Aluminium Mould Tooling?

Typically we are asked to design and manufacture aluminium tooling for representative prototypes, ‘new’ pre-production parts, or low/ medium volume products.

There is a common misconception that aluminium tooling is limited to very low volumes (c 5,000 shots), however we are specialists in this field and, whilst the tools remain under our care and handling, we have historically been able to produce 100,000+ parts from aluminium tools in engineering polymers.

Many Clients who have ordered our aluminium tools for prototype development use have then been able to use the same tool for production supply.

Our aluminium tooling is used with a very wide range of high end technical and engineering polymers including Ultem, Nickel fill, Steel fill, Nanotube fill, PTFE fill, Electro-conductive, 50% glass filled PBT and Nylons, as well as the more common commercial plastics.

The alloys we use are high-grade and sourced from some of the biggest UK stockholders. We are provided with Certificates of Conformity in order to underwrite a quality tool, built to last.

Typically we are asked to design and manufacture steel tooling for Medium/ high volume production (1,000,000+).

We offer the full range of high-end traditional tool making with the benefit of using the same quality, speed of manufacture and operational systems developed by us for First Tier rapid development tooling manufacture.

Stainless Steel Machined Parts

Usually we all think of stainless steel as being utilised for items such as home furnishings or cutlery and earlier in the early 90's beer cans!! Well, did you actually know?? Stainless steel plays a key part as a material within the precision machining industry even more so in today's CNC machinery based processes. Whether you travel on an aeroplane or a cruise-liner you can guarantee that many of the working or exposed components have been machined from a grade of stainless steel.

CAD-CAM software further enables the capability to manufacture stainless steel components to the highest specification.

Today's common methods of machining stainless steel components can be one of many including turning, milling, drilling and boring using state-of-the-art CNC Machinery. In the aerospace industry close tolerance, complex parts are required and are produced using 5-Axis milling machines along with Multi-Axis CNC mill/turning machines. CAD-CAM software further enables the capability to manufacture stainless steel components to the highest specification.

Why Stainless Steel??

Well, this material combines a number of excellent properties. Firstly, stainless steel has great corrosion resistance making it appealing for applications that are exposed to bad weather and moisture. Secondly, It offers greater strength than materials such as mild steel and aluminium and can be further enhanced with heatreatment processes. As you guessed it, it makes for a great choice for aerospace components.

Sedamyl UK is an agribusiness that processes wheat to manufacture a range of value-added products that includes native and modified starches, alcohol for food & beverages, native wheat proteins and wheatfeed.

We have worked on the plant in Selby for many years now and have seen it go through many changes.  

The tank was jet washed inside and out.

Our latest project was a tank that had been open and empty for the last seven years. Our job was to take it from dereliction to a fully working useable tank to support Sedamyl’s expansion plans.  We worked from top to bottom, inside and out. Its size 2,200,000 litres in volume and the area worked on approximately 1020m².

Externally the tank was manually ground down to provide a suitable key. Sigmacover 2 was applied. This is a two pack Epoxy Paint that offers a fast-drying solution and can be applied in low temperatures, down to freezing point. After cure, Sigmadur 550 was applied. This is a non-yellowing product, highly resistant to weathering and UV light and works best when exposed to atmospheric conditions.

Internally the area was grit blasted to return it to a bare steel. The primer, intermediate coats and specially formulated top coat are all the same generic family. Thereby giving excellent inter-coat adhesion properties. It’s supplied by Sprayglass International.

Sprayglass LP Primer was applied to the prepared steel, followed by multiple coats of Sprayglass SG-443 glass flake coating. It is used primarily to protect steel from corrosive attack. Widely used in the Water Treatment, Power Generation, and chemical Industries for lining of tanks, process vessels, filtration vessels and ion exchange vessels.

Differences in Food-Grade Plastic Injection Moulding Materials

Materials that come into direct contact with food must be robust, hard-wearing, and non-reactive.

For consumer safety, it is essential that the plastics used must be able to withstand factors such as extreme temperatures, chemical exposure, & UV radiation without deteriorating. To be considered food-grade, plastic injection moulding materials must adhere to strict regulations.

Food-Grade Material Options & Their Applications

There are many food-grade material options used in plastic injection moulding, as well as other plastic fabrication methods used to create food packaging and containers. Each type of plastic option features its own unique properties.

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

HDPE is highly durable and available in translucent (non-pigmented) and opaque (pigmented) options. This stiffer material is frequently used for beverage containers, cereal box liners, and plastic bags.

HDPE is more rigid, stiffer, & more brittle than LDPE. It is the most common household plastic, due in large part to its chemical & moisture resistance capabilities.

Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)

LDPE is commonly used for squeezable condiment bottles, container lids, and coatings for beverage cups or paper cartons. More broadly, LDPE is also popular for shrink-wrap or plastic bags used for bread or produce.

LDPE is the most flexible polyethylene option. It is odourless and non-toxic, with a high resistance to moisture.

Additionally, LDPE resists most chemicals, features high durability, can withstand heavy impacts, & tolerates all weather types.

This material is translucent & typically easy to process.

Polycarbonate (PC)

PC plastics are commonly selected for creating reusable water bottles, baby bottles, and water-cooler bottles.

Ideal for applications that require particularly tough materials, polycarbonate (PC) is strong and durable.

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)

PET is a highly stable, semi-rigid plastic commonly used for fabricating packaging that needs to retain its shape under pressure.

This material resists corrosion, repels microorganisms, and does not degrade when it encounters food.

Certain types of PET are also oven-safe & microwavable.

PET is often used for plastic beverage bottles, as well as jars for pickles or peanut butter. Plastic oven-safe film and microwavable food trays are also typically made from PET.

Polypropylene (PP)

PP is non-toxic, resistant to chemicals, has high toughness, and offers excellent elasticity and fatigue resistance.

This material also maintains its properties in high and low temperatures, making it very versatile. PP is a popular choice for takeout containers, squeezable syrup bottles, and butter and margarine containers.

Polystyrene (PS)

Often used for processed food boxes or snack boxes, PS will maintain its core properties when exposed to cold temperatures. This plastic has a low melting point and is typically clear and hard. Often used for rigid cutlery, cups, bowls, and other foodservice items, PS is also ideal for rigid food containers for items such as yogurt.

Choosing the appropriate material for your food or beverage application helps ensure customer safety and satisfaction.

Amazing public art programme to project manage. great to work with Kerry and the AJ Wells team. So many different artworks created by Kerry. AJ Wells as principle contractor designed , manufactured and installed their Wellsclad vitreous enamel non-flammable, zero-smoke cladding panel system @thelexiconbracknell development in Bracknell. Bracknell Forest Council commissioned Artscape Management who appointed artist Kerry Lemon to create the artwork that depicts plants found across the borough.
