controlling shareholder. Separately, Nikolaev also underwrote efforts by Maria Butina, a Russian gun rights activist, to cultivate ties with the National Rifle Association officials and with associates of Donald Trump around the time of the 2016 election. In 2018, Butina acknowledged acting as an unregistered Kremlin agent and pleaded guilty to participating in a conspiracy against the United States. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison but was deported six months later.
According to lobbying disclosures, the company was seeking help from US officials in its efforts to sell US ethane to China and, in 2018, had hired a US lobbying firm, Turnberry Solutions, with close ties to former Trump campaign chief Corey Lewandowski. A year later, Lewandowki officially joined Turnberry, after previously disputing his connections to the firm. Turnberry, which traded on ties to Trump, shut down in 2021, months after he left office.
The FEC investigation began after it received a complaint citing press reports on American Ethane’s ties to Nikolaev and its donations to lawmakers. Weintraub and Broussard noted that the FEC found that American Ethane “made contributions using funds derived from loans from foreign entities ultimately owned by Russian nationals.” Federal law bans foreign funds in US elections, as well as direct corporate donations to candidates. American Ethane seems to have done both. The FEC found that the company made more than $66,000 in donations using money it got from offshore firms in the form of loans. According to an FEC general counsel’s report released last year, the owners of the offshore firms included Alexander Voloshin, a Russian politician and former state power company official, and Roman Abramovich, an infamous Russian oligarch and former owner of the British football powerhouse Chelsea. The money the company used to dole out donations ultimately came from the oligarchs, the FEC said.
Tumblr media
During its four-year investigation, the FEC found that the funds initially put up by Abromovich and other Russian nationals were then funneled to Republicans in Louisiana: Sens. John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy, a political action committee run by Kennedy, a leadership fund run by House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, a PAC backing Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, and the campaigns of Reps. Mike Johnson and Garrett Graves. Other contributions went to state lawmakers. The report didn’t explain why the company focused on Louisiana but the state is home to many natural gas firms, and its lawmakers advocate for the industry.
The lawmakers who received funds have not been accused of knowingly taking Russian money, though the final report from the initial investigation noted, “American Ethane attempted to make more political contributions, but those recipient committees never deposited American Ethane’s checks.”
American Ethane argued that the funds the company first received appeared as loan to the American corporation. Therefore, they claimed the donations it made were not foreign. The FEC rejected that argument. But it still recommended the firm only pay $9,500 as a civil penalty.
“The foreign-influence problem has not gone away in the meantime, to put it mildly,” Weintraub and Broussard wrote. “In this case, it is beyond unfortunate that for three of our colleagues, it was a bridge too far to penalize the use of Russian oligarchs’ money to influence U.S. elections.”

True Estate Tossing - Is Turning Actual House the Brightest Solution to Get Started in Real Property?
Nevertheless, some home values are based on subjective responses from citizens living in a certain home, and so the given figures , and property evaluation may be holding on a wishful considering rather than a real gratitude. This is wherever real estate auctions https://exploremiamirealestate.com/aventura/turnberry-towers/ come in picture, to see possible clients in regards to the house, and the expense possibilities, providing them with a definite image of the real estate's worth.
Even though some structures such as for example Lemon Region properties , slipped their values in 2007, however they recovered well after. So this really is still another reason as a vendor, you must never fear if you notice a temporally price drop, since it's regular from time to time.
For instance, about 81% owners, suppliers, agents, respected in 2007 that their house property prices were over $1 million, against 75% in 2006. Therefore things are to discover the best and it would appear that many of house agents have eventually understood what this business is really about. It will take plenty of patience and power to maintain your property's value among prime ones on real-estate market. But Norquist, trusts that numerous Newport Beach fights are nearby the level, sustaining this town has survived the "housing slump" much better than different locations. But, the unexpected surprise attacked more on revenue, which he admits they are on a falling side today, but there's however expect greater times.
Newport Beach is well noted for their highest-valued real-estate houses in the U.S., being a ideal place for real-estate organization. It's site and vicinity to the water, and the seaside entrance view increase it's property price considerably. Auctions of this type are very fascinating and those who find themselves interested in real-estate business domain should not miss them. You are able to understand a whole lot on such events.

Hundreds of roofing contractors from across the United States and beyond traveled to South Florida to be part of RC’s 15th annual Best of Success conference at the J.W. Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa in September.
RC Publisher Jill Bloom kicked off the event reminding attendees of the event’s history and overall mission to help roofing contractors improve their businesses.
“The first Best of Success conference launched with 75 people, in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and wow! Look where we are today,” Bloom said while looking out at the crowd of more than 550 attendees. “We go back and forth between the East Coast, West Coast and sometimes the central U.S., and peer-to-peer sharing is the foundation of what we do.”
Bloom also touched on recent inspiration provided by serial entrepreneur and business coach Jesse Itzler, who delivered the keynote address at the 2019 International Roofing Expo in Nashville. During his speech, Itzler talked about his experience of hiring a former U.S. Navy SEAL to live with his family for 30 days, which he later turned into a book.
“The stories he shared, and the life-changing takeaways from the experience truly made an impact and made me think about what we’ve done here at Best of Success for 15 years,” Bloom said. “What struck me from his book is you can do so much more than you realize if you just stretch yourself. I mean mental barriers we put on ourselves that we don’t even realize.”

Gender Gap
The unique roofing industry experience began with multiple events before the conference’s official start, including a workshop organized by National Women in Roofing (NWIR) that focused on how women can assert and articulate their ideas effectively in the workplace. Roughly two dozen women were treated to a presentation by Thea Dudley, of Pocket Protectors LLC, titled “Know Your Worth at Work (and how to leverage it).”
Dudley, who previously served as vice president of customer financial relations at SRS Distribution, presented eye-opening statistics about women in the workforce, including how women make up only 19 percent of C-suite executives. She said part of this stems from how, if someone doesn’t believe in themselves or their career goals, then they can’t expect others to believe in them.
“If you think of yourself as a product, whether you work for a company or yourself, you’re a product, and what you have to market is your skills and yourself and what you bring to the table,” Dudley said.
Dudley provided advice on how to become a self-promoter and accomplish career goals, from conducting honest self-evaluations to keeping a career journal to chronicle career highlights.
“Don’t worry so much about career pathing, be a strategic opportunist, and shameless self-promotion is your friend,” Dudley said. “It’s okay to toot your own horn.”
During the event, NWIR representatives announced the organization is rolling out a new program for members to become mentors or mentees. Members can update their profiles to list themselves as a mentor or mentee, and upon doing so, can search for a match using criteria like department or company.
Michelle Boykin, COO of Rackley Roofing, spoke highly of mentorship, saying it is important for women in the industry to find other women to lean on and learn from.
“Had I not joined NWIR years ago I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Boykin, who serves as NWIR Treasurer. “If you’re not utilizing it to be your best self, I encourage you to do that today.”
Time to Connect
As the roofing industry continues to evolve, so does the Best of Success conference as an event. Those that arrived early were again greeted with a welcome reception on the outskirts of one of the resort’s elegant outdoor pools. That was just the warm-up to the annual networking reception along the picturesque golf course following the first day’s festivities.
New this year, RC added additional time after the close of day one for a Speaker Connect session. All roofing professionals scheduled to present over the two days were stationed at small tables set up just outside the main conference area to answer questions and meet other attendees face-to-face.
“We wanted to give our speakers more of an opportunity to engage with roofing contractors and the feedback was tremendous,” Bloom said. “This helped advance the learning piece of Best of Success, while also giving attendees a better opportunity to meet presenters and drill down on their topic of expertise.”
Big Winners
RC continued its annual tradition of announcing the Residential and Commercial Roofing Contractors of the Year at the conclusion of day one of the 15th Best of Success conference.
Kelly Roofing, of Bonita Springs, Fla., was named the 2019 Residential Roofing Contractor of the Year, and Don Kennedy Roofing, of Nashville, earned the 2019 Commercial Roofing Contractor of the Year designation.
RC Editorial Director Rick Damato and Editor Art Aisner delivered the awards before a packed ballroom of more than 500 roofing professionals in attendance.
Roughly 100 contractors from across the country submitted applications for the award earlier this year.
“Ken has a great roofing story, from being thrust into leadership at such a young age to navigating a family business through ups and downs over decades,” said Bloom. “But beyond his business success, he’s the kind of guy you want to surround yourself with because he’s organized, motivating and inspirational.”
Kelly, who took over his father’s business, was thrilled to accept the award, and made sure his first call after receiving it was to his father.
“This is one of those moments where you say to yourself, ‘You arrived,’” Kelly said. “This is the Super Bowl of the industry.”
Kennedy said he was just as humbled for the honor and to be able to share it with most of his family in attendance. He also presented his company’s story the following day during a presentation.
“It was a great surprise,” Kennedy said. “This is just a summation of everything that the people we work with has come together and they’ve created a great thing.”
In presenting the award to Kennedy, Damato noted how all of Kennedy’s employees work and act like they are the owners, and how the business constantly strives to better itself.
“This business had everything in order, it was focused on getting better. It’s more than a family business, it’s a family,” Damato said. “Consistently managing to attract the best people is one of the many reasons it makes our 2019 Commercial Contractor of the Year so special.”
The Roofing Technology Think Tank (RT3) awarded Rackely Roofing President Curtis Sutton with its first-ever Innovator of the Year Award during day one of RC’s Best of Success.
RT3 is a group of progressive roofing professionals focused on technology solutions in the roofing industry. The group provides insights from progressive thought leaders both inside and outside the roofing industry along with practical resources for implementing potential solutions successfully.
Charles Antis, founder and CEO of Antis Roofing & Waterproofing, along with Anna Anderson, CEO of Art Unlimited, presented the award. Anderson, who serves as Award Task Team Leader and an RT3 board member, said it was difficult selecting the first recipient of the new award.
“We had many great nominations and it was very hard to narrow the field down to just one,” said Anderson. “We selected Rackley Roofing because they embrace technology and have demonstrated that they are early adopters when it comes to implementing new innovations.”
Sutton brings a respect for the traditional craftsmanship of a professional roofer and passion for the latest technological innovations. Under his leadership, Rackley has introduced industry-leading technologies like Rackley RoofCheck and Rackley RoofView. Rackley has implemented the use of virtual reality safety headsets that allow everyone to experience being on a roof and learn best safety practices. The company is beginning the use of in-ear translators that can translate speech into any language and dialect.
“We are in total control of who we hire, but as far as technology, we have to seek outside the business doors, and at times, outside of the roofing industry to look at the world to see who does what best,” Sutton said.
Following the success of last year’s inaugural Social Media Star award recognizing the attendee with the best engagement on social media, RC partnered again with No Time for Social and tracked use of the #BOSConf hashtag over the two-day period. For his efforts, John Kenney of Sutter Roofing in Florida earned his company three months of Social Media Stockpile, a customizable program for contractors that offers a full complement of social media content.

What's the arc in this? /post/156638784670/an-arc-i-have-been-thinking-about-for-no
Ahaha. I was oblique about that because I’m generally wary of seemingly one-to-one comparisons to real life politics, but that one held up so well I kind of want to get into it, so. I am 100% sure that Cersei’s inner monologue is how Donald Trump’s mind works.
She dreamt she sat the Iron Throne, high above them all.
The courtiers were brightly colored mice below. Great lords and proud ladies knelt before her. Bold young knights laid their swords at her feet and pleaded for her favors, and the queen smiled down at them. Until the dwarf appeared as if from nowhere, pointing at her and howling with laughter. The lords and ladies began to chuckle too, hiding their smiles behind their hands. Only then did the queen realize she was naked.  (Cersei I, AFFC)
Her whole world operates on this principle that status = adulation/love. But she has some awareness deep down, like a pebble in her shoe, that it doesn’t quite work that way, and so she is terrified of mockery.
I must have been mad to think he could be Hand. She would sooner abolish the office. When had a Hand ever brought her anything but grief? Jon Arryn put Robert Baratheon in her bed, and before he died he’d begun sniffing about her and Jaime as well. Eddard Stark took up right where Arryn had left off; his meddling had forced her to rid herself of Robert sooner than she would have liked, before she could deal with his pestilential brothers. Tyrion sold Myrcella to the Dornishmen, made one of her sons his hostage, and murdered the other. And when Lord Tywin returned to King’s Landing …
The next Hand will know his place, she promised herself. It would have to be Ser Kevan. Her uncle was tireless, prudent, unfailingly obedient. She could rely on him, as her father had. The hand does not argue with the head. She had a realm to rule, but she would need new men to help her rule it. (Cersei I, AFFC)
Jaime pricked herego by refusing to be Hand of the King; ergo, Hands are worthless!Except for a Hand who will be completely under her thumb, which ofcourse Kevan will be, how could he not? He knuckled under Tywin!Cersei owes her position to Tywin; she tries to emulate him withoutunderstanding the inherent limitations to his short-sighteddestruction of norms. She’s going to have this explosivecovetousness toward the institution of the Handship to a point whereshe burns down the Tower of the Hand.
Cersei thought of all the King’s Hands that she had known through the years: Owen Merryweather, Jon Connington, Qarlton Chelsted, Jon Arryn, Eddard Stark, her brother Tyrion. And her father, Lord Tywin Lannister, her father most of all. All of them are burning now, she told herself, savoring the thought. They are dead and burning, every one, with all their plots and schemes and betrayals. It is my day now. It is my castle and my kingdom. (Cersei III, AFFC)
Never mind that herproblem with Jon Arryn and Ned Stark was that she committed crimesand they were onto her. Never mind that she never even went upagainst the first three, she savors her victory over them all thesame. They are people of high status who didn’t bow down to her sothey are the eternal enemy. And it’s not enough for her to havegotten the throne, oh, no. They’re all burning in hell.
My councillors. Cersei had uprooted every rose, and all those beholden to her uncle and her brothers. In their places were men whose loyalty would be to her. She had even given them new styles, borrowed from the Free Cities; the queen would have no “masters” at court beside herself. (Cersei IV, AFFC)
I mean. Look at how she conflates “loyalty” with “people I havearbitrarily stripped of status.” And how she appropriates the onepart of the culture of the Free Cities that appeals to her ego;specifically, where there are classes of “masters” like her, andslaves.
Rosby’s coughing had begun to vex her. Perhaps Garth the Gross would not have been so ill. “Though large, the crown incomes are not large enough to keep abreast of Robert’s debts. Accordingly, I have decided to defer our repayment of the sums owed the Holy Faith and the Iron Bank of Braavos until war’s end.” The new High Septon would doubtless wring his holy hands, and the Braavosi would squeak and squawk at her, but what of it? “The monies saved will be used for the building of our new fleet.”….
“Your Grace,” Pycelle said in a quavering voice, “this will cause more trouble than you know, I fear. The Iron Bank …”
“… remains on Braavos, far across the sea. They shall have their gold, maester. A Lannister pays his debts.”
“The Braavosi have a saying too.” Pycelle’s jeweled chain clinked softly. “The Iron Bank will have its due, they say.”
“The Iron Bank will have its due when I say they will. Until such time, the Iron Bank will wait respectfully.” (Cersei IV, AFFC)
It’s like shooting fish in an over-leveraged barrel. The wholeLannister brand is built on money, but she won’t pay, because ofreasons: “everybody knows I will do the thing, which is why I don’thave to do the thing.” The actual reason, of course, would be thatpaying up or even acknowledging the debt is connected in her mind tointolerable submission and weakness, which is why her annoyance withRosby’s illness spikes right at that moment.
“What the Myrish believe does not concern me.” The Free Cities were always fighting one another. Their endless betrayals and alliances meant little and less to Westeros. “Do you have any news of more import?”
“The slave revolt in Astapor has spread to Meereen, it would seem. Sailors off a dozen ships speak of dragons …”
“Harpies. It is harpies in Meereen.” She remembered that from somewhere. Meereen was at the far end of the world, out east beyond Valyria. “Let the slaves revolt. Why should I care? We keep no slaves in Westeros. Is that all you have for me?” (Cersei V, AFFC)
“Why should I pay attention to the rest of the world?”
“Well, the rest of the world includes people with weapons thatcan kill us a-”
“BOOOOOORED.”
He gave her an apologetic smile and told her of a puppet show that had recently become popular amongst the city’s smallfolk; a puppet show wherein the kingdom of the beasts was ruled by a pride of haughty lions. “The puppet lions grow greedy and arrogant as this treasonous tale proceeds, until they begin to devour their own subjects. When the noble stag makes objection, the lions devour him as well, and roar that it is their right as the mightiest of beasts.”
“And is that the end of it?” Cersei asked, amused. Looked at in the right light, it could be seen as a salutary lesson.
“No, Your Grace. At the end a dragon hatches from an egg and devours all of the lions.”
The ending took the puppet show from simple insolence to treason. “Witless fools. Only cretins would hazard their heads upon a wooden dragon.” She considered a moment. “Send some of your whisperers to these shows and make note of who attends. If any of them should be men of note, I would know their names.”
“What will be done with them, if I may be so bold?” “Any men of substance shall be fined. Half their worth should be sufficient to teach them a sharp lesson and refill our coffers, without quite ruining them. Those too poor to pay can lose an eye, for watching treason. For the puppeteers, the axe.” (Cersei V, AFFC)
Okay, this is exactly how someone gets into a fake feud with theFailing Kings Landing Times.
The puppet show is clearly derogatory, but she’s okay with it aslong as as long as the lion comes out on top. Then as soon as soon asit makes her a loser, it’s stupid, worthless, who could care about that? It’s sostupid and pointless, she’s going to have them killed over it! Nopuppet! No puppet!
Myrish lace was costly, but it was necessary for a queen to look her best at all times, and her wretched washerwomen had shrunk several of her old gowns so they no longer fit. She would have whipped them for their carelessness, but Taena had urged her to be merciful. “The smallfolk will love you more if you are kind,” she had said, so Cersei had ordered the value of the gowns deducted from the women’s wages, a much more elegant solution.
Dorcas put a silver looking glass into her hand. Very good, the queen thought, smiling at her reflection. It was pleasant to be out of mourning. Black made her look too pale. (Cersei V, AFFC)
“People died….damn, I look good!” *stiffs a contractor on an ego-saving pretext*
Grand Maester Pycelle had wanted an older man “more seasoned in the ways of war” to command the gold cloaks, and several of her other councillors had agreed with him. “Ser Osfryd is seasoned quite sufficiently,” she had told them, but even that did not shut them up. They yap at me like a pack of small, annoying dogs. Her patience with Pycelle had all but run its course. He had even had the temerity to object to her sending to Dorne for a master-at-arms, on the grounds that it might offend the Tyrells. “Why do you think I’m doing it?” she had asked him scornfully. (Cersei VI, AFFC)
She despises Pycellefor his cravenness even though she feels fully entitled to his sleazyabuse of his position as long as it benefits her. Then her mindbounces from her disgust at his obsequiousness to her own politics ofimpetuous grievance – because she really doesn’t understand thatnot everyone thinks that way.
Cersei blamed Margaery Tyrell for this. If not for her, Wat might have lived a long and fruitful life, singing his little songs and bedding pig girls and crofter’s daughters. Her scheming forced this on me. She has soiled me with her treachery.
By dawn the singer’s high blue boots were full of blood, and he had told them how Margaery would fondle herself as she watched her cousins pleasuring him with their mouths. At other times he would sing for her whilst she sated her lusts with other lovers. “Who were they?” the queen demanded, and the wretched Wat named Ser Tallad the Tall, Lambert Turnberry, Jalabhar Xho, the Redwyne twins, Osney Kettleblack, Hugh Clifton, and the Knight of Flowers. (Cersei IX, AFFC)
Anything she’sunhappy about – someone else’s fault! And she’s not satisfiedwith Wat’s story until it’s this ludicrous, OTT projection of herown crimes. YOU’RE the puppet!
She remembered what Lord Waters had said about the riots. I had not considered how the smallfolk might react to this. (Cersei X, AFFC)
Because, of course she didn’t.
Like I said, there aren’t perfect comparisons. But the underlying pathology checks out.
